With the opening line surging up four points, now is perhaps the perfect time to buyback in the other direction. While no one has been able to stop Kyle Trask and the Gators all season, I believe the talented Oklahoma defense will welcome the challenge of slowing them down. I’m also not certain Spencer Rattler will find much easy success against an SEC defense. Just to help put the line in perspective, at 71.5, an Under bet would still be a winner in a 38-31 game. Wagering wins: Most Louisiana parishes back sports betting. BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Sports betting won with voters in most of Louisiana’s parishes on Election Day. Voters in at least 52 of Louisiana’s 64 parishes agreed in Tuesday’s election to legalize sports wagering in their parishes, while voters in at least five other parishes refused to allow the gambling within their legal limits. The Associated Press deemed another seven parishes too close to immediately call. The parishes that approved represent most of Louisiana’s population, including all of the major metro areas, in a state that already has a lottery, casinos, video poker and slot machines at racetracks. But sports betting on live-action games is likely at least a year away because lawmakers still have to set the tax rates and regulations. Sports betting opponents, such as pastors and the conservative Louisiana Family Forum, had a difficult time fighting the organized pro-wagering message of gambling companies that poured more than $2 million into a political action committee called Louisiana Wins. “The people of Louisiana have spoken. Louisiana was missing out on tax revenue from not having legal sports wagering, and now we will be able to raise revenue to support our state’s many needs,” Ryan Berni with Louisiana Wins said in a statement. However, estimates of the taxes Louisiana could bring in from sports betting vary widely — and depend on how expansive lawmakers allow the wagering to be. Parishes where voters refused to legalize sports betting include rural Catahoula, Franklin, LaSalle, West Carroll and Winn. In seven parishes, the decision remained unclear: Beauregard, Caldwell, Grant, Jackson, Richland, Sabine and Union. Tuesday’s sport betting victory was even larger than a similar win two years ago, when residents of 47 parishes agreed to legalize fantasy sports competitions for online cash prizes. Voter legalization in a parish is only the first step of a multistep process, however. Determining which live action sports games will be allowed in the gambling, where the wagers can happen and how the activity will be taxed must be settled in a future legislative session. Lawmakers — who agreed in a two-thirds vote to let parishes decide whether to legalize sports betting — must create the licensing, regulation and tax framework before wagering begins. In other statewide propositions beyond sports betting, voters backed five of the seven constitutional changes proposed, while overwhelmingly rejecting two amendments recommended by lawmakers. Notably, more than 62% of voters agreed to rewrite the Louisiana Constitution to ensure it does not offer protections for abortion rights, a provision that would become relevant if the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion nationwide is overturned. On the other amendments, voters: —Approved Amendment 2 to change the way oil and gas wells are assessed for property taxes, allowing a well’s production to be included in determining the fair market value. —Agreed to Amendment 3 to let lawmakers use the state’s “rainy day” fund to offset costs tied to federally declared disasters, like a hurricane. —Rejected Amendment 4, a proposal pushed by conservative lawmakers that would have recalculated Louisiana’s cap on annual growth in government to make it harder for lawmakers to increase spending beyond certain limits. —Refused Amendment 5, which would have let manufacturers and local government agencies negotiate financial deals to replace the property taxes these companies could owe for industrial expansion. —Approved Amendment 6 to allow higher-income homeowners to qualify for a special freeze in their property tax assessments. —Backed Amendment 7 to lock up Louisiana’s unclaimed property dollars in a trust fund that cannot be used to pay for state operating expenses.

But, for some, it might open the door to regular betting, adding a quick dopamine hit to the regular season viewing experience. Maybe they’ll have to start budgeting for a new habit. Maybe they’ll have to start borrowing for it. And, for a select few, it will get worse. It’s already gotten worse for hundreds of people statewide since Illinois legislators approved a massive gaming expansion a year and a half ago, introducing legal sports wagering to a state that’s already packed with more places to gamble than Las Vegas. The COVID-19 pandemic has made matters even worse, according to Luke, a Chicago-area problem gambler who was able to get out of the game nine years ago. Economic uncertainty and the general malaise of the quarantine lifestyle make gambling all the more enticing. “It used to be that there was a stigma, and gambling was taboo. It was seedy,” said Luke, who asked that his full name not be used. “Now, you can do it on your phone. Calls to the state’s gambling disorder hotline more than doubled from 2019 to 2020, when 13,258 people reached out either there or online for information on a problem that experts say is out of sight but front of mind for a growing number of bettors and their families. The Illinois Department of Human Services, which aims to connect problem gamblers with counseling resources, calls that a “dramatic increase.” In 2019, about 580 people received treatment for gambling disorders through state-sponsored programs across Illinois. That figure jumped past 1,000 in 2020, and experts say it doesn’t even cut the deck as only an estimated 3% of problem gamblers acknowledge they have a problem, and even fewer seek treatment. Counseling gets boost with Illinois gambling expansion — but more addiction is sure to follow. State’s all-in gambling expansion offers new temptation for those struggling to stay out. Hundreds more took the more drastic step of banning themselves from casinos and the smartphone betting apps that have them hooked. About 13,500 people were enrolled in the self-exclusion program maintained by regulators at the Illinois Gaming Board in mid-2019, but that number has since shot past 14,000. Many of those gamblers cite their temptations as coming from the state’s 10 casinos, three horse racing tracks and 7,233 bars, restaurants, gas stations and VFW halls that also house slot machines. But since mobile sports betting launched last summer, Illinoisans can now gamble 24/7 from the comfort of home — and they’ve already lost more than $101 million doing so, according to Gaming Board revenue figures. About 10 former patients have already returned to the Way Back Inn for counseling this football season alone. “Sometimes, we forget how quickly it can happen,” Pindiur said. “These things are advertised in a way that they’re fun and entertaining, and they should be. But often there is no set of limits or recognition of the limits until we get our credit-card bill, or somebody points it out.” Illinois sports betting market could rival Nevada’s, analysts say. My relationships with my family and whoever I was dating, it just got out of control. I was lying, I was stealing, I was doing all these crazy things.” As sports betting has been brought out of the shadows into everyday life, counselors say their challenge now is removing the stigma around seeking treatment for addiction — and they say they’re making progress through increased awareness. That’s been boosted with the help of $7 million set aside in the state’s gambling expansion law in grants for treatment centers, which have used a lot of that money to bolster advertising. The Way Back Inn is one of only a handful of addiction treatment centers in Illinois that provide a gambling-specific program. The agency launched a $500,000 study last fall surveying treatment providers, problem gamblers and others to gauge the prevalence of addiction, especially among populations considered vulnerable or marginalized due to race, culture, economic or social disparity. “We want to know what’s the challenge, and what should we look for,” said David Jones, who directs the department’s Substance Use Prevention and Recovery Division. “Then, you can start to bring more evidence-based solutions on a size consistent with the scale of the challenge.”

Average spending with illegal bookies fell 25 percent in legal sports betting states last year, while legal online and mobile betting spend increased 12 percent . So yes, sportsbooks don’t put random numbers on the odds of every bet. They are carefully calculated by studying the factors that could lead to a game’s result. Again, betting on the underdog gets you higher winnings because it involves higher risk. Point Spreads. The Point Spread is a bet that’s popular not just with NCAA college football, but with all of sports betting. Essentially, point spreads are betting lines that give the underdog team an advantage. Instead of betting on the likely winner, sportsbooks will list a margin of points called the spread. For the winning team, these are a range of points they should exceed to win the bet and “cover the spread”. If they manage to even beat Wake Forest and win the game, you also win the bet! However, if they lose by 7 points to the Demon Deacons and fail to cover the spread, you lose the wager. Note that -110 simply means that if you bet $110 and won the wager, you’ll get $100 in profit. Over/Under or Totals. The Over/Under or Totals bet lets you wager on whether the game’s total amount of points will go “over” or “under” a certain amount. If you think that the game will end with more than 61 total points, then bet on “over” (O 60.5). Futures bets are wagers on events that are yet to happen. Examples of these include wagering on who bettors think will win the National Championship, Playoffs, or even the Heisman Trophy. Futures odds will look a bit different compared to other college football odds: The higher the team’s chances of winning, the shorter the odds. Our findings were derived from analysis of the 2015 Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey. 1 The HILDA Survey is designed so that findings can be generalised to the Australian adult population. Survey-based estimates show that in 2015, well over half a million Australian adults regularly placed bets on sports. Most sports bettors were men, and aged between 18 and 49. Their typical monthly expenditure on sports betting amounted to around $1,000 each over the year. Forty-one per cent of regular sports bettors experienced one or more gambling-related problems. Key messages. In 2015, well over half a million Australian adults (574,000) were estimated to have regularly wagered on sports. Sports bettors were overwhelmingly male (88%), aged between 18 and 49 (75%), and working full-time (70%). On average, sports bettors spent close to half their typical gambling outlay on sports betting (45%), and just over half on other activities. Forty-one per cent of all regular sports bettors—234,000 adults—experienced one or more gambling problems in 2015. In a typical month, 46 cents in every dollar spent on sports betting by regular sports bettors came from a person with moderate to severe gambling problems. Sports betting participation. Well over half a million Australian adults (574,000) placed bets on sports (excluding horse and dog racing 2 ) in a typical month of 2015. 3 They represented 3.3% of Australian adults, or 8% of those who gambled in a typical month (i.e., regular gamblers). This made it the fifth most popular regular gambling activity, after lotteries, scratch tickets, electronic gaming machines (EGMs, aka "pokies"), and race betting. Nationally, typical monthly sports betting expenditure amounted to roughly $579 million over the year. 4 This equates to an estimated spend of $1,032 a year per sports bettor. Sports bettors also spent money on other gambling activities, with sports betting making up 45% of their total gambling spending. Their remaining gambling outlay was mostly spent on race betting and lotteries (Figure 1). In total, the average sports bettor spent $192 across all gambling activities in a typical month of 2015, amounting to $2,305 over the year. 5. Regular sports bettors were overwhelmingly male (88%), aged between 18 and 49 (75%), and worked full-time (70%). They were much more likely to have a higher-than-average income (55%) than lower-than-average income (28%). Furthermore, compared to the Australian adult population, a substantially higher proportion of regular sports bettors were single (56% of sports bettors vs 45% of Australian adults), born in Australia (82% vs 70%) and identified as Indigenous (4.6% vs 2.3%). Gambling problems. In 2015, 41% of all regular sports bettors - 234,000 adults - experienced one or more gambling-related problems (Table 1). That is, their gambling behaviour caused or put them at risk of harm. 6 This was more than double the rate among regular gamblers nationally. This further means that one fifth of all regular gamblers who experienced problems in Australia regularly participated in sports betting. Around 23% of regular sports bettors - 134,000 adults - had moderate to severe gambling problems. Those with severe problems, known as problem gamblers, spent close to six times as much on sports betting over the year ($3,910 vs $693) and close to seven times as much on gambling overall ($9,717 vs $1,428) (Figure 2). This was higher than the amount spent by problem gamblers on any other activity. Figure 2: Average expenditure by regular sports bettors in 2015. In a typical month, well over half of all sports betting expenditure by regular gamblers - 61 cents in every dollar - was accounted for by those who experienced any sort of gambling problem (Figure 3). Close to half - 46 cents in every dollar - was accounted for by those who experienced moderate to severe problems. Regular sports bettors who reported problems had four characteristics that distinguished them from those who did not experience problems. They were more likely to be: 7. Types of problems. The types of gambling-related problems experienced by regular sports bettors were also explored. In 2015, almost one in five sports bettors (18%; 103,000) felt they might have a gambling problem. Close to a quarter bet more than they could afford to lose (22%; 126,000); 27% (16,000) tried to win back money they lost on another day. For 12% (70,000), gambling had caused them physical or mental health problems. These problems stemmed from bettors' overall gambling activity, which included sports betting. Sports bettors who experienced gambling-related problems were also much more likely than those who did not, to live in households that experienced financial problems. The likelihood of financial problems escalated with the severity of sports bettors' gambling problems. Half of all households containing a sports bettor with severe gambling problems had members who reported asking family or friends for financial help during the year. A third (34%) had household members who reported they could not pay bills on time due to a shortage of money, and a quarter (28%) could not pay the rent or mortgage on time. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs will look to sling it as they usually do as the team who ranks fifth in yards per pass attempt in the NFL with 7.7. The Browns have patented a strong ground and pound offensive attack as the tandem of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt in the backfield create the production. Cleveland will look to continue their rush dominance as they are seventh in the NFL in yards per rush attempt on the season with 4.8. The total sits at 57 with no juice to either side and is quite high as it sits nearly nine points higher than the league average. Surprisingly, in games with totals in the 50s, the Browns are 4-1 to the over. When the Browns cover as we expect them to do, the over is 5-2. Both offenses have found success this season and boast average defenses at best. The Kansas City offense sits second on the season in yards per play, just behind the Texans at 6.3, while Cleveland is at 11 th with 5.8 yards per play. With two offenses that are meeting at a time that they are both operating at a high clip, don’t let the number scare you off and take the over in this spot. Player Props. Nick Chubb found a great balance of success against the Steelers in the wild card round as he combined for 145 yards in their victory last weekend. Expect more of the same from Chubb against a Kansas City defense that ranks 18 th in yards per rush attempt and 17 th in yards per pass attempt. He has been a key in getting the Browns this far in the season and will be looked towards by both head coach Kevin Stefanski and quarterback Baker Mayfield as an engine to the offense and a key to victory. There were times in the spring when some wondered whether the NFL should even hold its draft — virtually, mind you — amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Conversations about the feasibility of an actual season followed, and on more than one occasion, the 2020 campaign felt like a pigskin house of cards ready to topple with one or two more positive tests. Yet, here we are. Somehow, the NFL has been able to push through the pandemic and will play Super Bowl LV as scheduled Sunday night when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers welcome the Kansas City Chiefs to Raymond James Stadium. Will the Bucs become the first team not only to host the Super Bowl but hoist the Lombardi Trophy in their own stadium? The Bucs have been the best team in the NFL over their seven-game winning streak, in large part because of that defense. Tampa Bay’s pass rush is disruptive, as Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers can attest. Now, they go up against an offensive line that could be without Mitchell Schwartz and Eric Fisher. Tampa feasted on Green Bay’s offensive line without top tackle David Bakhtiari, and this feels like a similar situation. Sustained pressure up front should help the Bucs limit the Chiefs’ big-play potential, which is what doomed them in these teams’ Week 12 matchup. Eventually, they got that fixed, and the Bucs made a game of that one. As long as they don’t make similar mistakes this Sunday, they’ll be in position to win this game late. And if that’s the case, are you really willing to bet against Brady? Super Bowl LV Odds: Why You Should Bet Over In Buccaneers-Chiefs. Ricky: Chiefs Trying to avoid analysis paralysis. The Chiefs have won 25 of their last 27 games dating back to Week 11 of the 2019 season. Sure, they’ve gone just 1-8-1 ATS in their last 10 games, but the bulk of those contests featured inflated spreads and were of little consequence. Kansas City, which is 15-4-1 ATS in its last 20 games when favored by three points or fewer, has played its best football when the stakes are raised. And I just can’t pass on the opportunity to back Mahomes, the best quarterback on the planet, with such a short number. The Bucs’ defense definitely will be better prepared than it was in Week 12 — a low bar to clear, obviously — and having cornerback Jamel Dean healthy this time around will be critical in Tampa Bay’s effort to slow Tyreek Hill, in particular. But there are questions on the back end — safeties Antoine Winfield and Jordan Whitehead are dealing with injuries — and that’s concerning when facing Kansas City’s high-powered offense, which ranked third in explosive pass rate and basically operates on its own speed setting. There also could be opportunities for Kansas City to lean on its running backs in the passing game if Tampa Bay devotes too much attention to slowing Hill and Travis Kelce. The Bucs allowed the most receptions (101) to running backs during the regular season, and Tampa Bay’s linebackers are exploitable in coverage, for as daunting as they are in terms of rushing the passer. Expect some offensive ingenuity from KC. And don’t sleep on Kansas City’s defense. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo (the Giants’ DC when New York upset the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII) know a thing or two about Mr. Brady. Super Bowl LV Odds: Why You Should Bet Under In Chiefs-Buccaneers. Andre: Bucs Not enough is being made of Fisher’s absence. In 2019, the star left tackle missed eight games and the Chiefs went 4-4. When he did play, the Chiefs were undefeated. Schwartz also is out for Kansas City, whose decimated offensive line has to go up against Tampa Bay’s ferocious pass rush, which finished second in QB hits this season. This isn’t good news for Mahomes, who was walking with a limp in the AFC Championship Game. Mahomes can’t expect to get much help from his running attack because of the Bucs’ elite rush defense, which allowed the fewest yards per carry this season. All of this might make it difficult for the Chiefs to keep up with the Bucs, who get to wake up in their own beds in a de facto home game. Tampa Bay’s running attack should take advantage of Kansas City’s porous rush defense, which had the second-worst expected points contributed on Pro-Football Reference. The Chiefs also allowed the most receiving yards to running backs, so expect Brady to employ short passes to his backs. Success on short passes could create unpredictability on deep passes.
