UFC 109 Matchups: Couture vs. Coleman Odds & Picks. Couture vs. Coleman. The main event of UFC 109 is a fight between two current UFC Hall of Famers as Randy Couture faces off with Mark Coleman. Unanimous decision loss to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 102 on Aug. 29, 2009. Second round TKO loss to Brock Lesnar at Nov. 15, 2008. Mark Coleman (16-9): Strengths : Coleman is a former UFC champion back in the old days of the sport in the late 1990’s. Coleman is a strong guy that likes to push the pace of fights and hope that he has better conditioning than his opponents. After taking three years off from fighting, he returned to the UFC in 2009 and in both fights he has taken a lot of punishment. But, also in both fights he tired his opponents to exhaustion. In his win over Stephan Bonnar at UFC 100, Bonnar dominated the first round, but tired himself trying to finish Coleman, which allowed Coleman to win the final two rounds with his persistence. Weaknesses : Coleman doesn’t seem to have a lot of fundamental skills and just relies on being able to last longer than his opponents with toughness and cardio. Coleman will have trouble with that against Couture, who shouldn’t tire during the fight. Coleman also lacks a lot of proper training, as he does most of his work on his own, while Couture runs his own camp and is surrounded by a lot of talent day-in and day-out. Ultimate Rivalries: Chuck Liddell vs. Randy Couture. Last time out we launched Ultimate Rivalries by taking a look back at the heated rivalry that erupted between Tito Ortiz and Ken Shamrock during the early days of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and for our latest instalment we are taking a look back at a rivalry that was born purely out of competition – the three-fight series between ‘The Iceman’ Chuck Liddell and ‘The Natural’ Randy Couture. These two men were polar opposites inside the Octagon – Liddell was a knockout artist with dynamite in his fists, while Couture was a no-nonsense wrestler who would grind you down, beat you up and break your spirit. It was the ultimate clash of styles that produced history-making moments and help the UFC continue its growth from underground pariah to mainstream sports sensation. Roots Of A Rivalry. A stand-out amateur wrestler, Randy Couture entered the world of mixed martial arts back May 1997 and quickly established himself as the UFC’s top heavyweight by winning his first four fights and becoming the champion in that weight class. A three-year exile followed as he fought elsewhere, but Couture returned to the promotion in late 2000 and quickly picked up from where he had left off by regaining the heavyweight belt and making a couple of successful defences. Back-to-back defeats in 2002 would spell the end for his time in the bigger weight class though, and many felt the September 2002 loss to Ricco Rodriguez should have sent him into retirement. While Couture was coming to terms with the end of his days as the premier heavyweight fighter in the UFC, the company’s light-heavyweight division was in disarray. Chuck Liddell’s seven-fight win streak had made him the number one contender to champion Tito Ortiz, and fight fans were salivating at the prospect of the two men going head-to-head to determine who was the number one fighter in the weight class. There was one major problem though – Ortiz was refusing to defend the belt. Money, injuries, a friendship with Liddell… Ortiz seemingly used every excuse in the book not to share the Octagon with ‘The Iceman’ and that left UFC with a massive headache at a time where the company was really building up some momentum. The UFC ultimately (pardon the pun) made a decision – an interim light-heavyweight title fight would take place at UFC 43 and all they needed was an opponent for Liddell. Surprisingly they turned to Couture and the rest, as they say, was history. Making History. While Couture went into the bout on a two-fight losing sequence, Liddell was a fighter in superb form having won 10 straight fights to establish himself as the number one contender to the light-heavyweight crown. His most recent outing ended in a spectacular head-kick knockout of Renato ‘Babalu’ Sobral in the first round and he was widely expected to take out an ‘over-the-hill’ Couture in equally brutal fashion. Whoever expected that outcome was wrong… very wrong! Liddell was known for having excellent takedown defence, but up until this point he had not fought a man with the wrestling chops that Couture had and he learned that one minute into the first round when ‘The Natural’ picked him up and slammed him down to the mat. Liddell quickly got back to his feet, but the momentum was already on Couture’s side and he enjoyed the better of the stand-up exchanges before driving through another takedown, after Liddell missed with a wild right hand, to ensure he took the first round on the scorecards. Liddell’s frustration was there for all to see at the end of the first round and his mood hardly improved in the second as Couture continued to get the better of the stand-up exchanges – something nobody expected to see prior to the contest – and then dropped his opponent on the mat with a beautifully timed sweep, and in the third it was ‘game over’ as the former heavyweight champion completed a masterful job in his debut at his new weight class. He out-struck Liddell, slammed him to the canvas, quickly transitioned into mount and rained down bombs until John McCarthy stepped in, waved off the contest and made Couture the first two-weight champion in the history of the UFC. Icing A Rivalry. It would be almost two years before the two men would meet for a second time, but it was almost inevitable that we would see Couture-Liddell 2 and it was no surprise when it was announced as the main event of UFC 52, with the two men coaching on ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ television show to increase interest in an already mouth-watering contest. That series produced the legendary Forrest Griffin-Stephan Bonnar fight that led to an explosion in popularity for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, and one week later the company smashed pay-per-view and ticket sales records as fight fans clamoured for the light-heavyweight title fight between two of the sports’ biggest stars. Now it was up to the two fighters to deliver on the biggest stage. Would Liddell prove he was speaking the truth when he underestimated Couture the first time around, or would the defending champion produce another dominant display to prove that first encounter had been no fluke? We got our answer in the first round, but not without some controversy. Referee John McCarthy stepped in after Couture was poked in the eye during an exchange and when the fight resumed he made a critical mistake by charging after the challenger. Liddell backpedalled to stay out of range and landed a right-hook that sent Couture crashing to the canvas, forcing McCarthy to step in as the challenger made sure. Liddell was the new light-heavyweight champion of the world and there was only one word on the lips of everybody after that fight – ‘Trilogy’. The fans were not made to wait too long for it. Both men picked up victories on the UFC 54 card and the trilogy bout was swiftly scheduled to be the main event of UFC 57 – an event that once again broke PPV and gate records for the company. Couture claimed the eye poke in the previous fight had cause him to be angry and reckless, gifting the fight to Liddell, but the champion begged to differ and insisted the result would be the same here. ‘The Iceman’ was right. The finish came early in the second round when Couture appeared to slip while throwing a left hook, presenting Liddell with the opportunity to land a straight right that sent the challenger to the mat. Liddell followed up with a few more strikes for good measure, but by that point the fight – and the rivalry – was over. Couture, who was now 42 years of age, announced his retirement following the fight (a decision that lasted all of one year), while Liddell went on to successfully defend the light-heavyweight title two more times before being knockout out by Quinton ‘Rampage’ Jackson. Liddell was never the same after that night, losing four of his next five fights before calling time on his career, and while the ending of his career was hardly the stuff of fairytale, nobody would ever forget the incredible Couture-Liddell Trilogy that helped catapult the UFC and mixed martial arts into the mainstream.
UFC 252 Betting Pick: Miocic vs Cormier III. Is this the best trilogy in the history of mixed martial arts? Many times, rematches don’t live up to the first fight but these two legendary heavyweights bucked that trend a year ago with an exciting 4-round war. Chuck Liddell and Randy Couture had a pretty rad three fights. Gray Maynard and Frankie Edgar are the only combatants to have their trilogy tied 1-1-1. Rampage and Wanderlei Silva had a couple of wars in PRIDE and Rampage got his revenge with a gorgeous roll through left hook that slept The Axe Murderer. We have seen some good ones, yes, and I’m excited for more but I have to say that the third meeting of Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier might be the most anticipated of them all. This not only decides who can say they are the better fighter, not only for the UFC Heavyweight World Title, but this is a fight to determine who is the greatest heavyweight MMA fighter ever. That’s huge. No pun intended. DC won the first fight pretty quickly. He poked Stipe in the eye early on and then caught him on the same side with a right hook out of the clinch that he never saw coming. In their second bout, Cormier came out strong landing the cleaner strikes and scored a takedown as well in the first round. He stayed away from his wrestling in the second stanza but DC was still able to outbox the Cleveland native. In the third round, though, Daniel Cormier appeared to be slowing a bit. Stipe was good so far and even defended a takedown attempt from the now-former champion. It was close but I believe Miocic won the 3rd round. After a fiery talk from his head coach and cornerman, Miocic came out in the 4th round and changed the entire course of the fight with one adjustment he made on his own. He started landing the left hook to the liver and even though DC kept his best poker face, his body language said otherwise and 9 more shovel shots under the floating rib, and DC was primed for a 1-2 down the middle. That rocked him hard and he was TKO’ed against the fence just seconds later. BetOnline.AG has the betting odds for this matchup. Let’s look at those, examine the fight tape a bit closer, and make our predictions for this legendary matchup. Stipe Miocic (-105) vs Daniel Cormier (-115) Okay, these two men have fought twice and they haven’t fought anyone else since their last meeting. We don’t need to do a bunch of tape on either guy. I am quite familiar with both Cormier and Miocic. Daniel keeps his right elbow very high which leaves him susceptible to left hooks to the body. He also reaches his arms out and loves loves loves to hand fight and flick his punches from there. It’s amazing to see how much pop he can get on those shots because his arms are already so far away from his body. It took Miocic a little while to exploit this but it was the perfect counter to what DC was doing to him. Cormier also kinda gassed towards around the halfway mark or midway through the third round. It was a very busy scrap up to that point but he is probably going to have to do a better job with his conditioning than he did in this last fight. DC has said that the small Octagon should make a big difference for him as he will better be able to use his wrestling and pressure boxing. This could turn out to be quite true but I don’t want you guys to see the small cage and give that edge to the better wrestler. It’s more about who is on the front foot and who is backing up. Khabib is clearly the better wrestler than Conor McGregor but the Irishman was able to push Khab back for most of their fight. He still got taken down but he did keep the center. Stipe Miocic doesn’t have that level of footwork, though. In fact, if you ask him or his coaches, he had absolute zero footwork through the first few rounds in his second fight w DC. He was a plodding statue in there. It wasn’t pretty as he was getting boxed up for a while. I don’t think he can expect to let DC get off to another start that hot, winning the first 12 minutes of the fight before he gets into his groove. I picked Stipe in the second fight so I was crying out for him to use the lead leg left high kick that Jon Jones put Cormier away with in their second meeting. DC dips off HARD to his right to avoid the jab. If Stipe were to just follow his left arm with his left leg, Daniel would slip his chin right into a shin and that could be a wrap for the 41-year-old Cormier. Miocic doesn’t seem like the kinda guy who would put time in stretching, though. I could be wrong but I just don’t get the yoga vibe from Stipe. DC isn’t even 6 feet tall, though… And he’s bending over. Even if it clacks off the arms, it changes the game. I am not expecting it because he hasn’t done it yet but a guy can dream. Cormier says he had a very bad back and couldn’t train properly for the first fight. He said his gameplan was incorrect and to expect a grappling heavy gameplan in the third bout. If Miocic can shut down the hand fighting and the hard dip off to the right from Daniel, he can win the fight. This is a pick’em fight. Anybody out there who is telling you they know who is gonna win is wrong. Sure, they could guess. It’s only 2 fighters fighting. One is gonna win. The line started at a pick’em and it hasn’t moved. That isn’t because the fight is void of popularity. It’s a huge fight! The smart money is staying away from this one but it’s the main event and I know some of you guys want the action. The best we can do here is to say we think one guy wins 6 out of the 10 times these two fight and if we can say that, we have enough value to make a play. From what we have seen, DC is that guy. He won the first fight by first round KO. He won about 70% of the second fight even though he was finished in the fourth round. Has Stipe completely figured him out, though? Shutting down the hand fighting game is a major step. It will be interesting to see how the first round plays out on Saturday night. With the fight tape we have on each guy, Daniel’s superior wrestling, his faster hands, I have to edge Cormier here. It’s not by much but with an even betting line, it doesn’t have to be. In Conclusion. There’s your main event predictions, guys! I have been trying to stay away from the main events lately because they are usually devoid of betting value because of how much attention they receive. Then again, there are times where you can make that attention work in your favor. For instance, Derek Brunson was a gigantic underdog by fight time against the unproven hype train of Edmen Shahbazyan. Yes, I picked Edmen and I hate myself for it. No lie, I barely slept that night even after a few Voodoo Rangers. I felt like such a casual buying that hype and Brunson had won two bets in a row for me as well. This main event as I mentioned earlier, has not been touched by many bettors. There is a little bit more money coming on on DC and I think that’s the athleticism, speed, and wrestling prowess being the difference but it’s still close. Stipe needs to move his feet. If he circles and/or backs up, he is going to run into the cage sooner rather than later as it is small, especially for heavyweights. If he uses that footwork to stalk DC, I think he can win the fight but that’s just not what we have seen. The only time he was moving forward was when DC was already hurt to the body. It’s going to be a great fight, guys, and don’t ruin it by emptying your wallet on a bet for either fighter. I say throw a unit on DC. Hopefully, we will be at a point where even a main event loss will still leave us in the green for the night. Get your bets in now, guys, because I see a little more money coming in on Cormier.

The COVID-19 pandemic has made matters even worse, according to Luke, a Chicago-area problem gambler who was able to get out of the game nine years ago. It was seedy,” said Luke, who asked that his full name not be used. “Now, you can do it on your phone. That figure jumped past 1,000 in 2020, and experts say it doesn’t even cut the deck as only an estimated 3% of problem gamblers acknowledge they have a problem, and even fewer seek treatment. Counseling gets boost with Illinois gambling expansion — but more addiction is sure to follow. State’s all-in gambling expansion offers new temptation for those struggling to stay out. Hundreds more took the more drastic step of banning themselves from casinos and the smartphone betting apps that have them hooked. About 13,500 people were enrolled in the self-exclusion program maintained by regulators at the Illinois Gaming Board in mid-2019, but that number has since shot past 14,000. Nine Michigan casinos begin online sports betting and gaming this weekend. LANSING, Mich. (WJRT) - Online gambling and sports betting will be allowed in Michigan for the first time this weekend. The Michigan Gaming Control Board has authorized nine casinos in the state to begin online operations at noon Friday. The board is reviewing more applications and may authorize additional online gambling or betting options later. “Michigan residents love sports and, judging by inquiries we’ve received, eagerly anticipate using mobile devices to place bets through the commercial and tribal casinos,” said Gaming Control Board Executive Director Richard Kalm. “Online gaming and sports betting will provide the casinos with new ways to engage with customers while the state and local communities will benefit from taxes and payments on wagering revenue.” Michigan is collecting an 8.4% tax on sports betting and 20% to 28% tax on online gambling. Detroit’s casinos may have to pay an additional municipal services fee on top of that. The online gaming and betting revenue from Detroit casinos will be divided with 30% going to the city, 65% going to state funds and 5% going to the Michigan Agriculture Equine Industry Development Fund. A provision allows the city to collect a minimum of $183 million per year. For tribal casinos, 90% of payments to the state from online sports betting will go to a state fund and 10% will go to the Michigan Strategic Fund, which is used for economic development projects. State online gaming revenue will be split with 20% going to local municipalities, 70% to a state fund and 10% to the Michigan Strategic Fund. The state’s share of online gaming and betting revenue will help pay for Michigan Gaming Control Board operations, the Compulsive Gambling Prevention Fund, First Responder Presumed Coverage Fund and school funding. You can hone your rolling skills in the three Bowling mini-games in the Training section of Wii Sports. Not only do the mini-games give you a fun challenge, they give your bowling fundamentals an excellent workout. What kind of workout? Read on to learn about these unique challenges and a few tips to get you closer to the gold and platinum Training medals. Picking Up Spares The concept of the first Training exercise, called Picking Up Spares, is easy enough: simply knock down a couple pins, make your spare and move on. Except that these aren’t your ordinary spares. Sure, some of the beginning spares are some of the more common ones you’ll find in bowling. But as the lane numbers get higher on their way to 20, the spares demand more and more precision to convert. The tougher spares contain ‘sleeper’ pins – pins that are positioned directly behind another pin. To pick up these pins, you’ll need excellent precision and the ability to throw the ball straight. The other major challenge you’ll face comes from picking up splits. Thankfully, you won’t see your first one until lane 11. If you fail five times, the game ends, and you need to make each spare before you move on to the next lane. Lofting If you’re having trouble rolling the ball straight, try lofting the ball. Instead of rolling on the lane as soon as you release the ball, a lofted ball is lifted into the air, and when it hits the ground, the impact deadens most of the ball’s spin. To loft the ball, you need to follow-though more on your throw. Every time you roll the ball, you create an angle with your elbow. When lofting the ball, you’ll want to create a right (90-degree) angle with your elbow. Once you’ve created that angle, release the B Button. This is a process that you’ll need to perform quickly as the quicker you jerk your arm up, the more pronounced the loft which should send the ball past the first set of marks on the lane. This technique becomes important when you play the Spin Control Training mini-game. Power Throws The second Training game, Power Throws, takes a standard pin setup and super-sizes it, adding a new back row of pins in each stage. By the time you get to the 10th stage, you’ll be throwing at a whopping 91 pins. You get one throw per stage and get one point for each pin you knock down. If you get a strike, you earn double the number of pins for that stage. Most importantly, there is no gutter in this mini-game but instead a bumper that pins bounce off of, giving you some crazy pin action. Because of this, you don’t actually have to throw the ball hard – as the mini-game name implies; you simply need to hit the pocket and let that pin action do the rest. Bumper guide As the pin triangle keeps growing, it becomes harder and harder to line up your shot to aim for the red head pin and pocket. Luckily, there’s a trick that will help you hit the head pin and pocket each time. On the bumpers, there are white Wii Sports logos. What you can do is aim your shot just past the first logo and roll the ball directly at the bumper. Your ball will ricochet off the bumper and head directly to the pocket. If you aim at the right bumper, you’ll want to put left spin on the ball and the opposite for the other bumper. This technique doesn’t guarantee you a strike, but it does give you a great chance. The 91-pin secret You can get a strike on the last stage without even hitting a pin, but it takes some skill – and a lot of guts. If you can manage to roll the ball all the way down the lane on top of the bumper, you will hear a click and then an explosion, which knocks down all 91 pins. To give yourself a chance at this skill shot, you need to know how to loft the ball. When the frame starts, press the A Button and move the aim two clicks to the right. Then, press A again to switch to directional adjustment. Move your Mii all the way to the right, next to the bumper. (Do the opposite of these instructions if you’re left-handed.) Finally, loft the ball. The loft makes the ball land on the bumper, and if you threw it straight, it will roll all the way to the end, giving you the bonus. However, if you don’t throw the ball perfectly, you risk getting no points for the final frame. Spin Control In the final Bowling Training mini-game, you only need to hit one pin per lane. However, to get to that pin, you’ll need to navigate around barriers that force you to change your approach toward a pin. You’ll need to employ straight, spin and loft if you plan on clearing all 20 lanes. For the first six lanes, a straight ball will get you where you want to go, but after that, to clear the remaining lanes you’ll need a combination of spin, loft and possibly magic, especially once you get to lane 16 where you need to perform a precision bank shot off a barrier. When you fail five times, the game is over. Ride the gutter On several shots, the only way to get past the barrier is to ‘ride’ the gutter. When you ride the gutter, the ball will roll straight down the edge of the lane and then halfway down the lane curve toward the pin. To ride the gutter, aim at an angle where the ball will miss the final barrier. Then move your Mii to a point next to the gutter until the red directional line touches the gutter (most likely this will be at the foul line). Now, you’re lined up to make your shot. Roll the ball and put a major amount of spin on it. Your ball should roll on the edge of the lane and then break back into the pin after the last barrier is cleared. Coloured balls Just like in the main Wii Sports Bowling game, you can change the colour of your ball in the Training mini-games. At the moment when the screen goes black before the game begins, you can press a direction on the Wii Remote’s +Control Pad to use a different ball. To do this trick: When you select which type of game to play, "Single Game", "Best of 3", or "Best of 5", it shows you which players are at which locations on the court. Your Mii's default position is the left side server. On the same side, use the A Button and click on the figure standing at the net. It will change from the "?" shadow to your Mii (assuming you are playing alone). Then proceed to pick which duration of tennis you'd like to play. Note that you should ensure that you win, otherwise you may be at risk to lose double the amount of skill points if you lose. Bowling Ball Color Change. You can select your bowling ball color before you bowl by using the directional pad. This should cause the ball to strongly curve towards the middle, usually causing a strike. You really don’t want to wind up throwing a Wiimote at your TV, especially with all the force and power you’re putting behind your bowling swings. Change the Color of Your Bowling Ball - Wii Bowling Tricks. This took some work to figure out, because you have to be precise about the timing — at first we were inclined to chuck this tip into the “no” column! It is possible to change the color of your bowling ball. When you start up Wii Sports Bowling, you get the usual Wii “Don’t hurt yourself, dummy” warning screen. Press “A” and right after that, while the screen is black and loading up Wii Bowling, press and hold the key of your choice for each color ball: If you’re already within the game itself, pause the game, select Start Over, and press the directional key of your choice while the game is reloading. That’s it! Tip: When you reach 1,000 skill, you get a sparkly new ball. And my god, it’s full of stars. Make the Crowd Jump. Doing this will make the crowd behind you in the alley jump and either laugh or scream — you tell us; we can’t tell. Basically, you’re going to surprise or scare the heck out of them by tossing your ball back into the lounge area. While preparing to bowl, let go of the “B” on the backswing so that the ball is thrown backwards into the crowd. They will jump up and down and make noise. Easter Egg in Bowling Training. We attempted this trick several times and failed, and were ready to write it off. However, a side trip to YouTube offered verification that this Wii Bowling Easter egg does exist. Play Power Bowling in Training Mode. On the last frame, 91 pins, go all the way to one side and throw your ball not in the lane, but atop the guide wall. If you do it properly, the ball will roll all the way down the wall to the end, at which time there’s a loud noise and all 91 pins fall down as if blown over. Given that it’s not too incredibly hard to get a strike in Power Bowling, accomplishing this Easter egg is actually quite a bit more difficult than simply bowling the pins over. As you can see, there aren’t tons of Wii Bowling tips built into the game. However, it’s great learning how to improve your game and little bonuses like changing the color of your bowling ball, how to startle the crowd, or how to get a neat little Easter egg. 2021 Daytona 500 Odds, Picks & Predictions: 3 Early Bets for NASCAR’s Biggest Race. Photo by Brian Lawdermilk/Getty Images. The new year is finally here, and while that means football season is coming to a close, it’s also a reminder that NASCAR’s season-opening race, the Daytona 500 (Feb. 14 at 2:30 p.m. ET), is right around the corner. Daytona 500 odds are available at most sportsbooks, so it’s time to turn our attention toward motorsports and start building betting cards for NASCAR’s biggest race. With this in mind, here are three drivers I’m locking in right now for the Daytona 500. Daytona 500 Picks. *Odds as of Jan. 8 at 10 a.m. ET. In an event that can be very random, Hamlin has found a way to dominate the Great American Race in recent years. The Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR) driver has won back-to-back 500s and three of the last five. That’s pretty good. And it’s not just Daytona that fits Denny’s superspeedway eye as of late, evidenced by finishes of fourth and first at Talladega last year as well. In fact, here were Hamlin’s finishes at the four superspeedway races last season: first, fourth, third and first, for an insane 2.3 average finish. I’m typically in very little rush to bet Daytona 500 favorites this early, but I can’t find any reason to wait on Hamlin at 8-1 odds right now. I just can’t quit you at superspeedways, Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Stenhouse is the ultimate checkers-or-wreckers driver, a characteristic that often results in wadded-up race cars. Still, I’m not overly concerned about where he finishes because, as a bettor, if he ain’t first, he’s last. Ricky’s two Cup Series victories came at Talladega at Daytona (both in 2017), and he’s shown the speed to win there throughout this career, including last season after switching from Roush Fenway Racing to JTG-Daugherty Racing. Stenhouse won the pole and led the third-most laps in the 2020 Daytona 500, then followed it up with a runner-up at Talladega in June in which he crossed the finish line .007 seconds behind winner Ryan Blaney in a crazy finish. At 20-1, this is a worthy price to add one of the series’ top superspeedway drivers, especially one who will not settle for anything less than a win. Part of being a successful bettor is understanding your flaws, especially the ones that bleed profit throughout the season. My New Year’s NASCAR betting resolution is to stop taking so many longshots at superspeedway races, especially the Daytona 500. Sure, anything can happen in these races and that’s what can be seductive with longshot prices, but the deep sleepers rarely ever take the checkered flag. As a result, I’ll be looking more toward props for my favorite sleepers — follow me on Twitter (@PJWalsh24) for my Daytona 500 props — while avoiding them (hopefully) to win outright. With that said, I’m taking a shot, and a fairly big one, on Chris Buescher at 40-1 odds. Here are the top 10 drivers (sorted by driver rating at the four superspeedway races last season) and corresponding 2021 Daytona 500 betting odds via BetMGM. The list above includes the six drivers with the best odds to win the Daytona 500 and seven drivers at 16-1 or shorter. Kurt Busch, the 2017 winner is next at 20-1, leaving just Buescher (40-1) and Jones (66-1) as the outliers. For those wondering, Jones, who was around 28-1 to win this race last year, switched from powerhouse team JGR to Richard Petty Motorsports in the offseason, explaining the significant drop in price. That list alone illustrates why I’m willing to take a flier on Buescher, but looking at average finish makes this bet even more appetizing. Hamlin and Blaney were the only current Cup Series regulars who finished with better average finishes than Buescher at superspeedways in 2020. So, in Buescher we’re getting a driver … In very fast Roush Fenway Racing superspeedway equipment. Who finished with the sixth-best driver rating at superspeedways in 2020. A 3-0 comfortable result for Leicester is just as likely (on current form) as a 2-1 result for either side given what Wolves are actually capable of when they’re firing on all cylinders. But football is a cruel business, and though Wolves still had to rely on a Ruben Neves penalty, and a superb strike from range from compatriot Joao Moutinho, the result cannot mask the fact that Wolves were poor at the back throughout. Arsenal still crafted chances when down to ten men, and even still when down to just nine later on in proceedings. Something needs to change in the West Midlands; soon. Under normal circumstances, at the very least, Wolves should be more difficult to break down and usually are when in a back-three. But the wheels falling off the bus when transitioned into a back-four given selection issues should be a massive concern for Espirito Santo. Issues this season are so much more than just having to cope with Raúl Jimenez’s injury, or the sale of Diogo Jota. Willian José is a rather capable temporary centre-forward replacement, while Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence have shown their attacking qualities. Refreshment in midfield in the long term could also be targeted, but at the very least, taking on a very difficult Leicester-side is another acid test on where Wolves currently are, but also if they have reached the end of the line in their current iteration. Leicester City must continue to avoid the expected decline. Registering just four points from twelve in the last four matches of the 2019-20 Premier League campaign consigned Leicester City to Europa League football rather than an unexpected dream-return to the Champions League. Many expect the Foxes – rightly or wrongly – to lose steam once again under Brendan Rodgers, especially with the resumption of the Europa League on the horizon. Once again, Leicester are very much masters of their own destiny. In a Premier League that has never had so much quality from top to bottom, Rodgers must ensure that performance levels remain; especially against sides that are far below them in the table. There are no easy matches in the English top flight these days, not even against the likes of Sheffield United or Fulham; sides that already seemed destined to drop down to the Championship. On paper, this is the perfect time to play a Wolves outfit that are struggling with their identity on the pitch. But the truth is that many a club are often at their most dangerous when their backs are against the wall in some measure, while it is so easy to lose sight of your performances when you are flying high without a care in the world. The balance must be struck for Leicester, and struck well. Reliance on Jamie Vardy – or the implication of such – must be avoided at all costs, while still highlighting one of the most dangerous goal scorers in recent memory in the Premier League. With Vardy hopeful of being reintroduced into the matchday XI at the weekend, resumption of service in the final third for Leicester would go a long way to help them stave-off any loss of form. On their day, Leicester are good value for where they currently sit in the table and are determined to prove they belong amongst the elite in England. LANSING, Mich. – Online sports betting and casino games will start in Michigan at noon Friday, an expansion of options for gamblers who now wager through offshore sites. State regulators have authorized licenses for all three Detroit casinos and seven of the dozen tribes with “Class III” casinos. Additional operator and platform provider licenses are expected to be approved in coming weeks. Michigan Gaming Control Board Executive Director Richard Kalm this week called the launch a “new era,” saying it will give casinos an additional way to engage with customers and provide state and local governments with extra tax revenue. Large players in the U.S. mobile gambling market such as DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM are launching apps and enticing people age 21 and older with deals to sign up. But my expectation is that online casino and in due course poker will be equally popular,” said BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt. His company's app — previously launched in 10 states — is connected to MGM Resorts, including the Detroit casino and hotel. Greenblatt said the state's 8.4% online sports betting tax is “very sensible,” allowing licensed operators to compete with offshore sites. “You've got a group of players who have long been betting offshore. We would like to see them bring their play back on shore,” he said. He said there will be minimal if any “cannibalization” of business from players who typically visit casinos but instead will play on the internet. “We see an expansion of the market — so new players coming in to enjoy our product,” Greenblatt said, adding that MGM, like other casinos, will incentivize online gamblers to redeem rewards points by visiting onsite. Casinos offering online games like blackjack will pay a tax of between 20% and 28%, depending on their amount of adjusted gross receipts. Net new annual revenues to the state and Detroit, which has commercial casinos, are projected to total $18.6 million and $13.7 million respectively, according to the Michigan Department of Treasury. The money will go to the state’s school aid fund, which covers public schools. It also will be earmarked to a state fund that compensates first responders for lost wages and medical benefits if they get cancer from fighting fires. What was the probability that Barack Obama would win the US election? On the face of it this seems an odd question. After all, he won. But before the election it was uncertain whether Obama would win, and probability is the way that uncertainty is quantified, so maybe it is reasonable to ask what that probability was. We know that there were betting odds – a betting exchange such as Intrade allows people both to accept or make bets and so converges, at any point in time, to a certain set of odds at which people are willing to be either the better or the bookmaker. This prediction market provides a ‘probability’ on Obama winning that kept changing for the year before the election – this is shown in Figure 1 with some of the main events of the year marked in. 'Probabilities' of Obama and McCain winning the 2008 US Presidential Election. A ‘probability’ of 20% means that people were willing to take and make bets at ‘4 to 1 against’, which means that if someone put £1 on Obama winning, they would receive back £4 winnings plus their stake to make £5 in total. . But do these betting odds really represent the probability? How does this fit with how probability is taught in school? In fact what does probability mean? Does it even exist? These are reasonable questions to ask, and we quickly get into some tricky philosophical issues. Assessing probability in a non-repeatable situation. Let’s look at the different ways we might think about probability, and whether each way might tell us what the probability of Obama winning might have been. The Classical idea of probability is based on equally likely outcomes: if there are $N$ possible outcomes the probability of each one is $1/N$. This is what is generally taught in schools, and works fine for coins, dice and other physical objects where it may be reasonable to assume some symmetry between the outcomes. In the election there were two main candidates, so would the probability of Obama winning be 50%? Just because there are two alternatives does not mean they are equally likely. And in fact there were up to 14 other candidates including names that could be written in, depending on the state, but a probability of 1/15 seems even more unreasonable. So the classical view does not work here. The frequency interpretation is based on what proportion of events happen in the long run: for example, we might say the probability of a dropped piece of toast landing butter-side down is 80% if that is the proportion of times it happens if we keep droping toast (in controlled conditions) for millions of times. But this interpretation is difficult to apply to specific events such as Obama becoming President since they are essentially unique. We would need to place the event in a class of repeatable opportunities that stretch into the future, such as ‘black men becoming president’. Looking into the past we note that there have been 43 Presidents of the USA of whom precisely 0 have been black, so the current observed proportion is 0/43. Does this mean the best estimate of the probability that Obama becoming President was 0%? Clearly this would be ridiculous. Even if we were misguided enough to place Obama within this class of events, there is a better way of working out a probability which will be explained below. Another possibility that has been suggested is that there is some true underlying ‘degree of belief’ in the statement ‘Obama will be the next President’ that, given the knowledge that we have, it would be logical to hold. This proposal leaves open the question of how to estimate this quantity and does not seem helpful in this situation. Rather more attractive is the idea that there is some true underlying propensity for an event to happen – this is an objective state of the world but needs to be estimated from what we know. One mental picture for this is to consider all the possible ways in which things might turn out, and then think of what proportion of these possible futures end up with Obama being President. This approach seems a bit shaky from a philosophical point of view (can we really think of the set of ‘possible futures’?), but means that we can think of probability as a frequency without having to think of some class into which to embed the event we are interested in. The final way of thinking of this probability comes back to the betting: the probability is essentially the odds you are willing to accept in a bet based on your own subjective judgement. The betting exchange probabilities plotted above provides a kind of group assessment. Such probabilities could be interpreted as your best current estimate of the ‘true’ probability (which is not directly measurable). Alternatively, and a view that I prefer, we can say that the probability is not an estimate of any actual quantity in the outside world, but simply an assessment of the odds that You are willing to take. You don't have to actually place any bets: Your probability that Obama will be President is, say, 50% if you are indifferent between the following two options: either (a) obtaining a reward if Obama becomes President, and (b) obtaining the same reward if a flipped coin comes up heads. The attractive thing about this interpretation of probability is that it does not matter whether the event is truly unpredictable, or whether it is pre-ordained and you just don’t happen to know how things will turn out. For example, before I flip a coin, you may say your odds are 50:50 on heads. If I flip the coin but cover up the result , your odds should not change, even though the uncertainty is now due to our ignorance rather than any essential unpredictability.
