The moment has finally come: Super Bowl LV is here. It'll be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers playing a rare home game as they take on the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs with the winner hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. For the Buccaneers, they find themselves back at Raymond James Stadium after winning three road playoff games in a row, including a victory in the NFC title game against MVP candidate Aaron Rodgers and his Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. As for the Chiefs, they took down arguably the hottest team in football in the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game and are now looking to become the first team since the 2003-04 Patriots to win back-to-back titles. But the Chiefs amped it up big time against the Bills. When Patrick Mahomes is cooking, they are almost impossible to stop. We know the Bucs and defensive coordinator Todd Bowles love to blitz, but that's suicide against Mahomes, who is the best in the league against the blitz. Injuries to both starting tackles for the Chiefs could mean less blitzing is needed, but I still think the Bucs will be true to who they are, which is an attack defense. That could and should mean a lot of big plays. -- Pete Prisco on how Kansas City edges out a 35-30 win over the Bucs. "The only thing more impressive than Andy Reid off the bye is Patrick Mahomes off the bye. In his career as a starter, not only is Mahomes 7-0 coming off a bye, but the Chiefs have averaged 35.7 points per game in those seven wins. In Mahomes' career, the Chiefs have also averaged 33.3 points per game when playing a team for the second time during a season. I think what I'm trying to say here is that the Chiefs are going to score a lot of points and I'm not sure the Buccaneers are going to be able to keep up. The Chiefs have a chance to become the NFL's first repeat champion in 16 years and I think they're going to pull it off. " -- John Breech, who is 16-2 picking Chiefs games this year -- on why he likes them by a touchdown against Tampa Bay. In his bold predictions piece for Super Bowl LV, CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin has Tom Brady and Mahomes combining for 800 (!) yards and six touchdown passes. To read the rest of Cody's bold predictions (plus a prediction for this game), click here. "While the rare home-field advantage should help the Bucs, they also have a few intriguing trends leaning their way. Teams entering the Super Bowl with a worse record than their opponent have won 10 of the past 12 games. Tampa Bay went 11-5 over the regular season while K.C. claimed the No. 1 seed in the AFC at 14-2. The Chiefs had a tremendously successful season in terms of their actual record, but they went 8-10 ATS, which is currently tied for the second-worst cover percentage entering the Super Bowl. Teams who have previously entered the Super Bowl multiple games below .500 ATS lost (1997 Packers, 1979 Rams). " -- Tyler Sullivan explains why he likes the Buccaneers to edge out a 33-27 victory. SportsLine's legendary handicapper Hammerin' Hank Goldberg enters Super Bowl LV on a 51-34 record on his NFL best bets over the past year-and-a-half. For this matchup, he has three best bets that he is coveting, including the "huge factor" why the Chiefs will not win this game. To find out what that is along with his other best bets for Super Bowl LV, head on over the SportsLine.

The set-up: Vancouver won't be lacking for motivation here as it tries to break a three-game slide. It also plays with immediate revenge here after getting spanked 7-3 in this building two nights ago. With another game on Monday here, the Canucks will be risking life and limb getting into shooting and passing lanes tonight to try and get off the schneid. I like betting on motivated teams, and with an extra goal and a half of insurance at this price, I think the Nucks definitely offer value ATS. The pick: Finally, note that Toronto is just 2-6 in its last eight after scoring six or more goals in a four-goals or greater victory in its last outing. In a game which I see being decided late or in extra time, I'm going to lay the reasonable price for the extra 1.5 goals of insurance. This is a 1* FREE PLAY on the Canucks on the puck-line. Pick 4 UK (-115) @ Pointsbet. This is a play on the KENTUCKY WILDCATS for our CBB Saturday FREE PLAY. To say it has been a disappointing season for Kentucky would be an understatement. The Wildcats are 5-11 overall including 4-5 in the SEC, certainly not living up to their normal standards. That being said, they lost to 10-0 Alabama twice and second place Missouri. Overall, Kentucky has played the seventh toughest schedule in the country overall which is by far the toughest of any team in the SEC so the record is a bit deceiving. Tennessee is 12-4 including a 5-54 record in the conference so it has not been much better but is laying points on the road. The Volunteers have only won one away game (at Texas A&M) since December 30th. They struggle mightily on the road, especially when it comes to scoring as they are averaging just 60 ppg. Play (752) Kentucky Wildcats. Pick -4.5 GT (-109) @ pinnacle. This is a 1* free play on Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets last home game was a double digit win over Florida State, and they boast a record of 7-2 overall at home. The Irish have won four of their last five, but all those wins came against conference bottom feeders. Prior to that they suffered double digit losses to Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Yellow Jackets are 4-0 ATS in their last four home games, and they are 22-7 ATS in their last 29 games following a ATS loss. Georgia Tech has lost three of four, but those losses came against Duke, Louisville and Virginia in close games. Pick -5 COLO (-110) @ sportsinteraction. Arizona is also off a loss to Utah. But theirs just transpired Thursday. The Wildcats also cannot claim to have held the kind of significant lead Colorado had over the Utes. Playing in Salt Lake City, the Wildcats trailed the entire second half and ended up going down by a final score of 73-58. They shot very poorly (made only 2 three-pointers) and let Utah shoot 58% in the second half. Playing with more rest and at home, Colorado would seem to have the advantage tonight. They haven't played since blowing that huge lead against Utah one week ago and thus should be "chomping at the bit" to get back on the court. They hadn't lost here in Boulder until last week and are still 5-0 ATS when laying 3.5 to 6 points here. Arizona has covered only three times in their last 14 tries as a dog. I believe the Buffaloes are the best team in the Pac 12 and one of the 20 best in the country. My suggestion is to lay the points here. 1* Colorado. Pick -3 USC (-110) @ sportsinteraction. This is a FREE play (1*) on SOUTHERN CAL. It's a battle for first place, late Saturday night in the Pac 12. UCLA (9-1 Pac 12, 13-3 overall) is the team in "pole position," however USC (8-2, 14-3) is at home and slightly favored. We beluieve the Trojans to be the slightly better team. While that is reflected in the number, you shouldn't be afraid to lay it. USC is 9-1 at home and they have scored an average of 14 more points per game than they have allowed. All three UCLA losses have come on the road, including the lone one in the Pac 12, which was two Saturdays ago at undermanned Stanford. USC just beat Stanford, on the road, Tuesday. The Bruins have had two of their last three games postponed, a disruption they certainly didn't need heading into this big rivalry game. They've already lost one of their top scorers (Chris Smith) to an ACL injury. That they scored just 57 points in their last game is not a good sign either. Nor is a 3-11 ATS record playing on 5 or 6 days rest. Play on SOUTHERN CAL. Pick Under 231 (-105) @ Pointsbet. ASA free play on: UNDER 231 Golden State Warriors @ Dallas Mavericks, 8:35 PM ET - These two teams met on Thursday with the Warriors off 147-116 blowout win over the Mavs. Everything went right for the Warriors as they shot 57% (compared to 45.8% season average) overall and 51% from beyond the arc (ss nave 36.9%). The Warriors put up 36, 37 in 3rd and 4th quarters with Kelly Oubre Jr. have a career night with 50-points on 7 made 3-pointers. Don’t expect lighting to strike twice in a row here and bet Golden State reverts back to their normal averages here. Dallas has another poor shooting night which seems to be a continuing theme as they are last in the league in 3-point percentage. On Thursday night the Mavs finished the game by making just 2 of their last 14 3-pointers. The Mavs will be playing with a chip on their shoulders here after Thursday’s blowout so expect their defense to be much better. Dallas prefers to play slow with the 22nd slowest pace in the NBA and know the only way to beat Golden State is to keep this to a low scoring affair. These teams rank 19th (Dallas) and 20th (Warriors) in offensive efficiency ratings. Grab the added value with UNDER in this one. Pick -3.5 TENN (-106) @ 888sport. My free play is on Tennessee at 8:00 ET. Kentucky was ranked No. 10 in the AP preseason poll but its 1-6 start took care of that. However, the Wildcats won three straight to open SEC play, after a 76-58 at Florida on Jan 9. Hope was alive in Lexington but the Wildcats have lost FIVE of six since that 3-0 SEC start. Tennessee was No. 12 in the AP's preseason poll and the Vols were 10-1 and ranked 6th when they lost 75-49 at Florida on Jan 19. The Vols have lost THREE of five (including that loss to the Gators) and visit Lexington at 12-4 (ranked 11th). Tennessee blasted Kansas 80-61 last Saturday but then lost 52-50 at Ole Miss this past Tuesday, which had lost FIVE of its previous seven games, including THREE by double digits. Head coach Rick Barnes lamented mistakes in his Volunteers' loss at Ole Miss. They had 16 turnovers, which compounded the troubles they had shooting the ball, 35.6 percent for the game and 10 of 16 on free throws. "We had just some horrendous turnovers," Barnes said. "When you add that to the fact that we missed some shots that I like to think we can make around the rim, and you add that to the fact that with missing the front end of some one-and-ones on free throws, it makes for a long night. That's the disappointing part of it." Tennessee is loaded with perimeter players. Guards Bailey (10.4), Springer (9.6), Pons (9.4 & 5.8), Johnson (9.0), Vescovi (8.7 & 3.8) and Jordon-James (8.3 & 5.8) are quite a group. The 6-9 Fulkerson averages 11.0 & 5.9. It's no surprise that Calipari relies on freshmen, including leading scorer Boston (12.0 & 5.3), who was joined in the backcourt by freshman Clarke (10.7) and Askew (6.6) plus senior Mintz (10.3). However, Clarke has been sidelined since Dec 26 with an ankle injury. 7-0 senior Wake Forest transfer Sarr (10.2 & 5.6) has help up front from 6-10 freshman Jackson (6.6 & 7.1) and now 6-7 sophomore Brooks, who since getting back on the court has averaged 10.1 & 5.3. The Wildcats rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to within three points, 68-65, with 4:53 remaining at Missouri on Wednesday and still were within four at 74-70 with 1:17 on the clock. However, they missed their last three shots in the final minute, including a couple of layups. Another defeat would saddle the Wildcats with their most losses under coach John Calipari since his 2012-13 team was 21-12. Anyone ever think a Cal-coached team would be averaging 67.6 PPG (269th) on 41.8% shooting (273rd), including 30.2% on threes (298th)? However, that's the case and while the Vols have been inconsistent on the offensive end this season, they are allowing just 58.9 PPG (6th) on 39.3% shooting (21st). Take the road favorite.

Below you will find the major ways of representing odds explained. They are: American Decimal Fractional. We will also lay out some of the basics you should keep in mind when reading odds. Together, this is a complete guide to reading and understanding odds for sports betting. It’s the next step towards having the best time and most gains while betting on sports. Odds Formats Explained. We all have had to have the odds formats explained to us at some point. They can be a bit confusing at first, but you will get the hang of it quickly. There are three main ways of representing odds , and it is important to explain them well. They are equivalents, and can be directly translated. They are just different ways of representing the same value. And they all represent the chance that something will happen . Or rather, the chance the betting market thinks something will happen. In direct relation to the probability that something will happen, odds also tell you how much money you stand to gain and how much you could lose (exposure). This is why it is so important to have the odds formats explained. How American odds work? How Decimal odds work How Fractional odds work. How American Betting Odds Work. The American odds format are most common , of course, in the United States. It may be counterintuitive at first, but it is important to know that favorites are marked with a negative sign (-). The value next to the negative sign is the amount you need to wager to win $100. That’s just how these odds work. In other words, the lower the number, the more likely they are to win, and the less money you win. WInning a bet marked at -220, means that you would win an extra $100 if you placed $220. These numbers will always be lower than -100. How Decimal Betting Odds Work. Decimal odds are also known as continental, digital, or European odds. Decimal odds are very simple and are the easiest for calculating payout. In decimal odds, your stake is already calculated in your total payout. No need to add it back in to calculate your total payout. You calculate the payout using the following simple formula: Stake x Decimal Odds = Total Payout. Another way of thinking about these numbers is that they represent how much a winning ticket will be worth if you bet $1. In order to spot the underdog and favorite, just keep in mind that the lower the number, the more favored. Let’s look at an example. St. Louis Cardinals: 1.25. Chicago Cubs: 2.00. In this case, the St. Louis Cardinals are the favorites. Here, betting $1 on the Cardinals will get you $1.25. Assuming they win. And if the Cubs win, all who bet $1 on them, will get $2. This can be multiplied out, so the Cubs bettors would get $200 for betting $100. This means their profit would be $100. Because, remember, and decimal fractions, the stake is included in the payout. How Fractional Betting Odds Work? Fractional odds are also known as British, Ratio, or Traditional odds. You can spot them because they are represented with a hyphen (-) or a colon (:) between two numbers. The first part of the fraction, the denominator, represents how much profit you earn if you bet the the second part of the fraction, the nominator. Maybe an example will help you see how these odds work. If you bet on 4/1 (said “four-to-one”) odds, you will get $4 profit for every $1 you bet. You will also get your original stake back. Another way to calculate this is to multiply your stake by the first number, then divide it by the second number. This is more helpful for complicated numbers like 9/4. Always remember to add your stake back in. The lower the first number compared to the second number means they are more favored to win. Quick recap: three types of odds. You need to learn these by heart if you want to feel comfortable navigating the international sportsbook markets. Knowing these different formats could come in handy when you are researching or looking for value bets. American to Decimal to Fractional: Types of Bets. Understanding how odds work means that you can now apply them to the different types of bets. Let’s take a look at the main types of bets that you will see. Point Spread: In point spreads, you are betting on the difference between the winning and losing scores. A bookmaker will post a number, and you decide if it will be more or less than that. Moneyline: These are the simplest bets. You are simply choosing who you think will win the match. Over/Under: In over/unders, you are betting on the total number of points scored by all teams. The bookmaker will post a number, and you bet on whether or not the actual total will be over or under that number. Prop bets: Propositions (props) are bets that focus on everything that happens before the end of the game. This is where you can find the most fun and creative bets. Futures: Futures are also known as ante bets. They are on events well in advance. They have elevated risks and rewards, as there is more uncertainty. How Do Odds Work. How Sports Betting Odds Work. Widespread legalization of sports betting has brought a lot of new bettors to the table. The opportunity to have some vested financial interest in sporting events that you are going to watch anyway is a pretty attractive proposition. As a result, a lot of novice gamblers have signed up to try their hands at betting on sports. There is a process to learning how to bet on sports. Admittedly, a lot of people, many of us included here at ATS, have gone bust a time or two while getting a feel for how everything works. The best way to set yourself up for success is to take the time to learn the basics and to understand how everything works. Once you get that part down, then you can handicap and break down games like you’ve probably been doing with friends or for fantasy leagues in the past. Understanding how sports betting odds work is a big step in that process. Many people look at the odds board in a retail sportsbook or at the odds on a website or mobile app and just see numbers. There are some things that you need to know about how odds work in sports betting and about some of the terms associated with them. How Sports Betting Odds Work With The Point Spread. NY Giants -1.5 (-110) This is a point spread from the NFL Games of the Year at DraftKings Sportsbook New Jersey, which includes all of the lines for Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season. How do the sports betting odds work for this game? The Giants are -1.5, which means that the Giants are favored by 1.5 points over the Cardinals. If you bet the Giants at -1.5, you would need New York to win by 2 or more points before 1.5 points will be subtracted from their final score. Let’s say that this game ends New York Giants 27, Arizona Cardinals 24. If we subtract 1.5 points from the Giants, they still “win” the game by a score of 25.5 to 24. If we add 1.5 points to the Cardinals, the Giants still “win” the game by a score of 27 to 25.5. In sports betting terms, we would say that the Giants “covered” the spread. The -110 in this point spread is called the vig, which is short for vigorish. Some people also call -110 the “juice”. The vig is for the house and we have a much more detailed explanation on what the vig is on our “ What Does -110 Mean for a Sportsbook? ” page. For your purposes as somebody just starting out, think about the vig as a tax or a commission. Instead of getting back even money on your bet, you get back about 90.9% of your bet. It is one of many ways in which the sportsbooks attempt to make a profit called a “hold” on a game. Some people will Bet to Win, which, in the case of -110, would typically mean something like $110 to win $100 to have a nice, round number. Others will Bet to Risk, which means betting any amount that they want to win roughly 90.9% of that amount. We have a more detailed explanation of Bet to Win vs. Bet to Risk as well. How Totals Odds Work In Sports Betting. Cardinals/Giants Over 47.5 (-110) Cardinals/Giants Under 47.5 (-110) In our above example between the Cardinals and the Giants, let’s say that the total, also known as the Over/Under, is 47.5. This is a very simple and straightforward wager. If you bet over 47.5, you are betting that the combined point total between the two teams is higher than 47.5. If you bet under 47.5, you are betting that the combined point total between the two teams is lower than 47.5. The Giants scored 27 points and the Cardinals scored 24 points. Because 51 is higher than 47.5, the game went “over the total”. As you can see, the vig still applies to this type of bet as well. How To Read Sports Betting Odds – The Money Line. If you bet on the Giants at -120, that is a higher vig than -110, so your payout would be more like 83.33% of what you bet instead of 90.9%. If you bet $100 on the Giants to win and they won the game, you would win $83.33. Using the above example, the Giants were the winners, so the -120 side would win and your Win Amount would be relative to the amount that you bet on the game. If you bet $120 to win $100, you would win that amount. If you bet $200, you would win $166.67. How Sportsbooks Use Sports Betting Odds. Oddsmakers post a line. Bettors wager into that line. Based on the bets that come in, sportsbooks often move the odds. Remember that the vig exists so that sportsbooks can attempt to balance their exposure and risk in order to make a profit on the game no matter which side wins. They can do that by moving the vig itself. If a line is -110 on both sides, but more bets are coming in on one side than the other, the vig could move to -115 on that side. If the vig moves on one side, it will move on the other side as well. A move to -115 on one side means a corresponding move to -105 on the other side. The lower vig amount is designed to entice betting action on that side of a game. Sportsbooks can also outright move the odds on the game. A total of 47.5 that has received a lot of betting action on the over could be moved up to 48 or 48.5. That is done by the bookmakers in hopes of getting bets to come in on the other side at a more attractive line for bettors. In this case, that would mean the bettors that want to bet under 48.5. They may not have felt comfortable betting at 47.5, but feel better about 48.5. As the point spread moves, the money line moves in a corresponding way as well. Let’s say that a lot of money comes in on the Giants at -1.5. The line moves up to -2 and the money line may move to -130. Money keeps coming in on the Giants and the line moves up to -2.5. The money line may move to -140. Bookmakers and risk managers will keep moving the odds if necessary until they begin to see betting activity come in on the other side. Remember, the goal of the sportsbook is to try and have as even of a split as possible on both sides of a game. Because the winning amount is only $100 on each $110 bet, the sportsbook would pay out $5,000 worth of winnings and “hold” the $5,500 worth of bets on the losing side. Therefore, if the bet counts were exactly even on the game, the sportsbook would “win” $500 for itself on that game. The process is certainly more detailed for the sportsbooks than that, but that gives you a good overview into how sports betting odds work for the player and how odds work in sports betting for the sportsbooks themselves.
How Do Odds Work in Betting? If you are planning to start betting, be it casino gambling, sports betting, or any other type, it's important to understand the odds. It would be preposterous and absurd to think about placing bets without having a good grip on the main types of betting odds and the ability to read and interpret the various associated formats. The three main types of betting odds are fractional (British) odds, decimal (European) odds, and American (moneyline) odds. These are simply different ways of presenting the same thing and hold no difference in terms of payouts. This means that a chance (percentage probability) of an event occurring can be converted and presented in any of the aforementioned types of odds. How Fractional Odds Work. Fractional odds (aka British odds, UK odds, or traditional odds) are popular among British and Irish bookies. These are typically written with a “slash (/)” or a “hyphen (-),” e.g. 6/1 or 6-1 and announced as “six-to-one.” Fractional odds are used by some of the world’s largest bookmakers, making them the most preferred odds across the globe. Therefore, the total (potential) return on a stake can be stated as: For instance, one of the major sports betting websites listed the following fractional odds for futures betting on the team to win the 2017-18 NBA Championship. Below is a selection of the three teams that had the lowest odds of winning. Golden State Warriors: 10/11 Houston Rockets: 9/4 Cleveland Cavaliers: 7/1. It can quickly be determined that the Golden State Warriors are the favorites while the odds on Houston and Cleveland winning are longer. That is, one wins only $10 against every $11 wagered on Golden State to be the champions. Meanwhile, one wins $9 against each $4 (i.e. 3.25 times) put at stake for Houston to win, which is a bit less probable. For Cleveland, one wins $7 against each $1 bet. In the above example, if you bet $100 on Golden State to win, you could make a $90.91 profit [$100 x (10/11)], and could get back your initial stake of $100, resulting in a total payout of $190.91. However, if you wager $100 on Houston to win, you could receive a profit of $225 [$100 x (9/4)], in addition to the $100 initial stake leading to a total payout of $325. The potential profit for a Cleveland win would be even higher, as you could make a profit of $700 [$100 x (7/1)]. With the initial stake of $100 being returned, it would make for a total payout of $800. How Decimal Odds Work. Decimal odds (aka European odds, digital odds, or continental odds) are popular in continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. These are a bit easier to understand and work with. The favorites and underdogs can be spotted instantaneously by looking at the numbers. The decimal odds number represents the amount one wins for every $1 wagered. For decimal odds, the number represents the total payout, rather than the profit. In other words, your stake is already included in the decimal number (no need to add back your stake), which makes its total payout calculation easier. The total (potential) return on a stake can be calculated as: For instance, one of the renowned betting websites priced the candidates to win the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election. Here, we list the decimal odds for the candidates and the biggest long shot among the candidates listed by the bookmaker. Donald Trump: 4.00 Joe Biden: 1.3. These numbers merely represent the amount one could win against each $1 put at stake. Therefore, if one bets $100 on Donald Trump to be re-elected as president, this person could make a total payout of $400 ($100 x 4.00). This amount includes the initial stake of $100, giving a net profit of $300. Similarly, a bettor could make a total payout of $130 ($100 x 1.3) if they successfully bet $100 on Joe Biden. Deducting $100 from this return gives the bettor the net profit earned. Reviewing the prices that the bookmaker has set for each candidate, it can be determined that according to the bookmaker, the probability of Biden (favorite) winning the election is higher than that for Trump. The higher the total payout (i.e. the higher the decimal odd), the less probable (and riskier) it is for the listed candidate to win. How American (Moneyline) Odds Work. Let’s understand this with the help of an example: One of the popular betting websites priced the NCAA "Sweet 16" men's basketball game between Duke and Syracuse on March 23, 2018, with the following moneyline odds. In this matchup, there is a big difference between the two odds, indicating a much higher probability of Duke winning the game and advancing to the next round of the NCAA Tournament. Key Takeaways. The three main types of betting odds are fractional (British) odds, decimal (European) odds, and American (moneyline) odds. These are simply different ways of presenting the same thing, and hold no difference in terms of payouts. Fractional odds are the ratio of the amount (profit) won to the stake; Decimal odds represent the amount one wins for every $1 wagered; and American odds, depending on the negative or positive sign, either indicate the amount one needs to wager to win $100 or the amount one would win for every $100 staked. The Bottom Line. If you are planning to enter the betting or the gambling world, it is important to be able to understand and interpret all types of odds well. Once you have mastered the three popular types of odds (fractional, decimal, and American), you can move towards a more detailed read on this topic and find out how the house always wins. Please refer to Understanding the Math Behind Betting Odds & Gambling for the conversion between the different formats of odds, the conversion of odds into implied probabilities, and the differences between the true chances of an outcome as well as the odds on display.

The “Odds to Win” wager in pro baseball is also commonly referred to as a future odds wager. Bettors must correctly select a team to win an event that takes place a later time than the current day. The money wagered will be tied up until there is an outcome and bettors will receive fixed odds when they place the wager. The Major League Baseball (MLB) Futures market is available on a 12-month basis and the future odds are normally updated on a weekly basis at betting shops in Las Vegas and globally in the United States. Bettors can place wagers on the event in both the offseason, regular season and postseason. With so many things to bet on during the MLB, see VegasInsider's verified legal sportsbooks in the United States for more information on where you can place your bets. The most popular MLB Futures wager is on the World Series. There are currently 30 teams in MLB, divided equally into two leagues – the American and National. Each of those leagues have a champion and they meet in the World Series, which is a best-of-seven series. The first team to win four games is declared your World Series winner and MLB Futures winner. 2021 World Series Odds to Win. There are several good bets to win the World Series in 2021. The current odds on contenders who will win the World Series are: World Series Odds. The MLB World Series is usually scheduled for the third week of October and has often been referred to as the “Fall Classic.” The World Series Futures Odds for each season are made available quickly at the majority of sportsbooks at the conclusion of the previous campaign. Some sports betting operators even release the future season odds while the current MLB playoffs have not yet concluded. Since the MLB regular season is the longest of all four major sports, bookmakers don’t make one team a decisive favorite over another prior to the season. You’ll usually see three to four teams have World Series Odds listed below 10/1 (Bet $100 to win $1,000). The majority of the MLB teams will have future odds between 20/1 and 100/1 before the numbers begin to drop off. Unfortunately for some fans, there are teams with World Series Odds listed as high as 1000/1 to win the future event. Where to Bet: FanDuel BetMGM DraftKings Fox Bet Bet365 PointsBet All. How do I bet on the World Series? It’s very simple to bet on the World Series and the MLB Future Odds market is always open for business. To figure out your Win Amount, a bettor would take the betting odds offered on a team and multiply by the amount wagered. Ex. New York Yankees (20/1) to win the World Series. In the above example, the Yankees have their MLB future odds listed as a 20/1 betting choice to win the World Series. If you wager $100 on New York to win the World Series and it captures the championship, then you would win $2,000 (20 ÷ 1 x 100). You would collect $2,100, which includes your win and stake ($100). The stake is the initial dollar amount that you wager on the MLB future, either at a sportsbook or through an online sportsbook. What’s great about betting on the World Series and MLB Future Odds is that there are plenty of betting opportunities for players throughout the season. Often in the MLB season, you’ll see teams start out slow in April and May, only to rally and make the playoffs. Forecasting the turnaround isn’t easy but the returns are often great and the risk is very low in the MLB Futures market. Betting on World Series Odds. Where can I bet on the World Series? All point spreads use half points, eliminating the possibility of a tie. Teaser Card On a Teaser Card, the point spreads differ from those on the Half-Point Card. The favored teams have to cover fewer points in order to be winning selections. The underdog teams receive more points. Because of these point-spread adjustments, the payoffs are much higher than those found on the other Teaser cards. On a Reverse Teaser card, players may parlay from 3 to 8 selections and receive payoffs ranging from 20 for 1 to 5,000 for 1. All point spreads use half points, eliminating the possibility of a tie. $100,000 Parlay Card (Pro Only) Players wager $5 and select 15 games against the point spread. Halftime wagers also include any overtime periods that are played. The Delaware Lottery reserves the right to add, delete, or change its Wagering Rules and/or payoff odds at any time.
Delaware Sports Betting Information – Sportsbooks, Betting Sites. Sports Handle is your place for everything you need to know about legal Delaware sports betting. Delaware became the first state after the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) was struck down on May 14, 2018 to offer legal sports betting. Governor John Carney placed the First State’s first sports bet on June 5, 2018 at Delaware Park. All three of the state’s “racinos” are open for sports betting. Delaware was one of four states, along with Montana, Nevada and Oregon that already had sports betting laws on the books. Legal Delaware Sports Betting Information: DE Sportsbooks, Betting Sites and More. Delaware, which has long offered pro-football parlay betting, didn’t waste any time in becoming the first post-PASPA state to allow legal sports betting. According to the director of the state lottery, Vernon Kirk, Delaware was uniquely prepared to offer sports betting as the state was ready to do so in 2009 before a court decision blocked the effort. Kirk said the state really just needed to dust off existing technology and re-train employees on how to handle sports bets. The state’s Sports Lottery was first introduced in 1976, but didn’t do well and was resurrected in 2009 under then-Governor Jack Markell. The Sports Lottery limits bettors to parlays of at least three NFL games with some teaser games. Delaware governor John Carney placed the state’s first single-game sports bet (on the Phillies) at Dover Downs on June 5 to much fanfare. In the first month, the state saw handle and revenue that went beyond its projections. Where You Can Bet on Sports in Delaware. Sports betting is legal at Delaware’s three “racinos,” a racetrack that also has gambling facilities, which may include slot machines and table games. All three racinos have dedicated poker rooms. The state lottery has a contract with Scientific Games , which is partnered with William Hill US for its sports wagering offerings and risk-management. There are also over 100 retail locations that have previously taken wagers for the NFL parlay wagers, but they won’t be able to offer full-fledged wagering yet like the location below. “The retail locations will be dealing strictly with college and pro football parlay cards and that’s all for now,” said Delaware Lottery Director Vernon Kirk, in a call with Sports Handle in June. On May 14, 2018, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the state of New Jersey in Murphy vs. NCAA , overturning the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA), the 1992 federal law that prohibited full-fledged sports betting in every state except Nevada. In essence, that means sports wagering is now a states’ rights issue . Every to state is free to choose if it wants sports betting and, if so, how to regulate it and tax it. Since May 14, legal Delaware sports betting began at its three commercial casinos on June 5, and the state of New Jersey accepted its first sports bet at Monmouth Park on June 14. The road to the United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) took about seven years in a lengthy legal battle between New Jersey and the NCAA alongside the major professional sports leagues, who used PASPA to block the state from offering sports betting. The high court heard oral argument in the case in December 2017 and ruled in May, with Justice Samuel Alito authoring the majority opinion. In an opinion joined by all of the justices except Justice Ginsburg and Justice Sotomayor, Alito stated: The legalization of sports gambling requires an important policy choice, but the choice is not ours to make. Congress can regulate sports gambling directly, but if it elects not to do so, each State is free to act on its own. Our job is to interpret the law Congress has enacted and decide whether it is consistent with the Constitution. PASPA is not. PASPA ‘regulate state governments’ regulation’ of their citizens, New York, 505 U. S., at 166. The Constitution gives Congress no such power. The judgment of the Third Circuit is reversed.” New Jersey built its case on constitutional grounds — arguing that the law “commandeered” states to uphold its anti-gambling laws, or maintain them, or prevent states from repealing them — in violation of principles of state sovereignty. And it worked. Congress had overstepped its bounds. Congress could have outright banned sports wagering, and still could, but that’s not what PASPA did. The case, originally titled Christie v NCAA (it changed with the new governor), was heard by the Supreme Court after making its way through the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals, before SCOTUS granted New Jersey’s petition for a day in the high court. What Was the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act? The Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, known as PASPA, is the 1992 law that prohibits sports betting in every state except Nevada. Ironically, New Jersey senator Bill Bradley, a former New York Knick, was a driving force behind the bill. The key ideas behind the bill were to preserve the “integrity of the games,” to stop youths from betting on sports, and to prevent other states from legalizing sports betting. At the time the law was passed, New Jersey was among the states that had one year to legalize sports betting, but the state failed to do so. Three states, Delaware, Montana and Oregon did take advantage of the one-year filing deadline to continue quasi-sports betting games. The law grants the U.S. attorney general and the leagues the power to go to the courts to block a state from legalizing sports betting, which is what the leagues have done with New Jersey. For a full explanation of PASPA, click here.

How to play online poker: Winning. Before we proceed, let’s just clear up a few basics. There are four suits and two colors in a standard 52-card deck. We have two red suits – diamonds and hearts – and two black suits – clubs and spades. Face cards are jacks (J), queens (Q) and kings (K). Aces (A) can be used either as a high or low card, similarly to blackjack. Play legal, real money casino games online! Play online in NJ, PA and WV, including poker, roulette and slots at BetMGM. Unlike blackjack, you’re not only playing against the dealer, but also the others at the table. In Texas holdem, you will get five ‘community’ cards dealt, and two ‘hole’ cards. Your two hole cards are not shown to anyone else. You must use at least one of your hole cards to make the best possible hand against everyone else at the table. There will be a round of betting based upon everyone’s hole cards. The order is determined by the ‘button’ , which is a round marker rotating around the table each hand. This signifies who is the ‘dealer’ . The next two positions are the ‘small blind’ and ‘big blind’ spots. There is a pre-determined amount required to play the hand. The big blind pays the entire amount, the small blind plays half, and has the option of matching the big blind to remain in the hand. After the big blind, each player around the table has the option of either ‘calling’ , or betting the amount of the big blind, raising or folding. The betting goes all around the table until every player matches the highest bet made in a particular round. After the hole cards are bet upon, the ‘flop’ is dealt. These are the first three community cards. Another round of betting ensues. Then, a fourth card, or ‘Fourth Street’ or ‘The Turn’ , is dealt, and another round of betting, etc. Lastly, a fifth card, or ‘Fifth Street’ or ‘The River’ , is dealt, and the final bets are made before a winning hand is determined. How to play online blackjack: Strategies. There are plenty of different strategies for winning at online poker, but the best advice is to be patient. It might seem rather boring to continually fold hands, and Texas holdem can be a grind at times, but impatience is rarely rewarded, and it’s a good idea to wait for ‘Top 10’ hands. Eventually, you’ll learn about suited connectors (cards of the same suit in numerical succession), or just suited cards in general, which can be good starting hole cards. In addition, sometimes you will hit a set – or three of a kind – on the flop with cards which aren’t necessarily great hole cards initially. You’ll learn the nuances of the game as you gain more experience. For intermediate or advanced players, this is all common knowledge, but for beginners just learning the game, patience is a virtue. While various tables can have players of very different skill levels, and you do not want to play ‘tight’, or too close to the vest, using less risky play initially will mitigate big losses early on and keep your interest as you continue to learn. Eventually, you’ll also learn how to bluff, which by a series of strong wagers, can trick other players into believing your hand is stronger than it might really be. This is certainly for more advanced players, but down the road you’ll learn you can win a hand even if you have lesser hole cards than your opponent simply by wagering strategy. As you start out, you’ll need to know the order of winning hands, and memorize this list: Royal flush (AKQJ10 of the same suit) Straight flush (Five cards in sequence, same suit) Four of a kind (Same card in all four suits) Full house (Three of a kind and a pair) Flush (Five cards of the same suit, sequence not required) Straight (Five cards in sequence, suit doesn’t matter) Three of a kind (Same card in three different suits) Two pairs (two different matching numbers or face cards) One pair (two matching numbers or face cards) High card (If you do not have any matching cards, it’s simply your highest card) How to play online poker: Play responsibly. Again, please be careful initially when setting out. Do not play for more than you can afford to lose, try and limit your alcohol intake and other outside distractions, and simply focus on the game. In fact, some players like to engage in chatter at the table in person, or via ‘chat’ in a room. Block all of that out and just focus on the cards, especially early on. Remember your basic rules and don’t try and get too cute. If so, you’re going to really enjoy playing poker in the comfort of your own home. Ready to give online poker a try? How to Bet on Sports for Beginners: 12 Tips to Know. Suchat Pederson/The News Journal via USA TODAY NETWORK. Over the past few years, the emergence of daily fantasy sports has led to a renaissance for conventional sports betting. The anti-gambling stigma that existed for decades is fading in American popular culture, opening the door for a massive, multibillion-dollar legal sports betting industry to emerge. With sports betting now legal in many states, millions of sports fans will be looking to enter the betting market for the first time. But where do you begin if you’re unfamiliar with the terminology? Here’s an introduction into how to bet on sports. We’ll be adding to this series in the coming weeks. How to Bet on Sports for Beginners: 12 Tips. Use the links below to jump to each section. 1. Favorites vs. Underdogs. When the oddsmakers release a betting line on a game, the first thing they do is decide which team should be the favorite and which should be the underdog. The favorite is the team that is expected to win the game and will get a minus sign next to its odds, while the underdog is expected to lose and gets a plus sign. If the game is a toss-up, books will open it as a “pick” or “pick’em.” Click to return to table of contents . 2. Spreads. There are two main ways to bet on a favorite or an underdog. The first is the point spread, which is a bet on the margin of victory. A favorite “gives” points, while an underdog “gets” points. For example, say the Patriots are 7-point favorites (-7) against the Jets. If you bet on the Patriots, they need to win the game by 8 points or more for you to win your bet. If the Patriots win by 8 points or more, you “cover.” If the Patriots win by exactly 7 points, that is called a “push,” which means you get back the money you originally bet. If the Patriots win by 6 points or fewer (or lose the game straight-up), you lose your bet. Spreads are available for all sports, but they are predominantly used when betting on higher-scoring sports like football and basketball. 3. Moneylines. The second way to bet on a favorite or an underdog is on the moneyline. This is based solely on which team will win the game. Favorites are given a “minus” designation, such as -150, -200 or -500. If a favorite is -200, that means you have to risk $200 to win $100. If the favorite wins, you get $100, but if the favorite loses, you’re out $200. Because favorites are expected to win, you assume more risk when betting on them. Moneylines are available for all sports, but they are predominantly used when betting on lower-scoring sports like baseball, hockey and soccer. 4. Over/Unders (Totals) In addition to setting a line for the favorite and the underdog, oddsmakers will also set a total number of points scored in a game by both teams combined. This is called the total or over/under. Bettors can then wager on whether or not the game will go Over or Under the total. For example, an NBA game between the Celtics and Bulls might have a total of 215. You could either bet the Over 215 or the Under 215. If you bet the Over 215 and the total points scored end up being 216 or higher, you win your bet. If the total points scored are 214 or fewer, you lose. 5. What Is the -110 Number Listed Next to My Bet? The oddsmakers put a “tax” on every bet, which is typically called the “juice” or “vig” (short for “vigorish”). The juice is the commission you have to pay to the sportsbook for them to accept your wager. Say the Duke Blue Devils are -5 (-110) … that means if you want to bet on Duke as a 5-point favorite, you need to risk $110 to win $100. You always have to risk more on a favorite than you’d win on an underdog…otherwise, sportsbooks would be out of business. 6. How to Place a Bet. With legalized sports betting spreading across America, sports bettors have never had more options to take advantage of. To see if sports betting is legal where you live, check out our state-by-state tracker. Some of the biggest states that have legalized mobile wagering include Colorado, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana and West Virginia. The sportsbooks highlighted below are all trustworthy legal shops that take bets online.

Michigan launches online sports betting, casino games Friday. LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Online sports betting and casino games will start in Michigan at noon Friday, an expansion of options for gamblers who now wager through offshore sites. State regulators have authorized licenses for all three Detroit casinos and seven of the dozen tribes with “Class III” casinos. Additional operator and platform provider licenses are expected to be approved in coming weeks. Michigan Gaming Control Board Executive Director Richard Kalm this week called the launch a “new era,” saying it will give casinos an additional way to engage with customers and provide state and local governments with extra tax revenue. Large players in the U.S. mobile gambling market such as DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM are launching apps and enticing people age 21 and older with deals to sign up. Big sporting events this weekend including the AFC and NFC championship games and a UFC bout featuring start Conor McGregor. Sports and internet gambling were legalized under a law enacted more than a year ago, before the coronavirus pandemic struck. Casinos began accepting in-person sports wagers in March but had to wait for the creation of a licensing system for online operations, which have taken on increased significance amid state-ordered shutdowns or capacity restrictions at casinos to curb COVID-19. “It’s clear to us that there’s incredible demand among Michiganders for at least sports betting. But my expectation is that online casino and in due course poker will be equally popular,” said BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt. His company’s app — previously launched in 10 states — is connected to MGM Resorts, including the Detroit casino and hotel. Greenblatt said the state’s 8.4% online sports betting tax is “very sensible,” allowing licensed operators to compete with offshore sites. “You’ve got a group of players who have long been betting offshore. We would like to see them bring their play back on shore,” he said. He said there will be minimal if any “cannibalization” of business from players who typically visit casinos but instead will play on the internet. “We see an expansion of the market — so new players coming in to enjoy our product,” Greenblatt said, adding that MGM, like other casinos, will incentivize online gamblers to redeem rewards points by visiting onsite. Casinos offering online games like blackjack will pay a tax of between 20% and 28%, depending on their amount of adjusted gross receipts. Net new annual revenues to the state and Detroit, which has commercial casinos, are projected to total $18.6 million and $13.7 million respectively, according to the Michigan Department of Treasury. The money will go to the state’s school aid fund, which covers public schools. It also will be earmarked to a state fund that compensates first responders for lost wages and medical benefits if they get cancer from fighting fires. Municipalities with tribal casinos will receive a portion of tax revenues, too. Noting of flurry of internet gambling and sports betting ads in recent weeks, state Attorney General Dana Nessel urged potential online gamblers to read the fine print before signing up. “In some instances, site users may be required to spend or deposit a certain amount of money into an account before receiving their free play credits, and users should make themselves aware of such conditions so they are not taken off guard,” she said.
How To Gamble: Sports Betting & Online Casino. Ever since online gambling sites were launched back in the ‘90s, the gambling industry hasn’t stopped expanding and evolving. Nowadays, if you wish to gamble, you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your home. There are so many online platforms where you can play a game of poker or bet on your favorite team. However, this wide range of casinos and sports betting sites can also be overwhelming and leave gambling newbies overwhelmed. If you wish to put your luck to the test but you are a gambling virgin, here are a couple of tips that will help you to better understand these sites and how they work. Always look for legit sites. Regardless of whether you wish to play blackjack, bingo, poker, craps, or bet on a basketball game, you should always make sure the site you are gambling on or placing a bet at is licensed. Online casinos and sportsbooks answer to no one when they do not possess a legitimate license. That means they can take your funds, keep your deposit as well as winnings and you won’t be able to do a thing about it. Even worse, they may steal your credit card information and make your life a living hell. Therefore, check out online reviews to see what others have to say about your chosen platform. For example, take a look at what Casino Bros offers. There, you will find a list of tested, licensed, legit casinos so you won’t have to worry about your safety when gambling online. Start small. You won’t become rich overnight, but you can easily lose your life savings in one sitting if you get carried away. Therefore, instead of making large bets, start small. While you are still getting the hang of things and working on your strategies, don’t bet too much per contestant or invest too much in a game of poker. When you start betting, determine how much you have for a bankroll and set this amount aside. Don’t use it for anything else, just for sports betting. Divide this amount by 100, and do not make larger bets than this amount. This is a good strategy if you are just diving into the gambling pool and trying to figure out what your best options are. Of course, you are going to make mistakes, but with such small bets, it won’t matter so much. Focus on one sport. Usually, newbie bettors start their gambling journey by betting on big games, such as the NCAA basketball tournament. This may sound logical, but betting on something you do not know a great deal about is a huge mistake. Instead of betting on everything, focus on one thing. You cannot know everything there is about NFL, MLB, as well as NBA, so pick one sport and stick with it. Even better, focus on one smaller part of one sport. Required information. Keep in mind that at some point you’ll be asked to provide identification documents. This is a completely standard procedure and you have nothing to worry about, especially if you are using a legit platform. This way, sites are able to prevent fraud and money laundering. Preferable deposit methods. Although you will be able to make a deposit with your credit or debit card, it is better to use an e-wallet. This way you won’t have to leave your credit card number on a gambling site, and your mind will be at ease. It is interesting that a lot of casinos and sportsbooks have started to accept Bitcoin deposits in recent years. Keep in mind that betting online is addictive, although no more than betting offline. Therefore, if you feel like your gambling habits are getting out of your hands, take a break from these activities and seek help before this problem gets any worse.
Big game, big worries? Gambling addiction grows with Illinois’ booming sports betting industry — ‘It’s in your face all the time’ The number of Illinoisans seeking help for problem gambling has almost doubled since legislators approved a massive gambling expansion in 2019. Experts expect that number to keep growing. Share this story. Share this on Facebook Share this on Twitter. Share All sharing options for: Big game, big worries? Gambling addiction grows with Illinois’ booming sports betting industry — ‘It’s in your face all the time’ A man who requested that he only be identified as Anthony stands by a window in a high-rise condo near Soldier Field on Friday. The Tinley Park man is a recovering sports gambling addict. Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times. Thousands of football fans will be placing their first legal Super Bowl bets in Illinois this weekend, and for most, a little action will make the big game just a bit more entertaining. But, for some, it might open the door to regular betting, adding a quick dopamine hit to the regular season viewing experience. Maybe they’ll have to start budgeting for a new habit. Maybe they’ll have to start borrowing for it. And, for a select few, it will get worse. It’s already gotten worse for hundreds of people statewide since Illinois legislators approved a massive gaming expansion a year and a half ago, introducing legal sports wagering to a state that’s already packed with more places to gamble than Las Vegas. The COVID-19 pandemic has made matters even worse, according to Luke, a Chicago-area problem gambler who was able to get out of the game nine years ago. Economic uncertainty and the general malaise of the quarantine lifestyle make gambling all the more enticing. “It used to be that there was a stigma, and gambling was taboo. It was seedy,” said Luke, who asked that his full name not be used. “Now, you can do it on your phone. The companies that are doing it are publicly traded Fortune 500 companies.” A man who asked that he only be identified as Anthony reads news about the Super Bowl on his phone Friday. Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times. Calls to the state’s gambling disorder hotline more than doubled from 2019 to 2020, when 13,258 people reached out either there or online for information on a problem that experts say is out of sight but front of mind for a growing number of bettors and their families. The Illinois Department of Human Services, which aims to connect problem gamblers with counseling resources, calls that a “dramatic increase.” In 2019, about 580 people received treatment for gambling disorders through state-sponsored programs across Illinois. That figure jumped past 1,000 in 2020, and experts say it doesn’t even cut the deck as only an estimated 3% of problem gamblers acknowledge they have a problem, and even fewer seek treatment. Counseling gets boost with Illinois gambling expansion — but more addiction is sure to follow. State’s all-in gambling expansion offers new temptation for those struggling to stay out. Hundreds more took the more drastic step of banning themselves from casinos and the smartphone betting apps that have them hooked. About 13,500 people were enrolled in the self-exclusion program maintained by regulators at the Illinois Gaming Board in mid-2019, but that number has since shot past 14,000. Many of those gamblers cite their temptations as coming from the state’s 10 casinos, three horse racing tracks and 7,233 bars, restaurants, gas stations and VFW halls that also house slot machines. But since mobile sports betting launched last summer, Illinoisans can now gamble 24/7 from the comfort of home — and they’ve already lost more than $101 million doing so, according to Gaming Board revenue figures. Blackhawks analyst Eddie Olczyk placed Illinois first legal sports bet in March 2019. Gamblers across the state have wagered more than $1.4 billion since then — and lost $101 million. Ashlee Rezin Garcia/Sun-Times. As the billion-dollar industry keeps growing, addiction counselors say they’re hearing more and more from young people glued to the sports betting apps whose ads saturate Illinois airwaves and billboards. “It’s in your face all the time,” said Dr. Teresa Garate of the Gateway Foundation, a network of 16 addiction treatment centers statewide. “It’s becoming a part of everyday life. Everyone accepts it, but it’s a serious trigger for some.” That’s the case for Anthony, a 36-year-old recovering problem gambler from southwest suburban Tinley Park, who said he often finds himself changing the station as sports talk radio hosts dissect the latest betting lines. “It’ll just be too much, it’s too close,” Anthony said. “Even though I don’t think it’ll lead me down there, I know better than to let my mind start thinking like that.” Anthony reads his favorite passages from ‘A Day at a Time’ a book by Gamblers Anonymous. Tyler LaRiviere/Sun-Times. Elizabeth Thielen, a senior director at Nicasa Behavioral Health Services, said she’s seen yearly increases of people seeking help for gambling disorders across Chicago’s north suburbs, but a “real burst” of clients has sought them out in the past nine months. “The ages we’re seeing are trending younger, and I think that’s directly related to sports betting,” Thielen said. “At the same time, I feel hopeful because you have young people showing a surprising level of insight to find help.” Way Back Inn executive director Anita Pindiur is pictured outside the Maywood facility in 2019. Sun-Times file. While there’s been an influx of new problem gamblers, the potential for relapse is an equal concern for Dr. Anita Pindiur, executive director of the Way Back Inn, a Maywood treatment center. About 10 former patients have already returned to the Way Back Inn for counseling this football season alone. “Sometimes, we forget how quickly it can happen,” Pindiur said. “These things are advertised in a way that they’re fun and entertaining, and they should be. But often there is no set of limits or recognition of the limits until we get our credit-card bill, or somebody points it out.” Illinois sports betting market could rival Nevada’s, analysts say. Sports bettors have already wagered $1.4 billion since legal industry launched in Illinois. COVID-19 puts new Illinois casino licenses on hold. Besides financial ruin, experts say people who suffer from gambling addiction are more likely to suffer from substance abuse issues, turn to crime or even attempt suicide. “I was losing everything,” said Patrick, a 35-year-old Niles man who’s 13 months removed from his last bet. “I’d have a paycheck on a Friday afternoon and it would be gone by Friday night. My relationships with my family and whoever I was dating, it just got out of control. I was lying, I was stealing, I was doing all these crazy things.” As sports betting has been brought out of the shadows into everyday life, counselors say their challenge now is removing the stigma around seeking treatment for addiction — and they say they’re making progress through increased awareness. That’s been boosted with the help of $7 million set aside in the state’s gambling expansion law in grants for treatment centers, which have used a lot of that money to bolster advertising. The Way Back Inn is one of only a handful of addiction treatment centers in Illinois that provide a gambling-specific program. Sun-Times file. “One of the biggest barriers to treatment is stigma, especially for gambling,” said Garate, from the Gateway Foundation. “People don’t see it as a real addiction. It is, and help is out there.” Just how many people need help is unclear. Experts generally estimate that between 2% and 5% of the population deal with gambling disorder, which would project to about 635,000 people across Illinois, including about 136,000 in Chicago. TO GET HELP. For more information on problem gambling support, call 1-800-GAMBLER or text “ILGAMB” to 53342. But there’s been no comprehensive study of the problem in Illinois since 1999, well before video slots dotted the walls at thousands of establishments across the state and sportsbooks were accessible anywhere that had a cellphone signal. “You have to believe those numbers are different now,” Thielen said. The state Department of Human Services is out to find out just how much they’ve shifted with the onslaught of gambling options. The agency launched a $500,000 study last fall surveying treatment providers, problem gamblers and others to gauge the prevalence of addiction, especially among populations considered vulnerable or marginalized due to race, culture, economic or social disparity. “We want to know what’s the challenge, and what should we look for,” said David Jones, who directs the department’s Substance Use Prevention and Recovery Division. “Then, you can start to bring more evidence-based solutions on a size consistent with the scale of the challenge.”

Casinos, Online Sports Betting Gaining Traction In Virginia. Along with drafting regulations for proposed casinos, the Virginia Lottery has approved five permits for live sports wagering in Virginia. Mark Hand , Patch Staff. VIRGINIA — The Virginia Lottery Board on Wednesday approved initial regulations for proposed casinos in Bristol, Danville, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Richmond. In 2020, the General Assembly designated the Virginia Lottery as the regulator of casinos in the state, along with mobile sports wagering. For casinos, the Virginia Lottery will require that each game that operates electronically be connected to a central monitor and control system. Casino wagers must be conducted only with tokens, chips, or electronic cards purchased from the facility operator. Casinos will not be allowed to extend credit to players. The Virginia Lottery said it will refine the initial regulations through a rulemaking process that will include an opportunity for public participation. The 2020 casino legislation passed by the General Assembly required adoption of an initial regulatory framework by April 2021. At its Wednesday meeting, the Virginia Lottery Board also received an update on the recent launch of mobile sports betting in Virginia. Live sports wagering launched in Virginia on Jan. 21 and now includes five approved permit holders: FanDuel in conjunction with the Washington Football Team; Draft Kings; BetMGM LLC; Rivers Casino Portsmouth; and Caesars Virginia LLC. "The Lottery's role as regulator is based on its three-decade track record as a respected and trusted gaming authority in the Commonwealth," Kevin Hall, executive director of the Virginia Lottery, said in a statement. "The Lottery's professional staff and our Board will work to protect the public interest by ensuring the integrity of casino gaming through the strict enforcement of the law and our regulations." For casino operators, the Virginia Lottery said it will conduct a review of casino operators when applications are submitted, including criminal history and financial reviews of designated gaming operators. Regulatory requirements also will specify internal controls and on-site security and surveillance requirements.

Biden builds out Cabinet with choices for Commerce and Labor secretaries. President-elect Joe Biden is urging all Americans to follow the advice of health and medical professionals when making their Thanksgiving plans amid the ongoing pandemic. Biden says he and his wife Jill are having the same discussions. (Nov. 16) AP Domestic. President-elect Joe Biden announced Thursday his choices of Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo to lead the Commerce Department and Boston Mayor Marty Walsh to head the Labor Department. In fleshing out his economics team, Biden also named: • Isabel Guzman to head the Small Business Administration. She is a former senior adviser and deputy chief of staff at the agency who is now director of California's Office of the Small Business Advocate. • Don Graves to serve as deputy secretary of Commerce. Former President Barack Obama put Graves in charge of helping revive Detroit when it grappled with bankruptcy by working with municipal, state, business, and community leaders. Graves is a former executive director of the President’s Council on Jobs and Competitiveness and deputy assistant secretary for small business, community development, and housing policy in the Treasury Department. “This team will help us emerge from the most inequitable economic and jobs crisis in modern history by building an economy where every American is in on the deal,” Biden said in a statement. “They share my belief that the middle class built this country and that unions built the middle class.” Biden has now named his picks to lead all of the federal departments. One of the most prominent now is the census, which happens every 10 years to reapportion House seats in Congress by population, and carries implications for how federal money is distributed. The 2020 census has been mired in controversy for years because of disputes about who should be counted. The Trump administration sought to not count undocumented immigrants, but Democrats said the Constitution calls for everyone to be counted. The department, as its name implies, also helps negotiate trade agreements. And the department includes functions such as the National Weather Service and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, which deals with fisheries. Raimondo, the first woman to become governor of her state, had been considered as a running mate for Biden before his selection of Vice President-elect Kamala Harris. Raimondo has touted economic growth the state enjoyed before the pandemic. But her potential appointment had been opposed by progressive advocates who were critical of her policies, including her overhaul of the state pension system. When Raimondo campaigned for reelection in 2018, she faced union opposition and a progressive challenger, who was supported by groups aligned with Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt. The advocacy group Demand Progress opposed Raimondo's appointment to any Cabinet post, citing problems with state health insurance programs. Raimondo became the first woman governor of Rhode Island in 2015. During her administration, the state invested in infrastructure, education and job training. The state became the fourth in the country to offer tuition-free community college to every high school graduate, a national goal for Biden as president. Raimondo, a former venture-capital executive who co-founded Point Judith Capital, won statewide election as general treasurer in 2010. She overhauled the state pension system, which had a $7 billion unfunded liability. Provisions included eliminating cost-of-living increases, raising the retirement age and moving workers into different retirement accounts, which sparked union opposition. Raimondo, whose grandfather immigrated from Italy, grew up in Smithfield. She graduated with honors in economics from Harvard University, won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University, where she earned a doctorate, and graduated from Yale Law School. One of Biden's priorities in combating the COVID-19 pandemic is to have OSHA develop regulations for workers to return safely to their jobs. Walsh is a former top union leader. But his selection signals a choice against the diversity in the rest of the Cabinet. Walsh is white, but others considered for the slot included California Labor Secretary Julie Su, an Asian woman, and AFL-CIO chief economist Bill Spriggs, a Black man. Walsh, a Boston native and lifelong resident, was swiftly embraced by labor unions as one of their own. American Trucking Associations CEO Chris Spear commended Walsh for “a deep understanding of labor issues” and his experience working with building trades as mayor. “The professional drivers, mechanics, dock workers, dispatchers – the millions of individuals who make up the workforce of our industry - are the critical resource that powers trucking and our economy,” Spear said. Paul Rinaldi, president of the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, also praised Walsh as a journeyman member of the Laborers’ International Union of North America and former president of the Boston Building and Construction Trades Council. “Mayor Walsh will bring to the job the deep understanding of what solidarity truly means, and the critical importance of collective bargaining," Rinaldi said. "Our nation is hurting badly as this COVID-19 pandemic rages. To recover and rebuild, it will take the collective efforts of working men and women nationwide." As a recovering alcoholic, Walsh has led a lifetime commitment to preventing and treating alcoholism. He earned a degree in political science from Boston College.

Hopkins pavlik betting odds. Press Release: So you think you know who will win Saturday's light heavyweight battle between world middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik and two-division world champion Bernard "The Executioner" Hopkins? "The fight is at a catch-weight of 170 pounds. Pavlik is a natural middleweight coming up in class, fighting Hopkins, who the heavier weight-class favors," said Chuck Esposito, Assistant Vice President of Race & Sports Book Operations at Caesars Palace. "Hopkins is a very unorthodox fighter, very elusive and tough to hit. This may be the toughest fight of Pavlik's career. The early action has been on Pavlik. He has been bet up from roughly a 3 1/2 to 1 favorite to the current odds of a 5 -1 favorite."
Kelly Pavlik vs Will Rosinsky Betting Odds and Preview. Kelly Pavlik vs Will Rosinsky Preview July 7th. Kelly Pavlik, the former WBC and WBO middleweight champion, will be stepping into the ring again for the second time in just over a month when he takes on Will Rosinsky in a 10-round super middleweight tilt at Carson, California’s Home Depot Center. This will be Pavlik’s fourth bout in the super middleweight division. Pavlik upped his record to 39-2, with 34 KOs on June 8 when he beat Scott Sigmon by a seventh-round TKO and the 30-year old is hoping to earn a title shot or big-money fight before the year’s out. The 27-year-old Rosinsky of New York, who has a 16-1, record with 9 KOs, pounded out an eight-round unanimous decision over Aaron Pryor on June 14, meaning he’s actually had less time than Pavlik to prepare for this bout. Rosinsky’s a good boxer and in his prime, and shouldn’t be a pushover for Pavlik. His lone loss came to Edwin Rodriguez by a 10-round unanimous decision last October. He’s 5-foot-10 with a 70-inch reach while Pavlik of Youngstown, Ohio stands. Just over 6-foot-2 and has a 75 inch wingspan. Pavlik has had trouble with alcohol addiction over the past couple of years and moved to California to get away from his bad hometown influences. He’s been working with new trainer Robert Garcia for the past couple of fights and is determined to put his name back on the top of the boxing map. Rosinsky said it’s going to be the toughest fight of his career, but he’s definitely ready for it. He said he wasn’t really impressed with Pavlik’s performance last month in the win over Sigmon and thought Pavlik looked slower at the heavier weight and had lost some of his power. He added that he’s got nothing to lose since he’s the underdog and believes Pavlik can be beaten. He also feels Pavlik is a little burnt out since he’s been a pro for a dozen years now, but still regards him as a great fighter. Pavlik will be motivated for this bout and he knows he needs to win it in impressive styles if he’s going to get a big fight in the near future. He won’t take it easy on Rosinsky, but he won’t find it easy either. Pavlik’s used to the big name bouts and needs to realize this is a 10 rounder, not 12. He won’t be able to afford to give any rounds away and needs to take control right from the get go. He’s only lost twice in his career, to Bernard Hopkins by unanimous decision in 2008 and to Sergio Martinez by unanimous decision in 2010. Prediction. Rosinsky will need to fight on the inside and try to stop Pavlik from extending his longer arms. Pavlik will be trying to keep his opponent at bay and will be looking to land his powerful straight right hand. Pavlik can launch himself back into the limelight with a win here, but a loss will probably see him struggle to become a serious contender again. Knowing there’s so much on the line; Pavlik should be able to stop Rosinsky in the second half of the fight.
Best Old Man performances vs a younger opponent? Forums Boxing British and Irish Boxing. Maxsplit. Just reading interviews where Golovkin is saying 'he feels 25' . It sounds like he's concerned he's 36 and Canlo is still yet to peak, age wise. But regardless of that what are the best old man performances? In recent years Klitschko - the same age as me - putting Joshua on the floor and almost finishing him was pretty incredible. Hopkins, in his 50s, ending the KO run of Kovalev and going in as a betting favourite in some places was off the scale. Sergio Martinez had some big wins at nearly 40 too, I think? Tottenham vs Liverpool Betting Tips: Latest odds, team news, preview and predictions. Tottenham will be aiming to move past Liverpool in the Premier League table when the sides meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Thursday. Spurs come into this clash a point adrift of the champions and enjoying an eight-match unbeaten streak in all competitions. Tottenham vs Liverpool Latest Odds. However, they remain 23/10 (3.30) outsiders with bet365 to come out on top against a team they have not beaten in seven encounters. Editors' Picks. Pedro Leon: How Real Madrid's potential star became Mourinho's punching bag Man Utd's Robertson & Alexander-Arnold? Shaw & Wan-Bissaka finally meeting Solskjaer's expectations Gundogan: One of Klopp's favourites who can settle title race for Man City 'You can't play for Man Utd if you don't have mental strength' - Rashford opens up on setbacks & Solskjaer. Jurgen Klopp’s team is in freefall after claiming just three points from the last available 15 in the league but are available at 11/10 (2.10) to get back on track with a big win here. Three of the guests’ last five league fixtures have resulted in draws, and you can get odds of 13/5 (3.60) on them claiming a single point yet again. Tottenham vs Liverpool Team News. Matt Doherty, Dele Alli and Ben Davies will all face late fitness tests, while Giovani Lo Celso is definitely ruled out. Jordan Henderson should return after missing the last two matches with a muscle injury and Joel Matip could feature, although Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Naby Keita and Diogo Jota all remain sidelined. Tottenham vs Liverpool Preview. Having moved top of the league with a home win over this opposition before thrashing Crystal Palace three days later to secure first place at Christmas, the Reds have effectively imploded since then. Without a win in five league matches, they have also scored just once in that period and failed to find the net in any of the most recent four games. With seven clean sheets to their name in the last 10 matches in their own backyard, Jose Mourinho’s men will certainly back themselves to cause more frustration for such out-of-sorts visitors. However, they are unlikely to open themselves up too much despite their superior form, instead sticking to the type of counter-attacking game plan that has seen them beat Manchester City 2-0, Arsenal 2-0 and draw 0-0 away to Chelsea this campaign. Tottenham vs Liverpool Tips and Predictions. With this in mind, odds of 11/10 (2.10) seem generous on under 2.5 goals being scored for Liverpool’s sixth consecutive league game, as well as a fifth in six on home turf for Tottenham. All odds correct at time of writing. Please gamble responsibly.
Liverpool vs Burnley Betting Tips: Latest odds, team news, preview and predictions. Liverpool have the chance to end a pair of Premier League droughts on Thursday evening when they welcome Burnley to Anfield. Sunday afternoon’s tepid 0-0 draw at home to Manchester United made it three games without a goal and four since their last victory in the top-flight, continuing a miserable winter for the Reds. Liverpool vs Burnley Latest Odds. Despite Liverpool’s poor form, bet365 make them just 1/5 (1.20) to pick up a first Premier League win since December 19 when they triumphed 7-0 at Crystal Palace. Burnley were the only visiting team to avoid defeat on this ground last season, picking up a 1-1 draw, and another stalemate is priced at 11/2 (6.50) . In fact, the Clarets have only ever won on one of their 12 league trips to Anfield and are priced at 14/1 (15.0) to stun the champions. Liverpool vs Burnley Team News. Joel Matip was not deemed fit enough to start against Manchester United but he could return for this one, however Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Naby Keita, Kostas Tsimikas and Diogo Jota all remain out. Charlie Taylor and Jimmy Dunne could both return for Sean Dyche’s side, while backup goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell is still out. Liverpool vs Burnley Preview. Liverpool were somewhat lucky to escape with a draw against Man United after below-par performance, but perhaps the most damning indictment of their current form is that they have scarcely deserved anything more. Indeed, since their 7-0 win at Palace, the Reds have managed only 10 shots on target – the fourth-fewest in the league during the time – despite taking 62 shots in total. They could have yet more struggles against a strong Burnley defence that has conceded just five goals in their last eight Premier League games, not letting in more than one in a single fixture since November 28. Liverpool vs Burnley Tips and Predictions. The hosts will be desperate to get back on track with victory here but given their struggles in front of goal and Burnley’s well-drilled defence, 11/8 (2.38) on under 2.5 goals from bet365 looks a strong selection for this Premier League clash. This bet has paid out in Liverpool's last four league games and seven of the Clarets' last eight, Odds correct at the time of writing. Please gamble responsibly.
Arizona Tribal Casinos, Pro Teams Included In Sports Betting Proposal. Sports betting proposals have been shot down in Arizona for various reasons over the past few years, but 2021 could be different. That’s because of two important factors. First, Gov. Doug Ducey stated he wants legal AZ sports betting in his State of the State address. Second, Ducey told legislators he renegotiated compacts with Arizona’s gaming tribes, which were set to expire in 2022 . That allows for another expansion of gaming in the addition of keno , and could indicate broader appetite for compromise. A joint proposal in HB 2772 and SB 1797 would legalize sports betting as well as daily fantasy sports and keno. Both have been read twice and will get committee hearings next week. Sports betting wouldn’t be allowed until those renegotiated compacts are signed and approved at the federal level. Proposed Arizona sports betting details. The proposed legislation – called event wagering in the actual bills – states sports betting can be operated by gaming tribes on their land and by professional sports teams, NASCAR and the PGA Tour off-reservation. There would be 20 total licenses, half for the pro sports operators and half for tribal operators. That could get some pushback considering there are 16 tribes that operate 24 casinos throughout the state. There are also fewer than 10 professional sports operators that would qualify as an event wagering operator: MLB’s Diamondbacks NBA’s Suns and WNBA’s Mercury (both owned by Robert Sarver ) NFL’s Cardinals NHL’s Coyotes Phoenix Raceway TPC Scottsdale. Kiosks in play as well. The stadiums, arenas, and courses associated with the above teams and leagues could also offer betting kiosks. They could also partner with one horse racing track to offer betting there as well. Their apps would be geofenced so they couldn’t operate on tribal land, however. The bills suggest each licensee could have more than one online sports betting skin with no maximum listed. The event wagering operators could be licensed for five years while sportsbook operators would get two-year licenses. No fees or tax rates were defined in the bills. What kind of betting would be allowed? The proposal specifically legalizes betting on both esports and Olympic contests. Those can sometimes be overlooked or not explicitly be allowed, causing confusion for regulators. Betting on the outcome of college sports is allowed under the proposal, but prop betting on collegiate events is prohibited. Bettors would be allowed to wager on in-state schools. The Arizona Department of Gaming gets the power to authorize what kind of props and parlays can be offered on pro sports. Professional sports leagues could make out pretty well in the bill. They can request real-time betting data from operators and can also enter into agreements with licenses for n integrity fee . Official league data would also be required if a league requested. Other states could benefit from AZ sports betting. Arizona has five border states, three of which – Colorado , Nevada and New Mexico – all have some form of legal sports betting. It’s hopeful bettors in those other two border states of California and Utah could benefit. Sports betting in California is a tricky issue that involves tribal gaming operators wanting sports betting for themselves. And you might have a better chance of meeting a unicorn than passing sports betting in Utah. The fact that there’s no in-person registration mentioned in the legislation means bettors in either state would only need to cross into Arizona to legally place a bet.
Michigan Online Sports Betting Review: How 6 Apps Fared, Plus Early User Data Figures. Michigan launched online sports betting on January 22, with a handful of companies offering their services in the 10th most populous state in America. I downloaded six of the sports betting apps to test them out during the first weekend. Here is a look at how they fared in terms of downloads, potential market share and promotional offers. DraftKings: The app from Draftkings Inc (NASDAQ: DKNG) is incredibly easy to use, which shouldn’t come as a surprise given the company's strong market share in the states it operates in. What was surprising was how hard it was at first to login and use the app during the first weekend live in Michigan. The app crashed numerous times and unfortunately became the app used the least by me due to tech problems. DraftKings offered signup bonuses, matching deposits and $100 free to play blackjack in the casino portion of the app. The company had some bets that were pretty close to being guaranteed winners, such as on the chances of a first quarter touchdown or more than 0.5 touchdowns scored in the NFL Conference Championship. FanDuel: Flutter Entertainment ADR 's (OTC: PDYPY) FanDuel app had several login problems for me, but operated very well during the first few days of legal betting in the state. The app did feature a warning the first couple days that due to increased volume, settlement on some winning bets could take up to 30 minutes. Barstool Sportsbook: The Barstool Sportsbook was launched by Penn National Gaming, Inc (NASDAQ: PENN) in Michigan. Barstool offered $10 in free bets for new users in the state and another $5 for those who filled out their favorite sports on their profile. One of the things that really sets the app apart from the competition is Barstool's unique personalities for betting ideas, such as odds boosts and suggested bets. BetRivers: The lesser known BetRivers brand comes from Rush Street Interactive Inc (NYSE: RSI), which went public via a SPAC. The company offered free promotional money to people who signed up on opening weekend. The app was easy to use and offered a wide range of prop bets and odds-boosted events. Many of the boosted bets came with limits of $100, higher than competitors. PointsBet: Another lesser known company, PointsBet Holdings Ltd. (OTC: PBTHF), puts out one of the apps I was looking forward to testing out. One of the promotions PointsBet offered was betting on the Detroit Pistons spread. For every point the Pistons scored, users got $1 in free bets. BetMGM: A joint venture between MGM Resorts International (NYSE: MGM) and GVC International, the BetMGM app is very easy to use, and I was surprised with the amount of odds boosts from the company. Other Options: Other companies that launched in Michigan but whose apps I did not test or download were Golden Nugget Online Gaming (NASDAQ: GNOG), William Hill, Wynn Resorts, Limited (NASDAQ: WYNN) and TwinSpires, owned by Churchill Downs, Inc. (NASDAQ: CHDN). Michigan also recently approved sports betting and online poker from Fox Bet, which is partially owned by Fox Corp (NASDAQ: FOX) and Flutter Entertainment. Early App Data: Michigan is expected to release official sports betting figures in late February. Bank of America analyst Shaun C. Kelley is out with some early data about the companies that launched online sports betting and iGaming in Michigan. App download data shows DraftKings and FanDuel as the early leaders in the state with 40% and 27% market share, respectively. Barstool Sportsbook and BetMGM fought it out for third place with 14% and 13% of app downloads, respectively. The app downloads showed lower numbers from William Hill, PointsBet and TwinSpires. BetRivers offered an online download and not a mobile app, so downloads were not reported. Kelley sees Michigan market share shaking out to 30% share for each of FanDuel and DraftKings, and 10% to 15% each for Barstool Sportsbook and BetMGM. Others could have single digit market share, according to Kelley. Benzinga’s Take: As you can see, the betting platforms tested offered some large incentives to get users to sign-up as well as place bets on Michigan-related teams. The question will now turn to which app is the best and easiest to use and which one users stick around for. The early results show sets of tiers for the sports betting players in Michigan. DraftKings and FanDuel look like early winners, followed by Barstool and BetMGM. The race could be for third place, then shaking out if any other app can gain 5% share in the state.
Go big or go home: America’s multi-billion dollar sports betting business. Super Bowl Sunday is the biggest sporting -- and betting -- event of the year. Despite the pandemic, bookkeepers are expecting wagers worth more than $4 billion this year. Since its expansion outside Nevada in 2018, the legal betting industry has ballooned, with New Jersey emerging as the biggest market in the country. Hari Sreenivasan reports on why, the odds are, the industry will keep growing. Read the Full Transcript. Hari Sreenivasan: It's Super Bowl weekend, which means that in addition to two teams playing for the NFL championship, it's also the biggest betting event of the year. 23 million people will wager an estimated $4.3 billion dollars on the game according to industry estimates. Betting has always been part of sports – legal or not, but since the expansion of legal sports betting outside of Nevada in 2018. It's suddenly much more visible. Just over the Hudson River from New York City, at the Fanduel Sportsbook at the Meadowlands in New Jersey, capacity is limited to 35 percent as a COVID precaution. But that doesn't mean that it's not busy. Andrew Kleiman: We've done our best to create an environment where they're able to at least feel comfortable being in here and be socially distanced so I don't think the excitement is any different. I think, if anything, the excitement is more this year than it was last year. Hari Sreenivasan: Andrew Kleiman is the Senior Director of Operations for the sportsbook. It is the largest sports betting operation in the country, and part of the dramatic growth of the industry in New Jersey since becoming legal. Last year, New Jersey sportsbooks took in nearly $400 million in revenue. It was nearly $100 million more than 2019, despite the pandemic. And it generated more than $50 million in state taxes. Andrew Kleiman: When we were able to open up, it almost was like a perfect storm where all the sports came back, and people actually wagered more than they did last year. So needless to say, it was a really good year for us. Hari Sreenivasan: The growth has also been driven by the fact that in New Jersey, you don't have to physically be here, you can just use your phone. In fact, more than 90 percent of the wagers in New Jersey are done online. It's part of a huge change since New Jersey led the effort nationally to legalize sports gambling outside of Nevada. As Newshour Weekend reported back in 2015, boosters of sports betting in the Garden State had been pushing to legalize the practice for years. In central New Jersey one racetrack even preemptively built out this space in anticipation of the rules changing. In May of 2018, the Supreme Court struck down a 1992 law that had prohibited it. and within months, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy was placing a legal bet in that same sports book that had been built years earlier. Today, 20 states and Washington D.C. have legalized sports gambling in some form, with another 19 either considering legislation or working on regulations to actually start operations. Chris Grove: We're unlikely to see another expansion of gambling that occurs this rapidly for a generation, if not more. Hari Sreenivasan: Chris Grove is a partner at Eilers and Kreijek Gaming, an independent research firm that follows the industry. Chris Grove: I think that it's certainly possible that we could see the number of states where sports betting is available crest over 30 by the end of the year. Some of that increased interest in state legislatures does come from the budgetary pressures brought about by the global pandemic. But to be honest, much of that momentum was already existing in state capitals. Hari Sreenivasan: New Jersey, is currently the biggest market in the country with more than $6 billion in wagers in 2020. But Grove says this will change as the industry matures and more states legalize sports betting. Chris Grove: It is a temporary crown, unfortunately, for the good folks in the Garden State. Generally speaking, with some exceptions on the margins, the largest states from a sports betting revenue perspective are going to be the states with the largest populations. Hari Sreenivasan: Grove also says that the growth has come as media and sports leagues themselves have embraced gambling. Both ESPN and FS1 feature daily shows devoted to sports betting. Information on betting odds are now displayed on the ticker on networks like ESPN, and media companies and teams have official gambling partners, and feature betting content during games. NBA Halftime show: Right now the Nets are underdogs, getting six and a half points. Chris Grove: I think you're also going to see those partnerships continue to deepen and you are going to see increased integrations, whether it's some of the more subtle things, or more all-in integrations like like custom blocks of content that are gambling first and sports second. I don't think it's overstating it to use the word ubiquitous. I think you are going to see that kind of ubiquitous integration. Hari Sreenivasan: Grove believes it is in this area where we could see new regulation in the future. Chris Grove: I think it's going to be an interesting dialog between sports teams, leagues, betting operators, consumers and, of course, regulators who do have a history in the US of weighing in on what kind of advertising, in what context is appropriate. Hari Sreenivasan: Back in New Jersey, despite the availability of online betting, Andrew Kleiman says many people still prefer to place bets in person, which is the only way to use just cash. While there's a lot of focus on who will win the game, Kleiman says keep an eye on the pregame coin toss: it's one of the most popular bets not related to the game's outcome.. Andrew Kleiman: It's a 50-50 opportunity. And it's just one of those things that you sit there and you just hope for the best, but you also want your customers to win too. Hari Sreenivasan: And in case you're wondering, as of yesterday, the heavy favorite in terms of money wagered at least, was tails.

You can plug in your desired bet amount and the odds a sportsbook gives you, then the calculator will tell you what you’d win if the bet hit. Odds calculators are particularly useful if you’re trying to decide between a number of sportsbooks for a specific bet. Different sportsbooks offer different odds, so you can maximize your potential payout if you search for the best odds and use a calculator to help you decide your best path. We have a number of odds calculators on our site for various types of bets, including moneyline, parlay, and futures calculators. Moneyline Odds Calculator. Because moneyline bets are on a single team to win, it’s the easiest calculator to use. Here’s how: Type your desired bet amount (in USD) into the proper field. Type the odds as the sportsbook lists them. The calculator will autofill the rest of the fields and show you how much the bet would pay if you were to win. Parlay Odds Calculator. If you’re a fan of parlay bets (which combine multiple wagers into one), you can use a parlay-specific calculator. Here’s how: Plug in your desired bet amount in USD in the proper field. Enter the odds for each individual leg of the parlay into the moneyline fields. Note that they don’t have to be moneyline bets; just pull the odds from whichever bets you intend to use as part of the parlay. Click “calculate” for your combined parlay odds and potential payout. Check out some of our other odds calculators: How Sports Betting Odds Are Calculated. If you’re new to sports betting, chances are you’ve been confused by how odds work. They can be complex to understand for a newcomer, but once you understand the basics, you’ll be betting like a pro. The first thing to know is that odds are typically calculated based on how many people are betting on a certain outcome. So if the Kansas City Chiefs are favored by many bettors to win over the New York Giants, the Chief’s odds to win will increase as bettors place wagers on that outcome. Other factors can come into play, such as team record, past performance, injured players, etc., but bets placed are the biggest determining factor in most cases. How To Read Odds And Determine Payouts. Sportsbooks display odds as a positive and negative numbers, and those odds tell you how much you’ll win if your bet hits. Here’s a scenario to help you understand how they work. How Can I Bet On Sports In The US. Placing a bet is easy at legal sportsbooks. Have your personal information including your SSN ready and the rest will be straightforward. Onscreen prompts will guide you through the process. If you’re signing up on a mobile device, that’s it! If you’re on desktop, you may also have to download a geolocation plug-in. This is required to confirm that you are betting from a legal state. Deposit Funds. The nature of legal online sports betting in the US creates a unique landscape in each individual state. Every state can regulate sports betting with their own legislation, meaning some sports that are available for betting in one state may not be available in another. Professional Sports. Pro sports are fair game pretty much across the board in legal sports betting markets. You can bet on any of the most popular leagues without issue: NFL MLB NBA NHL PGA MLS NWLS WNBA NASCAR UFC. Plus many others. College Sports. NCAA sports are somewhat of a mixed bag. They’re usually available to bet on, but some states put specific restrictions on them. In Illinois and New Jersey, for example, you can only bet on college match-ups that don’t include a school from the state you’re betting in. So Illinois fans can’t place wagers on games including Northwestern or the University of Illinois, while New Jersey bettors can’t wager on Rutgers or Princeton match-ups. International Sports. Globally popular sports like soccer, rugby, and cricket are available for betting in most legal markets with few restrictions. Esports. Esports betting runs the gamut from completely legal to prohibited to left out of legislation completely. Before you place an esports bet, make sure you check that it’s legal in your state. Non-Sporting Events. Elections and awards shows are among the most popular non-sporting events on betting platforms. Not every state allows betting on them, though. It varies by state, so check your local laws or betting sites for more information. Legal Online Sportsbook Apps In The US: Common Questions. Not everywhere. In 2018, the Supreme Court struck down the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act. Rather than legalizing sports betting across the board, it put the issue in individual states’ hands. Many states have legalized online sports betting, and more are working on legislation to do so. While it’s not legal everywhere, sports betting is swiftly making its way to more US markets beyond the two dozen that already allow it. You can find sports betting odds by visiting the sportsbook website of your choice. They will usually display their odds without requiring you to log in or create an account. Online resources also exist that compare and contrast the odds at top sports betting platforms. Sports news sites, including CBS Sports and NBC Sports, will often list the lines as well. Using an online odds calculator or by calculating the odds manually. Gaming Today has several odds calculators to choose from. How to read sports betting odds depends on how the odds are displayed. Decimal, fractional, and American odds all require different math for calculation. However, each are relatively easy to understand. DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetRivers have the consistently best odds out of all the online sportsbooks in the US market. However, that isn’t always true. In many cases, other sportsbooks will have better odds. The most successful sports bettors compare and contrast different options before placing a bet for that very reason. Range of factors. Sports betting odds are calculated based on a variety of things including injuries and trades, current team form, the weather, and beyond. How players are betting also determines the odds, which is one of the reasons why you’ll see significantly different odds at one sportsbook versus another. An odds calculator helps sports bettors determine their betting strategy. The most basic is a moneyline odds calculator that tells you how much you’ll win based on your bet and the odds. However, different odds calculators have different purposes, such as comparing futures, identifying arbitrage, and more. You should use an odds calculator when you want to save time or for when the math is too complex to perform manually. It’s never a bad idea to use an odds calculator, and they can ensure that no mistakes are made in your calculations, eliminating all chances of human error. DraftKings Sportsbook. The sports betting website and app that consistently offers the best odds is DraftKings Sportsbook. It also offers a range of betting options, a deep sports selection, and impressive promotions. You can also seamlessly switch between the sportsbook, daily fantasy sports, and casino games (where legal). The DraftKings Sportsbook app is available for iOS and Android.

Leishman was off last week following a T-4 finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii. The 2020 champion did so while gaining 2.68 strokes per round putting with 1.58 Strokes Gained: Approach per round. Both of those aspects of his game were sharp in Hawaii, and he also gained 1.86 strokes per round from tee-to-green. The Australian has played 44 career rounds at Torrey Pines’ South Course with an average of 1.68 strokes gained on the field per round. He had four top-10 finishes in this event in 10 appearances before winning last year. Last year’s win came against a similar strength of field with many of the top odds favorites back again. Tiger Woods won the last US Open at Torrey Pines at just 1-under par. 2021 Farmers Insurance Open betting picks – Long shot. There have been few long-shot winners of this event in recent years. Other than a young Jon Rahm , Scott Stallings in 2014 was the last to rank outside of the top 100 in the Official World Golf Ranking at the time of their victory. For that reason, I’m only willing to go as far as Dahmen for a long-shot bet this week. He ranks 65th in the OWGR but 27th in the Golfweek rankings. He missed the cut at minus-1 last week, but he led the field with 1.94 SG: Off-the-Tee through his 36 holes. Dahmen has still never won on the PGA Tour, but he has performed well in big tournaments and on long courses, including a T-9 finish in this event in 2019. Golfweek: Follow @EstenMcLaren on Twitter. Super Bowl line holding steady at Las Vegas sportsbooks. The point spread for Sunday’s game between the Chiefs and Buccaneers might not move much this week, one bookmaker predicted. The final line for Super Bowl LV might already be here. The Kansas City Chiefs remain 3-point favorites over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for Sunday’s game in Tampa, Florida. The South Point is at Chiefs -3 at the standard -110 odds, and most other Las Vegas sportsbooks are at -3 (-120). BetMGM and Station Casinos have Chiefs -3½ (-105). Circa Sports is among the books at Chiefs -3 (-120). Sportsbook manager Chris Bennett said it was hard to see the line eventually sticking at -3½ (-110). “We’re not seeing the sharp action really either way on the 3,” he said. “I just don’t see how 3½ flat (-110) holds. It just seems unlikely to me. … I actually think we’ll close around -3 (-120). That would be my guess right now.” A few sportsbooks have briefly gone to Chiefs -3½ over the past week but quickly moved back to Chiefs -3 (-120). Circa is taking money on the Chiefs, but it’s not the kind of sharp money or large amounts that would force a line move, he said. Sharp bettors who are targeting the Buccaneers are using other options, he said. “The people that are betting the Bucs are betting the money line or they’re betting a Bucs guy to win MVP or some other derivative based on the Bucs winning the game,” Bennett said. The total is 56½ everywhere in Las Vegas except Circa, which is at 56. The total opened at 57½ at most sportsbooks.

The Kansas City Chiefs wil meet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55 from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on Feb. 7, 2021. The Chiefs opened as -3.5 betting favorites while the Buccaneers are 3.5 underdogs. After early wagers came in, most operators are holding Kansas City -3 (-120). If you were to wager on Kansas City -3, you would have to lay 5/6 odds (Bet $120 to win $100) instead of your normal 10/11 juice (Bet $110 to win $100). The return on Tampa Bay would be even-money (1/1) and a $100 wager would return $100. The total or over-under on Super Bowl 55 is hovering between 56 and 57 points. How to read NFL Las Vegas Odds. The point-spread was developed to provide a balance for both teams involved in a contest to entice bettors to potentially back the weaker team and receive points. The two squads in a game are listed with a title, either a favorite or an underdog. The favorite is usually the perceived better team in the game, as backing them means giving up several points. Ex. Bet $110 to win $100 (10% juice) Ex. Bet $100 to win $90.91 (10% juice) It's not uncommon to see other values posted other than -10. Examples seen on the NFL Vegas Odds pages could include -08 , -12 , -15 and -20 . The -10 price is the most common value in the industry while many books offer reduced 'juice odds' and that would fall into the -08 category. The lower-juice sportsbooks are normally found outside of the state Nevada. All of the above numbers are listed next to the teams, and before each matchup is a Rotation number. The NFL Las Vegas Odds are listed in order of rotation and those numbers are generated and produced by the sportsbooks. Sports Betting Explained: What’s A Prop Bet? With sports betting becoming more popular by the day, Super Bowl 55 is in line to be the event with the largest volume of wagering in history. It should be noted that sports betting is not legal in every state in the U.S. just yet, but with more and more states adding legal wagering to their docket, the level of interest is sky-high. To that end, we are continuing a series of explainers on sports betting, following up on a general introduction to the space that explains different kinds of wagers, how odds are calculated, and much more. The second installment is timely when considering the Super Bowl as the backdrop, and it centers on the wide world of prop betting. What is a prop bet, exactly? The most common wagers on a sporting event are covered in our general intro, and they are directly linked to the outcome/score of the game. Those wagers include point spreads, over/under totals, and money lines but, again, they are focused on the actual result of the contest in a big-picture sense. Prop bets (or proposition bets) are wagers that are not directly linked to the overall score or outcome. There are many ways to examine this space, but prop bets gained notoriety from the Super Bowl in many cases, with all eyes fixed on a single game and bookmakers looking for creative ways to entice the public into sinking more money into the action. Prop bets are still far less common than standard point spread bets or total bets, but they are gaining steam, especially in the world of offshore betting, and can be a lot of fun. Standard Game Props. At this point in 2021, game props are available well beyond the Super Bowl, but they can be quite simple and also a bit more complicated. One type of game prop would be an over/under listing on the longest pass play of the game (over/under 27.5 yards, for example). That means a handicapper could wager on either side of that number for the longest pass play, and the same applies for wagers like shortest touchdown, longest touchdown, total penalty yardage, and more. That encompasses a great deal of the game prop market, but there are others to consider. For example, a prominent Super Bowl bet is whether the game will go to overtime, with “yes” and “no” offered. These yes/no bets are very easy to track, simply because it is clear whether the event takes place or not. Finally, there are team vs. team wagers that fall under a similar umbrella. Which team will have more rushing yards? Which team will score first? Which team will score last? Which team will kick more field goals? All of these bets could be (or have been) available for any game, with the bettor given the option to choose a side. Player Props. This may be oversimplified, but player props basically encompass any wager dictated by the performances of individual players. For example, a popular Super Bowl bet is which player will score the first touchdown, with sportsbooks offering sometimes long odds on various players, with only one able to cash a winning ticket. This could also be applied to basketball with which player scores the first (or last) point of the game, or to baseball with the first/last/most home runs of the night. Those are broad bets that could pay lofty odds if things break just a certain way, but there are also more common over/under bets. The Super Bowl is, again, a good example here, with the ability to wager on the over/under for passing yards from Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes. Bookmakers build lines for yards (passing, receiving, rushing, etc.), receptions, completions, carries, touchdowns and much more in the football space, with points, rebounds and assists in basketball and hits, strikeouts, and home runs in baseball. This is a more efficient market in recent years, simply because many smart people are now finding value, but these can also be entertaining and a way to track a “game within the game.” Exotics. This is the area where a gigantic game, i.e. the Super Bowl, really shines. One of the more famous examples is a large market on just how long the national anthem will be, from start to finish, before kick-off. Another could be tied to the coin toss, with people able to wager on “heads” versus “tails.” It can even be as weird as tracking what words the announcers say, or what color someone’s shoes are, or whether the Gatorade poured over the winning coach’s head is green, orange, blue, or a different color. Yes, this is hilarious and often weird. Yes, it can also be delightful, but it certainly trends more to the “entertainment purposes only” genre of sports handicapping.
What Is A Point Spread? Betting Odds And Strategy. Point spread betting is the most popular form of sports betting. The vast majority of sports wagers use a point spread thanks to the popularity of football and basketball. Even though this type of betting is so popular, it may take awhile to understand. The point spread is sometimes known as an equalizer for sportsbook operators. All teams aren’t created equally, so sportsbooks can create a point spread for a game so that each team playing has an almost even chance of winning the game. In a way, the point spread will even the field for both teams . The point spread gives a reason for bettors to risk money on both teams. The better team playing in the game is considered favorite. They have to win by the point spread offered by the sportsbook. The favorite in a game is listed as being minus (-) the point spread. Let’s use the upcoming Super Bowl between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an example. Using this example, the Chiefs opened as 3-point favorites over the Buccaneers (currently Chiefs ). The Chiefs need to win by 4 or more points to cover the spread. Likewise, the Buccaneers opened as 3-point underdogs. That means the Buccaneers would need to win the game outright or not lose the contest by 4 points or more. If the line is Chiefs -3 and they win by exactly 3 points, the betting result is a “push” and bettors for both sides would get their wagers refunded. Point spread betting odds. Point spreads are usually set with -110 odds , but pricing often fluctuates at online sportsbooks. This is the sportsbook operators’ house edge . The odds guarantee the sportsbook operator will see a little money over time. When the odds are set at -110, the bettor must wager $110 to win $100 (or $11 to win $10). The odds on a point spread are most commonly known as the vigorish or “vig” for the sportsbook. You might hear this small profit margin for the sportsbook called the “juice” by some sports bettors. Point spread FAQs. What does ‘pick em’ or ‘pick’ mean in NFL betting? A “pick em” (sometimes seen as “pick”) is when the teams have a point spread of zero, meaning neither team is favored. In this instance, you’re essentially picking moneyline and your bet will be determined on the winner alone. A spread of minus-seven (-7) means that a is favored to win the game by a touchdown (technically, a touchdown and the extra point). A team favored by -7 must win the game by eight or more points to win the bet. If the team wins by seven, the result is a “push” and the bet is refunded. A -3 spread means that the favorite must win by more than a field goal to win the wager. A three-point win would result in a push and the sportsbook would refund the wager. Why are point spreads in the NFL so much lower than in college? Point spread and odds movement. Sportsbook operators often aim to have equal money on both sides of a point spread. When the money is exactly split the sportsbook operator will see the exact vigorish as their profit margin. If all things are equal over time this will maximize how much money the sportsbook operator can make. In an effort to have equal money on both sides of a wager, the sportsbook operator will move the point spread to attract money on the side that customers aren’t betting on. The odds for a point spread might change before the actual point spread. There are certain point spread numbers, like 3 and 7 in football, the sportsbook operators would like to avoid moving away from since the final score margin falls on these two numbers most often. For example, if a lot more money is wagered on the New England Patriots -3, the vig may shift from -112 to -115 and -120 before the line moves to -3.5. Run and puck lines. Football and basketball games are mostly bet using a point spread. The less popular major sports, baseball and hockey, are mostly bet using a moneyline . In an effort to make baseball and hockey more appealing to point spread bettors, the sportsbook operators offer run and puck lines, respectively. These alternative lines give point spread bettors a chance to wager on other sports using a more familiar method of betting. Since points (runs and goals) aren’t as easy to come by in baseball and hockey, the odds with the lines may have a wider spread than a football or basketball game. Bet with your head, not over it. Sections. Advertisement. Sports Betting 101: What is a point spread in sports betting? Share this article. Understanding the different types of betting options is crucial when you’re getting a start as a first-time sports bettor. The Point Spread: Betting the spread. For those new to sports betting, the point spread is the simplest, most straightforward approach to placing wagers. Sports books set a predetermined margin of points on a game and a team must win – or not lose – by that set number. That’s why you’ll often hear people say the team won, but they “didn’t cover the spread” so their bet still came up short. It’s not a matter of a team winning or losing like in a moneyline bet. For a favorite: The favorite must win by more than the point spread. For an underdog: The underdog must outright win OR lose by fewer than the point spread. Sports books aren’t in the business of predicting who will win or lose games. Their goal is setting a pre-game point spread with the intention to generate an equal amount of betting action/volume on both sides of the ledger – as much total money being bet on the favorite as on the underdog. Related. Betting 101: What is over under sports betting? Betting 101: What is a money line bet in sports betting? The vast majority of point spread wagers are made on football and basketball because of the proliferation of points that are scored in comparison to sports like baseball and hockey, where 1-0 or 2-1 games aren’t that out of the question or out of the norm. There’s one every night. For example, the New England Patriots are playing the New York Jets and New England is a 9½-point favorite. Bettors typically have to spend $110 or so to win $100 with sports books, known as “the house edge/advantage.” With a point spread bet, simply having a team win the game isn’t the key. The critical factor to betting a point spread is how much a team wins or loses by. If a wager is placed on New England – “laying” the 9½ points – the Patriots need to win the game by 10 or more points for that bet to pay off. If New England wins 28-20, those betting on the Jets plus 9½ points (points added to their final total) win the bet. The same general rules apply for basketball and are quite easy to follow because of the inherent simplicity of the bet. When it comes to betting sports like baseball and hockey, the standard bets are made on the “money line” – an established number for both teams to win the game outright. What makes point spread bets attractive are the fluid nature of each game – it’s a reality show that, when done right, is inexplicable. Games change on one play and momentum is a thing. But, when it comes to point spread betting, you know where you stand at every moment. For those just starting out, the simplest form of gambling is betting the spread because it’s the easiest to explain and understand, which explains why it is the most popular form of sports wagering.
Point Spreads in Sports Betting. Understanding Point Spreads in Football and Basketball. Sports betting would be easy — or maybe just easier — if all that was required was to correctly pick the winning team. Gambling institutions, sportsbooks and bookies fall back on point spreads to make the process a little more difficult and to create the ultimate wagering challenge. You'll need a solid understanding of the point spread system if you hope to have a profitable season. How the Point Spread Works. The point spread is a handicap placed on one team for betting purposes only, it has no place in the game itself. It's designed to give both teams an equal chance at winning in the context of wagers. Think of it this way: If last season's Super Bowl champion was playing a basement-dweller team that hadn't won a game all year, that's a shoo-in bet. Of course, you're going to take the Super Bowl champs, and in all likelihood, you're going to win. What's the fun in that? Even your bragging rights would be next to nil. But what if the basement-dweller team was spotted 24 points? That's the concept behind the point spread. When two teams meet on the football field or a basketball court, one team is typically better than the other. If all bettors had to do was to pick the winning team, everybody would simply wager on the best team and collect their money. Gambling institutions, sportsbooks, and bookies would soon go broke. A Real Life Example. The Carolina Panthers played the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50. Few people doubted that Carolina was the better of the two teams, so the majority of bettors would have taken the Panthers if they had only been required to pick the winning team. If Carolina were to win 24-17, Panthers' bettors would win their wager. If the Panthers were to win 21-17, Carolina bettors would lose because they did not win by more than those 6 points. If you bet the underdog, you'd win your bet if the Broncos won the game outright or if they lost by 5 points or less. Because the Broncos are the underdogs, we would add 6 points to their final score for betting purposes. If the Panthers were to win the game by exactly 6 points, 23-17, it would be a tie and all wagers would be refunded to bettors. Money Lines Vs. Point Spreads. You'll also usually be given the option to wager on the game with the money line in football and basketball. In this case, all you have to do is pick the winner of the contest, but there's one drawback. If you bet on the team that's expected to win, you can find yourself risking much more money than you stand to win. Each team is assigned odds, much like in a horse race where a 2-1 favorite will pay out much less than a 15-1 longshot. This method also evens the playing field for bookies, sportsbooks and other gambling institutions. Deciding when to bet using the point spread and when to use the money line is just one of the decisions bettors have to make on an ongoing basis if they want to play the game. There are no rules etched in stone.
