The 9 Best Offshore Gambling Sites of 2021. You should avoid offshore gambling sites if you can bet with a legal United States gambling site instead. Offshore bingo, casino, poker, and sports betting sites are legal in their country of origin, but the United States has a different opinion. That said, the probability that you’ll face any kind of legal issues when betting at offshore gambling sites is minimal. You should be more worried about having trouble depositing and withdrawing money from these offshore sportsbooks. Below, I offer some recommendations about which offshore sportsbooks might best suit your needs. But I remind you to take everything you read online with a grain of salt, including this. My List of the 9 Best Offshore Gambling Sites for 2021. Here’s my list of the 9 best offshore gambling sites for 2021, in alphabetical order. I don’t recommend any one site over any other, necessarily. Further on in this post, I’ll share some thoughts on which sites are better or worse than others for specific types of gamblers. Betonline Bookmaker Bovada GT Bets Intertops Mybookie BetDSI YouWager. I provide detailed reviews below, but first, I should discuss the legalities involved with gambling at offshore sportsbooks. Categorizing Online Sportsbooks and Offshore Gambling Sites. You could categorize online sportsbooks in multiple ways, but the broadest categories I can think of are 2: Legal, regulated online sportsbooks Offshare, unregulated online sportsbooks. If you live in a state where you can bet on sports online, you should always choose one of the many reputable sportsbooks operating in the United States. In many states, though, if you want to bet on sports online, you must do business with a neighborhood bookie or an online gambling site. I recommend trying a local bookie if you can, but those are guys are operating on the outskirts of the law, too. If you’re determined to gamble at an offshore sportsbook, stick with the ones recommended in this post. You’re unlikely to face legal trouble betting at an offshore book, but it’s not impossible. I’m not a lawyer. I do have dozens of friends who have bet on various sporting events at different offshore sites, and many of them have been happy with the experience. 5Dimes. If you’re looking for the best odds and the lowest vig, 5Dimes is your best option. They also offer multiple deposit options, the best of which might be bitcoin. You can also use a credit card — if you can get the charge to go through. Their minimum deposit is $50, and their maximum deposit is $500. You can use any of these deposit methods, too: Bank wires Cashier checks Money orders. If you’re using bitcoin, you have more flexible minimums and maximums. You can deposit as little as $25 or as much as $10k. The best way to withdraw your money is via bitcoin. Other withdrawal methods at 5Dimes involve fees. Betonline. If you’re looking for the widest variety of available bets, try Betonline. They offer bets on more sports than anyone else in the business. They also have some of the biggest deposit maximums on the internet. You can deposit up to $100k with multiple different cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin and ethereum. Their signup bonus offers are better than you’ll find at many of these sites. Bookmaker. If you’re looking for the highest betting limits online, try Bookmaker. You can bet up to $50k on the internet. You can also bet up to $100k if you call in your bet over the phone. Bookmaker has flexible minimum and maximum deposits that vary based on which deposit method you’re using. With many methods, the minimum deposit is only $10. You can deposit up to $500,000 with bitcoin, too. Bovada. If you’re a beginner to sports betting online, try Bovada. They have the friendliest user interface and the most deposit/withdrawal options. Be sure to consider betting with bitcoin at Bovada, because they’re very friendly to bitcoin betters. They also offer casino games and poker. If you’re looking for that kind of action, you can find it at other online bookmakers, but Bovada offers a much more robust set of games. They also might have the best overall reputation of any of the sites listed here. GT Bets. If you’re looking for the best turnaround times for withdrawals, try GT Bets. They’re well-known for their fast turnaround time on customer withdrawals. This is one of the newest sites on the list, having launched in 2011. They do have low betting limits, though, so if you’re a high roller, you might want to pass on GT Bets and consider one of the other properties listed here. Intertops. If you’re looking for the sportsbook with the best reputation for honoring withdrawal requests and not having outstanding customer service issues, try Intertops. Intertops is one of the oldest offshore gambling sites in the business. They were founded in 1998. They also offer some of the best casino and poker games of any of the sites on the list. Bovada is probably the only comparable site in that respect. Mybookie. If you’re interested mostly in live betting and/or prop bets, try Mybookie. They’re one of the newer books listed here, and they have a relatively high rollover requirement on their deposit bonuses. MyBookie is probably better for low rollers because the biggest deposit you can make there is $25,000 — but that’s only for Bitcoin users. If you’re using MasterCard or Visa, your maximum deposit is $1000. BetDSI. If you’re looking for a site that will accept a large deposit from a new gambler, try BetDSI. If you use Bitcoin, you can deposit between $25k and $50k. Check with customer service there for details. The odds aren’t as good at BetDSI as at some other sites, and here’s something else you might have to deal with there: If you’re winning consistently, you might become ineligible for their ongoing bonuses and promotions. YouWager. If you’re looking for great perks and promotions, try YouWager. They’re one of the best offshore betting sites for bonuses and ongoing rewards. They also have a great mobile interface. The company is based in San Jose, Costa Rica. They cater to a mostly US audience. How to Choose an Offshore Gambling Site. You should put some effort into choosing an offshore gambling site. Read some reviews, check out some player forums, and think about what your goals are at the site you’re thinking about signing up with. Don’t forget that you’re looking for a trustworthy site. In this industry, that’s relative, but some sites are better than others. Every betting site on this list is different from every other betting site on this list. They almost all offer different bonuses and set different odds for various bets. They also usually have differences in terms of which banking methods are available. Some of them just offer sports bets, while others also offer casino games and/or poker. Things to Consider When Making Your Decision. Here are some things to look at and think about when deciding where to sign up: Which sports can you bet on? What kind of customer service do they have? How can you deposit and withdraw funds? What are other bettors on the internet saying about them? What kinds of bonuses do they offer? In some respects, offshore gambling sites are often similar, but they have major differences as they relate to all of the above factors. You should make sure you understand which of those criteria are important to you and decide accordingly. What Are Your Goals? Do you just want to bet on football games each week? How about getting the best odds on multiple sporting events? Is that important to you? Do you want to make exotic bets and parlays? These are just a few of the questions to ask yourself before making your decision. If you go into the decision-making process blindly, without any thought to what you’re hoping to experience, you’re going to make a mistake when choosing from the offshore gambling sites above. Finally, have an idea of what your risk tolerance is like. Finally – What You Really Need to Understand about Offshore Gambling Sites. I want to suggest again that if you can play at a licensed online sportsbook headquartered in the United States, never sign up for any of the offshore gambling sites available to you. Use caution with any offshore sportsbooks you do business with, too. Make sure that you’re not betting money you can’t afford to lose. And spend a little time investigating the reputations of the sites you’re considering before making that first deposit.

After you have found the book that suits your betting needs, you are going to need to sign up for an account. This is a pretty simple process; they will ask you for your name, address, to create a password, etc. etc. They ask you for the pertinent information, if you have ever made a purchase online it is the same type of deal. If you are not all that Internet savvy, most books will allow you to call their 800 number and setup your account over the phone. But again the online signup process is pretty straightforward. After you have registered for an account, you are going to need to deposit funds into the offshore betting account. Different books offer different deposit options so you will need to see exactly which methods your book does offer. Each book is different but normally clicking on the cashier or the deposit link will inform you what methods they accept. The most common ways to deposit are bank wire, western union, visa, mastercard, and money transfer through online companies like neteller, and moneybookers. Bank wire is pretty self explanatory; you transfer funds through your bank account to the sportsbook to start betting. For western union, you will need to contact the sportsbook and request the receiver's information. You will need their name, city, country, and zip/postal code. They will remind you to add your account number when you send the funds to speed up the deposit process. Visa and Mastercard deposits are a little trickier. The first problem with credit card deposits is some banks have stopped allowing deposits to offshore betting sites. It all depends on the website and your issuing bank if a credit card deposit will work. Quite frankly credit card deposits are becoming a thing of the past since they always don't go through and the maximum deposit is usually pretty low. As much as credit card deposits are a thing of the past, money transfer through neteller, and moneybookers are the ideal way to deposit these days. Much like paypal, (who no longer accepts online gambling transfers) these 3 companies allow you to send and receive money to online merchants instantly. You transfer funds to your neteller, moneybookers, or firepay accounts via your bank account and than use that money to deposit at the sportsbook and start betting offshore. Signing up for either one of the accounts is a simple task and takes just minutes to do so. You can click on any of the links above to visit each website and see which one you are most comfortable with. If you don't know which one to choose our personal preference is Neteller. We have been using Neteller for a few years now and in our opinion is the easiest and fastest way to send funds to and from a sportsbook. Betting Offshore. Okay so now you have selected a sportsbook, signed up for an account, and have money available to start betting, what's next? Well clearly it is time to start placing your wagers. Each sportsbook has an easy to use wagering menu. It should be clean and concise so placing bets can be made swiftly and with ease. Most books will have it setup where you need to enter your password or initials to verify your wager. This avoids any misplaced bets or mistakes you may have made. After you have verified your wager you will be able to hit the pending wagers or open bets link and see all open wagers you currently have. Once the game you bet on is over, you will be able to login and see your new account balance. The bigger books are pretty good at grading wagers within a half hour after the sporting event has ended. Some are quicker, some slower, just all depends on the time of year, the sport the wager was placed on, how busy they are, and how many graders the book has working. It is recommended to record all your offshore betting transactions in a log to track performance, betting trends, and any information you may need to look back on someday. This is not essential but highly suggested by Maddux Sports. Okay so you have picked a few more winners than losers and would like to collect some of your winnings. It is time to request a payout. Most of the offshore betting parlors offer 1 free payout a month. Again some books may give free payouts for only certain withdrawal methods while others may offer free payouts via all methods. This all depends on the sportsbook and you should be able to view all their fees via the website. Please note if you deposited via credit card, it is mandatory for the sportsbook to credit the full amount of the deposit back onto your card before any other method can be used to receive money. Just another reason why credit card depositing, should be a last resort in terms of depositing. Stick with neteller or a cashiers check as again these are the easiest and quickest ways of getting your funds. Sports Betting Information. Other Betting Pages. Offshore Betting 2021. Offshore betting is quite popular in the US as it is no secret that people in the States love wagering on sports. However, due to the peculiar situation in the country (which is finally starting to change for the better), a majority of those wanting to bet on sports couldn’t do so on legal and licensed sites. Thus, they’d turn to offshore betting sites as their only gambling alternative, despite the fact these sites are essentially illegal. There are no legal offshore betting sites in the US It is impossible to set up an offshore betting legal operation at this time Betting with offshore sites can lead to a variety of issues Many states now offer legal and licensed sportsbook for US bettors. Why are offshore betting sites illegal in the States? Dangers of gambling with offshore betting firms What do offshore betting websites offer to US players? Is it really worth it? Bet it safe: Play with legal US sportsbooks Conclusion. Why are offshore betting sites illegal in the States? Americans love betting on sports, be it with legal sportsbooks or illegal bookies taking bets via phones or word of mouth. So, in a way, it is quite strange that betting sports is, in fact, illegal in a majority of US states. In fact, up until a couple of years ago, any form of sports betting was legal just in a couple of states. The biggest issues with offshore betting websites resides with the infamous Wire Act and PASPA . The first is an old bill that prohibited accepting bets using the telephone. The second has to do with the protection of sports and making sure their integrity is kept. Because of these documents, until very recently, it was impossible for any legal entity in the US to set up a betting site. The recent decision by the Supreme Court which overturned PASPA has now created a fresh situation where states have finally been given a green light to regulate betting within their own jurisdictions. Going back to offshore betting operators, these are sites that don’t have any kind of legal authorization from any entity in the States to accept sports bets. They have continued to operate despite all these laws prohibiting betting, providing US bettors and gamblers with betting odds, lines, and casino games. Even today, although PASPA has been overturned, there is no sportsbook that can operate legally on the federal level as there is no federal law regulating this area. So, if you’ve been wondering is offshore betting illegal, that’s your answer. Offshore betting and casino operators and sportsbooks have no legal grounds to offer their betting services in the US. They operate outside of the scope of the laws and some of them have been successful flying under the radar for a while now, which is what creates confusion with some bettors. More: Offshore Review. Dangers of gambling with offshore betting firms. While sports betting may be illegal on paper, bettors from the States still decide to take up on of these offshore sites and place sports bets with them. There are a couple of main reasons that lead players to believe that gambling with these offshore betting firms might be safe: Some of these operators do treat their players well Bettors have never been targeted by the government Offshore sportsbooks offer odds and bets for NHL, NFL, NBA, and other popular leagues & competitions. So, on the surface and to someone not very familiar with the topic of betting online, it may feel like there is no big danger in creating an account, depositing some money, and placing some bets on a few games here and there. However, when looking at a bigger picture , there are quite a few reasons to steer clear of these sites and stick to legal and licensed sportsbook sites instead. First and foremost, the fact that these sites aren’t really licensed by any relevant or credible authority means that there could be all sorts of shady things happening behind the scenes. Unlike licensed US sportsbooks that are handled by the likes of New Jersey Division of Gambling or other gambling divisions, these offshore sites don’t undergo any regular checks or controls. Furthermore, any illegal bet or gambling operator that accepts US bettors is on very shaky ground. These operators, new and well-established ones alike, could easily go out of business at any time in face of a serious operation from the US government. We’ve witnessed these things in the past and there is no reason to think something like this won’t happen again. In a case of such an event, many players would be left with their gambling bankrolls in a limbo, only being able to hope their money would be repaid at some point. In this context, it is also important to mention UIGEA, which addresses the flow of money from and to gambling operators of any sorts, be it poker, casino, or betting sports. Namely, UIGEA strictly prohibits all financial institutions in the US from willingly and knowingly processing such transactions. For this reason, offshore betting sites often try to mask the source of money . However, should the fact be discovered, you’re running a risk of your bank account being closed, which is very inconvenient, to say the least. Banks aren’t thrilled to participate in these illegal betting and gambling activities and they most certainly don’t want to be on the line for hefty fines for the behavior of their clients. So, this is another reason to be very careful about gambling with offshore betting sites. Disclaimer: Don't play here. What do offshore betting websites offer to US players? Despite all of these dangers and risks, many bettors still get involved with these betting companies. They are often lured in by promises of a big betting online bonus, great betting lines and odds, and very good coverage of popular competitions they can bet on like NFL, NBA, NHL , and other various popular betting options and markets within these options. Some review sites give very good marks for some of the best offshore betting sites as well, which is another reason why bettors may feel safe depositing and playing here. With a good bonus offer, a variety of NFL, NBA, and other betting possibilities, and fairly fast withdrawals (for US standards, at least), these sites may feel like a decent option for those looking to place a bet or two on their favorite sports. Some gambling operators catering to the US have also turned to bitcoin as a deposit and withdrawal alternative and many players from the States see this as an excellent solution for all of the money transfer-related problems. Bypassing banks and allowing quick withdrawals and instant deposits, bitcoin does seem like a very good alternative for those keen on gambling with offshore sites. Is it really worth it? Good offshore betting odds and convenient offshore betting apps certainly have its appeal, especially with the more passionate fans of sports betting. If a sportsbook offers a good package overall , with regards to a bonus, betting selection, and mobile solution, many players are willing to look the other side to the fact they aren’t exactly licensed to legally provide their services in the US. In the long run, though, getting involved with these offshore betting sites isn’t really worth the trouble . While there are some gamblers who play and win and do get their money, there are many more stories about bettors who were refused the payout or had to go through a variety of complications to get their money. Going through all this just to bet on a site that might go under at any point doesn’t really make much sense at all. Since you already have to deal with offshore betting lines that may be decent but are still in favor of the sportsbook, the added risk of losing your money in one clean swoop due to unforeseen circumstances and the sportsbook going under makes this proposition not very profitable at all. While there are some options in the cards that could make offshore sports betting legal at some point in the future, this is certainly not going to happen in the near future. The first thing that needs to happen is a gambling law on the federal level , then the issue of offshore betting companies needs to be addressed, and only then, maybe, some of them will be given the green light to start offering their casino, sports betting, and poker services in the US. Bet it safe: Play with legal US sportsbooks. With the recent legal movements, there is a growing number of states in the US that have recognized benefits of sports betting. Thanks to these changes, there are more and legal and licensed sportsbook operations sprouting all over the country. You can find more information about these in our comparison section sports betting where you can also easily find sportsbooks according to your particular state. So, stay away from illegal and unsafe offshore operators and bet with licensed and safe sites instead!
Ohio Sports Betting Update: Where Things Stand Entering 2021. Zach Bolinger/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images. Pictured: The Ohio State Buckeyes mascot. Ohio, which seemed on the cusp of legal sports betting just a few months ago, won’t approve a wagering bill this year. After five sports betting hearings, including several in recent weeks, an Ohio state Senate committee didn’t take up a legalization bill last week, effectively ending hopes it would pass this year. The full legislature concluded its 2021 session this week. After a separate bill easily passed the state House of Representatives this summer, it appeared it would be a matter of when, not if, Ohio would approve legal wagering. Instead, the Senate and House could not finalize an agreement that merged their two proposals before the end of a chaotic 2020 legislative session, which saw several lawmakers contract COVID-19 and House Speaker Larry Householder arrested on federal racketeering charges. Backers in the legislature will start up the 2021 session still hopeful they can pass the long-discussed sports betting legislation, but they must do so with many of the same challenges that sidelined the proposal in 2020 and without three of its leading supporters in office. Ohio Sports Betting Background. A large population, a growing casino gaming industry and some of the nation’s most well-known professional and college sports teams made Ohio a sought-after target for legal sports betting since the Supreme Court struck down the federal wagering ban in May 2018. Despite bipartisan, bicameral support, legislation floundered before a House bill that would allow the state’s commercial casinos and hybrid casino-horse track “racinos” to offer retail and online sports bets passed the House easily in May, giving the Senate nearly half a year to either pass their own bill on to the House or reach a compromise on the other legislation. Over the ensuing six months, the Senate’s General Government committee heard largely positive testimony from the nation’s leading gaming stakeholders, including DraftKings, FanDuel, Penn National (Barstool Sports), Boyd Gaming, MGM and Jack Entertainment, all of which could have access to the Ohio sports betting market through casino partnerships. Meanwhile, leadership in the Republican-controlled legislature, as well as GOP Gov. Mike DeWine, all publicly supported legal wagering. Still, the bill stalled. Lawmakers in the Senate and House differed between oversight by the state gaming commission and lottery, among other differences, but the bigger factor appeared to be legislative momentum (or lack thereof). With the year-round session truncated by the pandemic — and altered by a change in House leadership following Householder’s arrest — sports betting fell to the wayside amid hundreds of other bills considered in 2020. Backers fought until the last few weeks of the session, introducing a substitute amendment to ostensibly appease the casino operators that permitted only one online sportsbook license apiece earlier this month. Despite universal support for the amended proposal in the Senate committee, it still never took up the bill for a vote to advance it before the full Senate floor, effectively killing it for 2020. Possible Next Moves in 2021. Ohio will again be a leading sports betting legalization contender in 2021 as supporters hope last year’s progress can finally help push a bill to fruition. Again, that process may not come easily. Neither of the 2020 Senate bill’s sponsors will return after Sen. Sean O’Brien lost his 2020 re-election bid and Sen. John Eklund was unable to run again due to term limits. House bill sponsor Dave Greenspan also lost his re-election bid, leaving only Rep. Brigid Kelly among this year’s sports betting sponsors returning in 2021. Kelly, and/or a new group of sponsors, will have to start the legislative process over again when the 2021 session begins Jan. 4. The framework laid out by the failed 2020 bills is a good start, but the political obstacles that have stalled passage will likely remain. Meanwhile a new group of lawmakers will have to consider sports betting among a myriad of issues, most notably the state’s continued legislative and fiscal response to the pandemic. Proponents argue retail sportsbooks at state casinos and, more importantly, legal mobile betting options statewide could help ameliorate the state’s daunting $2 billion budget shortfall. Backers also note that by as early as next month, four of Ohio’s five bordering states (Michigan, Indiana, West Virginia and Pennsylvania) could have legal statewide mobile betting, all of which cater to Ohioans looking to cross state lines to place a bet. However, the few million dollars Ohio could plausibly generate in monthly tax revenues would, in a best-case scenario, be a small piece of the state’s budget puzzle. The more consequential decisions facing Buckeye State lawmakers will define the 2021 session, and it’s possible a comparatively minor proposal could, once again, fall short in the legislature. Despite these obstacles, Ohio will be among the most closely monitored of the dozen or so states seriously considering sports betting next year. Backers are still hopeful the early 2020 momentum in the statehouse could help, finally, legalize sports betting in 2021.
Recapping Busy Start for 2021 Sports Betting Legislation. Lev Radin/Pacific Press/LightRocket via Getty Images. Pictured: Gov. Andrew Cuomo. A few weeks into 2021, lawmakers in more than a dozen states have already introduced sports betting legislation or have announced plans to do so. Here’s a state-by-state recap of some of the most important such bills filed during a frantic start to the 2021 legislative session: Georgia. A bipartisan group of lawmakers in the state House of Representatives introduced a mobile sports betting bill last week that would allow at least six individually branded online licenses under the purview of the state lottery. Status: The bill has not been assigned yet to a committee but it is being championed by Rep. Ron Stephens, who chairs the House Economic Development & Tourism Committee. That means it should at least get a serious look. Look Ahead: Georgia came surprisingly close to passing legal sports betting last year, backed by Republican fiscal conservatives and the state’s professional sports organizations. However, any gaming bill still faces opposition from religious and social conservative organizations and lawmakers. The back-and-forth between these factions of the GOP could determine sports betting’s 2021 hopes. Connecticut. After years discussing legal sports betting, Connecticut finally seems on the verge of legal wagering legislation passing into law. Status: A bipartisan, bicameral bill with 17 sponsors — and the backing of Gov. Ned Lamont — was filed last week and now awaits further action in the Joint Committee on Public Safety and Security. Look Ahead: The bill offers few details beyond approving the state’s two gaming tribes to open retail and online sportsbooks, as well as online casinos (the state lottery would also be able to expand its offerings). Significant work is required before this bill could pass but the fact so many lawmakers are on board, as well as the tribes, gives online sports betting and casino gaming a great chance to pass, even if it looks like there may be limited wagering options. Missouri. Lawmakers have already introduced six sports betting bills, meaning the Show Me State will once again consider legal wagering, even though significant logistical and political hurdles remain. Status: Bills have been introduced in both the House and Senate but only one has been assigned to a committee. Look Ahead: Missouri lawmakers must weigh sports betting against an ongoing legislative fight over video lottery terminals, which would have a far larger financial consequence than even online sportsbooks. Lawmakers must consider the casino industry interests while also determining if the state should regulate thousands of unlicensed “grey” gaming machines that are already in existence, legalizing new machines or banning them outright. They also will have to do so remotely, at least for this week; the 2021 legislative session has been suspended due to a COVID-19 outbreak. Kentucky. Rep. Adam Koenig is once again spearheading mobile sports betting legislation, this time with 16 co-sponsors. But after a similar 2020 bill faltered following a promising start, this year’s legislative session leaves little wiggle room for what appears a long-shot effort. Status: This year’s bill hasn’t been taken up by a committee yet but assuming it advances as its counterpart did in 2020, the real question remains if it will get a vote before the full House floor. Look Ahead: Kentucky gaming bills always face tough odds in a state with strong anti-gambling sentiment but this year, lawmakers are more focused on restoring historic horse racing terminals — and, more so, a major budget crunch execrated by the COVID-19 pandemic. With an already truncated odd-numbered legislative session to begin with, sports betting may struggle to gain much traction in Frankfort. New York. Assemblymember J. Gary Pretlow and Sen. Joseph Addabbo have introduced identical bills in their respective chambers that would allow up to 14 online mobile operators as well as betting kiosks at professional sports stadiums and off-track betting venues. Status : Both bills could see votes in their respective gaming committees as early as this week, but that vote isn’t as important as a budget proposal expected from Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the coming days. Look Ahead: Cuomo surprised the gaming world earlier this month when he came out in support of legal online wagering but just as quickly angered stakeholders when he said he wanted only one operator. A press statement released last week indicated the governor may support a multi-operator model, but it will have to come with the backing of lawmakers already looking to advance a proposal of their own. The fate of New York online betting depends on finding an agreement on either a multiple operator or single operator model. Cuomo’s draft budget could go a long way toward that solution. South Dakota. After voters backed a 2020 ballot measure to legalize sports betting last fall, lawmakers introduced follow-up legislation in January that would lay out key regulatory and taxation details for retail sportsbooks in the historic gaming town of Deadwood, as well as Native American casinos. Status: The bill in South Dakota has been assigned to the Senate State Affairs Committee and could be discussed as early as this month. Look Ahead: Passing a retail sports betting bill seems like a safe bet in 2021. Online sports betting is the bigger question. Though gaming is only allowed in Deadwood, some mobile betting backers believe online wagering could be permitted statewide if the computer servers are physically within Deadwood limits. Though it would mean far larger revenue potential, it’s a logistically, politically and possibly legally more difficult endeavor, and the initial bill’s lack of mobile betting authorization indicates it may not even be considered in this year’s session. Massachusetts. Lawmakers discussed a handful of sports betting bills in 2020, including one sponsored by Gov. Charlie Baker, but elected officials couldn’t reach consensus despite bipartisan support. The General Court is set to take up wagering bills again in 2021, but some of the logistical hurdles remain. Status: Rep. Bradford Hill introduced a trio of mobile sports wagering bills last week, and more are set to follow in the Senate (and possibly the House). With the state’s year-long session just beginning, additional legislation to follow and more pressing budget concerns to consider, it could be a while before these specific proposals see much momentum. Look Ahead: Massachusetts, which has increasingly embraced gaming in recent years as competition for gambling dollars grows in other New England states, has frustrated the sports betting industry with its failure to advance legal wagering despite the latent political support. With statewide, legal wagering already in Rhode Island and New Hampshire (and likely in Connecticut) there’s more motivation than ever to pass a bill. Politicians still must work out operator access, college betting legality and a host of other issues they’ve struggled to reach consensus on in recent years. Other States. Several more are poised to introduce sports betting legislation in the coming weeks, while others with legal wagering already are working on growing their betting options. Legislation Pending: Maryland is all but guaranteed to take up fleshed-out legislation later this year after voters overwhelmingly backed a 2020 referendum that legalized sports betting. Texas, Minnesota and Arizona are among the next wave of states that could also see legal sports betting bills in 2021. Expanded Options: Officials in Oregon, Washington and Virginia have filed bills that would increase the number of legal sportsbooks in their respective states. Additional sports betting bills could face political obstacles, but it’s nevertheless a sign of political interest for expanded markets.

In this article, we are going to take a look at the types of free sports betting there are. We will also look at the places you can bet on sports for free. Finally, we’ll talk about the purpose of free sports betting and how to know you are ready to take the jump into real money sports betting. Let’s jump right into the types of free sports betting that are available. Types of Free Sports Betting. There are three main types of free sports betting that we will cover. At a Sportsbook for Real Money - this type of free sports bet happens at an online sportsbook. Some offer “Free bets” in exchange for different things. This is typically a promotional offer that the sportsbook is offering. For example, some sites offer you a free $25 bet for trying out their mobile platform. Or some other sportsbooks may give you a free balance just to give it a try. This would be a nice no-deposit free sports betting bonus. But in the end, the money that you win is real. You are just not putting any money down, making it a free sports bet. With Friends for fun - the last type of free sports betting we’ll talk about is when you are wagering against your friends for fun. Some friends like to bet $20 on a game. That would be “real money” sports betting. But other friends love to make friendly wagers just to prove who is smarter. Or maybe for bragging rights or for rights to do something else. Betting with friends for free is a fun way to participate. Ok, there are three types of free sports bets. Let’s now talk about the places you can bet on sports for free. Where Can You Bet on Sports Free. Sportsbooks - As we mentioned above, this is rare but some sportsbooks do offer free bets that allow you to win real money. These are typically promotions. Also, if you find one of these sportsbooks you can only make one free bet as standard. Sometimes you have to 'play' your real money prize 10x or so before you can withdraw it from the site. Those are just three places you can bet on sports free. There are several other smaller sites similar to SportsPlays and BetBomb, but those are the largest two. Let’s now shift gears and talk about a few reasons you may want to consider betting on sports for free. What is the Purpose of Free Sports Betting. Isn’t sports betting supposed to be financially lucrative? Why would you want to do free sports betting? We have a few reasons listed here. Fun - maybe you just enjoy betting on sports but don’t want to put any money down. It’s fun to follow the games and spreads. Learn the sports - betting on sports is a great way to learn about that sport. It forces you to follow the teams and action each night. If you can do that for free, it may be a really easy way for someone to learn sports before diving into real money sports betting. Learn how to bet - maybe you don’t know how to bet? Why would you want to risk real money? Betting for free is a good way to learn about spreads, moneyline, juice and more. Get comfortable with the betting terminology for free before you jump into the real thing and spend your hard earned cash. So are you ready to start betting on sports for free? Once you do, you may be ready sooner than you think to transition into real money sports betting. Hopefully, you enjoyed and learned a little bit about no-deposit sports betting. Where to bet on the Super Bowl in 2021. The following are some of the key factors you may wish to consider when deciding which online betting site you’re going to use to bet on the Super Bowl. Types of sign up offer available. There are many different types of sign-up offers available but which is the one that suits you best? We talk you through some of the most common sign up offers below. As always with these bonuses and promotions, remember to read the terms and conditions so you know all the details to make sure you don’t get caught out. Deposit-Match Bonus. Deposit-match bonuses are when online betting sites match the first deposit you make with bonus cash and are one of the most common sign-up offers. For example, if you deposit $50 dollars into your account, you may get two or three times that to bet with. However, online betting sites always set a maximum bonus amount they will give you. These offers are very popular, as they allow you to bet with more money than you originally deposit into your account, perfect when deciding which bets to place on the Super Bowl this Sunday. Risk-free bet. Risk-free bets are pretty self-explanatory: should your bet lose, you will be given all or most of your money back, with it being refunded in the form of cash or as a free bet. It really is that simple. Risk-free bets are another popular sign-up offer that online betting sites use, as they allow you to bet again should your first bet lose, great if you're looking to place a couple of bets on the Super Bowl. Free bets. Much like risk-free bets, free bets are pretty easy to understand: when you sign up with an online betting site, they will give you free bets which you will be able to use. These free bets are sometimes limited to certain markets or events, but most of the time, you’ll be able to use them on any market or event you want, subject to certain minimum odds. Enhanced odds. Enhanced odds offers may not be as common as deposit bonuses or risk-free bet offers, however they’re still as effective nonetheless. Enhanced odds are when online betting sites increase the odds of a certain market or a specific bet. For example, a bet that was once 3/1 may be increased to 30/1. This allows you to get much higher odds on a bet than you were before. In-play betting possibilities. In-play markets are another key factor when deciding which online betting site to go with for the Super Bowl 2021. Most bookies offer similar markets for in-play, with these ranging from selections that carry over into the in-play market to in-play only markets. When choosing a bookmaker to go with for in-play betting, the quality of their mobile and desktop sites are things to consider. For in-play betting, speed is important, therefore it’s vital you choose a betting site that has an easy-to-navigate set of markets. Simplicity in terms of the betting site itself is important for in-play betting, especially for an event as big as the Super Bowl, where markets and odds will be changing every second. Is the Super Bowl betting site legal in NJ? All of the sites mentioned in this article are legal and licensed betting sites for New Jersey bettors. Benefits of Super Bowl betting online. There are a number of benefits to betting online as opposed to physical, in-person betting. We’ve gone through a few of them here to show you why online betting is worth your consideration. Convenience. One of the main benefits of betting on the Super Bowl online is the convenience of it. In the space of a few seconds, you’ll be able to load up your betting site, browse the markets and place whatever bet you want. Betting in-person tends to be less convenient as you have to travel to your nearest sportsbook and once there you have to accept the odds on offer if you want to make a bet. If you’re betting online you can compare Super Bowl odds from a wide range of betting sites to find the best available. More offers and promotions. Online betting sites will usually offer online users a number of sign-up/promotional offers in order to encourage people to bet on the Super Bowl online. Although physical sportsbooks can also have bonuses these are generally a lot more plentiful at online sports betting sites. Choice of markets. A major benefit of online betting is the wide range of markets. Online betting sites will usually offer a significantly larger number of Super Bowl markets to bet on than bricks-and-mortar sportsbooks. With loads of different types of Super Bowl bets on offer, you can take the time to find exactly the right Chiefs vs Buccaneers bet for you. Free Sports Picks. The set-up: Vancouver won't be lacking for motivation here as it tries to break a three-game slide. It also plays with immediate revenge here after getting spanked 7-3 in this building two nights ago. With another game on Monday here, the Canucks will be risking life and limb getting into shooting and passing lanes tonight to try and get off the schneid. I like betting on motivated teams, and with an extra goal and a half of insurance at this price, I think the Nucks definitely offer value ATS. The pick: Finally, note that Toronto is just 2-6 in its last eight after scoring six or more goals in a four-goals or greater victory in its last outing. In a game which I see being decided late or in extra time, I'm going to lay the reasonable price for the extra 1.5 goals of insurance. This is a 1* FREE PLAY on the Canucks on the puck-line. The Key: The Oregon State Beavers are 4-2 SU & 6-0 ATS in their last six games overall. Their only losses came on the road to USC and UCLA in competitive games. They also beat Oregon on the road, plus ASU, USC and Washington at home. They are playing their best basketball of the season right now and are ready to avenge their 55-59 road loss at Washington State way back on December 2nd. They are a much better team since then. Washington State is just 2-6 SU in its last 8 games overall and has fallen apart. That's with the exception of an upset 74-71 win at Oregon on Thursday, their first win in Eugene in years. But that was an Oregon team that was rusty and coming back from a COVID break. I think this is now a big letdown spot for the Cougars. The Beavers are 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games when avenging a loss where opponent scored less than 60 points. The home team is 6-2 ATS in the last 8 matchups. Take Oregon State. The Cavaliers blew a 63-60 halftime lead over the Bucks and lost by 18 yesterday. They will be looking to avenge that defeat and stay within this 10.5-point spread at the very least. I like their chances here as the Cavaliers are about as healthy as they have been all season right now. Their depth will help them in this back-to-back situation. The Bucks are a lot more top-heavy than they were a year ago, and their lack of a decent bench has hurt them this season as a result. That's why they are a pedestrian 14-8 SU & 11-11 ATS this season. Milwaukee is 7-16-1 ATS in its last 24 games off a win. The Bucks are 1-4 ATS in their last five games as road favorites. The Cavaliers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games as home underdogs. The Wildcats are 5-11 overall including 4-5 in the SEC, certainly not living up to their normal standards. That being said, they lost to 10-0 Alabama twice and second place Missouri. Overall, Kentucky has played the seventh toughest schedule in the country overall which is by far the toughest of any team in the SEC so the record is a bit deceiving. Tennessee is 12-4 including a 5-54 record in the conference so it has not been much better but is laying points on the road. The Volunteers have only won one away game (at Texas A&M) since December 30th. They struggle mightily on the road, especially when it comes to scoring as they are averaging just 60 ppg. It's wholly conceivable that each team scores at least three goals in this game. The Canucks have produced at least three goals in eight of their last 10 games. Toronto ranks 17th defensively giving up 2.9 goals a game. The Maple Leafs are a bottom-eight team killing penalties. Vancouver, though, has the worst defense in the NHL yielding 3.9 goals per game. So it's no surprise the Over is 8-3 in Vancouver's last 11 games. Toronto just buried the Canucks, 7-3, two days ago at home. The Maple Leafs had plenty of energy having been idle the previous four days. They should have lots of energy for this one, too, since it's just their second game in six days. The Maple Leafs are the fourth-highest scoring team in the NHL averaging 3.6 goals. They have scored three or more goals in 10 of their last 11 games. Austin Matthews is making an early case for MVP honors having scored at least one goal in five consecutive games. This is a 1* free play on Georgia Tech. The Yellow Jackets last home game was a double digit win over Florida State, and they boast a record of 7-2 overall at home. The Irish have won four of their last five, but all those wins came against conference bottom feeders. Prior to that they suffered double digit losses to Virginia and Virginia Tech. The Yellow Jackets are 4-0 ATS in their last four home games, and they are 22-7 ATS in their last 29 games following a ATS loss. Georgia Tech has lost three of four, but those losses came against Duke, Louisville and Virginia in close games.

This is a play on the KENTUCKY WILDCATS for our CBB Saturday FREE PLAY. To say it has been a disappointing season for Kentucky would be an understatement. Play (752) Kentucky Wildcats. Matt is now 171-141-7 (+$15,859) the last two years in College Hoops and is ready to keep it going! NBA and NHL are in play as well so grab a weekly or monthly subscription so you do not miss a single play. NFL Game of the Month goes Sunday in Super Bowl 55. Larry Ness. My free play is on Tennessee at 8:00 ET. Kentucky was ranked No. 10 in the AP preseason poll but its 1-6 start took care of that. However, the Wildcats won three straight to open SEC play, after a 76-58 at Florida on Jan 9. Hope was alive in Lexington but the Wildcats have lost FIVE of six since that 3-0 SEC start. Tennessee was No. 12 in the AP's preseason poll and the Vols were 10-1 and ranked 6th when they lost 75-49 at Florida on Jan 19. The Vols have lost THREE of five (including that loss to the Gators) and visit Lexington at 12-4 (ranked 11th). Tennessee blasted Kansas 80-61 last Saturday but then lost 52-50 at Ole Miss this past Tuesday, which had lost FIVE of its previous seven games, including THREE by double digits. Head coach Rick Barnes lamented mistakes in his Volunteers' loss at Ole Miss. They had 16 turnovers, which compounded the troubles they had shooting the ball, 35.6 percent for the game and 10 of 16 on free throws. "We had just some horrendous turnovers," Barnes said. "When you add that to the fact that we missed some shots that I like to think we can make around the rim, and you add that to the fact that with missing the front end of some one-and-ones on free throws, it makes for a long night. That's the disappointing part of it." Tennessee is loaded with perimeter players. Guards Bailey (10.4), Springer (9.6), Pons (9.4 & 5.8), Johnson (9.0), Vescovi (8.7 & 3.8) and Jordon-James (8.3 & 5.8) are quite a group. The 6-9 Fulkerson averages 11.0 & 5.9. It's no surprise that Calipari relies on freshmen, including leading scorer Boston (12.0 & 5.3), who was joined in the backcourt by freshman Clarke (10.7) and Askew (6.6) plus senior Mintz (10.3). However, Clarke has been sidelined since Dec 26 with an ankle injury. 7-0 senior Wake Forest transfer Sarr (10.2 & 5.6) has help up front from 6-10 freshman Jackson (6.6 & 7.1) and now 6-7 sophomore Brooks, who since getting back on the court has averaged 10.1 & 5.3. The Wildcats rallied from a 13-point halftime deficit to within three points, 68-65, with 4:53 remaining at Missouri on Wednesday and still were within four at 74-70 with 1:17 on the clock. However, they missed their last three shots in the final minute, including a couple of layups. Another defeat would saddle the Wildcats with their most losses under coach John Calipari since his 2012-13 team was 21-12. Anyone ever think a Cal-coached team would be averaging 67.6 PPG (269th) on 41.8% shooting (273rd), including 30.2% on threes (298th)? However, that's the case and while the Vols have been inconsistent on the offensive end this season, they are allowing just 58.9 PPG (6th) on 39.3% shooting (21st). Take the road favorite.
How to Read Betting Odds. If you’re new to the world of sports betting, one of the first things you’ll need to do is figure out how betting odds work. At a quick glance, betting odds can be quite intimidating to first-time bettors, and you may find yourself asking “how do betting odds work?” That’s where Compare.bet can help; we’ve taken it back to the basics to explain betting odds and how they work. Odds Converter. What are betting odds? The first step to understanding betting odds is appreciating what they do. Betting odds simply indicate the likelihood of an event and the return you’d get if you did make a wager on the result. Betting odds may be displayed in three different formats at US sportsbooks and online and mobile sports betting platforms: American odds, fractional odds and decimal odds. Different formats don’t mean different odds; it’s simply a different way of presenting them. This isn’t as complicated as it might sound and, by the time you’ve read our guide to betting odds, you’ll be an expert. American odds. Let’s consider a real-world example to understand how American odds work in action: When it comes to calculating the return from a bet made using American odds there are two different formulas that can be used: Calculating negative odds: (100/Odds) x Stake = Profit Using the example above: (100/190) x $100 = $52.65 Calculating positive odds: Odds x (Stake/100) = Profit Using the example above: 170 x ($100/100) = $170. When looking at American odds, it’s important to remember that the results of some matches have a points spread attached to them. This applies to a variety of sports including NBA, NHL, NFL and MLB games. When a point spread is attached to a set of odds it means that for the bet to be successful the team must ‘cover the spread’. This means that the team you are betting on must win or not lose by a predetermined margin of points. Fractional odds. Displaying odds in a fractional format is more common in overseas markets, such as the UK, than at US online sportsbooks, but it’s useful to understand them nonetheless. Fractional odds are some of the most simple to understand, as they present your potential winnings as a fraction of the money you stake: while the denominator represents the amount bet, the numerator is the amount your stake will yield in a winning bet. For example, odds of 1/1 mean you’d get a return of $20 for a winning $10 bet. Want a real-life example? Making a $10 winning bet on an NBA game priced at 5/1, would net you $60 in total. You can use the following formula to calculate potential returns with fractional odds: Decimal odds. The decimal odds format, also known as European odds, represents the multiple of your stake that you will get back for winning a bet. While these are more common at overseas betting exchanges, you may see these at US betting sites. For example, betting on a market priced at 2.5 means you would win two and a half times your stake if your bet were to win. This means you’d win $2.50 for every $1 you wager. Another example of decimal odds in action would be betting on NHL game with odds of 9.0. A $10 stake on odds of 9.0 would earn a total payout of $90 with $80 being won from the sportsbook and your initial $10 stake being returned. You can use the following formula to calculate potential returns with decimal odds: Calculating total payout: Odds x Stake = total payout e.g. 9.0 x $10 = $90 To calculate profit: (Odds x Stake) – Stake = profit e.g. (9.0 x $10) – $10 =$80. Comparing different types of odds. Whichever format odds are written in, they all have an equivalent in another format. While some sites, such as William Hill’s Jersey sportsbook, allow bettors to change odds formats, it is useful to understand how to calculate odds between formats. Not only will this help you understand your potential return, but it also makes it easier to compare betting odds across sportsbooks. Fractional odds to: Decimal odds to: Fractional American (decimal odds-1) and round to nearest integer = fractional odds (decimal – 1) x 100 = American odds (3.75-1=2.75) = 2.75/1 or 11/4 (3.75 – 1) x 100 = 275. Positive American odds to: Negative American odds to: US sports betting markets. We’ve explained betting odds, but what markets are these set on? As the US sports betting industry continues to grow, so does the selection betting options, or betting markets, at each site. Odds will vary between these markets, and even between the same markets at different sports betting sites. Not quite sure what every US sports betting market means? These are the most popular: Straight bet. A straight bet is a single bet on the outcome of a game or sporting event that is determined by a money line or point spread. A futures wager is a bet placed on the outcome of an event in the future. For instance, you can place a wager on the winners of the NFL season which doesn’t even begin until next year. A parlay wager is a single bet that is linked with two or more wagers. In order to win a parlay bet, a bettor must win every wager in the parlay. If a bettor loses one wager in the parlay then they will lose the entire parlay bet. Parlay bets tend to have much higher odds than other bet types. Teaser bets are usually available for basketball and football events. A teaser allows bettors to combine their bets on two different games and adjust the point spreads for the two games. However, the better will see a lower return in the event that their teams win. Round robin. A round robin is essentially a series of parlay bets. For instance, a round robin made up of three teams will consist of three two-team parlay bets. Propositions. Propositions bets are sometimes referred to as “prop” bets. These bets focus more on the outcome of a certain event happening during a sports game such as “which team will score the first touchdown?” or “how many field goals will team x score?” It’s up to you to compare betting odds and pick your betting market. If you’re new to sports betting, we’d recommend sticking to ‘safer’ bets with lower odds until you get to grips with how it works exactly.
How to Understand Sports Betting Odds. We researched and then ranked the best sports betting promo codes, risk-free bets, deposit matches, and other bonus offers from legal online sportsbooks. Check out the best offers here . As more and more states legalize sports betting in the U.S., inevitably more people will be drawn to sports betting. If you are a novice sports bettor, a sportsbook’s odds board or homepage on a mobile app may look like complete gibberish. In this article, we will get you caught up on all the basic terminology you need to know. In addition, we will use this terminology to explain how to read what you see on an odds board and how to apply this knowledge towards your wagers. Example of a Game on an Odds Board. This is an example of an NFL game between the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs that once appeared on a sportsbook’s odds board. You will notice the following categories of terms: rotation numbers, point spread, over/under, and moneylines. Let’s take a look at each term individually. Rotation Numbers. Rotation numbers are commonly used at in-person sportsbooks. These numbers are provided for bettors to easily reference their bets when approaching the cashier. Suppose a bettor wanted to wager on the Cowboys spread. They would approach the cashier and say “I will take number 403, Cowboys -8 for [whatever the bet amount].” The cashier would then have the proposed bet on a screen for the bettor to look at, along with the possible payout. If the bettor was satisfied with the bet, the bet is finalized once the bettor hands the cashier their money. Telling a cashier the rotation number of a bet is not absolutely mandatory. One could simply say “I’ll take the Cowboys -8” and the cashier will likely know that the customer is referring to an NFL point spread. However, one cannot assume the cashier is knowledgeable about every sport, so telling the cashier the rotation number makes their job easier. Point Spreads. Over/Under. Over/unders are also referred to as “totals” in the sports betting world. With over/unders, one is not betting on how much one team will win or lose by. Instead, an over/under is a wager on how many points will be scored. Those who bet on the “over 42.5” think the Cowboys and Chiefs will combine to score more than 42.5 points. Those who bet the “under 42.5” think the two teams will combine to score less than 42.5. Notice how with this particular line, there can be no “push” since there cannot be a half-point scored. Moneylines. Similar to point spreads, a moneyline favorite can be identified with a minus sign next to the number while the underdog will have a plus. With a moneyline bet, one is simply betting who will win the game regardless of the margin of victory. The Cowboys have a moneyline of -400. This fact introduces another important sports term called the “vig.” Those who bet the “Cowboys moneyline” would need to wager $400 to return a profit of $100. That same ratio is applied to all betting amounts, so a $100 bet on the Cowboys moneyline would net a $25 profit. Vigs are Everywhere. If the math to figure out how a vig of -110 works is too difficult, the rule of thumb is that sportsbooks take 10% of the winnings of every bet. However, one does not have to be a mathematical expert to be a successful sports gambler. Remember, a cashier at a sportsbook will always show you what you stand to win before you finalize your bet. Sports Betting Odds. Sports Betting Odds Explained. Many people don’t know how to read or calculate sports betting odds, so below we have done our best on explaining how betting odds work. The most common type of sports betting odds used in North America are the American style odds which we explain below. American Style Sports Betting Odds. Most online sportsbooks will list their odds in what is called “American Odds”. There are a couple different versions of sports betting odds, but these American Odds are the most common odds used. Reading and understanding sports betting odds can bet a little confusing to beginners, so we have provided an example below using two NFL football teams: American Odds. The number shown in the bracket represents the odds. The American Odds have two components to them, the first being the positive or negative sign, and the second being the number that follows the sign. The next step is figuring out exactly how much the bet pays out, which is where the numbers in the odds come into play. A listed odd with a – sign in front of it, such as the -140 in our example above, shows us how much money you would need to wager in order to win $100. So using the -140, this would show us that you would need to bet $140 in order to win $100 in profits. You can easily substitute the $100 bet for a $10 bet by moving the decimal place over one spot, showing us that you would need to wager $14 in order to win $10 in profits. Examples: Examples: Below is an example of NFL betting odds taken from an online betting site. The great thing about betting online is that the online sportsbooks will do the calculations for you before you place your bet. You can click on the outcome or team you would like to bet on, and then input the amount you wish to wager and it will show you your potential pay out before you confirm your bet. Ready To Start Betting? MyBookie and BetNow are my two favorite sportsbooks and make betting very easy. You will also get a Free Money Bonus at each sportsbook if you follow either link above. Decimal Style Sports Betting Odds. Decimal style odds are used mostly in Europe, and are pretty easy to understand. To calculate the decimal style odds all you will need to do is simply multiply the amount you wish to wager by the decimal odds shown and you will get your payout. For example it may look something like this: Decimal Odds. Matchup Odds USA 2.40 Brazil 1.55. If you wanted to place a $10 wager on the USA at 2.40 you would simply need to multiply your $10 wager by the 2.40 odds (10 x 2.40) to find out that the payout is $24. It is important to realize that with decimal style odds it includes the amount you wagered, so to find out profits you would need to subtract your wager ($24 – $10) to find out your potential payout is $14 in profits. If you wanted to place a $10 wager on Brazil you would again just multiply $10 x 1.55 to find out that you would win $15.50 total or $5.50 in profits. Decimal style betting odds are very simple to understand, but you won’t see them displayed in many North American sportsbooks. With that said, most online betting sites will allow you to chose the style of betting odds you want displayed, with American odds set as the default.
Sections. Advertisement. What do sports betting lines mean? Share this article. If that sounds like you, we’re here to assist you. If you’ve stared at a board at a sportsbook or just seen spreads and moneylines on the Internet and been utterly confused, don’t worry. It’s not just you. Those numbers can be confounding. But hopefully, once you’re done reading this, you’ll completely understand how they work. As you prepare to dive into the world of sports betting, here’s a breakdown of how the lines work, starting with … Spreads. It would be really easy to bet on a game if you could put money on a heavy favorite to win. That’s where point spreads come in. Let’s look at an example: In this case, you can bet on either two outcomes: you can put money on the Eagles to win the game by 4.5 points OR MORE, which makes them the favorites. Or you can bet that the Giants will either win or lose by LESS THAN 4.5 points. They’re the underdogs. Now, sometimes the spread “moves” during the days leading up to the game. Perhaps the Eagles’ spread ends up being -3.5 (in which they must win by 3.5 points or more to give you a victory in your bet). Your bet all depends on whichever spread you bet on, whether it was when the Eagles were favored by 4.5 or 3.5 points. If you ever see “PK” or “pick” next to a team, it means there’s no spread and you can bet on who will win, no matter what the score is. Moneylines. Let’s take that same example above but use moneylines: The team with a minus symbol is the favorite, and the number is how much money you would need to bet to win $100. In this case, you would have to bet $200 on the Eagles in order to win an additional $100. Note that you can bet any amount you want, but those numbers are always calculated and posted the same way, either in how much money you would need to wager to win $100 or how much money you could win by wagering $100. If you’re betting on something like the team who will win the Super Bowl in the future, you might see it look like this: New England Patriots — 3/1 Baltimore Ravens — 5/1 Kansas City Chiefs — 8/1. If you were betting on the Patriots and their 3/1 odds, you would win $3 for every $1 you spend. So if you bet $50 on the Pats and they ended up winning the Super Bowl, you’d win $150 (plus your original wager) back.
Sports Betting Explained: What’s A Prop Bet? With sports betting becoming more popular by the day, Super Bowl 55 is in line to be the event with the largest volume of wagering in history. It should be noted that sports betting is not legal in every state in the U.S. just yet, but with more and more states adding legal wagering to their docket, the level of interest is sky-high. To that end, we are continuing a series of explainers on sports betting, following up on a general introduction to the space that explains different kinds of wagers, how odds are calculated, and much more. The second installment is timely when considering the Super Bowl as the backdrop, and it centers on the wide world of prop betting. What is a prop bet, exactly? The most common wagers on a sporting event are covered in our general intro, and they are directly linked to the outcome/score of the game. Those wagers include point spreads, over/under totals, and money lines but, again, they are focused on the actual result of the contest in a big-picture sense. Prop bets (or proposition bets) are wagers that are not directly linked to the overall score or outcome. There are many ways to examine this space, but prop bets gained notoriety from the Super Bowl in many cases, with all eyes fixed on a single game and bookmakers looking for creative ways to entice the public into sinking more money into the action. Prop bets are still far less common than standard point spread bets or total bets, but they are gaining steam, especially in the world of offshore betting, and can be a lot of fun. Standard Game Props. At this point in 2021, game props are available well beyond the Super Bowl, but they can be quite simple and also a bit more complicated. One type of game prop would be an over/under listing on the longest pass play of the game (over/under 27.5 yards, for example). That means a handicapper could wager on either side of that number for the longest pass play, and the same applies for wagers like shortest touchdown, longest touchdown, total penalty yardage, and more. That encompasses a great deal of the game prop market, but there are others to consider. For example, a prominent Super Bowl bet is whether the game will go to overtime, with “yes” and “no” offered. These yes/no bets are very easy to track, simply because it is clear whether the event takes place or not. Finally, there are team vs. team wagers that fall under a similar umbrella. Which team will have more rushing yards? Which team will score first? Which team will score last? Which team will kick more field goals? All of these bets could be (or have been) available for any game, with the bettor given the option to choose a side. Player Props. This may be oversimplified, but player props basically encompass any wager dictated by the performances of individual players. For example, a popular Super Bowl bet is which player will score the first touchdown, with sportsbooks offering sometimes long odds on various players, with only one able to cash a winning ticket. This could also be applied to basketball with which player scores the first (or last) point of the game, or to baseball with the first/last/most home runs of the night. Those are broad bets that could pay lofty odds if things break just a certain way, but there are also more common over/under bets. The Super Bowl is, again, a good example here, with the ability to wager on the over/under for passing yards from Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes. Bookmakers build lines for yards (passing, receiving, rushing, etc.), receptions, completions, carries, touchdowns and much more in the football space, with points, rebounds and assists in basketball and hits, strikeouts, and home runs in baseball. This is a more efficient market in recent years, simply because many smart people are now finding value, but these can also be entertaining and a way to track a “game within the game.” Exotics. This is the area where a gigantic game, i.e. the Super Bowl, really shines. One of the more famous examples is a large market on just how long the national anthem will be, from start to finish, before kick-off. Another could be tied to the coin toss, with people able to wager on “heads” versus “tails.” It can even be as weird as tracking what words the announcers say, or what color someone’s shoes are, or whether the Gatorade poured over the winning coach’s head is green, orange, blue, or a different color. Yes, this is hilarious and often weird. Yes, it can also be delightful, but it certainly trends more to the “entertainment purposes only” genre of sports handicapping.
How Do Odds Work in Betting? If you are planning to start betting, be it casino gambling, sports betting, or any other type, it's important to understand the odds. It would be preposterous and absurd to think about placing bets without having a good grip on the main types of betting odds and the ability to read and interpret the various associated formats. The three main types of betting odds are fractional (British) odds, decimal (European) odds, and American (moneyline) odds. These are simply different ways of presenting the same thing and hold no difference in terms of payouts. This means that a chance (percentage probability) of an event occurring can be converted and presented in any of the aforementioned types of odds. How Fractional Odds Work. Fractional odds (aka British odds, UK odds, or traditional odds) are popular among British and Irish bookies. These are typically written with a “slash (/)” or a “hyphen (-),” e.g. 6/1 or 6-1 and announced as “six-to-one.” Fractional odds are used by some of the world’s largest bookmakers, making them the most preferred odds across the globe. Therefore, the total (potential) return on a stake can be stated as: For instance, one of the major sports betting websites listed the following fractional odds for futures betting on the team to win the 2017-18 NBA Championship. Below is a selection of the three teams that had the lowest odds of winning. Golden State Warriors: 10/11 Houston Rockets: 9/4 Cleveland Cavaliers: 7/1. It can quickly be determined that the Golden State Warriors are the favorites while the odds on Houston and Cleveland winning are longer. That is, one wins only $10 against every $11 wagered on Golden State to be the champions. Meanwhile, one wins $9 against each $4 (i.e. 3.25 times) put at stake for Houston to win, which is a bit less probable. For Cleveland, one wins $7 against each $1 bet. In the above example, if you bet $100 on Golden State to win, you could make a $90.91 profit [$100 x (10/11)], and could get back your initial stake of $100, resulting in a total payout of $190.91. However, if you wager $100 on Houston to win, you could receive a profit of $225 [$100 x (9/4)], in addition to the $100 initial stake leading to a total payout of $325. The potential profit for a Cleveland win would be even higher, as you could make a profit of $700 [$100 x (7/1)]. With the initial stake of $100 being returned, it would make for a total payout of $800. How Decimal Odds Work. Decimal odds (aka European odds, digital odds, or continental odds) are popular in continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. These are a bit easier to understand and work with. The favorites and underdogs can be spotted instantaneously by looking at the numbers. The decimal odds number represents the amount one wins for every $1 wagered. For decimal odds, the number represents the total payout, rather than the profit. In other words, your stake is already included in the decimal number (no need to add back your stake), which makes its total payout calculation easier. The total (potential) return on a stake can be calculated as: For instance, one of the renowned betting websites priced the candidates to win the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election. Here, we list the decimal odds for the candidates and the biggest long shot among the candidates listed by the bookmaker. Donald Trump: 4.00 Joe Biden: 1.3. These numbers merely represent the amount one could win against each $1 put at stake. Therefore, if one bets $100 on Donald Trump to be re-elected as president, this person could make a total payout of $400 ($100 x 4.00). This amount includes the initial stake of $100, giving a net profit of $300. Similarly, a bettor could make a total payout of $130 ($100 x 1.3) if they successfully bet $100 on Joe Biden. Deducting $100 from this return gives the bettor the net profit earned. Reviewing the prices that the bookmaker has set for each candidate, it can be determined that according to the bookmaker, the probability of Biden (favorite) winning the election is higher than that for Trump. The higher the total payout (i.e. the higher the decimal odd), the less probable (and riskier) it is for the listed candidate to win. How American (Moneyline) Odds Work. Let’s understand this with the help of an example: One of the popular betting websites priced the NCAA "Sweet 16" men's basketball game between Duke and Syracuse on March 23, 2018, with the following moneyline odds. In this matchup, there is a big difference between the two odds, indicating a much higher probability of Duke winning the game and advancing to the next round of the NCAA Tournament. Key Takeaways. The three main types of betting odds are fractional (British) odds, decimal (European) odds, and American (moneyline) odds. These are simply different ways of presenting the same thing, and hold no difference in terms of payouts. Fractional odds are the ratio of the amount (profit) won to the stake; Decimal odds represent the amount one wins for every $1 wagered; and American odds, depending on the negative or positive sign, either indicate the amount one needs to wager to win $100 or the amount one would win for every $100 staked. The Bottom Line. If you are planning to enter the betting or the gambling world, it is important to be able to understand and interpret all types of odds well. Once you have mastered the three popular types of odds (fractional, decimal, and American), you can move towards a more detailed read on this topic and find out how the house always wins. Please refer to Understanding the Math Behind Betting Odds & Gambling for the conversion between the different formats of odds, the conversion of odds into implied probabilities, and the differences between the true chances of an outcome as well as the odds on display.
How To Compile Your Own Odds. January 12, 2016 By Bradley Gibbs. Looking for GOOD Football Trading Strategies? Would you like to cut to the chase and learn the BEST football trading strategies that will allow you to make a second or even primary income? Interested in becoming a member? And getting a FULL portfolio of 8 strategies? This is a guest post from sports betting expert and successful punter Bradley Gibbs. This is definitely a very important read for anyone who wants to punt profitably and you should bookmark this page and refer back to it very, very often! Being able to compile your own odds is one of the key steps to being a successful punter. All of the profiting gamblers I’ve ever met or have indeed read about price up events for themselves and stress the importance of doing so. This article takes a look at why it is very useful to compile odds, and how it can be achieved. Who compiles odds? Many people associate odds compiling and the pricing up of events as practices carried out solely by bookmakers or the people bookmakers employ to do so – often known as ‘odds compilers’. The bookmaker forms a market by compiling a set of odds and the punter comes along and places their bet. The majority of punters are happy to accept whatever odds are offered on a particular market and place their bets without thinking too much of it, and for much of the betting world this is how it goes. But of course, as with many things, there are a few diamonds in the rough, a small percentage of punters out there who aren’t willing to conform to this normality. These are the shrewd punters who make that extra effort to tilt the scales in their favour by compiling their own odds. In doing so this type of punter uses their own odds in comparison with the odds set by the bookmaker in order to find and exploit good value. Why compile our own odds? If you’re serious about making a success of your punting efforts then compiling your own odds is something you really ought to be doing. For you can be sure, at least to some degree, that the successful minority are indeed compiling their own sets of odds. To some it might seem a bit long winded and perhaps even unnecessary to compile your own set of odds for each market you want to bet on, but the reality is – as with almost everything in life – to get results you have to put the work in. Pricing up events is an essential part of the work carried out by the serious punter. The main advantage of pricing up events is that it allows the punter to compare their own prices with those available with the bookmakers or on the exchange. What do you need to price up? It seems to be a fairly common misconception that compiling your own odds is a highly advanced process and can only be done by those who are blessed with a superior mathematical brain. This is simply not true. You don’t need to be a numbers genius to price up events for yourself, all you really need to do is be able to carry out some simple arithmetic. It is important to note that although you don’t need to be a particularly gifted mathematician to compile your own odds, you will need a strong knowledge of the event you’re planning to price up. For example if you’ve only got a beginners knowledge of racing then compiling your own odds will be pretty pointless as you will likely be hugely inaccurate. So first off make sure you are thoroughly educated in the sport you’re going to bet on. How do you compile your own odds? Pricing up a simple football market: Let’s use a simple win/draw/win football market example to put this into practice. We’ll imagine that top four chasing, Tottenham are travelling to face struggling, Newcastle. We’ll start by looking at the relative home and away form of each side. To keep the example simple let’s look at Newcastle’s last 10 home games and Tottenham’s last 10 away games. Newcastle last 10 home games = Won 3, lost 4 and drawn 3 Tottenham last 10 away games = Won 3, lost 3 and drawn 4. What we now need to do is use these figures to determine the odds on a home win, away win and the draw. To get a Newcastle win we add their 3 home wins to Tottenham’s 3 way losses = 6 To get a price for the draw we add 3 Newcastle draws to the 4 Tottenham draws = 7 To get Tottenham’s price we add their 3 away wins to Newcastle’s 4 losses = 7. This leaves us with the following: Newcastle 6, Draw 7 and Tottenham 7. In order to get the percentage chances from this all we do is divide each number by the total number of matches sampled. So in this case 20. Newcastle percentage = 6/20 = 30% Tottenham percentage = 7/20 = 35% Draw = 7/20 = 35% As discussed above all we do now is simply divide 100 by the percentage figure in order to express the chances of each team as odds. Newcastle – 100/30 = 3.33 Tottenham – 100/35 = 2.85 Draw – 100/35 = 2.85. We have now priced the win/draw/win market up as; 3.33 for a home win and 2.85 for both a draw and an away victory. Let’s assume that you feel Tottenham are much the stronger team and you expect them to win the game; however, the price available is only 2.65. You wouldn’t bet an away win at these odds simply because they are lower than the odds you have calculated yourself (your own odds being the ones you believe to be the true representation). Betting on a price below this would represent a bad value bet. On the other hand let’s imagine that you could back Tottenham to win at 3.00. At these odds Tottenham would be a better bet and would indeed represent good value. Of course using just a sample of each teams’ relevant home/away form is quite a simple example and there are of course plenty of other factors you can consider when pricing up a game such as this. For example you may wish to consider a longer streak of games, perhaps 20. You can also consider both the home and away form of each side rather than just one or the other. Considering how the teams fared against similar opposition is also something that is recommended. Pricing up a horse race – Pricing up a horse race can be a bit trickier than a simple win/draw/win football market. The main reason for this is that there are less tangible statistics in a horse race. You will need to have an expert knowledge of form and be able to consider all the different factors involved in analysing both races and a particular horses’ chance. As for the actual pricing up of the event itself, then this is pretty much the same as that which is discussed above. It is important to price the race to 100% and assign a percentage figure to each horse in the race. Keeping things simple, let’s say that having analysed a three runner race you have compiled odds on the three runners to 100% and your prices show: 2.00 (50%), 4.00 (25%) and 4.00 (25%). By these calculations you believe that the favourite should be an even money shot and therefore has a 50% chance of winning. However, the actual prices available are: 2.50 (40%), 3.00 (33.3%) and 3.50 (28.6%). If this were to be the case – assuming you were right in your analysis – the value would lie in betting the favourite at a price of 2.00. This is simply because judging by your own prices the horse has a 10% greater chance of winning the race than the odds available suggest. There are a lot of factors to consider when pricing up a race, so as a basic starting point it is advised that when beginning to do so you focus on smaller field events – probably 8 runners or less. Any more can become quite a headache, even for the more experienced odds compiler! The best thing to do before attempting to price up a horse race is to simply know your stuff! Learn about the different aspects of analysing racing and race form, there is tons of information out there, most of which is readily available at the click of a button. Read up on everything you can regarding the best ways to look at races and just generally learn as much as possible! The benefits of compiling your own odds. As we can see from both the racing and football examples above, the reason punters would choose to price up events for themselves is that it helps to both identify and exploit value. Of course “value” or “true odds” can be pretty vague terms, after all despite what some people may say, whether or not a selection represents good or bad value is never really more than matter of opinion, an opinion that is only proved right or wrong after the event has finished. There is no doubt that being able to compile your own odds – using them as a comparison with those that are available on betting exchanges or with bookmakers – is an invaluable skill when aiming to be successful as a punter. Being able to do this though is nowhere near as useful as being able to do it correctly! This comes from hard work and knowing your stuff. The bottom line is this; work hard, learn all there is to learn, practice compiling your own odds and through a combination of having an expert understanding of betting on your sport and the ability to compile your own odds you will give yourself an edge over the majority of the betting world.

In simplest terms, odds are a way of expressing the relationship between the number of favorable outcomes in a given situation versus the number of unfavorable outcomes. Usually, this is expressed as a ratio (like 1 : 3 or 1/3 ). Calculating odds is central to the strategy of many games of chance, like roulette, horse racing and poker. Whether you're a high-roller or simply a curious newcomer, learning how to calculate odds can make games of chance a more enjoyable (and profitable!) activity. David Jia Academic Tutor Expert Interview. 14 January 2021. Let's say we bet that we'll roll either a one or a two. In this case, there's two possibilities where we win - if the dice shows a two, we win, and if the dice shows a one, we also win. Thus, there are two favorable outcomes. David Jia Academic Tutor Expert Interview. 14 January 2021. In the example with the die, if we bet that we'll roll either a one or a two, that means we'll lose if we roll a three, four, five, or six. Since there are four ways that we can lose, that means that there are four unfavorable outcomes. Another way to think of this is as the Number of total outcomes minus the number of favorable outcomes. When rolling a die, there are a total of six possible outcomes - one for each number on the die. In our example, then, we would subtract two (the number of desired outcomes) from six. 6 - 2 = 4 unfavorable outcomes. Similarly, you may subtract the number of unfavorable outcomes from the total number of outcomes to find the number of favorable outcomes. David Jia Academic Tutor Expert Interview. 14 January 2021. You may choose to represent this ratio as a fraction. In this case, our odds are 2/4 , simplified as 1/2. Note - 1/2 odds don't mean we have a one-half (50%) chance of winning. In fact, we have a one-third chance of winning. Remember when expressing odds that odds are a ratio of favorable outcomes to unfavorable outcomes - not a numerical measurement of how likely we are to win.
How Does Sports Betting Work? Doc’s Sports Provides the Answers. Sports betting has become a phenomenon across the world. People all around the world will put wagers on a sporting event to create more excitement around a game for themselves. Let’s face it, you wouldn’t watch a 1-10 team play a 2-9 team without placing a wager. But once the wager is in, you’re absolutely tuning in and watching every second. Most sportsbooks have in-house oddsmakers that are in charge of creating betting lines in the weeks before games, especially when it comes to Opening Day or the NFL. In baseball, the oddsmakers are required to make the lines daily as games never seem to stop in the summer with the MLB. Years ago, the oddsmakers didn't have that much information to look at when trying to make betting lines. Now there are analytics everywhere to come up with all of the lines much more accurately. Back then, oddsmakers would really only have box scores to look at. Now oddsmakers can look up anything and everything which gives them an advantage over the average bettor. Of course, records and things like the weather are important, but deeper stats mean so much more to oddsmakers. They’re able to develop systems to figure out exactly how much a team will score and such. You know the saying, “Vegas is always right.” Unless you follow Doc’s Sports picks. Then it’s different. How Lines Move. When a game starts out at -3 for a team and the line changes to -2 before the game begins, that means that there’s action on the game or an injury to a key player. There are "sharp'' bettors that place a large bet on one team that forces oddsmakers to raise an eyebrow and switch the lines. An oddsmaker is always watching action to see if a change is necessary on the lines. Popular Ways to Bet. Point spread. A point spread is a handicap where you essentially give or receive points on top of the actual outcome of the game. The spread basically looks at how a sportsbook or oddsmaker thinks about what the outcome might be. For example, in an NFL game, if the Kansas City Chiefs are -3 on the spread, the oddsmakers believe that the Chiefs will win their game by three points. If your data and analysis say otherwise, you would be on the opposite slide and gain three points from their opponent. So, if you bet on the Chiefs with the spread, you would have needed them to win by more than 3 points to cash your ticket. If the score was 27-21, Chiefs, you would win your bet. But if it was 23-21, Chiefs, you would lose because the other side gained three points and won 24-23 theoretically. Betting on spreads allows you to pick a team to win with better odds. If you were to just pick the Chiefs to win that game, you would have to lay a lot of money on the Chiefs. Picking them against the spread gives you a chance to make money near an even line. Moneyline bets: Moneyline bets take some stress away. With a moneyline bet, you only need your team to win the game and don’t need to worry about how much they do it by. We’ve all been there where we’ve taken a team to win by 7.5 and then a team wins by just seven. Those are the worst bad breaks and losing bets possible and not fun to endure. After the game, you’ll then wish you had been on the moneyline instead. Those absolutely sting. The problem with money lines is that you will have to lay a lot more money on the team to win. On heavy favorites, you’re looking at putting down $300 just to win $100 on teams that are -300 American odds. If the San Francisco 49ers were -300 against the Minnesota Vikings, all you would need is for the 49ers to win the game. However, if they are upset, you’d lose $300 trying to win just $100. Heavy money lines are very scary if your team doesn’t perform like they should be or how they were projected to. Point total bets. With totals, or over/under betting, you don’t need to worry about who wins the game. You’re worried about how many points are scored in the game. For example, if you bet over 52 points on the New York Giants against the Philadelphia Eagles, you’d want the combined score between the two teams to be more than 52 points. Therefore, if the score was 35-28, you would have 63 points and score over 52 points. If the score was 17-14, you would have a total of 31 points and the total would go under. Therefore, you would lose the wager and the bet. You don’t only have to bet on the total for the game, but you can also bet on the team total for a certain team. If you’re not sure about one side but you love the other side, you can isolate a team and bet their team total. Proposition bets: Many people make their money on proposition bets. Prop bets are available for most sporting events, and you can bet anything from a team’s total to how many yards a player will rush for to how many touchdowns a player will score. Prop bets are like playing fantasy sports but with odds. Prop bets are extremely popular during the Super Bowl, where people go as far as betting on how long the National Anthem will be. There are some ridiculous props like what color Gatorade will be poured on the winning head coach. Unless you have insight on those bets, it’s hard to have concrete analysis for that. You’re basically just trying to hit the lottery. How a Moneyline Works in Sports Betting. For beginning sports gamblers, moneylines (sometimes called money lines or American odds) can be confusing. Unlike point spreads, which are concerned with who wins and by how much, a moneyline is solely dependent upon who wins. Moneylines are used most commonly in low-scoring games like baseball or hockey, but they may also be used in boxing and other sports. How to Read a Moneyline. Simply put, a moneyline tells you how much you have to wager in order to make a profit of $100. Consider a hypothetical baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers. When looking at the moneyline for the game, a bettor will see something like this: In this instance, the Dodgers are the favored team, as signified by the negative numeral. It would cost you $130 in order to collect a $100 payout on a Dodgers victory (plus the original wager of $130). But if you bet $100 on the Cubs, you'd collect $120 if they win (plus the original wager). In other words, you'll have to wager more money on Los Angeles than you would Chicago in order collect $100 on a bet. It's important to remember that even though moneylines are expressed in units of $100, you do not have to bet that much money. The moneyline will work just as easily with a $5 or $10 wager as it does with $100. Moneyline Uses. Besides baseball and hockey, moneylines are used for betting on other sports where a point spread becomes irrelevant, such as auto racing, boxing, soccer, and tennis. While there are margins of victory in some of these, they are so small that it would be impossible to create a point spread for every game. The difference between moneyline odds increases as the likelihood of the favorite winning increases. For example, in a boxing match, it would not be unusual to see odds such as these: In this instance, those betting on Joe Louis are being asked to risk $700 to win $100, while Ray Leonard backers are risking $100 to win $550. Moneylines Versus Point Spreads. In point-spread betting, the bookie hopes to have an equal amount of money wagered on each team, which guarantees a profit. In moneyline betting, the bookie assumes most people are going to wager on the favorite and sets the line on the underdog so as to cover any potential losses on the favorite. Using the Louis-Leonard fight as an example, the bookmaker knows more money is going to be wagered on Louis than Leonard because Leonard's chances of winning are much greater. If bettors collectively wager $14,000 on Louis, the bookmaker must also receive $2,000 in wagers on Leonard to cover his payouts. If Louis wins as expected, the bookmaker will take the $2,000 from the losing Leonard bettors and pay off the winners. But if Leonard pulls off the upset and wins, the bookmaker will take the $14,000 from the losing Louis bettors, pay $11,000 to the Leonard bettors, and keep $3,000 in profit. Moneyline betting is generally offered on all sporting events, even those that also use the point spread, such as football and basketball. In these instances, you'll have to do some quick math to see which form of oddsmaking promises a greater payout, if any.
How Sports Betting Works. Sports betting is illegal throughout most of the United States, common throughout much of Europe, and an everyday part of the gambling industry in Nevada. It's difficult to figure out how much money is bet on sports in the United States since the majority of it is done illegally, but experts estimate a "handle" of more than $200 billion annually [ref]. Simply placing a bet can be a confusing affair -- sports books have their own lingo, and the systems vary. Figuring out how to bet well enough to make some money is another matter entirely. How are the odds determined? Who sets the line? What percentage of the time do you need to win to break even? In this article we'll explain the important elements of betting and odds making, trace the history of betting in the United States, and show why betting on sports almost always results in losing money in the long run. Sports Betting Basics. Different sports have different systems for oddsmaking and betting. There are even different systems for the same sport, depending on what kind of game the bettor wants to play. But to understand any of these systems, you first have to understand the jargon. Action - Action is simply betting activity. Phrases such as "I want in on the action" or "Show me where the action is" come from this term. Since betting on sports is illegal in many places, you can't always look up your local bookie in the phone book. Handicap - In sports betting, "to handicap" is to give one team a points advantage in order to level the betting field. Handle - The handle is the total amount of money wagered on bets. Super Bowl betting generates the biggest handle of the year for most bookies. Sportsbook - An establishment that takes bets, also known as a book. An individual who takes bets is a bookie. Juice - This is the percentage of all bets taken by the bookie as profit. The juice is also known as the vig , short for vigorish. Sometimes bookies take a straight percentage of the handle, but more often the vig is figured into the odds. The spread - The point spread is used in high-scoring sports like football and basketball. It is basically a handicap used to make all games competitive in the eyes of bettors. The spread gives one team an advantage of a few points. Standard notation for the point spread shows the favored team first, followed by a negative number (the actual spread). The home team is shown in capital letters. So if Buffalo was playing against Green Bay in Green Bay, and they were favored to win by seven points, it would look like this: If someone bets on Buffalo to win, Buffalo would actually have to win by more than seven points for the bet to pay off. It's as if Green Bay were given a seven-point lead at the start of the game. The money line - In sports like baseball, scoring isn't high enough to use a point spread. The money line is used instead. A money line listing might look like this: Sometimes the decimal point is left out, so 120 is the same as 1.20. If you want to bet on the favored team, the White Sox, you have to bet $1.20 for every $1 you want to win. If you want to bet on the underdog Astros, you have to bet $1 for every $1.10 you want to win. This is known as the dime line, because ten cents separate the favorite from the underdog. Most bookies offer a dime line, although it can increase to a 20 cent line or greater if one team is heavily favored. If the money line seems confusing, think of it as a simple pricing system. You want to win a certain amount of money on your bet. Chances are greater that the favored team will win the game, so it costs more to bet on the favorite to win that amount than it costs to bet on the underdog. Here's an example: Imagine that using the money line above with the White Sox and the Astros, you want to win about $100. If you place your bet on the favored White Sox, you will pay the bookie $120. If you win, you get your $120 back, plus $100 in winnings. If you lose, the bookie keeps your $120 (technically, bookies collect on losing bets after the game most of the time, but for our example we'll assume the bet is prepaid). If you bet $100 on the Astros, you'll get $110 in winnings if they win, and only lose $100 if they lose. Pick'em - Sometimes money line games will be listed as "pick" or "pick'em." This means that the teams are considered equal, and the line on both teams is -1.10. Betting on either team requires $1.10 per $1 in potential winnings [ref]. Pools, cards, and parlays - A parlay is just a combination bet. Instead of making five separate bets on five different games, the bettor places a single parlay bet, hoping he or she can predict the outcome of all five games. If any one of the games is a loser, the entire parlay is a loser. The payout is better for parlays, because the odds of successfully picking multiple winners are much tougher to beat [ref]. Most people are familiar with parlays through office betting pools or football cards. If you've ever paid $5 to select your winners from a list of that week's football games (sometimes using the spread, sometimes using the straight scores) in hopes of winning the weekly prize, then you have made an informal parlay bet. Office pools don't usually involve actual bookies beyond the person who organizes the pool, and no one takes juice from the pool. All the money is distributed to the winner or winners. Next, we'll find out how oddsmakers set the line and figure out the spread. What's the difference between an oddsmaker and a bookie? A bookie's job is purely mechanical. He gets the line from Vegas or another source, offers bets at those odds, then collects money from the losers, pays out to the winners and keeps the vig. Oddsmakers don't actually take bets -- they study the games and set the lines. Bookies often adjust the spreads for their games, so they do a little oddsmaking, and oddsmakers work for casinos, which operate sports books that take bets.

Excel Sports Bet Tracking Spreadsheet 2021 (Free!) Ever wondered how you are actually doing in sports betting? Just like tracking your finances can be an eye opening experience (I spent how much at restaurants last month?!), tracking your bets can shed some light on your performance. Download the free sports bet tracking spreadsheet below to get started (available for both Excel and Google Sheets): Bet Tracker Spreadsheet: Instant Insights. If you want to measure your performance and see where you are succeeding and failing, you need to track it. With this free tool, you can see your performance broken down by various dimensions. Have a great ROI on betting NBA 2nd halves? Getting solid closing line value on NFL point spreads? This spreadsheet allows you to answer questions like this and more. How to use the spreadsheet. While the spreadsheet is pretty straightforward, I’d like to walk you through how it works. How to track sports bets. Everything lives in the “Bet Log” tab. This is the only place information is manually entered. Once the data is entered there, all other tabs will automatically populate. In the “Bet Log” tab, blue columns are required while red columns are optional. The more information you input, the more useful the spreadsheet will be. Entering things like the closing line, while slightly annoying, will also be the most important to your success. How to analyze performance. Each tab will have different graphs and tables that show your performance. The beauty of this is that you can filter the data by any dimension you like. Any yellow cell is an “input” cell that can be changed. All of these are dropdowns that are pre-populated based on the information you enter in the Bet Log. How to add more leagues and teams. To add new leagues and teams, you will do so in the “REF” tab. This tab holds all of the lookup information for the dropdowns throughout the spreadsheet. Again, the cells available to modify are in yellow. You can add the following dimensions: Leagues (ex: WNBA) Teams (ex: Chicago Sky) Tags (ex: 2nd half) Bet Tracker Spreadsheet Metrics. Deciding what to track is important in determining how you measure success. The spreadsheet tracks the following key metrics: Closing Line Value. Closing line value (CLV) is a measure of how much better or worse the odds you bet at were compared to where they closed. If you believe the markets you are betting into are efficient (NFL point spreads, MLB moneylines, etc.), then CLV is a great predictor of long term success. All you need to do is input the odds you placed your bet at as well as where the odds closed. Preferably you use a market making sportsbook like Pinnacle to decide what the “true” closing line was. Profit. Profit is about as simple as it gets. Are you making or losing money? While this is the “bottom line”, surprisingly it isn’t always predictive of long term success. Still, you will obviously want to see how much money you have made or lost. This is what most people tend to look at. It is a measure of how profitable you are relative to how much you are risking. While at the end of the day, the money in your pocket is what matters, this metric focuses more on results rather than process and is a measure of efficiency. ROI isn’t as predictive of long term winning as CLV, but is useful to track to see where you stand. This one is simple, yet will likely give you insights into where you are putting your money. If you have a model, does it consistently value the Dallas Cowboys differently than the market? Thus making many of your bets on the Cowboys? Analyzing your risk by league/team/bet type can give you these types of answers. Bankroll. Bankroll will track our running total of how much money you have in your accounts across all sportsbooks. You can also see this trended over time to help you see any changes in your betting strategy and how that has affected your bankroll. It is very useful to see, at a glance, where your money lies. Is 95% of our bankroll at FanDuel? Maybe you should shift some to DraftKings. Bet Tracker Spreadsheet Dimensions. Having these metrics available is important, but insights really come from slicing the data by different dimensions. League/Team. Tracking your performance by league or team can give you clues into where your strengths or weaknesses are. Do you watch every second of every New York Knicks game? Think you have an edge on Knicks games? You can find out using the spreadsheet. Same goes for leagues. Do you follow NFL closely but use strictly numbers for NCAA Basketball? Compare the performance of the two and see what’s working. Bet Type. Looking at performance by bet type can also shed some light on your process, especially if it is model driven. Track your performance by the following bet types: Spread Moneyline Total Prop Future. You can also use the “Tag” field to designate special types of bets. For example, if you want to see your performance on moneylines for NBA 2nd halves, you would put “2H” (or something similar) in the Tag field and “moneyline” in the bet type field. A common way to analyze performance is to look at metrics trended over time. Look at any of the metric/dimension combinations above trended over any time period you’d like. Want to see your performance over the last 14 days? Or how about the last 12 weeks? Both are possible here. Google Sheets Sports Betting Tracker. The sports betting tracker is also available on Google Sheets. While the features are the same as the Excel file, Google Sheets has some notable benefits: Available/online at all times Can enter bets on your phone using the Sheets app You don’t need to be at a computer to enter your bets Google Sheets auto saves any changes Allows multiple users to be in the sheet at the same time and make changes.

The Kansas City Chiefs wil meet the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl 55 from Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida on Feb. 7, 2021. The Chiefs opened as -3.5 betting favorites while the Buccaneers are 3.5 underdogs. After early wagers came in, most operators are holding Kansas City -3 (-120). If you were to wager on Kansas City -3, you would have to lay 5/6 odds (Bet $120 to win $100) instead of your normal 10/11 juice (Bet $110 to win $100). The return on Tampa Bay would be even-money (1/1) and a $100 wager would return $100. The total or over-under on Super Bowl 55 is hovering between 56 and 57 points. How to read NFL Las Vegas Odds. The point-spread was developed to provide a balance for both teams involved in a contest to entice bettors to potentially back the weaker team and receive points. The two squads in a game are listed with a title, either a favorite or an underdog. The favorite is usually the perceived better team in the game, as backing them means giving up several points. Ex. Bet $110 to win $100 (10% juice) Ex. Bet $100 to win $90.91 (10% juice) It's not uncommon to see other values posted other than -10. Examples seen on the NFL Vegas Odds pages could include -08 , -12 , -15 and -20 . The -10 price is the most common value in the industry while many books offer reduced 'juice odds' and that would fall into the -08 category. The lower-juice sportsbooks are normally found outside of the state Nevada. If you are in a state where sports betting is legal, please check out our online sportsbook directory to find the best and most secure places to make NFL bets. Another number that’s posted on the NFL Las Vegas is the total or ‘over/under’ for the specific matchup. If the favorite is designated as the home team, then the total will be listed above and vice versa if the visitors are favorites. All of the above numbers are listed next to the teams, and before each matchup is a Rotation number. The NFL Las Vegas Odds are listed in order of rotation and those numbers are generated and produced by the sportsbooks. Above each matchup and rotation is the Time of the game, which is subject to change. All game times are Eastern Standard Time. NFL Open Line. One of the best features on the NFL Vegas Odds is the Open Line. This numbers consists of the first betting line received from one of our Las Vegas or Global Sportsbooks. The opening line varies depending on the sportsbook but it provides a clear-cut rating that the oddsmakers use. If you’re betting on the NFL or any other sport, it’s a great idea to view the open line first. VI Consensus NFL Line. How do I bet on the Super Bowl? We know that you can bet on the Super Bowl and all of NFL Futures or bet on the NFL Draft at any time of the year, but what’s the process? The future wager or the “Odds to Win” bet on the Super Bowl is correctly selecting a team to win an event that takes place at a later time. A bettor will have his wagered money tied up until there is an outcome and bettors will receive fixed odds when they place the wager. In the case of the Super Bowl, you’re not a winner or loser until you see zeros on the clock in the final game. Most sportsbooks offer different ways to read to Super Bowl Odds. In the fractional NFL Futures Odds format below, you simply take the odds and multiply by the amount wagered. Ex. Green Bay (8/1) to win the Super Bowl. The Packers are listed as an 8/1 betting choice to win the Super Bowl. If you wager $100 on Green Bay to win the NFC and they capture the championship, then you would win $800 (8 ÷ 1 x 100). Your online betting account would then credit your account $900, which includes your win and stake ($100). If you are in a state where online betting is legal, we encourage you to check out our sportsbook directory to find the most trustworthy and reputable sites and mobile apps to place your Super Bowl bets.
FanDuel CEO says the pandemic could force more states to legalize sports betting. FanDuel CEO Matt King joked with MarketWatch that the Super Bowl should fall into the “essential travel” recommendations from the CDC. King, the head of the New York-based bookmaker and daily fantasy sports site since 2017, is an annual attendee of the big game, but this year decided it “didn’t make sense” to go. Like millions of other NFL fans, King will be watching the Chiefs take on the Bucs on TV. In an interview with MarketWatch, King weighed in on how the pandemic is accelerating sports betting, FanDuel’s interest in becoming a public company, and if legal sports betting in New York state is a “game-changer.” MarketWatch: Is FanDuel doing any physical events for the Super Bowl this year? King: It’s pretty limited this year. Last year we did a bunch of events with players and some events with a few of our partners that are down there. A series of smaller things. MarketWatch: Do you anticipate more money being wagered on the Super Bowl this year than in past years? King: Yeah there’s going to be a lot more. Obviously we are in a lot more states, that’s the tailwind, but even the states that we’ve been operating in the last two years are up significantly this year. MarketWatch: What are your total bet projections for the game? King: Our business is up dramatically. I’m not sure we are disclosing our specific projections but it’ll be by far the biggest game on record for us. Many orders of magnitude up year-over-year. The statistic I can give you because it’s on the tip of my tongue is that in the first 28 days of 2021, we’ve done $1 billion in handle on the sportsbook. We didn’t hit $1 billion in handle in 2020 until Q4. MarketWatch: Any particular growth areas in your business that you’re seeing? Something like live-betting for example? King: The live-betting has been pretty popular since day one. I would say the big story this year is going to be our same-game parlay product. This is where you can bet on multiple things happening in the same game and we are really the only ones in the market that offers it. The Super Bowl is perfect for same-game parlay betting. It allows people to say “here are the three guys who I think are going to score a touchdown.” The customer acceptance of the product so far this year has been off the charts. MarketWatch: Florida, the state where the Super Bowl is, was close to legalizing sports betting in 2020, but it never happened. How closely are you watching new states attempting to legalize gambling? King: Our head lawyer once gave me a good piece of advice which was “the chances of passing any law is 50/50 until it actually passes.” It’s either going to pass or it’s not and I’ve taken that to heart. The way we look at the world is we think about the total number of states that are considering sportsbetting and we assume that some percentage of those are going to pass. It’s just hard to predict which ones are going to get it over the goal line. We are confident that you’re going to see a number of states pass it this year, we just don’t know which ones. MarketWatch: The four states with the highest populations: California, Texas, New York and Florida have not legalized sports betting yet, do you see those states as game-changers for your business? King: We certainly see every new state as a market opportunity, and obviously the bigger the state the bigger the market opportunity. But, the real change is what is already happening. Sportsbetting is becoming part of the narrative around sports. It’s embedded in how we talk about sports and even in those big states it’s a bit of a when — not if — question because people are understanding the size of scope of the illegal market and the fact that it’s just common sense legislation to try and put it out of business. I don’t necessarily view them as game-changers because the reality is we are already in the middle of the game. Certainly a big state will accelerate things. Best sports betting record. A Recognized Leader And Trusted Name In Sports Handicapping Since 1971. Best Sports Betting Record by Doc's Sports. Doc's Sports was founded by Doc back in 1971 and is one of the few services that have been able to withstand the test of time. The company has always followed three main principles of hard work, honesty, and enjoyment. Doc is still the president of the company and has the final say in every selection that Doc's Sports releases. Even though Doc had the best sports betting record in the nation for 19 years running, he has still run the company with the same principles he started with nearly four decades ago. Any game can win or lose in the most unreal way and over the course of time; a gambler will experience his fair share on both ends. Most handicapping services like to promote their selections by titling them, "Game of the Year." Many wonder what exactly this means. In essence it should be the strongest selection that your handicapper will release during the season. There should one be one game like this each season and a solid handicapper should be able to hit a play like this at least 70 percent of the time. You may ask why is this percentage not 100 percent? That is because no game is a lock and one handicapper cannot predict turnovers, fouls, or officiating in a game. Your handicapper may be in the right side but the before mentioned variable may offset this and turn a win into a loss. Nationwide, the best sports betting record over the years has been Doc's Sports Big Ten Game of the Year. This is the only 8-unit selection Doc's Sports puts out during the football season and is a must have for any big game hunter. This selection alone put Doc's Sports on map, as it won 19 years in a row from 1975 thru 1993. During the heyday of our success, this game would consistently move the line seven to 10 points depending on which side Doc was on. Numerous gamblers from around the world would consistently bet five figures on this selection and for 19-straight years would cash their ticket. When you hear the words, "Game of the Year" always be cautions as it has lost a little of its luster with so many handicappers popping up on the Internet. Many companies make up streaks and claim that a game cannot lose, that it is a lock. In reality there is no such thing and the advisory board and Doc's Sports would never make such a claim. Also one should avoid handicappers that release Game of the Year plays every weekend, as one should question how strong a play is if one is released every week. The team at Doc's Sports releases just one Game of the Year (8-unit pick) this season and these are truly some of the strongest selections you will find on the Internet. The highlight still continues to be Doc's Sports Big 10 Game of the Year. Be on the lookout for this play during the football season and best of luck. Pick: SB Tied After 0-0 YES -140 Start: February 7, 2021 @ 6:30 PM Expert: Alan Harris Offered at: BookMaker Analysis: In a game where the point spread has stayed right around a field goal since the opener, one could reasonably expect that this game will be tied at some point after 0-0. There could be a feeling out process early in the game where both teams go down and get field goals on their opening drive or we could see an opening like we saw in the NFC Championship game where Tampa landed the first punch to take a 7-0 lead before the Packers answered back and tied the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter. We like this one to be high scoring, especially late but we don’t see it being a blowout either way so we’re going to lay the short price that we’ll see a tie score after 0-0 on Sunday night. ***Note: Most, if not all books grade this prop after the conversion attempt. Example being if TB leads 6- 0 and KC scores a TD, the game is not considered tied until after the conversion attempt. If KC scores on the conversion, NO would still be winning the wager at that point. If KC were to miss the extra point, the YES would be graded a winner at that point*** Read More Read Less.

10 Greatest Sports Betting Wins of all time (3 of 3) Marginless. May 4, 2018 · 8 min read. We’ve all seen it, the smug Facebook post, or the retweeted betting slip with a huge profit from a tiny stake. Usually it’s “just” a few hundred dollars, but there have been some truly incredible bets down the years. There are a lot of similarities between betting on sports and actually playing sports. Luck is important, but ultimately you need skill to win consistently. The world of sport betting has its stars too. Some were very lucky, but most achieved their success through careful analysis and risk assessment. Here are 10 greatest and most memorable sports betting wins of all time. The world’s biggest known accumulator win came in March 2011 in the UK, when plumbing engineer Steve Whiteley managed to win a staggering £1.45 million from a noble £2 bet. Whiteley, from Tawton in Devon, selected six winners on the Exeter Tote Jackpot from a choice of horse race meets across the UK and Ireland. His accumulator consisted of Semicolon (2/1), Black Phantom (12/1), Ammunition (16/1), Mr Bennett (16/1), Lundy Sky (5/1), and Lupita (12/1). It does not come more perfect than 60-year-old fertilizer salesman Fred Craggs from Yorkshire, UK who won £1 million from a small 50p bet. Craggs placed an 8-fold accumulator with William Hill and his selections came from horse race meets scheduled across the globe. Bizarrely, Craggs was not even aware he had become a millionaire until he visited the same bookmaker to place another bet. The UK might be renowned for its massive sports accumulator wins but the US can also deliver a big winner every now and again too. An anonymous punter from Las Vegas won $305,000 from a $5 parlay bet on a selection of basketball matches with William Hill back in March 2016. The punter backed a selection of college teams on the Saturday and Sunday, whilst also selecting NBA teams Detroit Pistons and Golden State Warriors to win on the Saturday. This left him needing Kansas to win on the Monday which they did. Boom. November 2011 will remain one etched in the darkest reaches of the memories of UK bookmakers. It was a month when one weekend saw the vast number of favorites win their game leaving the bookies licking their wounds. The biggest payout was suffered by William Hill. A better living in a tiny village on the island of Malta placed an audacious 19-team accumulator. It was only an 80p bet. The better will forever be indebted to former Liverpool full back Glen Johnson who bagged a winning goal 3 minutes from time to seal a win for the Reds against Chelsea and deliver the six-figure win for the lucky bet placer. The odds are often skewed by passionate fans who’ll bet on their team no matter what. Sometimes, it pays off for them though. In 2011, one anonymous baseball fan bet $250 that the St. Louis Cardinals would make the World Series at odds of 500. This person then bet another $125 that they would win the World Series at 999 in odds. The Cardinals hardly looked impressive at the time of the bet, but soon started winning games at a surprisingly consistent rate. They ended the year as the most unlikely World Series champions and the fan picked up $375,000 in return for his faith. 28 September 1996 was an infamous day at Ascot racecourse in England. Franki Dettori was a popular jockey and a favorite with many punters, although one person who didn’t agree about his chances that day was Dettori himself. Interviewed before the first of his seven races, Dettori said that it was possible he could maybe win two of them. Many punters bet on Dettori anyway, including Darren Yates who put down £67.58 and decided to combine all seven of his races into a single bet that Dettori would win them all. Yates was a struggling businessman with a small carpentry business so needed a change of fortune. After place the bet, Dettori went off to play football with his friends and lost the game 4–0. Thinking it wasn’t his day, he then went to check on Dettori’s races and discovered that Dettori had won all seven. There were many winners that day at Ascot but no one earned more than Yates who picked up £550,823. Mick Gibbs is a roofer by profession, constructing and repairing roofs across Staffordshire in England. That’s not his only skill however. Gibbs also has an eye for winning accumulator bets. His first big win came in 1999 when he bet £2.50 and correctly predicted nine football games across Europe. That earned him £157,000. That’s small change compared to his next big win however. In 2001, Gibbs bet 30 pence to predict the winners of 15 football games across Europe and was given odds of 1,666,666. The first 14 games went exactly as Gibbs predicted so everything now depended on a Champions League match in which Bayern Munich would need to beat Valencia. The game ended in penalties. The last kick of the game was from Valencia defender Mauricio Pellegrino, but the moment the ball landed in the hands of Bayern Munich’s goalkeeper, Gibbs was £500,000 richer. Not bad for a 30 pence stake. H orse racing was once again the sport of choice for one anonymous punter who secured an £823,000 win from a £19 accumulator bet. The odds were high but the larger bet stake allowed the individual to win such a high amount. The lucky winner was from the UK county of Leicestershire and bet on a 5-fold from a selection of horse racing meets back in April of this year. The bet remains the largest ever win paid out by bookmaker Coral. B ill Walters used to be a professional poker player before using his skills as a professional sports punter instead. Over nearly four decades, Walters has bet more money than anyone else in history and continued a winning streak that has earned him hundreds of millions of dollars. He’s living proof that sport betting is a game of skill. Like poker, Walters explains that winning sports punters have to analyze information then calculate risk and potential profits. In an interview with CBS News, Walters described his biggest and most audacious bet of all time. The New Orleans Saints were playing the Indianapolis Colts at the Super Bowl in 2010 and the consensus was that New Orleans were the underdogs. Walters analyzed all the information he had and discovered that it actually favored New Orleans as the most likely winners. He looked at the odds, calculated the risk and potential profit then decided to bet big. Walters bet $3.5 million on the supposed underdogs and New Orleans didn’t let him down. They defeated the colts 31–17 to win their first ever Super Bowl. No one knows, but given that the Saints were the underdogs, we’re sure he made a pretty penny off this single bet.

Take Under 7 Receptions (-125) for Tyreek Hill in Super Bowl 55 (6:30p.m., Sunday, February 7 CBS) We have betting that Tyreek Hill will have less than receptions in Super Bowl 55. If he gets exactly 7 catches, this bet will be graded as a push and you will get your money bank. Hill had a monster game against Tampa Bay in the first game on 11/29 and you can bet Coach Bowles will make some adjustments for this game. Hill has only gone over 7 catches 5 times over out the 17 games he played this season. He will likely get a big play with his speed but remember that only counts as just one reception. NHL Picks (Today's Free Predictions, Tips, Parlays) Here you will find free NHL picks as well as parlays for all of today's games. All of our expert hockey predictions will be money lines or puck lines. Bookmark this page and check back for daily updates. NHL Picks. The NHL is the least wagered on league of the major American sports in both volume per game and through the course of the season. And while that may not be good for the business of sports betting advice, it is good for you, the bettor. You see, the less a game is bet the fewer opinions go into the line, the less accurate it will be, and the less the line is likely to change from the NHL opener. It's the same reason why hockey has lower limits when compared to say, basketball, football and even baseball. The hockey line has not been beaten and battered into shape. The sportsbooks don't make as much money on NHL betting because the volume is low. It's actually very possible the house will lose money on many games in a night, unlike NBA betting where it is nearly impossible to not be profitable if the sportsbook is booking for balanced action. But, sportsbooks have to offer NHL. They can't skip one of the big North American leagues. Canada may invade Vegas! But, that means opportunity for Doc's Sports to attack these raw lines and give you winning NHL plays! Free NHL Picks and Expert Predictions. You can find Free NHL picks throughout the Doc's Sports network including this free NHL predictions page; on our Doc's NHL Experts page; and on the Youtube channels of our expert NHL handicappers. Those ready to take advantage of our Free $60 in member selections can click the button at the top of this page and start receiving free expert selections. Get your NHL Picks Today, and Everyday! Doc's offers expert NHL picks today and every day of the hockey season! There are indeed nights when hockey isn't the most exciting thing on. In fact, there are many games that aren't televised nationally. That is a huge advantage for puckheads who are either at the game, have people at the game reporting back, or are viewing them on a league pass stream. To put it bluntly, the less interesting a game is to the general public the more interesting the lines are to NHL handicappers at Doc Sports. At Doc's we know don't give out a hockey pick because some of our bettors are hockey fans. We give out hockey picks because we need to make our clients money, and the NHL is one of the most lucrative sports to build your bankroll. So even if you don't like watching the NHL do yourself and your bankroll a favor and start betting it with help of Doc's NHL experts on your side today. Free NHL Money Line & Puck Line Picks. Unlike football, most NHL bettors are not going to make their hockey picks against the spread. There is indeed opportunity to bet the puck line and gain an advantage but we will primarily be betting teams to win straight up, also known as the money line. NHL Total Predictions. The pace of the game, as well as which games have unique matchups, is a key factor when handicapping hockey games. When pace and matchup formation is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NHL over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NHL game goal total. NHL total lines are usually between 5 and 6.5 goals. This means there are many pushes AKA ties with NHL total bets. The way to win betting NHL totals is by getting these picks in at the best possible price. Similar to the run line each of the over and under have a varying price depending on the odds of each occurring. You can also almost always anticipate the empty net goal since teams will pull their goalie the final two minutes of the game when they are down 1 or 2 goals which benefits the over in certain situations. Also when teams are tied late in the game they start playing for the OT point so you can expect them not to take too many chances which could also affect the total in close games. At Doc's we provide NHL expert picks intended to capitalize on where there is a pricing advantage. We also provide free hockey total selections that are intended to help bettors with their hockey handicapping legwork. NHL Parlay Picks. Parlay picks are considered degenerate bets usually placed by football fans. Parlaying NBA games often is a sucker bet and done without getting good prices or the best of key numbers. Hockey parlays are perhaps the easiest to gain an advantage. It is up there with baseball and may even be better in terms of capitalizing on good picks but more importantly, good pricing. Let's say you firmly believe a matchup is going to go a certain way. The game is not going to play out as the public expects because of the way a goalie handles this teams scoring threats! You can parlay the under and the underdog based on the perceived value. More importantly, if your sportsbook has a great price on the puck line as well as the total, or even a puck line price on another game, the payout can make this type of play advantageous over the long term. At Doc's our experts will offer a free hockey parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before these markets change. NHL Playoff Predictions. Once the regular season is over the NHL tends to pick up a lot of square action especially in large markets. Playoff hockey is all about how hot the goalies are since one hot goal tender can win a series for a mediocre team and this happens every single year so make sure you study up on the goalies. The fans often drive the prices as their teams take part in the playoffs. Bettors have much more time to make their NHL playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful Hockey playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NHL moneyline will move especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in our NHL pick. Getting the best price on your hockey picks versus the average price is the difference between having to hit 60% to earn or being profitable hitting as low as 50%. At Doc's we help you win, and win by betting smart.

Stream all the fights broadcast LIVE RIGHT HERE — don’t miss a single second of face-punching action! Volkov’s straight up moneyline is currently holding a favored cost of -200, with a winning $100 bet paying out $150 altogether. Sure, Alexander Volkov has alternated wins and losses in his last-five appearances, which starts to raise consistency questions, but he has still won eight out of his last ten matches. He’s also tougher than a $2 steak. Vitaly Minakov caught him way back in 2013, and then Derrick Lewis scored that bonkers comeback knockout back in 2018. Other than that though, Volkov’s chin has held up. It makes sense for the oddsmakers to view him as the more trustworthy option to get the dub here. The truth is that yes, the longtime kickboxing/MMA veteran has been winning lately, but you never really know what you’re going to get with him. Overeem is MMA’s box of chocolates. With that being said, this fight would feel every bit of 50/50, except for the fact that Volkov holds the advantage in the durability department — and the chin is king at heavyweight. UFC MMA odds, lines, picks and betting tips. By Joe Williams February 6, 2021 7:09 am. By Joe Williams | February 6, 2021 7:09 am. Overeem (47-18) is a veteran who always puts on a good show. This will be his fourth consecutive headliner event. He is coming off a fifth-round KO/TKO against Augusto Sakai Sept. 5, 2020 at this very same venue. In fact, it was his seventh straight fight which ended via KO/TKO, with four wins and three losses during the span. Since arriving at the highest level of MMA back on Dec. 30, 2011 in UFC 141’s main event against Brock Lesnar , 16 of his 19 fights ended by way of KO/TKO, with nine wins via knockout. Overeem has won three times via decision with no losses when the judges were involved, but that’s a rarity. You never need to worry about the submission with Overeem. Volkov (32-8) enters the octagon with a 4.76 to 3.71 significant strikes landed per minute advantage, although he is slightly behind Overeem at 64.14 to 58.98 in significant strikes-accuracy percentage. Volkov is coming off a KO/TKO of his own, taking care of Walt Harris Oct. 24, 2020 in Round 2 at UFC 254. He has four KO/TKO results (3-1) across his past six bouts overall. This will be a brawl, and there is a more than good chance it ends like so many others for these two, with someone getting knocked out. Ferreira (17-2) puts his solid record on the line against the UFC veteran Dariush (19-4-1) in an intriguing fight early on the main card. Ferreira checks in with a two-inch reach advantage, while leading 5.07 to 3.98 in significant strikes landed per minute. However, the Iranian fighter Dariush is much more pinpoint, posting a 49.56 significant strikes-accuracy percentage to just 36.56 for Ferreira. Dariush is slightly better on the ground numbers, too, ahead 1.75 to 1.04 in takedown average and 32.73 to 27.27 in takedown-accuracy percentage. Ferreira is unbeaten across his past six fights, including a Round 2 submission against Anthony Pettis at UFC 246 Jan. 18, 2020 in his last bout. Three of his past six fights and six of his last 10 at the UFC level have finished inside the distance. The southpaw Dariush is also on a roll, winning five straight bouts. In his most recent fight, he claimed a Round 1 KO/TKO against Scott Holtzman in this very same facility Aug. 8, 2020. He has had four straight fights finish inside the distance, including two KO/TKO wins and a pair of victories via submission. Diego Ferreira vs. Beneil Dariush: Betting odds, predictions and picks. Manny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman: Betting odds, expert pick, how to bet on the fight. Manny Pacquiao (61-7-2, 39 KOs) and Keith Thurman (29-0, one no-contest, 22 KOs) will clash on Saturday night for Thurman's WBA (super) welterweight title at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. And when two highly-regarded gladiators prepare for combat in a fight like this, there are bets to be made. So, let's take a closer look at Manny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman. Manny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman odds, expert pick. Boxing's only eight-division world champion returns for the second time in 2019. He fought in January and dominated Adrien Broner to win by a lopsided decision. The senator from the Philippines showed up to the Errol Spence Jr.-Mikey Garcia fight in March with many thinking he was going to challenge the winner. After Spence won, Pacquiao stepped inside the ring at the request of Spence, who was pushing for the fight. However, Pacquiao shifted course and decided to take on Thurman, instead. Thurman made a triumphant return to the ring a week after Pacquiao beat Broner and defeated a game Josesito Lopez by majority decision. In the lead up to Saturday's showdown, both Pacquiao and Thurman have said they can finish the other. But their recent history suggests not to expect it to occur. Pacquiao only has one stoppage win in his last 11 victories and that was a seventh-round TKO win over Lucas Matthysse last July. Before then, it was November 2009 — in perhaps the Flipino icon's best performance — when he destroyed Miguel Cotto. Thurman hasn't put anyone away since he defeated Luis Collazo in their July 2015 contest. Prior to that, "One Time" had 11 of his 14 victories coming via stoppage. For Pacquiao, a win over Thurman would mean a couple of things. One, it would show that even at 40-years-old, Pacquiao is still one of the best 147-pound fighters in the world in a sport deemed a young man's game. Secondly, a win would keep his hopes alive of luring Floyd Mayweather Jr. out of retirement to avenge his May 2015 loss, which Pacquiao blamed on an injured shoulder. If Mayweather stays retired, then a unification bout against the winner of Spence (IBF champion) vs. Shawn Porter (WBC titlist) or a crack at WBO titleholder Terence Crawford later in 2019 or early 2020 could be on the table. For Thurman, defeating Pacquiao would put him back in the position and spot the 30-year-old felt he never lost, as quite arguably the best welterweight in the world. It would also give him the career-defining win he's been looking for. Doubt has crept into people's minds because of how he looked against Lopez and his failure to put him away, but that was coming off a 22-month layoff due to an elbow surgery and hand injury. Thurman has repeatedly called 2019 his "comeback year." The saying doesn't mean anything if he can't beat Pacquiao. To do so, Thurman needs to fight like he did when he beat Danny Garcia in his last bout before the layoff. He has to keep the fight at a distance, use his footwork, throw power shots and keep his foot on the gas pedal. Thurman put on the brakes during the second half of the Garcia bout and it nearly cost him. Pacquiao's not going to give him Thurman a break. He will use his footwork to throw punches from all kinds of unique angles that Thurman has never seen before. It's imperative that Pacquiao gets off to a quick start. He can't let Thurman dictate the pace because then he'd have to fight from underneath at 40-years-old. It's hard to imagine Pacquiao not coming out the aggressor due to the comments Thurman made heading into Saturday night. Plus, Pacquiao has continuously been in marquee fights and knows not to let the moment get to him, while Thurman has never been in anything close to this magnitude. SN Pick: Manny Pacquiao. The boxing legend is going to notch his second win since he turned 40 in December and move on to another blockbuster bout, handing Thurman his first pro loss.
Manny Pacquiao Fight Odds. Despite being over 40 and semi-retired, Pacquiao remains one of boxing's biggest stars and best athletes. A Filipino icon, Pacquiao's rise to fame is partly due to the loyal Filipino fans who still fiercely support him today. With billions in revenue generated, and twelve major titles won, Pacman still has a passion for boxing. While there won't be many more - here is Pacquiao's next big fight. The boxing world is fortunate to still have him. Fans and bettors are ecstatic every time Pacquiao's fight odds are posted as his fights aren't just exciting, but a good way to earn coin. Pacquiao battled Keith Thurman for the WBA Welterwweight belt on July 20, 2019, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. The odds for Manny Pacquiao vs Conor McGregor have emerged and are now available. The Latest boxing odds refreshed on October 19, 2020: Congratulations to Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao who defeated Keith Thurman , via a split decision, to claim the WBA Welterwweight Championship. The win moves the amazing Ageless Warriors' career record to 62-7-2. Will Pacquiao Fight Mayweather? There’s been plenty of speculation as to whether or not there will be a second bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Junior . Both fighters are still fit enough to go a full twelve rounds, and they have been keeping their names in the media in one way or another, including various fight rumours. In late 2019, Floyd Mayweather was quoted as saying he “feels the time is right” for a rematch between himself and Pac-Man . In fact, Floyd has mentioned that he wants to fight twice in 2020 – once with Manny, and in another MMA crossover super fight with one of the most dangerous men in the octagon, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Certainly, when these men enter the ring, they’re defending themselves at all times . But it’s also worth remembering that everyone involved in these bouts does so for the sake of earning a paycheck. What is Manny Pacquiao's Next Fight? There’s been a wide range of rumours and speculation in terms of who Manny will square up against the next time he enters the ring. Some believe that he will focus strictly on domestic work in the Philippines if he doesn’t find an opponent that he can work with to create a big payday. As such, Floyd Mayweather Junior is one of the most obvious possibilities for his next bout. Interestingly, Manny has been linked on and off with the potential to fight against Gennady Golovkin . However, Golovkin has a notable size edge on Pacquiao, and GGG has been fighting against the likes of Canelo – in other words, the best of the best. GGG is one of the hardest hitting men in the business, so a match against Pacquiao could legitimately be dangerous and unfair. Perhaps the most logical potential bout for Manny would be one against Errol Spence Jr. Errol recently dealt with a horrible car crash and picked up a DUI along with a lengthy recovery period. Now that Errol is back in public, he’s looking for a fight to defend his WBC and IBF welterweight belts. Manny would find Errol a much more even battle, one that would give him the extra incentive of a potential championship belt. Other rumoured fighters for Manny’s next fight are Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter, Mikey Garcia, and Terence Crawford. Who is Manny Pacquiao? Manny Pacquiao is a record-breaking boxer who hails from the Philippines. He’s done so as an undersized fighter who somehow punches 50 pounds above his weight. Pretty much every part of his life story involves him beating the odds in one way or the other. He started out from a small, poor town in the Philippines and is now one of the most powerful men in the country. He’s set a record as the only champion across eight boxing divisions , and he’s the first in history to win a belt in four of eight glamour divisions – in his case, the flyweight, featherweight, lightweight, and welterweight divisions. He’s also the only boxer to be a champion across four decades, having won in the 1990s, 2000s, 2010s, and in 2020. There’s no combatant around the world who can claim his level of success. Unlike the vast majority of boxers, Manny has parlayed his success in the ring into a ridiculous number of ventures in areas outside of sports . He’s become a career politician, he’s recorded albums, and he’s appeared in nearly a dozen movies and has been a part of various TV shows, including documentaries and game shows. The Philippines is absolutely crazy about basketball, and the Pac-Man leveraged his fame and fortune to become part of the Philippines' professional league . Manny purchased a team, entered the draft like other players, and then was the coach and player on his own team. Incredibly, Manny ’s even developed enough influence to make political endorsements in the United States , including Jerry Brown of California and Duke Aiona in Hawaii. Where is Manny Pacquiao From? Born Emmanuel Dapridran Pacquiao on December 17th, 1978, in Kibawe, Bukidon of the Philippines , Manny grew up with six siblings. His dad split from the family when he was only six. At a young age, Manny was drawn to combat sports after watching great like Muhammad Ali and Bruce Lee. Pacquiao was undersized as a 16-year-old aspiring pro boxer, only 4’11” and 98 pounds, so he put weights in his socks to make the minimum demand for weights. Manny still won his first fight. How Manny Pacquiao Made His Money? Manny’s biggest windfall by far was his bout against Floyd Mayweather Jr. It’s estimated that the Pacman took home a paycheck worth $130 million for that fight alone . He’s drawn around $1.25 billion in ticket revenues from his 24 pay-per-view boxing bouts, including 4.6 pay-per-view television purchases for his Mayweather fight. Manny’s also been a part of countless endorsement deals around the world. He’s also deeply passionate about basketball, personally involving himself as a coach and owner. As a senator with the Philippine government, he’s also part of various business deals. He also attracts revenue through acting, TV hosting, and the music recording industry. What is Manny Pacquiao’s Net Worth? Manny’s net worth is estimated at around $220 million , although it’s estimated that he’s earned more than $500 million from fight purses and various worldwide promotions. Pacquiao’s family struggled with poverty when young, which makes his success story that much more notable. No doubt his family is now taken care of quite well. While Pacquiao isn’t at his competitive peak, he’s still a big enough celebrity in the boxing world and in the Philippines for another potential windfall through another super fight event. If he manages to gain momentum for a major bout that involves him and a pugilist who will exit retirement, his net worth could easily shoot up again. Who did Manny Pacquiao Date? Manny has been long married to Maria Geraldine Jamora , and the couple has five kids in the Philippines. Of course, this hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from churning. A celebrity as big as Pacquiao is often linked with many different romantic possibilities outside of marriage. Manny has been linked with a couple of stars back home , including Krista Ranillo and Ara Mina. As you’d imagine, these sort of rumours and innuendo have a negative effect on any marriage. However, despite it all, Manny and Maria remain married and committed to each other in their second decade of matrimony.
This is how they opened the odds in the bets for a possible fight between Pacquiao and Ryan García. Odds for the first bets for a possible fight between Manny Pacquiao and Ryan Garcia They opened with the Filipino as the favorite. This, despite the fact that it is still unknown when and where the confrontation would take place. That day he defeated by unanimous decision Keith thurman by split decision to win the LA welterweight belt AMB. He has currently sought to help the Philippines as a senator during the COVID-19 pandemic. It is also in negotiations with Golden Boy Promotions , which is the promoter of Ryan Garcia . This could be one of your last professional bouts looking to become the president of your country. Nevertheless, Eric Gomez , President of GBP , said that this fight “is not going to take place”, although different reports indicate that the negotiations are still ongoing.

How to Bet on Sports for Beginners: 12 Tips to Know. Suchat Pederson/The News Journal via USA TODAY NETWORK. Over the past few years, the emergence of daily fantasy sports has led to a renaissance for conventional sports betting. The anti-gambling stigma that existed for decades is fading in American popular culture, opening the door for a massive, multibillion-dollar legal sports betting industry to emerge. With sports betting now legal in many states, millions of sports fans will be looking to enter the betting market for the first time. But where do you begin if you’re unfamiliar with the terminology? Here’s an introduction into how to bet on sports. We’ll be adding to this series in the coming weeks. How to Bet on Sports for Beginners: 12 Tips. Use the links below to jump to each section. 1. Favorites vs. Underdogs. When the oddsmakers release a betting line on a game, the first thing they do is decide which team should be the favorite and which should be the underdog. The favorite is the team that is expected to win the game and will get a minus sign next to its odds, while the underdog is expected to lose and gets a plus sign. If the game is a toss-up, books will open it as a “pick” or “pick’em.” Click to return to table of contents . 2. Spreads. There are two main ways to bet on a favorite or an underdog. The first is the point spread, which is a bet on the margin of victory. A favorite “gives” points, while an underdog “gets” points. For example, say the Patriots are 7-point favorites (-7) against the Jets. If you bet on the Patriots, they need to win the game by 8 points or more for you to win your bet. If the Patriots win by 8 points or more, you “cover.” If the Patriots win by exactly 7 points, that is called a “push,” which means you get back the money you originally bet. If the Patriots win by 6 points or fewer (or lose the game straight-up), you lose your bet. Spreads are available for all sports, but they are predominantly used when betting on higher-scoring sports like football and basketball. 3. Moneylines. The second way to bet on a favorite or an underdog is on the moneyline. This is based solely on which team will win the game. Favorites are given a “minus” designation, such as -150, -200 or -500. If a favorite is -200, that means you have to risk $200 to win $100. If the favorite wins, you get $100, but if the favorite loses, you’re out $200. Because favorites are expected to win, you assume more risk when betting on them. Moneylines are available for all sports, but they are predominantly used when betting on lower-scoring sports like baseball, hockey and soccer. 4. Over/Unders (Totals) In addition to setting a line for the favorite and the underdog, oddsmakers will also set a total number of points scored in a game by both teams combined. This is called the total or over/under. Bettors can then wager on whether or not the game will go Over or Under the total. For example, an NBA game between the Celtics and Bulls might have a total of 215. You could either bet the Over 215 or the Under 215. If you bet the Over 215 and the total points scored end up being 216 or higher, you win your bet. If the total points scored are 214 or fewer, you lose. 5. What Is the -110 Number Listed Next to My Bet? The oddsmakers put a “tax” on every bet, which is typically called the “juice” or “vig” (short for “vigorish”). The juice is the commission you have to pay to the sportsbook for them to accept your wager. Say the Duke Blue Devils are -5 (-110) … that means if you want to bet on Duke as a 5-point favorite, you need to risk $110 to win $100. You always have to risk more on a favorite than you’d win on an underdog…otherwise, sportsbooks would be out of business. 6. How to Place a Bet. With legalized sports betting spreading across America, sports bettors have never had more options to take advantage of. To see if sports betting is legal where you live, check out our state-by-state tracker. Some of the biggest states that have legalized mobile wagering include Colorado, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana and West Virginia. The sportsbooks highlighted below are all trustworthy legal shops that take bets online.
Oregon breaks state sports activities betting information in January: $ 34.9 million. Oregon doesn't have a large sports betting market, but the state got off to an impressive start into 2021. In January, Oregon saw its highest ever sports betting handle. The January sports betting handle was $ 34.9 million. Sports betting was launched in Oregon in October 2019. Current State of Oregon Sports Betting. The January record was significant as the Oregon sports betting market had a few bad months in business. Oregon has had sports betting for almost a year and a half. Oregon only has one mobile betting platform. This app is called ScoreBoard and is operated by the Oregon Lottery. No other online provider can operate in the state. Oregon also has two retail sportsbooks in the state's tribal casino houses. University sports bets are not permitted in Oregon on the ScoreBoard app. This regulation, together with a below average and inadequate mobile platform, has restricted the state market. These facts make the January record remarkable. January sports betting records. The total of $ 34.9 million was the highest in Oregon sports betting history. The total for December was just under $ 27 million, the month-over-month increase was 29.5%. The January grip was the highest since Oregon launched mobile sports betting in October 2019. Oregon was $ 200,000 below its highest turnover ever. This is a very positive sign for Oregon state betting officials. Oregon's total sales for 2020 were $ 218.2 million, representing sales of $ 20.1 million. 2020 was the first full year for legal sports betting in Oregon, so year-round data is not available to compare. Basketball was the highest-stakes sport in January, followed by soccer. These two handles were $ 17.4 and $ 10.3 million, respectively. Soccer ($ 2.5 million), table tennis ($ 1.7 million), and hockey ($ 1.1 million) were the second highest grabs in the state. Oregon was the first state in America to report its January numbers. New Oregon House Bill. Oregon has a very limited sports betting market. Governor Kate Brown began changing the current sports betting market in Oregon. It did so by soliciting House Bill 2127's proposal. House Bill 2127 would make the Oregon Racing Commission the state's new sports betting regulator. This change would increase the number of operators across the state. Bettors would have the option of betting on other betting platforms in addition to the ScoreBoard app. The ScoreBoard app is a step behind many of the top betting companies in the US. ScoreBoard's monopoly did not force them to improve their product in any way. The ScoreBoard app would still be available in the state, but many bettors would likely turn away from the platform. In a single platform market, it is very surprising that the grip is increasing massively. That surge in Oregon gave House Bill 2127 a better chance because it shows lawmakers that a bigger market will pay dividends. ScoreBoard has had too many problems to keep the state bettors happy. There is a desire in Oregon for improved sports betting.
Virginia sports betting is live, adding to the state’s list of gambling opportunities. Posted: Jan 28, 2021 / 11:01 PM EST / Updated: Jan 29, 2021 / 12:27 PM EST. RICHMOND, Va (WRIC) — In a state where decades-long debates raged over legalizing varying forms of gambling, sports betting has added itself to Virginia’s ranks of risk opportunities. After FanDuel went live last week, advertisements have been pushed to consumers as additional competitive sports books launched. BetMGM, Draft Kings, Caesars and Rivers Casino Portsmouth all have approved permits according to the Virginia Lottery. The General Assembly passed a measure legalizing sports betting during the 2020 session, and less than one year later sports fanatics can get in on the action. The move is the latest green light for gambling in the Commonwealth over the last three decades. The Virginia Lottery went live in the late 1980s, Colonial Downs off-track betting first happened in the late 90s, and was later revived in gaming hubs like Rosie’s Gaming Emporium. Like other modes of gambling operations, sports books have guidelines to follow, as Mike Raffensburger with Fan Duel explained. “We have requirements, much like a bank does to know our customers. So in order to actually sign up and deposit to play on FanDuel, we require certain information like your address, the last four digits of your Social Security number, and we use other databases to sort of confirm your identity and that you are of age and legally allowed to place a gambling wager in the state of Virginia,” Raffensburger said. In Virginia, bets on in-state teams cannot be wagered on–a provision similar to several other states who have legalized sports betting. Many may be interested in placing bets, but Brenda Hurt in Richmond said she will keep her money close. “I mean, they [sports fans] might want to [wager], but I can’t tell you who because I know I don’t want to. I just watch the game,” Hurt said. “I need my money. I’ve got to pay bills, I can’t do nothing with gambling and giving away my money free,” she said. Full-fledged casino projects are also in the works across Virginia, including the potential one may pop up in Richmond, which is still under consideration. For those with gambling addictions, resources are available to you, including the Virginia Council on Problem Gambling. The VCPG toll free hotline is 1-888-532-3500. Copyright 2021 Nexstar Inc. Sports Betting, I-Gaming, & Recreational Marijuana: Will Lawmakers make it all legal in 2021? Posted: Jan 1, 2021 / 05:17 PM EST / Updated: Jan 4, 2021 / 03:32 PM EST. HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) — State lawmakers are headed back to the Capitol in five days. They’ll focus on balancing a two-year $20-billion budget. Lawmakers are considering revenue generators to help fill expected budget holes. Top of mind: online gaming and adult use of marijuana, which combined could generate jobs and $100 million a year. Sen. Kevin Kelly, the Republican Senate Minority Leader, says the budget deficits are massive — “We’re facing down a $4 billion problem this isn’t going to fix that.” Legalizing Marijuana. Lawmakers are considering allowing adults to smoke pot legally. “There is something about personal responsibility in this country that we take very seriously,” adds Representative Matt Ritter, the incoming Democratic House Speaker. In Connecticut, small amounts of Marijuana are decriminalized. Medical marijuana has been around for nearly a decade. There are four licensed growers, eighteen dispensaries, and an estimated 48,000 patients who have medical cards to legally purchase medicinal marijuana. Those who want to use it recreationally drive 60-miles north to Massachusetts where it is legal. Sen. Martin Looney says allowing reformed felons to have permits to sell and a labor peace agreement protecting union jobs are caveats to passage. “If those provisions are met, then I think the passage of legalization of marijuana has a strong chance,” Looney said. But Republicans see those as controversial provisions. The non-profit Tax Foundation estimates that in its first year, passing adult use of cannabis could generate $41 million in sales. What about drug abuse and regulation? Representative Vin Candelora, the Republican House Minority Leader explains, “people that are vaping 90% THC, it’s led to a lot of other health issues. We need to have these conversations.” If recreational marijuana is rejected, the process to amend the constitution begins. With a supermajority vote by the legislature, residents would see a ballot question in 2022. Short of that, not until 2024, after each chamber separately approves the measure. Republicans want the “right of referendum”. Also, a constitutional change. Voters would start a statewide petition for lawmakers to repeal the current law. This is the process voters in Massachusetts used to make legalized marijuana the law of the land. Online Gaming & Sports Betting. Place your bets on whether online gaming and sports betting will be allowed. Any new gaming law requires the Governor to negotiate an amendment to the Compact made with the state’s two Native American tribes decades ago. And then there are private sector groups – like Sportech – that want a piece of the gambling pie. Representative Candelora believes, “They need to have a seat at the table along with our tribes.” Online gaming and sports betting could generate an estimated $35 million a year according to lobbyists for Sportech. But Native American tribes say it’s their exclusive right. If violated, they won’t pay $250 million in slot revenue. The incoming speaker says whomever the licensed operator is – he wants to require sportsbooks in the big cities with a cut of the revenue to help mayors pay down debt. Representative Ritter explains, “They would offer to open up for or five sportsbooks in the cities only. downtown Hartford near the XL Center you’d have a sportsbook with 30 TVs, you’d be able to place bets, gaming bets that become a destination.” The state’s quasi-public agency, the Connecticut Lottery, is also in discussions to operate the I-Lottery section of this gaming program.
