Maybe they’ll have to start borrowing for it. And, for a select few, it will get worse. It’s already gotten worse for hundreds of people statewide since Illinois legislators approved a massive gaming expansion a year and a half ago, introducing legal sports wagering to a state that’s already packed with more places to gamble than Las Vegas. The COVID-19 pandemic has made matters even worse, according to Luke, a Chicago-area problem gambler who was able to get out of the game nine years ago. My relationships with my family and whoever I was dating, it just got out of control. I was lying, I was stealing, I was doing all these crazy things.” As sports betting has been brought out of the shadows into everyday life, counselors say their challenge now is removing the stigma around seeking treatment for addiction — and they say they’re making progress through increased awareness. That’s been boosted with the help of $7 million set aside in the state’s gambling expansion law in grants for treatment centers, which have used a lot of that money to bolster advertising. If you ever see “PK” or “pick” next to a team, it means there’s no spread and you can bet on who will win, no matter what the score is. Moneylines. Let’s take that same example above but use moneylines: The team with a minus symbol is the favorite, and the number is how much money you would need to bet to win $100. In this case, you would have to bet $200 on the Eagles in order to win an additional $100. Note that you can bet any amount you want, but those numbers are always calculated and posted the same way, either in how much money you would need to wager to win $100 or how much money you could win by wagering $100. If you’re betting on something like the team who will win the Super Bowl in the future, you might see it look like this: New England Patriots — 3/1 Baltimore Ravens — 5/1 Kansas City Chiefs — 8/1. If you were betting on the Patriots and their 3/1 odds, you would win $3 for every $1 you spend. So if you bet $50 on the Pats and they ended up winning the Super Bowl, you’d win $150 (plus your original wager) back.
Michigan launches online sports betting, casino games Friday. LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Online sports betting and casino games will start in Michigan at noon Friday, an expansion of options for gamblers who now wager through offshore sites. State regulators have authorized licenses for all three Detroit casinos and seven of the dozen tribes with “Class III” casinos. Additional operator and platform provider licenses are expected to be approved in coming weeks. Michigan Gaming Control Board Executive Director Richard Kalm this week called the launch a “new era,” saying it will give casinos an additional way to engage with customers and provide state and local governments with extra tax revenue. Casinos began accepting in-person sports wagers in March but had to wait for the creation of a licensing system for online operations, which have taken on increased significance amid state-ordered shutdowns or capacity restrictions at casinos to curb COVID-19. “It’s clear to us that there’s incredible demand among Michiganders for at least sports betting. But my expectation is that online casino and in due course poker will be equally popular,” said BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt. His company’s app — previously launched in 10 states — is connected to MGM Resorts, including the Detroit casino and hotel. Greenblatt said the state’s 8.4% online sports betting tax is “very sensible,” allowing licensed operators to compete with offshore sites. “You’ve got a group of players who have long been betting offshore. We would like to see them bring their play back on shore,” he said. He said there will be minimal if any “cannibalization” of business from players who typically visit casinos but instead will play on the internet. “We see an expansion of the market — so new players coming in to enjoy our product,” Greenblatt said, adding that MGM, like other casinos, will incentivize online gamblers to redeem rewards points by visiting onsite. Casinos offering online games like blackjack will pay a tax of between 20% and 28%, depending on their amount of adjusted gross receipts. Net new annual revenues to the state and Detroit, which has commercial casinos, are projected to total $18.6 million and $13.7 million respectively, according to the Michigan Department of Treasury. The money will go to the state’s school aid fund, which covers public schools. It also will be earmarked to a state fund that compensates first responders for lost wages and medical benefits if they get cancer from fighting fires. Those who like to wager against the boxing odds know that it hasn't been a winning proposition lately to bet against Manny Pacquiao, who has plowed through a number of weight divisions to become the biggest thing in boxing. At some point in the near future, he would like to match up with Floyd Mayweather, who seems a little reluctant, but for now he has to take care of things against Shane Mosley, who has been one of the more well-known fighters in the business since first ascending to main event status. MANNY PACQUIAO (52-3-2, 38 KO's), the -900 favorite to beat Shane Mosley in the boxing odds, may be looking for a fight with Floyd Mayweather in the future, but he has to worry about a three-division champion first. He has come a long way since turning pro at only 106 pounds, and he has gone up as the junior middleweight (154-pound) class, though he is now fighting as a welterweight. Pacquiao, who comes out of the Philippines, won his first eleven fights, then was stopped in three rounds against someone named Rustico Torrecampo, who will basically become the answer to a trivia question. He clearly learned from those experiences, and eventually progressed to the point where he won the WBC flyweight title in December 1998 by knocking out Chatchai Sasakul, but lost it in his second defense when he was knocked out in three rounds by Medgoen Singsurat. It was then that Pacquiao made his bold move, as he challenged the boxing odds by skipping past 115 and 118 entirely to fight as a super bantamweight (122 pounds), and this seemed to be well-suited for him, as he romped to the IBF title by stopping Lehlo Ledwaba in what was his first fight in the U.S. he didn't go past four title defenses. In November of 2003, this time as a featherweight, he stopped Marco Antonio Barrera in eleven rounds, in a fight where he was virtually dominant. Then came the great fight against Juan Manuel Marquez, for the featherweight crown, and even though he floored Marquez three times in the opening round, thrilling those who laid a price with him in the boxing odds, he let Marquez back into the fight, and in a thrilling affair, the fight was judged to be a draw. Pacquiao wasn't done moving up; he went to 130 pounds but was unsuccessful in his first attempt, being outclassed for the most part by Erik Morales. But after Pac Man beat Hector Velasquez for the WBC 130-pound title, he went on to beat Morales twice by knockout. Then he beat Barrera again, in October 2006, grabbing himself a nice payday. He had a rematch with Marquez, with his WBC title on the line, and in a decision that was once again very, very tight, the difference was one point on one judges' scorecard, with Pacquiao the winner. With all of that business taken care of, Pacquiao decided to seek a title in the lightweight division, and was shutting out David Diaz, the WBC's 135-pound champion, before stopping him in the ninth round. Pacquiao, seeking another payday, took on Ricky Hatton two years ago and destroyed him, with the IBO welterweight title on the line. Miguel Angel Cotto offered more spirited resistance, but he simply didn't have the talent, and was eventually wide open for Pacquiao, who stopped him in the final round. A decision win over Joshua Clottey was uneventful, and his last fight, a one-sided decision over outgunned Antonio Margarito, turned out the way most savvy bettors of the boxing odds anticipated; let's see if he carries the role of favorite well against Mosley. Mosley was scheduled to face Andre Berto on Jan. 30, but Berto had to pull out as well, which set up this fight of two legendary boxers. This fight will take place next Saturday from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas , Nevada on Pay Per-View. Floyd Mayweather Jr. (40-0, 25 KO’s) Strengths: Mayweather is unbeaten for a reason. He is considered by many as the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world. Pacquiao is also in that discussion, which makes their planned fight being scrapped a major loss for the boxing world. Mayweather’s speed and strength combination is as great as the sport has ever seen. Mayweather has fought in multiple weight classes and succeeded at each. His smart style of fighting has allowed him to beat some of the best in the world. Weaknesses: Mayweather has been criticized for having relatively uneventful fights and toying with his opponents when he could finish them off. Mayweather takes pride in his image and looks to take as little damage as possible in the fights, which could be why his fights are eventful. Former IBF and WBA Welterweight Champion Antonio Margarito of Mexico is back this Saturday, September 2 nd when he takes on Carson Jones of Oklahoma City in Chihuahua, Mexico. The 10-round junior middleweight bout can be seen live on BEIN Sports Espanol and Azteca TV. Margarito last fought on August 13 th when he beat Ramon Alvarez by a 10-round split decision. Jones was last in action in November when he beat Ben Hall by a sixth-round TKO. Margarito returned to the ring after a four-and-a-half-year layoff in March of 2016 when he beat Jorge Paez Jr. by a close 10-round unanimous decision. Margarito vs Jones Betting Odds. The former champ underwent surgery on several occasions to repair the damage and then took on Cotto in a rematch for his second straight loss. Margarito has to get past Jones if he has any chance of becoming a top-10 contender again and he’d also have to pass eye tests if he hopes to receive a license to fight in the U.S. There are many fans and boxing people who feel Margarito shouldn’t be allowed to compete anymore after being found guilty of illegal hand wraps before his 2009 TKO loss to former champion Shane Mosley. Margarito was banned for a year and then fought three more times before hanging up his gloves. However, it’s widely believed that Margarito had been wrapping his hands illegally and hardening them with plaster of Paris for most of his career until getting caught. Since the scandal, Margarito’s power has been noticeably absent and his hand speed more or less disappeared. Margarito stands 5-feet-11-inches tall and has a reach of 73 inches. He’s boxed 297 rounds since 1994 and his current knockout percentage is 55 per cent. His losses have been at the hands of Cotto, Pacquiao, Mosley, Paul Williams, Daniel Santos, Rodney Jones, Larry Dixon and Victor Lozova. However, he has a pretty good chin as Cotto and Mosley were the only two to stop him. His biggest wins were over Cotto, Sergio Martinez, Danny Perez, David Kamau, Frankie Randall, Antonio Diaz, Andrew Lewis, Hercules Kyvelos, Kermit Cintron (twice) and Joshua Clottey. The 31-year-old Jones has a record of 40-11-3 with 30 kos. He turned pro back in 2004 and has 295 rounds under his belt since then. Jones has fought some decent opposition over the years such as Kell Brook, Alfonso Gomez, Roberto Garcia, Freddy Hernandez, Brian Rose, and Jesus Soto Karass. But the problem is that he lost to all of them. However, he did manage to stop Rose in the first round in their first meeting in February of 2015. He has a hard time when he steps up in class, which is what he will be doing against Margarito. Jones is 5-feet-10-inches tall with a 72-inch reach and has pretty good power as his current knockout ratio stands at 54 per cent. He has a decent chin as well as he’s been stopped just three times in his 11 losses. Jones has been a tough opponent for everybody he’s faced and he often surprises his opponents with his speed and power. However, his main problem throughout his career has been a lack of consistency. He can ban an elite boxer one night and basically a journeyman or Grade B opponent the next time out. Prediction… Margarito has done okay since his comeback even though he’s lost some power and speed. You never know what to expect from Jones and that’s what makes this a tough prediction. Miguel Cotto vs Antonio Margarito Betting Odds and Preview. One of the most anticipated boxing matches of the year is set to take place at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Dec. 3 rd when champion Miguel Cotto of Puerto Rico takes on Mexico’s Antonio Margarito in a WBA Super World Middleweight title fight. There’s a lot of bad blood going into this fight due to the controversy that surrounded their first meeting in 2008. Margarito beat the previously undefeated Cotto buy an 11 th -round TKO in July of that year for the WBA welterweight title and busted up his face in the process. However, he was caught cheating six months later before he left the dressing room in his bout against Shane Mosley. Mosley’s trainer noticed something wrong with the way Margarito’s hands were wrapped and after investigating his hands it was revealed that he has a the hardening substance known as plaster of paris on them. Boxing fans immediately thought back to Margarito’s fight against Cotto and figured Cotto was on the end of the hardening substance in their bout and that’s why his face was cut, bruised, and swollen so badly in their fight. Since Margarito was caught cheating he took beatings from Mosley and was stopped in the ninth round and then Manny Pacquiao in a 12-round unanimous decision, causing many fans to accuse him of cheating in many of his bouts until he was finally caught. Margarito was suspended for a year and Cotto has promised to get his revenge on Dec. 3 rd . However, this fight was close to being called off as Margarito had to pass an eye exam due to a fractured orbital bone that he suffered from Pacquiao. He finally passed it and the bell is set to ring on Saturday night. The first fight was one of the best in recent memory and this one should be even better with all of the storylines and drama that surround it. It’s no secret that these two guys don’t like each other and that’s usually a good sign for boxing fans. The 31-year-old Cotto will enter the ring with a 36-2 record with 29 knockouts while the 33-year-old Margarito comes in at 38-7 with 27 KOs. Cotto’s other loss was a 12 th -round TKO defeat to Pacquiao in 2009. This bout will be fought at a catch weight of 153 lbs. and Margarito has a four-inch height advantage as he’s 5-11 as well as a six-inch reach advantage. Both fighters have a lot to prove here as Margarito wants to show the world that he doesn’t need hardened gloves to beat Cotto while Cotto wants to prove the opposite. Of course, if Cotto beats him in the rematch here most fans will automatically assume Margarito’s gloves were padded in their first fight. Cotto still has to be cautious though and he can’t afford to go all out as soon as the opening bell rings. He needs to take his time and box methodically while going after Margarito when the opportunity presents itself. He can’t afford to leave himself open and needs to keep his emotions in check. Margarito has shown over the years that he can take a punch as well as anybody. His only KO loss came to Mosley. Margarito’s recent eye surgeries could be a factor in this fight as the referee might jump in and stop it if he’s taking a lot of punishment. Betting Odds. Prediction. (WAVY) — The Virginia Lottery Board announced the formal approval of initial regulations on casino gaming in the Commonwealth as well as providing an update on the recent launch of mobile sports betting. The Virginia Lottery and its Board were assigned the casinos, licensing, and regulation of mobile sports in the 2020 General Assembly session. As for casinos, the approved emergency regulations apply to proposed land-based casinos in Bristol, Danville, Norfolk, and Portsmouth — which were endorsed by voters in those localities in the November 2020 elections. A fifth casino in Richmond has also been proposed and is pending a public referendum in November 2021. The 2020 casino legislation required adoption of an initial regulatory framework by April 2021. The next steps include the Lottery refining regulations including an opportunity for public and stakeholder participation . Additionally, as part of the pre-certification process prior to the referendum, the Lottery conducted a preliminary assessment of the financial viability of each city’s preferred casino partner and the partner’s experience in operating casinos in a regulated environment. The Lottery says that as applications for casino operating licenses are submitted, it will conduct a comprehensive review of casino operators — including criminal history and financial reviews of designated gaming operators. Regulatory requirements also will specify internal controls, on-site security, and surveillance requirements. “The Lottery’s role as regulator is based on its three-decade track record as a respected and trusted gaming authority in the Commonwealth,” said Kevin Hall, executive director of the Virginia Lottery. “The Lottery’s professional staff and our Board will work to protect the public interest by ensuring the integrity of casino gaming through the strict enforcement of the law and our regulations.” The approved emergency casino regulations are posted here . On Jan. 21, live, legal sports wagering launched in the state and includes five approved permit holders, and additional permits are expected to be awarded soon. Lottery officials also say that total profits during the six-month period were up more than 20 percent from the previous year for a total of $349.7 million. By law, all Virginia Lottery profits go to K-12 public education in the Commonwealth. Sales were driven by a variety of factors officials say, including the July 1, 2020 launch of online iLottery games. Games like Mega Millions, Powerball, Cash4Life, and more all-new, instant-win games were included in the online options.
