Not only is Procopio significantly superior on the mat, but she’s a skilled enough striker to hold her own a weight class up against Karol Rosa. She’s fefinitely a solid underdog investment. Seung Woo Choi has fought two quality UFC opponents (Movsar Evloev and Gavin Tucker) and one very, very bad one (Suman Mokhtarian), The quality duo combined to land 10 takedowns on him, and considering Zalal’s willingness and ability to drag opponents to the mat, that’s a death sentence. Choi doesn’t even figure to have much of an edge on the feet, as Zalal’s length, durability, and savvy make landing a knockout shot a borderline impossible task. “The Moroccan Devil” should be a much larger favorite, so make sure you’re in position to punish the bookies for their error. Our starting point is that of using probability to express the chance that an event of interest occurs. So a probability of 0.1, or 10% risk, means that there is a 1 in 10 chance of the event occurring. The usual way of thinking about probability is that if we could repeat the experiment or process under consideration a large number of times, the fraction of experiments where the event occurs should be close to the probability (e.g. 0.1). The odds of an event of interest occurring is defined by odds = p/(1-p) where p is the probability of the event occurring. So if p=0.1, the odds are equal to 0.1/0.9=0.111 (recurring). So here the probability (0.1) and the odds (0.111) are quite similar. Indeed whenever p is small, the probability and odds will be similar. This is because when p is small, 1-p is approximately 1, so that p/(1-p) is approximately equal to p. But when p is not small, the probability and odds will generally be quite different. This means that the odds of a bad outcome if a patient takes the new treatment are 0.444 that of the odds of a bad outcome if they take the existing treatment. The odds (and hence probability) of a bad outcome are reduced by taking the new treatment. We could also express the reduction by saying that the odds are reduced by approximately 56%, since the odds are reduced by a factor of 0.444. Why odds ratios, and not risk/probability ratios? People often (I think quite understandably) find odds, and consequently also an odds ratio, difficult to intuitively interpret. An alternative is to calculate risk or probability ratios. In the clinical trial example, the risk (read probability) ratio is simply the ratio of the probability of a bad outcome under the new treatment to the probability under the existing treatment, i.e. 0.1/0.2=0.5. This means the risk of a bad outcome with the new treatment is half that under the existing treatment, or alternatively the risk is reduced by a half. Intuitively the risk ratio is much easier to understand. So why do we use odds and odds ratios in statistics? Logistic regression. Often we want to do more than just compare two groups in terms of the probability/risk/odds of an outcome. Specifically, we often are interested in fitting statistical models which describe how the chance of the event of interest occurring depends on a number of covariates or predictors. Such models can be fitted within the generalized linear model family. The most popular model is logistic regression, which uses the logit link function. Because of this severe split, handicappers are quick to assume that seven or eight out of 10 is a reasonable expectation over the long term. Positive results like this lead to greed and cutting corners, not to mention false expectations. If you value your bankroll like most successful handicappers, you need to avoid putting any stock in betting systems that aren't proven over an extender period of time. The Michigan Gaming Control Board announced Friday that it authorized Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians and platform providers PokerStars for online gaming and FoxBet for online sports betting to launch at 11 a.m. PokerStars is the first operator in Michigan to offer peer-to-peer poker games online, MGCB executive director Richard Kalm said. Michiganders are only permitted to play against others within state lines, although interstate play is expected to be approved later this year, according to the MGCB. Michigan is the fifth state to allow real money poker games. FoxBet is the 11th online sportsbook approved in Michigan after 10 launched Jan. 22. Meanwhile, there are now 10 authorized online casinos after the MGCB approved PokerStars and Barstool’s online casino Friday. Barstool’s sportsbook launched last Friday. Which Age Group Has The Best Sports Bettors? There’s Some Data. John Brennan Published: Sep 23, 2019. It’s easy enough to picture legal sports betting in New Jersey to be an “old man’s game,” since many of them have been either wagering illegally for decades or at least keeping a close eye on point spreads recreationally. But according to data from the first half of 2019 produced by 888 Holdings, it is middle-aged and younger men who are the ones holding their own — and the oldest ones who are struggling. Men aged 55-64 saw a negative 25% return on their investment, and those aged 65 and up lost 12.1%. The biggest winners by far were those aged 45-54, with a positive 16.9% return on investment. Men aged 35-44 (0.9%) and aged 18-24 (0.1%) eked out narrow victories, while those aged 25-34 lost 8.5% of their collective wagering dollars. The total win for the house was 4.6%, a smidge below typical house expectations. If these numbers hold up over time, though, look for operators to try to figure out how to entice more seniors into action. Online casino and poker results. No group of men was a winner in online casino gaming, but this time those aged 55-64 turned the tables on the rest by losing just 20.6% of their dollars. That nosed out those aged 25-34 at 23.8%. The rest did much more poorly: aged 35-44 lost 42.9%, aged 45-54 lost 53.5%, and those 65 and up lost a whopping 73.9%. As for online poker, there was strikingly little variation. The best was a loss of 35.9% by that aged 55-64 group which seemingly should avoid sports betting, and the worst was a loss of 46.5% by those aged 18-24. The older three subgroups of men all outshone their younger cohorts. The number of participants was 755 men for online casino, 741 for poker, and 451 for sports betting. One group of women — 575 for online casino — proved large enough to carry some weight statistically. And for whatever reason, those women did much better than men. Women aged 55-64 (12.1% ROI) and 25-34 (12.2%) each fared better than any male group — and those two age cohorts won the day among both genders in online casino play. More numbers on female gambling. Note to those with grandparents who seem to spend a lot of time “spinning the wheels” on their laptops — women aged 65 and up had a negative 77.1% ROI for online casino, slightly worse than male senior citizens, with each group taking up the rear in the category. With only 78 female poker players and 76 female sports bettors in the analysis, the numbers are for amusement purposes only. Still, let’s amuse ourselves: Poker-playing women, meanwhile, performed similarly to men. The main exceptions were women aged 55-64 losing at a rate of just 3.2% and women aged 35-44 leading all groups with a loss of 65.5%. It’s still relatively early in the national online gambling era, but it will be interesting to see if women can maintain these advantages over men once we have years of data across a swath of the country. And if they do, it might be time for a “Jenny The Greek” on national TV instead of gambler Jimmy “The Greek” from the 1970s.

On Tuesday, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) authorized nine operators to go live on Jan. 22 at noon. “The Michigan Gaming Control Board and the state’s commercial and tribal casinos will begin a new era Jan. 22 with the launch of regulated online gaming and sports betting,” MGCB executive director Richard S. Kalm said in a news release. “Michigan residents love sports and, judging by inquiries we’ve received, eagerly anticipate using mobile devices to place bets through the commercial and tribal casinos. Online gaming and sports betting will provide the casinos with new ways to engage with customers while the state and local communities will benefit from taxes and payments on wagering revenue.” No poker yet, but online gaming may pave the way. Michigan officially legalized online poker, online casinos and sports betting in 2019. So far, PokerStars and Roar Digital/MGM (which runs partypoker US Network ) have been approved in the state. The good news for poker players is that online casinos in Michigan will at least launch this week. Neither decision signals any immediate movement on sports betting; rather, gambling commission staff is setting the table so that it is ready to move when the first tribal compact that includes sports betting is complete. That likely won’t happen for another few months, at which point the gambling commission will start the rule-making process in earnest. Washington lawmakers legalized tribal-only sports betting in March, limited to betting on premises at brick-and-mortar sportsbooks. But unlike in some states, there are no firm deadlines in the bill. As examples, Colorado’s sports betting law required that the state be prepared for systems go by May 1, 2020, while Virginia’s new law calls for rules to be approved by Sept. 15. Virginia lawmakers legalized sports betting a month later than Washington lawmakers did. Compacting first, rules second. And while the WSGC has been doing what it can to prepare for sports betting, the state and its tribes must complete the compacting process to add sports betting as an authorized activity before the commission can roll out proposed rules or begin the licensing process. “The first step is to get this clarified in compact negotiations,” said WSGC Legal and Legislative Manager Brian Considine during the meeting, which was held virtually. “If the agreement is to issue licenses and write regulations, then we will be ready. At three months or so, if we’re in a good place (with compact negotiations) to start moving forward with rules, then we can do so.” The gambling board is already in negotiations with four tribes, and it will have to negotiate with each tribe individually, come to an agreement, and then have that agreement signed off on by the state legislature, the governor, and the U.S. Dept. of the Interior. In this case, we used the Kelly equation for proportional betting. Here your bet would be your edge divided by the odds. In this example, since the edge is 10% and the odds are evens, 10 / 1 is 10. So 10% of the $1000 balance, i.e. $100, should be bet each time. If that bet wins, the next bet would increase to $110, 10% of the new $1100 wallet. This means winnings increase quicker than in the fixed-wager system, and losses slow down. Betting Strategy E: Fibonacci. With this strategy, you increase your bet in a Fibonacci sequence, to your losses with the next bet’s winnings. The Fibonacci sequence are numbers in the following sequence: 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144,… By definition, the first two numbers in the Fibonacci sequence are either 1 and 1, or 0 and 1, depending on the chosen starting point of the sequence, and each subsequent number is the sum of the previous two. This method has similar drawbacks to the Martingale system, but it reduces how quickly the bet increases if you’re on a losing streak,as well as reducing the rate at which you win. Which Is the Most Profitable Betting Method? Clearly, Strategy D, the proportional betting system , provides the greatest returns, earning $18,275 after 500 bets. This is not too surprising, since proportional betting appears to have a natural advantage over the others systems. Say you’re down to your last $100, you’d be betting $10, and decreasing each time, keeping you in the game for much longer than a fixed betting system, where your last $100 would be your last bet. The only system other than proportional betting to avoid losses was fixed betting (Strategy C), earning $6,400 after 500 bets. Strategy A, bet it all, generates big gains after the first bet, earning as much in one risk than the others do in the first seven. However, this strategy is eliminated on just the second round. The chance of making it through 500 rounds at 55% is practically impossible – although you would have earned $67 billion by bet 27. The Martingale (Strategy B) and Fibonacci(Strategy E) betting systems also start strongly, but any big sequence of losses quickly increases the required stake. In our simulation of betting online, we lost 11 times in a row at round 83. These losses completely wiped out both Fibonacci and Martingale’s stakes. In fact, at the 11-in-a-row loss, the Martingale bettor had to bet $403,000 to recoup his losses. That was impossible, since his maximum balance was only $6,300. For Fibonacci, the maximum bet was $33,500, with his balance reaching its maximum at $4,100 before busting out. The 11-bet losing streak also affected proportional betting (Strategy D) greatly, reducing its winnings from $7,359 to $2,286 – lower than that of fixed betting (Strategy C). This shows how well fixed betting protects your winnings and thus ranks as one of our best betting tips. Which Betting Strategy Should I Choose? It’s important to keep in mind that our simulation is based on the huge assumptions that we know both the edge (10% in our case) and that the edge is in our favor.
