п»їWii Sports Boxing Game. There is both offense (punching) and defense (blocking and dodging). Wii Boxing Defensive moves Hold the Wii-mote and nunchuck vertically. Tilt them left to dodge left and right to dodge right. Tilt them backwards to dodge backwards. Hold the Wii-mote and nunchuck vertically. Tilt them inward to block your face. Hold the Wii-mote and nunchuck parallel to the ground to block your body. Wii Boxing punches The harder the punch the longer it takes for your boxer to recover Don't keep punching. Wait until your glove stops moving then punch again. Keep a good rhythm in boxing. Practice with the bag punching mini game to get your boxing timing just right. Hold the Wii-mote and nunchuck vertical and punch for a high jab. Hold them parallel to the ground for a body jab. To perform an upper cut punch in boxing, hold the Wii-mote low and swing your hand up quickly. Push the Wii-mote sideways for a hook. Change the angle of the Wii-motes to change the height of the punch. When punching you can throw jabs (straight on punches), hooks (wide punches), and upper cuts (punches from down low). Tip: If you keep your defense up and dodge a hard punch at the last second, Wii Boxing will slow down and you can throw a hard counter punch. Tip: You can't knock someone out with a jab. No matter how low their life is, you will have to use one of the heavier punches (hook, upper cut, counter punch) to knock them out. Tip: Practice combinations of the various punches until you get one you are good at. Other Wii Boxing notes: If you beat the best boxer (Max) you get silver gloves.

Tennis Training Baseball Training Golf Training Bowling Training Boxing Training. It is a simple game of boxing that involves one or two players brawling it out. There are three rounds maximum, but the game will end if a player gets knocked out. A round lasts for three minutes but can speed up sometimes. To win, simply knock out your opponent. Contents. 1 How to play Boxing 1.1 Punching 1.2 Blocking 1.3 Dodging 1.4 Knockouts (KO) 2 Play Modes 3 Scoring 4 Bonuses 5 Skill Points. How to play Boxing [ edit ] This game is the only game on Wii Sports to use the nunchuk attachment. To control your player you basically need to imagine that the 2 controllers are your players fists. Punching [ edit ] You can jab by moving a hand holding the Wii Remote or nunchuk straight forward. Another way to jab is to make a forward snapping motion with the Wii Remote or nunchuk, as if you were cracking a whip. To do an uppercut, swing the Wii remote or nunchuck upwards from your stomach. To do a hook, swing your arm in an arc to the left or right with the Wii Remote or nunchuck. It doesn't work all of the time, though. Be sure not to punch until your onscreen character appears ready to punch again. The amount of time it takes your character to be prepared to punch again after punching is different if you hit, and is different depending on the punch (a jab takes less time than an uppercut). When you learn the timing, you will rarely make the mistake of making the punching gesture without actually getting your boxer to punch. If you think you are timing your punches correctly and they still aren't being launched accurately with your own, try pulling your fist back slightly before punching. This will make the punch much more likely to register. Blocking [ edit ] There are two forms of blocking in this game. One blocks shots at your head, and the other blocks shots aimed at your body. To block punches aimed at your face, hold your fists close together and put them in front of your face as a real boxer might do. To block bodyshots, keep your fists tight together but hold them down by your stomach. Dodging [ edit ] Lean your body left, right or back to dodge punches. This can also be done by simply moving the Wii Remote and nunchuk together in these directions if you are not feeling very energetic. The second method is also faster. If you dodge a punch you will often notice that the game slows down briefly and makes a "whoosh" sound effect. This is the indicator that you can throw a counter-punch. If you throw the correct kind of punch during that window, it will deal extra damage. You will know if you made a counter-punch by the loud slamming sound coming from the wiimote speaker. A properly aimed counter cannot be dodged, making it invaluable against skilled opponents. An improperly aimed counter will either miss completely or bounce harmlessly off your opponent's glove. Knockouts (KO) [ edit ] There are basically two ways to score a KO against your opponent. The most common way is by repeatedly knocking down your opponent. Each time they are knocked down, the chance they will get up again decreases, and if they do get up, their maximum health will be two units lower than before. The other way is much faster, but also more difficult. The more punches you land in a row without missing before a knockdown, the less likely they are to get up again. To get up from a knockdown down, motion the Wii Remote and Nunchucks as if you are jabbing in an alternating motion. Play Modes [ edit ] Single Player mode - One player versus one computer opponent. How skilled the computer opponent is depends on your skill level. Two Player mode - Battle against another human player. It's a free-for-all for both players and whoever knocks out the other opponent wins the match. Scoring [ edit ] If a fight 'goes the distance' (nobody gets knocked out during the three rounds) it will be decided on points. The points system seems to be based entirely on knockdowns—for example, if you knocked your opponent down twice in round one but he only knocked you down once, then you win round one; if you both knocked each other down once in the round, you tie that round. If you win a round you get a point, and if you tie a round both players get a point. Then the player with the most points wins the fight. If you both knock each other down in a round, or neither of you does, often the round will still be decided in favor of one player or the other. This is done based on health level. Bonuses [ edit ] Some of the opponents are the same people who play other sports such as baseball and tennis. Once your amount of points gets around 1520 you will get to face Matt (The Boxing Master), if you defeat him you get his silver gloves! You can put on the silver gloves by pressing 1 during the black load screen time. Skill Points [ edit ] The only way of improving your skill level is by playing the game in single-player mode. It doesn't get affected in multiplayer. If you win, your skill level will increase and the computer player will be tougher the next time around. The more times you get knocked down in a fight, the fewer skill points you will earn. The higher your skill level, the larger this penalty is. The maximum number of points you can earn for each fight is 76. It is possible to win a match yet still lose points.

Using the implied winning percentages, there is a column labeled “Mkt. Hold” which stands for Market Hold. What is Market Hold and why is it important? In terms of sports betting, Market Hold represents how much vig you are betting into for a given game. Market Hold is important because it will help you bet into favorable markets and give you a better chance at profiting long term. Related: Use our vig calculator to figure out the market hold. Take for example an NFL game, the Kansas City Chiefs at the Baltimore Ravens. As you can see below, each sportsbook has slightly different odds for each side. The best odds for each side are automatically highlighted in green. To calculate market hold, take the best odds for each side, add the implied winning percentages together, and subtract by one. Conceptually, you are seeing how much more (or less) these percentages compare to 100%. If they are greater than 100%, then the market has that much of an edge on you. In some scenarios, you are able to find a negative market hold. In this case, you would have an edge on the market. 2024 Presidential Election Odds. Who will be the next US President? The thinking is that Biden may opt to let Harris take the reigns in the next Presidential election cycle, due to the fact that Biden will be 81-years-old three years from now. The first deciding events are the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary, which usually take place in February. Although the winners of these party-specific races aren’t necessarily shoe-ins for their party’s nominations, the results of these events can impact the odds greatly. By the time Iowans and New Hampshirites gather to make their decisions, bettors in the United Kingdom and around Europe should have a good idea of who is in the running for the nominations of both parties. Despite all the historic precedent of renominating an incumbent, that isn’t a foregone conclusion for the Democrats in 2024. Here’s a look at the current US Presidential Election odds at two UK books: Presidential election odds 2024. Given the recent historic turnout in Black communities in major cities around the country, Harris makes sense as the front-runner right now. It’s reasonable to assume the leaders in those communities could fire that machine back up in 2024 to get behind her. The Democrats may want to maximize that momentum by nominating Harris instead of pushing for a second term for Biden. If they do so, that would be a first. So far in US history, no major party has ever opted not to renominate an incumbent when he’s been eligible for reelection. That’s partially because ousting an incumbent president has proven very difficult in US history. Prior to 2020, it hadn’t happened in nearly 30 years. Here’s the full list of one-term presidents and their tenures in office: Donald Trump, 2017-2021 George H.W. Bush, 1989-1993 Jimmy Carter, 1977-1981 Gerald Ford, 1974-77 Herbert Hoover, 1929-33 William Howard Taft, 1909-13 Benjamin Harrison, 1889-93 Martin Van Buren, 1837-41 John Quincy Adams, 1825-29 John Adams, 1797-1801. If the Democrats do nominate Harris in 2024, it will be historic for other reasons, however. No major party has ever nominated an African-American woman for president, for example. Harris’ nomination could come in the same year as a historic nomination by the other party. The possible scenario has only played out one other time in US history. Can Donald Trump run again in 2024? The short answer is yes. Only Grover Cleveland has served two non-consecutive terms as president in US history, serving his first from 1885-1889 and his second from 1893-1897. Despite the fact that Trump just got the second-most votes for a presidential candidate in US history, there is one big reason why he may have an uphill climb to secure a third nomination from the Republican Party. In June of 2024, Trump will turn 78 years old. That would make him the oldest major-party presidential candidate in US history, setting him up to be pushing 83 when his potential second term would end. By a similar measure, Trump also had more people vote for his opponent than any other incumbent in US history. That’s another reason why the GOP may look elsewhere in 2024. UK books currently favor Mike Pence, Nikki Haley, and Ivanka Trump to be the GOP nominee in 2024. Either Haley or Ivanka Trump would be the first female presidential nominee in the history of the Republican Party. Ivanka Trump would also be the first daughter of a president to receive such a nomination. Election betting explained. Often times, books will refer to markets on these contests as “futures.” That’s because they will settle the bets months or years into the future. The lines on this event are called moneylines or straight bets. That means you’re simply picking a winner of the contest, with the margin of victory and other elements irrelevant for these purposes. What to monitor: polling data. Polling data is fluid and changes over the course of an election period. In the early stages like now (May 2019), candidates with the most name recognition tend to poll the strongest. That’s why on the Democratic side former VP Joe Biden and 2016 candidate Bernie Sanders were early polling front-runners. As lower tier candidates who have difficulty fund-raising drop out of the race, and TV debates start crystallizing (or galvanizing) voter opinion, the numbers begin to consolidate around one-to-two front-runners heading into the primaries. For simplicity purposes, monitor two well-respected polling aggregators: Real Clear Politics : Consolidates and links to the most respected polls. FiveThirtyEight Polls : Does the same but presents the information in a different way. Top 2024 US Presidential Contenders. Democrats. In US history, no major party has ever failed to renominate an incumbent for reelection when he’s been eligible for another term. UK books feel that the Democrats will break that tradition in 2024, however, nominating Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris instead. Other frontrunners at these books include NY Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg. Republicans. While Donald Trump is the frontrunner at UK books right now, current Vice President Mike Pence is the next top contender. After that, the field contains former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley and Trump’s daughter Ivanka. 2024 Presidential betting tips. In terms of presidential elections, the candidates who most represent the opposite end of the spectrum ideologically often fare the best. For example, Barack Obama and Donald Trump were about as different as could be. That’s usually following a two-term president, however. As 2024 will come at the tail end of Joe Biden’s first term and he may run for reelection as the incumbent, that typical wisdom may prove unreliable. Watch candidates’ fundraising and polling as the cycle nears. That will be an indicator into which candidates to back at the books. Can you bet in the US? So far, no states have allowed sportsbooks within their borders to take action on the results of any US elections. If that changes to any degree, TheLines will keep you updated on the progress of that movement.

With up to the minute presidential bet odds bookmark this page and check back often. How Odds On Elections Are Calculated. Presidential betting odds are calculated using an aggregated weighted index including numbers from: Betfair Exchange Betway PredictIt. As of early 2021, only Betfair is offering odds because they are the only bookmaker taking bets on the next election. We assume Betway and PredictIt will be taking bets at some point and those odds will be added in. Once all three bookmakers publish odds, you can use the chart above to view odds from all of them at once, weighted, or check an individual market. A betting exchange (Betfair Exchange, PredicIt) lets people bet against each other. The bookmaker (Betway) takes less risk but will take a small percentage of winnings. Election betting is often referred to as “futures” because it is a wager on a specific, future event. Most election wagers are moneyline bets or straight bets. It’s a straight forward wager normally with no spread involved. For a sporting event, you are bidding on which team will win. For betting on the presidential election, you are bidding on which candidate will win. How Are The Presidential Election Betting Percentages Calculated. When comparing the presidential odds, a plus symbol means that the option is an underdog. The minus symbol means the option is a favorite to win. When Trump’s election odds are set at -125, presidential bet odds give Republicans a 55.56% chance of winning. How Accurate Are The Betting Odds For The Election. As with any wager, it’s important to look at the sources of information that lead people to choose one bet or another. In this case, news coverage and election polling are common sources of information. Prior to the 2016 election, people commonly trusted reliable polling numbers. That’s changed in the 2018 and 2020 elections. In particular, polls leading up to the 2020 elections predicted the Democrats would gain in the US House of Representatives and would take bake the US Senate. Neither of these occurred. So, how accurate are the betting odds? They change daily (and even hourly) based on peoples’ perceptions of who will win the election. If Trump continues to campaign for the 2024 election, the odds could continue to be as volatile as they were in 2020 because of his unpredictability. 2024 Election Key Dates. Many of the key election dates are set months or years in advance. As of early 2021, only two dates have been set for the 2024 election cycle. Primary dates and convention dates have yet to be set. Here are some of the key dates that could affect polling numbers for the 2020 US Presidential election: November 5, 2024 : US Presidential Election January 20, 2025 : Swearing-in of the next President. Can You Bet On The 2024 Election In The US? Legal US online sports betting websites do not accept betting on presidential elections or any other political betting. We don’t see this situation changing before the 2024 election. Although some events during 2020 led election betters to believe this could be changing. West Virginia Election Betting. The West Virginia Lottery briefly approved three sports betting companies to open election betting. With sports betting down and casinos closed due to the Coronavirus, the sports betting companies sought different avenues for revenue. Governor Jim Justice quickly rescinded this approval. Election betting is illegal in West Virginia. Looking for more sports betting odds? Check out our Super Bowl Odds, World Series, Stanley Cup, and NBA Finals. FAQs – U.S. Presidential Election Betting And Odds. The most common prop bet is simply who will win the election. It is also possible to wager on other results of the 2024 election. The political betting market includes who will win the popular vote, who will win the Electoral College, or who will control the US House of Representatives. No, due to restrictive regulations against political and election betting, sportsbooks won’t take an election bet. When Nevada state set the regulations for sports betting in 1985, they restricted betting to professional sports. Over the years, Nevada loosened the rules to include college sports and the Olympics. Despite that, the state still does not allow for election betting. There is still talk of Vegas presidential odds, though. Some of the top oddsmakers in Vegas are offering their predictions. They are posting lines, just like they would for other non-sports events, like the Oscars. Although they are prohibited from taking bets, it’s more of a marketing gimmick, for entertainment purposes only. Peoples’ perceptions of the likelihood of an outcome affect the percentages daily, and even hourly. News and current events affect peoples’ perceptions, particularly in a volatile and ever-changing news cycle. In the past, endorsements were a key indicator of the eventual nominee and election winner. The 2016 election, though, ended that trend. That said, endorsements can indicate how an elected official will turn out the vote in their jurisdiction. Polling data can provide a good indicator of the likely outcome of an election. These are, of course, polls and not results and should be taken with a grain of salt. The 2016 election resulted in some of the most traditionally reliable polls being totally off base. The same occurred during the 2020 election, particularly in the US Senate. Some of the most well-respected polls for US election monitoring are RealClear Politics and FiveThirtyEight. The odds markets continue to take into consideration unlikely candidates. In the months leading up to the 2020 election, the odds focused only on Trump and Biden but earlier odds included Senator Bernie Sanders, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and even Vice President Mike Pence – all long-shot candidates. For the 2024 election, because it is still early, there are multiple potential candidates and nominees, including four with the last name Trump.

Hugh Hefner is one hell of a man. He has literally built a respectable sized empire off of getting women to remove their clothes. On top of that, he lives in a mansion with an ever changing set of gorgeous women. I have so much admiration for this man that there won’t even be any Viagra/old age jokes. He was even honored at one of the first New York Friars’ Club roasts to be broadcast on television. Heff started off his career at a time when it was in no way socially acceptable to publish a magazine that contained nudity, but because it offered a product that men wanted all the time (don’t hit up the comments section and deny it, lads, you want it all the time), it became a massive hit and is successful to this day. He and Larry Flynt were true trailblazers not only for the pornography business, but also for freedom of expression and art. Not only that, their contributions to society stand as a glorious and unavoidable middle finger to all things uptight and puritanical. To follow is a list of the top 10 sexiest female sports personalities that have posed for Playboy. We've used the term sports personalities as opposed to athletes because in order to have the freedom to include women involved with sports, but not exclusively athletes, and mostly just for the three gorgeous ladies who as a group, occupy the number one spot. This list is somewhat subjective, so look up others (there are over 20 more athletes/women involved with sports who have posed for the magazine) and “educate” us in the comments section. If any of my family are reading this, you sent me to Catholic school and this is an example of me rebelling against every aspect of the experience. Side note: Heff has yet to respond to my list of requests for the 2014 Winter Olympics edition of Playboy, but it includes the three Canadian sisters who participated in moguls. But they all seem like sweethearts, so it makes me feel guilty to even write this as a joke. Other than that, Jamie Anderson (USA Snowboarder) and Silje Norendal (Norway Snowboarder) and a couple of the Austrians. Damn it, Hefner, you’ve ruined me! 10 Anita Marks – Football: 2002. These days Anita Marks is a radio personality and sideline reporter for football. She has worked for radio stations in Baltimore and the New York area and has covered both the United Football league and the NFL. She currently works for WFAN in New York along with a few other radio stations and is a regular for Giants pre-game shows. Prior to her broadcasting career, she was a women’s football quarterback who played for the Miami Fury and the Florida stingrays from 2000 to 2004. She’s also pretty hot. She posed for Playboy in 2002 and it was simply great. 9 Torrie Wilson and Sable – WWE: 1999, 2003 and 2004 (Between the 2 of them) 8 Katarina Witt – Figure Skating: 1998. This two-time Olympic gold medalist and four-time world champion posed naked for Playboy, which was pretty awesome. Interesting little fact: she posed at 33 years old. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by this but, athletes age really well. In her photo-shoot, she said that part of her goal was to shed the image of the cute ice princess that figure skaters usually have. Goal completed. 7 Ineta Radevica – Track and Field: 2004. Ever hear the quote "legs till Monday?" Radevica posed before the 2004 Summer Olympics during which she placed 13th in triple jump and 20th in long jump. I’m not concerned with her performance in sport at this point because she is one fantastic looking woman, and in an article like this, that’s what counts. The Latvian never won medals in World Championships or the Olympics but while at the University of Nebraska she won two NCAA Championships. I’ve never said this before in my life but GO CORNHUSKERS! 6 Katharina Scholz – Field Hockey: 2008. There was an old commercial, for some product I can't remember, featuring a guy playing field hockey with a bunch of women and being roughed up. I can also remember thinking that it looks like a fun time. But enough about my sadomasochism. Scholz was a member of the 2008 German Olympic field hockey team. In that same year she posed for Playboy and if I had seen it back then, I would have cheered for Germany. 5 Christy Hemme – WWE: 2005. This is a stranger entry as Christy Hemme needed to ask her father for permission to pose for Playboy. Pops was a slight roadblock for Christy before she posed for Playboy. Nonetheless, the WWE star got it done and again, I can’t say a bad thing about it, and if you’re a heterosexual male, you probably agree. She’s a model, former wrestler, former wrestling manager, singer in more than one band and currently works as a ring announcer and interviewer. For the purposes of this article however, Christy Hemme is a gorgeous babe without clothes. God bless America! 4 Haley Cope – Swimming: 2004. She’s an Olympic medalist, having won silver in 2004, a multiple time world champion and at one point she was the world record holder for the best 50 meter backstroke. She won all her medals throughout the early 2000’s, participating in both long course and short course swimming events. Her Playboy appearance was in the same year as her Olympic medal, and after that she retired from competing, opting instead for a career as a coach; operating her own swimming school. 3 Maria Kanellis – WWE: 2008. This woman is ridiculously good looking in addition to being multi-talented. Interesting how those two can go together. She was a WWE wrestler for years and has also wrestled with a number of other promotions. She also released an album, but it didn’t do so well, so the jury is still out on whether her “multi-talented” label can include singing. She has however, had some success acting in various small roles and in a couple of appearances on reality TV shows. She was originally against the idea of posing for Pl+ayboy, due to pressures from her family, but in 2008, she did it. Thank God. 2 Ashley Harkleroad – Tennis: 2008. Oh Ashley Harkleroad, the first professional tennis player to ever pose for Playboy. It’s interesting that Jennifer Capriati dated a male adult entertainer, Dale Dabone, for years but never tried out the business. On the other hand it’s devastating that Maria Sharapova and Anna Kournikova never decided to get in touch with Mr. Hefner. In terms of her tennis career, however, she was never among the top players in any way other than looks. She said in an interview that Amanda Beard’s Playboy appearance was an inspiration to do her own. After the 2008 French Open, she announced the decision and after seeing the results, I think you’ll agree with me that it was a good one.
What to know as online gaming, sports betting becomes legal in Michigan. In-person sports betting in Michigan began at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at MGM Grand Detroit and Greektown casinos. MotorCity Casino begins at 10am, March 12. (Photo by Edward Pevos | MLive) Starting noon Friday, Michigan residents can place a bet from anywhere in the state using their phone or computer. Ten commercial and tribal casino operators and their affiliated platform providers were given the green light to launch online sports betting Friday. Eight of those will also be offering online casino games. Michigan isn’t the first state to launch a regulated online gaming industry, but is unique in the sense that the framework for online gaming and sports betting incorporates both commercial and tribal casinos. Under state law, only licensed casinos in Michigan — the 24 tribal casinos and three Detroit casinos — are allowed to offer online gaming and sports betting options. Friday’s launch comes just over a year after Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed bipartisan legislation to allow sports betting and internet gaming for those 21 and older in Michigan. In-person sportsbooks opened around the state in March 2020, but setting up rules for online gaming took months of work — in part because the gaming control board had to set up an all-new framework that incorporated the licensing process, standards and regulations and penalties for noncompliance. Michigan’s mature gaming market and robust fanbases for several pro and college sports teams have operators thrilled about the possibilities for online gaming, and they say prospective bettors are just as excited. “We have many tens of thousands of customers that have already pre-registered with us,” said Adam Greenblatt, CEO of BetMGM. “It’s actually very surprising and somewhat daunting. The numbers are bigger than we’ve seen in any other state at this point, which is great.” In a recent news release, Michigan Gaming Control Board Director Richard Kalm called the launch “a new era” for gaming and sports betting. “Michigan residents love sports and, judging by inquiries we’ve received, eagerly anticipate using mobile devices to place bets through the commercial and tribal casinos,” he said. “Online gaming and sports betting will provide the casinos with new ways to engage with customers while the state and local communities will benefit from taxes and payments on wagering revenue.” Who’s launching Friday? Ten casino operators and their platform operators have been authorized to launch online sports betting or both online gaming and sports betting at noon Friday, according to the Michigan Gaming Control Board. Others are expected to come online in the coming days and weeks once the MGCB finishes the vetting process for their platforms.
New study suggests link between problem gambling and suicidality in young adults in Great Britain. Results from a cross-sectional online survey of young adults between the ages of 16-24 suggests that both men and women are at increased risk of suicidality if they engage in problem gambling. Suicide is a leading cause of death of young adults worldwide. Research also suggests that the suicide rate has increased for young adults in recent years, despite the prevalence of factors such as alcohol and drug misuse decreasing. Explanations suggested for the increase in suicide rate in this age group include the role of social media, online bullying, exam and lifestyle stress, and increasing insecurity among young people. However, other factors are probably also involved, and might be further compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. Problem gambling. Gambling has been neglected as a public health issue. Online gambling is the largest growth sector in Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) and now accounts for more than one third of the total gambling market. Online betting and gambling are also known to have one of the highest levels of association with problem gambling. Considering the shifts in risk-taking behaviors among young adults, there has been an urgent need to examine recent data on gambling and suicidality. This need prompted the undertaking of a new study from academics from City, University of London and University of Glasgow, published in the journal, Lancet Public Health . It investigated whether problem gambling is related to suicidality in young adults aged 16-24, and also looked for any differences between men and women. In the study, data from the Emerging Adults Gambling Survey (a cross-sectional, online survey of young adults, who were selected from a YouGov online panel) was analyzed. The researchers looked for associations between problem gambling (defined as a score of eight or higher on the "Problem Gambling Severity Index' [PGSI]) and suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts in the year before survey completion. This was investigated through a series of statistical models, with and without adjustment for sociodemographic factors, alcohol use, video gaming, anxiety, loneliness, and impulsivity. The study found that 37% of male respondents (24 out of 62 men) who had attempted suicide in the previous year, had survey scores which were indicative of problem gambling. The comparable figure for those men who had not attempted suicide or had thoughts of suicide in the previous year was 3.6% (38 out of 1,077 men). In female respondents who had attempted suicide in the previous year, 14.5% (13 out of 85 women) had survey scores indicative of a gambling problem. For those female respondents who had not attempted suicide or had thoughts of suicide, the figure was 2% (25 out of 1184 women). These findings suggest that problem gambling is associated with suicide attempts in both young men and young women. This association persisted after adjusting for alcohol use, video gaming, anxiety, impulsivity, loneliness, life satisfaction, and other factors, which suggests that other mechanisms, such as the severity and multiplicity of harms experienced, or gambling to cope with life stressors, might underpin this relationship. As such the authors of the study suggest that young people with problem-gambling behaviors should be considered at risk for suicide attempts, and that more research must be undertaken to more fully understand the association in the rapidly changing gambling environment. The UK gambling regulator has described COVID-19 as accelerating the growth of online gambling. It is against this backdrop that the current study was published in a gambling-focused of issue of The Lancet Public Health , launching a new The Lancet Public Health commission on gambling. Over the coming year, the Commission will be investigating ways to reduce gambling-related harms around the world, and welcomes research submissions aiming to prevent gambling harms. Commenting on the study, Sally McManus, co-author and Senior Lecturer in Health at the School of Health Sciences, City, University of London said, "This study highlights the importance of gender disaggregating analysis. Gambling research has tended to focus on men, however women with problem gambling behaviors should also be recognized as at higher risk of suicidality."
Barron's. I’m a Sports Fan. But I Don’t Like to Bet on the Games. Here’s Why. Order Reprints Print Article. I go back a long way as a sports fan. I started attending New York Rangers games at the old Madison Square Garden in the ’60s, when very few players wore helmets and at least one goalie didn’t bother donning a protective face mask. I have attended games at 15 of the 30 Major League Baseball stadiums across North America. I have watched countless NCAA basketball tournament games, and I was a huge fan of March Madness long before it assumed that moniker. But I don’t enjoy betting on sports. Call me a stick-in-the-mud, especially with the Super Bowl fast approaching on Feb. 3. These days, the world of sports gambling, which is growing quickly, is having the time of its life. So a distaste for betting is like being on the outside looking in at a particularly boisterous party. What’s my problem? I find it very stressful knowing that a bet of mine rides on a player or a team I don’t like or follow. Whatever happened to just enjoying the beauty of sports? Many of these games have compelling story lines with drama, perseverance, and heart-pounding comebacks or collapses. There’s no need to add money lines, over-unders, and point spreads to the mix. I’ll take my sports straight up, thank you. I often feel in the minority these days. Many sports fans seem to need a wager to spice up sporting events. A year ago, the American Gaming Association predicted that about $4.7 billion would be bet on the Super Bowl—with only a tiny sliver, $138.5 million, through licensed sports books in Nevada. Meanwhile, the gaming landscape is rapidly evolving, with online and mobile-phone platforms coming to the fore. A seminal event occurred last May when the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a law that had restricted sports betting in most states. It opened the door for a lot more legal betting on numerous sports across the country, as more states, outside of Nevada and led by New Jersey, entered the fray. Major U.S. sports leagues like Major League Baseball, the National Football League, and the National Basketball Association support legalized sports betting, convinced that it’s better to have it out in the open where it can be regulated then to have it consigned to the shadows. And, of course, they see it as a way to boost revenues, too. I’m not making a moral judgment here. I understand that it can be a thrill when a bet goes your way. But wagering is largely a fool’s errand over the long haul, a winning hand here or there notwithstanding. Many fans consider themselves sports-gambling experts, only to see their picks—and their money—go up in smoke when the game is over. For many years, when I’ve ponied up $5 or $10 to enter the annual NCAA basketball tournament pool at the office, it has become pretty clear that knowledge of the sport usually doesn’t translate into winning. Invariably, someone would guess correctly on a few upsets, and maybe even back the right team all the way to the championship. I won such a pool outright one time, in 1988, thanks to Oklahoma, that year’s runner-up. Not exactly a stellar record on my part. Editor's Choice. Some gambling information can be useful. Point spreads, in which oddsmakers try to level the playing field by giving the underdog a few extra points to lure more bettors to the wager, offer context to a coming contest. Heading into Sunday’s AFC Championship, the New England Patriots are three-point underdogs against the Kansas City Chiefs, the home team. If you bet on the Chiefs, you should know that the team has to win by more than three points for the wager to pay off. That’s all well and good, but it’s still little more than guesswork. And today point spreads seem almost quaint. Nowadays, there are various so-called proposition or prop bets—side bets that occur regarding an event that doesn’t affect the outcome. Who will score the first touchdown? How many points will teams score in each quarter? A newer wrinkle is in-game wagering, which has been big in Europe and is emerging in the U.S. These bets take place as the game is unfolding. For example, which soccer player will score the next goal? All of this leads me to wonder if the actual game, even one that’s thrilling, has taken a back seat to the gambling industrial complex. At this rate, in-game betting could offer wagers at Little League games on how many hot dogs a team will eat at the snack bar. Or how many ground balls will be hit to the shortstop in the bottom of the third. Or in which inning will the opposing coaches get into an argument over an umpire’s bad call—the possibilities are limitless. Newsletter Sign-up. Review & Preview. How Do Odds Work in Betting? If you are planning to start betting, be it casino gambling, sports betting, or any other type, it's important to understand the odds. It would be preposterous and absurd to think about placing bets without having a good grip on the main types of betting odds and the ability to read and interpret the various associated formats. The three main types of betting odds are fractional (British) odds, decimal (European) odds, and American (moneyline) odds. These are simply different ways of presenting the same thing and hold no difference in terms of payouts. This means that a chance (percentage probability) of an event occurring can be converted and presented in any of the aforementioned types of odds. How Fractional Odds Work. Fractional odds (aka British odds, UK odds, or traditional odds) are popular among British and Irish bookies. These are typically written with a “slash (/)” or a “hyphen (-),” e.g. 6/1 or 6-1 and announced as “six-to-one.” Fractional odds are used by some of the world’s largest bookmakers, making them the most preferred odds across the globe. Therefore, the total (potential) return on a stake can be stated as: For instance, one of the major sports betting websites listed the following fractional odds for futures betting on the team to win the 2017-18 NBA Championship. Below is a selection of the three teams that had the lowest odds of winning. Golden State Warriors: 10/11 Houston Rockets: 9/4 Cleveland Cavaliers: 7/1. It can quickly be determined that the Golden State Warriors are the favorites while the odds on Houston and Cleveland winning are longer. That is, one wins only $10 against every $11 wagered on Golden State to be the champions. Meanwhile, one wins $9 against each $4 (i.e. 3.25 times) put at stake for Houston to win, which is a bit less probable. For Cleveland, one wins $7 against each $1 bet. In the above example, if you bet $100 on Golden State to win, you could make a $90.91 profit [$100 x (10/11)], and could get back your initial stake of $100, resulting in a total payout of $190.91. However, if you wager $100 on Houston to win, you could receive a profit of $225 [$100 x (9/4)], in addition to the $100 initial stake leading to a total payout of $325. The potential profit for a Cleveland win would be even higher, as you could make a profit of $700 [$100 x (7/1)]. With the initial stake of $100 being returned, it would make for a total payout of $800. How Decimal Odds Work. Decimal odds (aka European odds, digital odds, or continental odds) are popular in continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. These are a bit easier to understand and work with. The favorites and underdogs can be spotted instantaneously by looking at the numbers. The decimal odds number represents the amount one wins for every $1 wagered. For decimal odds, the number represents the total payout, rather than the profit. In other words, your stake is already included in the decimal number (no need to add back your stake), which makes its total payout calculation easier. The total (potential) return on a stake can be calculated as: For instance, one of the renowned betting websites priced the candidates to win the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election. Here, we list the decimal odds for the candidates and the biggest long shot among the candidates listed by the bookmaker. Donald Trump: 4.00 Joe Biden: 1.3. These numbers merely represent the amount one could win against each $1 put at stake. Therefore, if one bets $100 on Donald Trump to be re-elected as president, this person could make a total payout of $400 ($100 x 4.00). This amount includes the initial stake of $100, giving a net profit of $300. Similarly, a bettor could make a total payout of $130 ($100 x 1.3) if they successfully bet $100 on Joe Biden. Deducting $100 from this return gives the bettor the net profit earned. Reviewing the prices that the bookmaker has set for each candidate, it can be determined that according to the bookmaker, the probability of Biden (favorite) winning the election is higher than that for Trump. The higher the total payout (i.e. the higher the decimal odd), the less probable (and riskier) it is for the listed candidate to win. How American (Moneyline) Odds Work. Let’s understand this with the help of an example: One of the popular betting websites priced the NCAA "Sweet 16" men's basketball game between Duke and Syracuse on March 23, 2018, with the following moneyline odds. In this matchup, there is a big difference between the two odds, indicating a much higher probability of Duke winning the game and advancing to the next round of the NCAA Tournament. Key Takeaways. The three main types of betting odds are fractional (British) odds, decimal (European) odds, and American (moneyline) odds. These are simply different ways of presenting the same thing, and hold no difference in terms of payouts. Fractional odds are the ratio of the amount (profit) won to the stake; Decimal odds represent the amount one wins for every $1 wagered; and American odds, depending on the negative or positive sign, either indicate the amount one needs to wager to win $100 or the amount one would win for every $100 staked. The Bottom Line. If you are planning to enter the betting or the gambling world, it is important to be able to understand and interpret all types of odds well. Once you have mastered the three popular types of odds (fractional, decimal, and American), you can move towards a more detailed read on this topic and find out how the house always wins. Please refer to Understanding the Math Behind Betting Odds & Gambling for the conversion between the different formats of odds, the conversion of odds into implied probabilities, and the differences between the true chances of an outcome as well as the odds on display.
Betting Odds Explained – A Beginner’s Guide to Gambling. Betting odds tell you how likely an event is to happen They also tell you how much money you will win However, at first, they may seem confusing and complex Our comprehensive guide takes you step-by-step to explain them. If you’re new to betting, one of the first things you should do is learn how betting odds work. It’s critically important because it allows you to understand how likely an event is to happen, and what your potential winnings will be. At first, it may appear confusing, however, read our guide and let us explain it to you. In gambling, odds represent the ratio between the amounts staked by parties to a wager or bet. Thus, odds of 3 to 1 mean the first party (the bookmaker) stakes three times the amount staked by the second party (the bettor). What is Probability? The most basic level, betting provides you with the ability to predict the outcome of a certain event, and if your prediction is correct, you will win money. For any given event, there are a certain number of outcomes. Take rolling a dice for instance. If someone rolls a dice, there are six possible outcomes. Therefore, if you bet that the person rolls a вЂone’, there is a 16.67% chance that will happen. What betting odds merely do is present how likely the event is to happen. Bookies most frequently in the UK do this as a fraction, i.e. 4/7, whilst the vast majority also offer the ability to view them as decimals. Again, let us talk you through them. All will become clear. Using Betting Odds to Calculate Probability. Whenever you see two numbers separated by a trailing slash, i.e. 10/1, this is known as fractional odds. From this, you can calculate how likely a given event is to happen with a calculation. For ease of explanation, let’s replace the numbers with letters i.e. 4/1 becomes A/B. Here is the calculation: Probability (%) = B / (A+B). Hooray! We’re making progress. Given a fraction, we can now tell how likely (the probability) what we’re going to bet on will happen. Now let’s figure out how much money can be won using betting odds. Using Betting Odds to Calculate Winnings. Betting odds allow you to calculate how much money you will win if you make a bet. Let’s use the same examples as before, with the same replacement of numbers for letters, i.e. 4/1 becomes A/B. Quite simply, for every value of B that you bet, you will win A, plus the return of your stake. 9/1 for every ВЈ1 you bet, you will win ВЈ9. 4/1 for every ВЈ1 you bet, you will win ВЈ4. 1/1 for every ВЈ1 you bet, you will win ВЈ1. 1/4 for every ВЈ4 you bet, you will win ВЈ1. What About Decimals? Decimals are far more common on exchanges, such as Betfair, but all leading betting sites do give you the option to view betting odds in this format. They are an alternative to seeing betting odds in the fraction format, and in our opinion, are easier to work out. Here is the calculation: winnings = (odds * stake) – stake. Let’s illustrate it with some examples. 9.0 can be calculated as (9.0 * ВЈ10 stake) – ВЈ10 stake = ВЈ80 winnings. 4.0 can be calculated as (4.0 * ВЈ10 stake) – ВЈ10 stake = ВЈ30 winnings. 2.5 can be calculated as (2.5 * ВЈ10 stake) – ВЈ10 stake = ВЈ15 winnings. 1.25 can be calculated as (1.25 * ВЈ10 stake) – ВЈ10 stake = ВЈ2.50 winnings. You can use our bet calculator to help you calculate winnings. USE BET CALCULATOR. Decimal Odds Versus Fractional Odds. In truth, one isn’t better than the other but there is certainly a trend emerging towards decimal odds. Historically fractional odds were used in the UK, especially on racetracks and on the high street. There are two key differences. Generally, decimal odds are easier to understand. Based on this, there has a movement to attract more people to horse racing by making it more accessible to the average punter. Ten years ago, if you were going to Cheltenham, all the odds would be displayed as fractional odds. Now, they’re largely all in decimals. Don’t hesitate to check out our exclusive Premier League Betting Offers ! The second difference between the formats is that fractional odds only represent winnings, and do not include the returned stake compared to decimals which do include the stake. The transition from fractional odds to decimals largely kicked off with the growing popularity of the betting exchanges such Betfair. For odds to change slightly, it’s really difficult to marginally increase or decrease the probability without creating large fractions which are hard to compute for the punter. How do betting odds work? Betting odds are used to assess the likelihood of an event happening. Less likely events tend to have higher odds and offer larger reward, while more likely events have a lower risk attached and therefore a lower reward. Your winnings depend on how much you wager on a given set of odds. Betting odds are seen in a range of formats – they are most commonly seen as fractions but are also sometimes presented as decimals. A quick introduction to betting odds. Decimal and fraction odds might seem confusing, especially if you’re not familiar with betting and all the betting terms and types . This handy guide is ideal for anyone new to betting, or if you’re struggling to read the odds. It contains a range of useful tips and tricks that will help you better understand just how betting odds work, so you can choose odds and place your bets with more confidence. Here, we will highlight: The key points of betting odds and what you should look out for. How to read betting odds and make them work in your favour. Tips and tricks to help you understand betting odds more easily. What are betting odds? Betting odds are used to present the likelihood of an outcome, as well as help you understand how much you could win from a bet. They are often written out as a fraction (e.g. 2/1) or a decimal (e.g. 3.0). Betting odds can be applied to anything that has a set outcome and are often seen in sport, entertainment, and politics. The odds measure the probability of a certain outcome, such as the result of a sports game or reality TV show, or whether a certain party gets the majority vote in an election. How do betting odds work? Betting odds are used to determine probability and calculate the winnings from a bet and are often seen in their decimal or fractional form. Odds are commonly recognised as being even, long, or short. Even odds. When something is just as likely to happen as not, it is given even odds. These are presented as 1/1 in fractional odds, or 2.0 in decimal odds. In this instance your winnings would be the same as your stake. For example: In the case of 1/1 odds, you win £1 for every £1 you bet. Therefore, if you bet £10 you’d win £10, and return £20 in total (your £10 stake plus your £10 winnings). Long odds. If something is statistically less likely to happen, it is given long odds. This means you have the potential to win more than you would on even odds, but the risk of losing is higher. For example: In the case of 10/1 long odds (or 11.0 in decimal form), you could win £10 for every £1 you bet, and therefore your winnings exceed your stake. A winning £10 bet at 10/1 odds would result in £100 winnings plus your £10 stake, therefore returning £110 in total. Short odds. If something has a higher probability of happening, it is given short odds. While short odds are more likely to happen, the winnings will be smaller, and therefore you’ll need to stake higher amounts for a bigger return. For example: In the case of 1/10 short odds (1.10 in decimal form), you could win £1 for every £10 you bet. Therefore, a winning £10 bet would result in £1 in winnings, amounting to a return of £11 (your £1 winnings plus your £10 stake). How to read betting odds. Betting odds are most commonly presented as a fraction or a decimal in the UK. Moneyline odds, which are common in the US, are also becoming more popular. Reading odds can be confusing if you’re not familiar with what the different sets of numbers reflect. Here, we explain how to read decimal, fraction, and moneyline odds. Understanding decimal odds. The simple rule of thumb with decimal betting odds is the bigger the number, the larger the return will be. For example, decimal odds of 3.75 will result in larger winnings than decimal odds of 1.75. To work out your winnings from decimal odds, simply multiply the odds by your stake. The resulting number reflects both your winnings and your stake. For example: If you bet £10 on odds of 3.75, you would return £37.50 – this means you’ll have won £27.50 (£37.50 – your £10 stake). Understanding fractional odds. Fractional odds are a more traditional way of displaying odds in the UK. Appearing in fraction form (e.g. 2/1), you must first work out your winnings and then add on your stake in order to determine your total return. The best way to calculate your returns from fractional odds is to follow a formula: This might look complicated, but we promise it will make sense when you plug your numbers in. For example: If you bet £10 on a 5/2 bet, your calculation would look like: For longer odds with a larger return, look out for odds where the first half of the fraction is larger than the second half. For example: Odds of 5/1 will return greater winnings than odds of 1/5. If you were to stake £10 on odds of 5/1, then your return would be £60. However, if you were to stake £10 on odds of 1/5, your return would only be £12. Understanding moneyline odds. The moneyline shows you how much you have to bet in order to win £100. If you are presented odds of -200 (because this event is more likely) you will have to stake £200 to return £300 (your £200 stake plus £100 winnings). In order to calculate the potential payout from a moneyline bet, simply follow this formula. Converting decimal odds to fractions. Converting decimal betting odds to fractions takes a bit of basic maths knowledge. First, take your decimal odds and subtract 1 from the number. For example: If you have decimal odds of 3.75, subtract 1 and you are left with 2.75. These are odds of 2.75/1. Odds need to be made up of whole numbers, so we need to take 2.75 and turn it into a whole number. The easiest way in this instance is to multiply 2.75 by 100 and move the decimal along two places. This gives us 275/100. From there, we can work our way to finding the smallest equivalent fraction. In this case, we can divide our fraction by 25, leaving us with fractional odds of 11/4 – previously 3.75 when presented as a decimal. Now that you understand betting odds and how they work, you can begin to use them to your advantage. Browse all the latest sports betting odds or sign up to Grosvenor Casinos today to get started. In simplest terms, odds are a way of expressing the relationship between the number of favorable outcomes in a given situation versus the number of unfavorable outcomes. Usually, this is expressed as a ratio (like 1 : 3 or 1/3 ). Calculating odds is central to the strategy of many games of chance, like roulette, horse racing and poker. Whether you're a high-roller or simply a curious newcomer, learning how to calculate odds can make games of chance a more enjoyable (and profitable!) activity. David Jia Academic Tutor Expert Interview. 14 January 2021. Let's say we bet that we'll roll either a one or a two. In this case, there's two possibilities where we win - if the dice shows a two, we win, and if the dice shows a one, we also win. Thus, there are two favorable outcomes. David Jia Academic Tutor Expert Interview. 14 January 2021. In the example with the die, if we bet that we'll roll either a one or a two, that means we'll lose if we roll a three, four, five, or six. Since there are four ways that we can lose, that means that there are four unfavorable outcomes. Another way to think of this is as the Number of total outcomes minus the number of favorable outcomes. When rolling a die, there are a total of six possible outcomes - one for each number on the die. In our example, then, we would subtract two (the number of desired outcomes) from six. 6 - 2 = 4 unfavorable outcomes. Similarly, you may subtract the number of unfavorable outcomes from the total number of outcomes to find the number of favorable outcomes. David Jia Academic Tutor Expert Interview. 14 January 2021. You may choose to represent this ratio as a fraction. In this case, our odds are 2/4 , simplified as 1/2. Note - 1/2 odds don't mean we have a one-half (50%) chance of winning. In fact, we have a one-third chance of winning. Remember when expressing odds that odds are a ratio of favorable outcomes to unfavorable outcomes - not a numerical measurement of how likely we are to win.

US Sports Betting For Dummies. Betting Guide. Home В» Betting Guides В» US Sports Betting For Dummies. Sports betting is a fun and exciting way to make sports interesting but it can be confusing and difficult to understand how to bet on sport. Don’t worry though, our sports betting for dummies guide will explain to you the basics of sports betting and begin your journey as a sports bettor! Table of contents. How To Read Betting Odds Sports Bet Types Cash-Out Sports Betting for Dummies In-Game/Live Sports Betting for Dummies Betting Sites For Beginners Bet Responsibly Value Bets and How To Identify Them. How To Read Betting Odds. Betting odds indicate how likely one outcome is in comparison to the other. While there are different ways to display odds, you’ll usually see odds displayed in a numerical or fractional form. In fractional form, you’ll see something like 1/3 or 3/1: The lower number on top (1/3) indicates that the team is favored to win by three times more than they are to lose. The higher number on top (3/1) indicates that the team is three times more likely to lose than they are to win. Sports Bet Types. What Does Moneyline Mean? Simply put, a moneyline bet is betting on a team to win the game. The moneyline odds are determined by the likelihood of that team winning. How Spread Betting Works. Betting the spread is when you bet on either the favorite or underdog to cover the points spread. The point spread is the number of points sportsbooks believe the favorite to better than the underdog. How To Bet On Over/Under (Totals) Over Under betting is based on how many total points/goals/runs will be scored in the game. Example: If the total is 43.5 points, 44 or more points are needed to win the “over” bet – 43 points or less are needed to win the “under” bet. If the total is 50 points, and the final score hit 50 points right on the number, that’s considered a push – or a tie. In that case, the bettor will get back their original investment. Points Betting For Dummies. This is a new and innovative way of betting on sports, but what is points betting? Points betting rewards the bettor for how right they are. For instance, let’s say you’re betting on basketball where the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks. If you bet $10 on the Nets, who are favored by three points (-3), and they win by seven points, you will have won $40 because they covered the spread by four points. How To Bet On Futures. A future bet is based on any future outcome. Most futures bets are on teams to win a championship, a conference/division, a certain amount of games or a total number of wins. However, there are also futures bets on individual players to win achievement awards such as NFL MVP or reach a certain number in a statistical category, like an NFL player to top the rushing yards table for that season. How to Parlay Bet. A parlay bet combines two or more individual wagers and is dependent on each bet winning together. As a result, a parlay bet pays out higher because the chances of winning dependent on more than one outcome. For example, if you bet New York Giants, Chicago Bears, and Dallas Cowboys in a parlay and they all win their individual games, you win. However, if New York Giants and Chicago Bears win, but Dallas loses, you lose the parlay. What Is A Teaser Bet? A teaser bet has similar characteristics to a parlay bet, in that all of the teams or totals you picked have to win. However, in a “teaser” bet, the point-spreads and totals are adjusted to lower the bettor’s risk. For instance, if New York is favored by 10 points, you can lower the spread down to three points and so on with other games that you chose. The drawback with teasers, though, is that the bettors will typically wager a lot more than they’ll win. If the teaser loses, it could be a sizeable monetary collapse. How To Bet On Props (Specials) A prop bet based on a proposition (novelty, side bet) that something will happen that won’t affect the outcome of the game. Examples: Will Todd Gurley rush for more or less than 1.5 touchdowns? Will Tom Brady throw for more or less than 315.5 yards? Will Stephen Curry make more or less than 5.5 3-point field goals? Cash-Out Sports Betting for Dummies. Many sportsbooks offer their customers the chance to вЂcash-out’ before the event has finished and their sports wager has been settled. The cash-out feature is a way for a bettor to lock-in profit from their sports wager, or minimize their losses. The size of the payout is determined at the time of cashing out your bet and depends on the likelihood of the bet winning. For example, let’s say you bet with DraftKings Sportsbook and you’ve wagered an NFL parlay bet on three matches. You picked the correct outcome in the first two matches and the final match is yet to play. In this situation, some sportsbooks will offer you the chance to cash-out your bet. If you’re offered more than your stake to cash-out, then you can lock-in profit from your bet and cash out. However, let’s say you backed Clemson University to win on the moneyline in a College Football game. It’s the fourth quarter and Clemson University is losing by a touchdown and don’t look like they’re going to win. You can minimize your loss by cashing out your bet with the sportsbook. To sum up, cash-out is a way for a sports bettor and a sportsbook to minimize their losses/risk. In-Game/Live Sports Betting for Dummies. Live betting also known as in-play betting is exactly what it says. The ability to wager on a sporting event that has already begun, but has not finished yet. There are many Sportsbooks that offer their customers live betting capability, which are: Betting Sites For Beginners. Bet Responsibly. Gambling is a fun way to enhance the excitement of sport, but it is important to know how to bet responsibly and stay in control. It may sound simple, but betting what you can afford to lose is the best advice ever given. If you set aside (for example) $50 each week, you know that is the maximum limit that you can lose – anything you win is a bonus. Now, just because you win $200 early in the week and then lose that, on top of the $50 you set aside, doesn’t mean that you can expand the initial limit you set. Chasing losses is always something that gets gamblers in trouble. Let’s say you’re betting on an NFL game early in the day and lose – that doesn’t mean that you should make a bet that’s double the amount later on. For starters, you probably didn’t do as much research on that latter one, but more importantly, you could put yourself in an even bigger hole. All in all, you shouldn’t look at gambling as a way to be your primary source of income. It should be fun and done responsibly. If you feel your betting is becoming a problem and you feel out of control, seek help at 800-GAMBLER . Value Bets and How To Identify Them. Finding value in miscalculated lines is key to gaining an advantage for yourself against the sportsbooks. For instance, there are certain teams that play much better in their home stadium than they do on the road. Other teams play better against others because of particular matchups – in basketball, one team may have another height advantage over the other, thus giving them a chance at more rebounds and possessions. Sports betting isn’t easy – if it was, everyone would be swimming in money. On nearly every level, it’s up to the bettor to make the best possible choices. Of course, some luck doesn’t hurt, but sometimes you make your own luck. Fortunately, US-Odds has done the hard work for you through our Computer Picks algorithm which calculates bets offering the most value on each sport. Summary. How To Bet on Sports Online. How to Read Sports Odds and Betting Lines. I’ve titled this Sports Betting For Dummies. It’s a tutorial for those who want to start betting on sports or those who want to gain a better understanding of some of the terminology and theory behind it. We’ve all been in the position of learning something new, so please don’t be embarrassed if you don’t grasp these concepts. Instead, contact me via the form at the bottom of this page, and I’ll help you in any way I can. You want to put a few coins on this weekend’s games, or perhaps you just want to be able to decode all of that jibberish you see in the sports section every week. How do you read those sports odds, and what does over/under, minus/plus, giving points, taking points mean? WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN? I will painlessly explain all of the mysteries of sports betting 101 aka “Sports Betting for Dummies.” First of all, you have nothing to be ashamed of, you have taken the first and most important step of all – learning! Why waste money on a game that you don’t fully understand? You shouldn’t! That is why you are here now, to learn how it works and how to win! Topic #1 The Point Spread and Totals. Okay, you look at the games for Sunday and you see the betting lines displayed something similar to; San Francisco -5 vs. St. Louis 41. You may look at that and be intimidated and feel helpless, but I’m going to decode this little bugger for you. This is the betting line – not the odds. The odds are what you are to be paid (covered later). How to Read and Bet Point Spreads. Whenever you see a team with a (-) negative number next to them, (-5 in this case), it means that team is favored to win by that number of points. See, that wasn’t too difficult, was it? Sometimes you will see the points displayed as half numbers like San Fran -5.5. If you bet on San Fran, and they win by 6, you win the bet. If they win by 5 or less, you lose. Clear? If not, submit your question in the form at the bottom of the page and ask me. I’m here to help. How to Bet Over/Under. Okay, so the other betting option available to you is the total or вЂOver/Under.’ You can choose to bet that the total points between the two teams will either be greater (OVER) or less than (UNDER) the projected total. Again, if you bet either way and the game ends up being 20-21, for a total of 41 points, then you will receive a refund of your wager amount. Topic # 2 The Moneyline or Straight-Up wager. This is where you simply wager on which team will win the game outright, no point spreads, no BS…just the straight up winner. Although this may appear to be easier, you will pay for it as the odds (payout) will reflect the lack of a point spread. If you wager on a favorite, then you will win less than with a point spread, but if you wager on the underdog…and win…you will receive and even greater win amount based on the higher risk taken. Topic # 3 How to Read Sports Betting Odds. For reading the fraction odds , I strongly recommend converting them to a decimal. This will make figuring out your potential win much much easier! To do this, just like in 2nd grade, you take the first number and divide it by the second. So if your odds read 7/4, you simply divide (7) by (4), which equals 1.75. That is the decimal form odds , now you simply multiply (1.75) by whatever your wager amount is to figure out your potential profit. In this case, if you were to risk $100, then your potential win would be $175 profit if you are correct! Also, you will receive your initial bet amount of $100 as well, for a total of $275 in your hand. Now for American Style Sports Odds. Typically, when you are betting on the point spread, as in topic #1 above, the odds are displayed or implied to be (-110), which is known as American Style odds. The American Style odds format is based on $100. When the number, is displayed as a negative number (-110), it indicates how much money you must risk to realize a profit of $100. In our scenario, you must wager $110 to win $100 profit. If you do, you will receive $210 when you cash in…the winning amount PLUS your initial wager amount. Topic #4 Now What? Now that you have the basics down, there is only one thing left to discuss – where to bet that is safe . I strongly recommend that you start by wagering on only one pick per day. You don’t want to spread yourself too thin and have your hand in every match available. If you bet that way, you will surely get nickel and dimed out of your bankroll. Spend time studying the teams and choose your best selection available. Decide on a budget of how much you are willing to risk. Now you need a reputable online sportsbook (online sports betting site) to do business. There are millions of sites out there, but only a handful that will treat you right. I deal with a few main sites in my personal online sports betting, Bovada, BetOnline, and MyBookie . Check these sites out and see which one fits you best. Maybe you will take advantage of the bonuses at those sites and then decide which one you want to continue to use. I prefer to use multiple sites, so I have a selection of lines to choose from to get the best available payout! Whether you want to bet $1 or $500, any of these sites will work just fine for you and pay you quickly when you win. If you want more details and options, just go to the sportsbook reviews and ratings page . I hope that I have answered some of the nagging questions about sports betting and how it works. Feel free to use the form below to contact me directly with any question you may have. I’m here to help you understand and win! Good luck! Also, be sure to check out my free sports picks !
How to Bet on Sports for Beginners: 12 Tips to Know. Suchat Pederson/The News Journal via USA TODAY NETWORK. Over the past few years, the emergence of daily fantasy sports has led to a renaissance for conventional sports betting. The anti-gambling stigma that existed for decades is fading in American popular culture, opening the door for a massive, multibillion-dollar legal sports betting industry to emerge. With sports betting now legal in many states, millions of sports fans will be looking to enter the betting market for the first time. But where do you begin if you’re unfamiliar with the terminology? Here’s an introduction into how to bet on sports. We’ll be adding to this series in the coming weeks. How to Bet on Sports for Beginners: 12 Tips. Use the links below to jump to each section. 1. Favorites vs. Underdogs. When the oddsmakers release a betting line on a game, the first thing they do is decide which team should be the favorite and which should be the underdog. The favorite is the team that is expected to win the game and will get a minus sign next to its odds, while the underdog is expected to lose and gets a plus sign. If the game is a toss-up, books will open it as a “pick” or “pick’em.” Click to return to table of contents . 2. Spreads. There are two main ways to bet on a favorite or an underdog. The first is the point spread, which is a bet on the margin of victory. A favorite “gives” points, while an underdog “gets” points. For example, say the Patriots are 7-point favorites (-7) against the Jets. If you bet on the Patriots, they need to win the game by 8 points or more for you to win your bet. If the Patriots win by 8 points or more, you “cover.” If the Patriots win by exactly 7 points, that is called a “push,” which means you get back the money you originally bet. If the Patriots win by 6 points or fewer (or lose the game straight-up), you lose your bet. Spreads are available for all sports, but they are predominantly used when betting on higher-scoring sports like football and basketball. 3. Moneylines. The second way to bet on a favorite or an underdog is on the moneyline. This is based solely on which team will win the game. Favorites are given a “minus” designation, such as -150, -200 or -500. If a favorite is -200, that means you have to risk $200 to win $100. If the favorite wins, you get $100, but if the favorite loses, you’re out $200. Because favorites are expected to win, you assume more risk when betting on them. Moneylines are available for all sports, but they are predominantly used when betting on lower-scoring sports like baseball, hockey and soccer. 4. Over/Unders (Totals) In addition to setting a line for the favorite and the underdog, oddsmakers will also set a total number of points scored in a game by both teams combined. This is called the total or over/under. Bettors can then wager on whether or not the game will go Over or Under the total. For example, an NBA game between the Celtics and Bulls might have a total of 215. You could either bet the Over 215 or the Under 215. If you bet the Over 215 and the total points scored end up being 216 or higher, you win your bet. If the total points scored are 214 or fewer, you lose. 5. What Is the -110 Number Listed Next to My Bet? The oddsmakers put a “tax” on every bet, which is typically called the “juice” or “vig” (short for “vigorish”). The juice is the commission you have to pay to the sportsbook for them to accept your wager. Say the Duke Blue Devils are -5 (-110) … that means if you want to bet on Duke as a 5-point favorite, you need to risk $110 to win $100. You always have to risk more on a favorite than you’d win on an underdog…otherwise, sportsbooks would be out of business. 6. How to Place a Bet. With legalized sports betting spreading across America, sports bettors have never had more options to take advantage of. To see if sports betting is legal where you live, check out our state-by-state tracker. Some of the biggest states that have legalized mobile wagering include Colorado, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Indiana and West Virginia. The sportsbooks highlighted below are all trustworthy legal shops that take bets online.
Michigan Online Sports Betting and Gaming Launch Date Expected Shortly. Scott W. Grau/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images. Pictured: Michigan Marching Band flag section. The wait for Michigan online sports betting, casino gaming and real-money poker is in its final days. The date and initial operator list for Michigan’s long-awaited online gaming launch will be announced by Jan. 18 at the latest, said Michigan Gaming Control Board Executive Director Richard Kalm at a meeting Tuesday. Assuming all approvals are met, Michigan residents and visitors will be able to deposit and wager with the first wave of online operators by the end of the month. “We’re very close. I wish I could give an exact day and time, but each day that changes,” Kalm said. “We’re gathering information daily. So we’re very close. That’s the best answer I can give right now.” After more than a year of waiting, Michigan’s online sports betting launch appears it will be ready to go before the Feb. 7 kickoff to this year’s Super Bowl, historically the single highest-grossing event for U.S. sportsbooks. Michigan Launch Comes into Focus. Though officials at Tuesday’s board meeting wouldn’t disclose publicly the go live date or initial approved operators, a timeline for online gaming in Michigan is coming into focus. After MGCB officials grant the go live date, which could come in the next few days, it will still be four or five additional days after that until the first operators can accept bets, Kalm said, during which time mobile operators must pass final testing and certification. Michigan’s 2019 sports betting law also requires at least one of the state’s commercial casinos and one of its Native American casinos earn their respective online wagering licenses before betting can begin. Kalm reaffirmed Tuesday the exact timeline remains in flux, but that should still allow the first bets to be placed before the end of January. In the meantime, Michigan bettors can begin downloading sportsbook and iGaming apps ahead of the launch. Michigan’s three commercial casinos along with a dozen tribal casinos have already formalized online sports betting and iGaming partnerships. Partner operators such as DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM, Barstool Sports, PointsBet and William Hill are among the dozen or so sportsbooks expected to go live on or near the official launch date. Retail sports betting began in March 2020, but multiple casino closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic have handicapped wagering options and fueled interest in the online launch, which is projected to make up as 90% or more of total betting handle. The 10th-largest state by population, Michigan is set to be one of the largest sports betting markets in the country. It will be the second most populated state with both online sports betting and iGaming, trailing only Pennsylvania. Long Rollout Nears Conclusion. Signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in December 2019, Michigan’s package of online sports betting, poker, iGaming and daily fantasy regulations underwent more than a year of review, rulemaking and certification. Michigan regulators were required by state law to craft rules, take public comment, submit a financial impact statement and receive final sign off from a state legislative body, a process that wasn’t completed until last month. Kalm said officials turned around the required gaming rules faster than any other set of regulations in his 13 years with the MGCB. Officials also expedited occupational, vendor and supplier licenses, a process Kalm said still took significant time as officials had to not only write and earn certification for their proposed rules, but then license three commercial and 12 tribal gaming operators as well as their affiliates and partners.

It’s fight day for UFC Vegas 18, which is happening tonight (February 6th) from the promotion’s APEX facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. Top-10 heavyweights will grace the night’s main event spot when the #5 ranked, Alistair Overeem, tangles with the #6 rated, Alexander Volkov. Bloody Elbow is here to provide you the the betting lines for this collision of big men, as well as for the rest of the scheduled tussles. LIVE! WATCH вЂUFC Vegas 18: вЂOVEREEM vs. VOLKOV ’ & Frankie Edgar vs Cory Sandhagen, & MORE! — February 6th., 2021! #SKIPtheSUPERBOWL. Stream all the fights broadcast LIVE RIGHT HERE — don’t miss a single second of face-punching action! Volkov’s straight up moneyline is currently holding a favored cost of -200, with a winning $100 bet paying out $150 altogether. Sure, Alexander Volkov has alternated wins and losses in his last-five appearances, which starts to raise consistency questions, but he has still won eight out of his last ten matches. He’s also tougher than a $2 steak. Vitaly Minakov caught him way back in 2013, and then Derrick Lewis scored that bonkers comeback knockout back in 2018. Other than that though, Volkov’s chin has held up. It makes sense for the oddsmakers to view him as the more trustworthy option to get the dub here. The truth is that yes, the longtime kickboxing/MMA veteran has been winning lately, but you never really know what you’re going to get with him. Overeem is MMA’s box of chocolates. With that being said, this fight would feel every bit of 50/50, except for the fact that Volkov holds the advantage in the durability department — and the chin is king at heavyweight. Also, why would anyone ever bet on this fight? For an in-depth breakdown of each UFC Vegas 18 bout, check out The MMA Vivisection with Bloody Elbow’s own Zane Simon and Connor Ruebusch. After a three-card stint on “Fight Island,” the Octagon returns to UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, this Saturday (Feb. 6, 2021) with a pivotal Heavyweight clash in tow. In UFC Vegas 18’s main event, the venerable Alistair Overeem puts his two-fight win streak on the line against perennial contender Alexander “Drago” Volkov. Down at 135 pounds, former Lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar, looks to make it two straight at Cory Sandhagen’s expense and The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) winner, Macy Chiasson, faces Marion Reneau. It’s a fine return to action after two weeks away, and one we can profit from. Here’s how: UFC continues its live events schedule from Las Vegas on Feb. 6 with its “Overeem vs. Volkov”-led fight card available to stream RIGHT HERE — don’t miss a single second of face-punching action! Up Next! вЂReem Team Heads Back To Vegas! What Went Wrong at UFC 257 ? Too many eggs in one painfully inconsistent basket. I really should have known better than to trust Khalil Rountree, even against the likes of Marcin Prachnio. In my defense, the article came out before his weight cut issues came to light. It’s a damn shame about Dan Hooker, though. It still shocks me that Michael Chandler was able to floor him with one punch when Dustin Poirier carpet-bombed “The Hangman” to no effect. I’m slapping an extra hypothetical $300 onto the hypothetical money pile. Let’s turn this around . UFC Vegas 18 Odds For The Undercard: Predictions! UFC Vegas 18 вЂPrelims’ Preview - Pt. 1. Predictions! UFC Vegas 18 вЂPrelims’ Preview - Pt. 2. Thoughts: As one-sided as it is, this undercard is full of bargains, namely Timur Valiev, Lara Procopio and Youssef Zalal. Valiev was almost even money against initial foe Julio Arce, and while -335 is a far cry from -125, he’s still worth an investment. The guy’s still an incredible fighter despite that debut loss, and Day has dropped three straight. Valiev has the kickboxing skill to keep up on the feet and is by far the better wrestler, making him a safe investment. Molly McCann’s defensive wrestling has failed her in both of her Octagon losses, and she’s largely had to rely on her offensive wrestling against low-level Flyweights in her wins. Not only is Procopio significantly superior on the mat, but she’s a skilled enough striker to hold her own a weight class up against Karol Rosa. She’s fefinitely a solid underdog investment. Seung Woo Choi has fought two quality UFC opponents (Movsar Evloev and Gavin Tucker) and one very, very bad one (Suman Mokhtarian), The quality duo combined to land 10 takedowns on him, and considering Zalal’s willingness and ability to drag opponents to the mat, that’s a death sentence. Choi doesn’t even figure to have much of an edge on the feet, as Zalal’s length, durability, and savvy make landing a knockout shot a borderline impossible task. “The Moroccan Devil” should be a much larger favorite, so make sure you’re in position to punish the bookies for their error. UFC Vegas 18 Odds For The Main Card: Edgar Believes Finish Over Sandhagen Earns Him UFC Title Shot. Reem Will вЂRetire Immediately’ After Winning Title. Thoughts: Alistair Overeem, Alexandre Pantoja and Cody Stamann are your investments of choice. I’m genuinely not clear on why Alexander Volkov is the favorite against Overeem. That’s because “Drago’s” best wins came over Fabricio Werdum and Walt Harris, both of whom Overeem also defeated, and looks to struggle against the Dutchman’s mobile striking offense. On top of that, Volkov has yet to fully address the grappling issues that have plagued him throughout his UFC career, presenting another tempting target for the well-rounded Overeem. In short, the veteran is a definitely worth your time. Manel Kape has looked like a monster in his last few Rizin bouts, but those came against opponents willing to oblige him in the stand up. The last time he faced a capable grappling specialist, “Ulka” Sasaki dominated him on the mat. Pantoja is tough as nails and a hugely dangerous submission artist, giving him the tools necessary to spoil Kape’s Octagon debut. Stamann, meanwhile, was -310 against Andre Ewell, which if anything undersold the stylistic nightmare he posed to “Mr. Highlight.” He’s still a bargain at -380 against Octagon newcomer Askar Askar, not to be confused with Flyweight contender Askar Askarov. Askar is an okay wrestler with painfully bad striking defense that Stamann should have little issue exploiting, making “The Spartan” a reliable anchor. UFC Vegas 18 Best Bets: Parlay — Youssef Zalal and Alistair Overeem: Bet $40 to make $107.20 Parlay — Timur Valiev and Lara Procopio: Bet $30 to make $61.50 Parlay — Cody Stamann and Alexandre Pantoja: Bet $40 to make $49.20. UFC Vegas 18 is a damn strong card and a perfect return to form after UFC’s January blitz. Don’t miss it. See you Saturday, Maniacs! UFC 103 Betting Odds Preview. UFC 103 takes place September 19th at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. It will be the MMA organizations’s first event to feature a total of 13 fights. The card is stacked with many potential Fight of the Night candidates. Here is a sneak preview of the betting odds for some of the most intriguing fights. The main event of UFC 103 is a match featuring MMA fighters with two very distinct styles. Rich Franklin and Vitor Belfort have both bounced back after enduring losing streaks and can strike with the best of them. This one is sure to be fast, furious and possibly over by the second round. With the odds being so close, you certainly want to be wise when placing your bets. Josh Koscheck heads into UFC 103 looking to regain his prominence as a top 170 lb. fighter with a victory over MMA vet Frank Trigg, who is making his return to the octagon. Although Koscheck has a great shot at winning the fight, the current odds have him slightly overvalued. After all, Trigg is simply migrating from another promotion, not awakening from retirement. Koscheck exposed a weak chin in his previous fight so a mistake or two could easily lead to his demise against the wily Trigg. In a potential number one contender’s bout, Junior dos Santos will take on former Pride Fighting star Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic. While Filipovic has certainly looked more impressive over his last few fights, he will have a difficult time keeping up with dos Santos who is nearly ten years younger and much faster. Don’t count out Cro Cop, but the Brazilian just might dominate and end this one in a flash. After suffering a concussion during an intense training, Mike Swick is out and Paul Daley is in against tough guy Martin Kampmann. At 170 lbs., Kampmann has shined in the welterweight division while Daley has won 9 of his last 11 fights, only losing to ex Bodog Fight champ Nick Thompson and world renowned welterweight fighter Jake Shields within that span. This is another potential number one contender bout that could just be our Fight out the Night. The odds for Griffin vs. Franca are pretty much dead on but that does not necessarily make this one an easy fight to bet on. Collectively, these two MMA fighters have been involved in 6 Fight of the Nights. Instead of placing a bet, you just might want to sit back and enjoy what should be a very entertaining fight. Escudero and Miller are two young fighters coming in to UFC 103 with a lot to prove. It is hard to how say how Escudero will fair. Even though he recently won The Ultimate Fighter, it seems as if TUF doesn’t make вЂem like they used to as winners of earlier seasons have been far more successful. With that said, Miller has looked impressive in his young UFC career and should give Esudero all he can handle.
