How College Football Lines Work. How College Football Odds Work: Lines, Point Spreads and Over/Unders. If you’re going to bet on college football odds, it’s essential to understand each aspect of odds listing, including the rotation number, point spread, moneyline and over/under. You’ll often find different terms used to describe these with the rotation number called the number, point spread shortened to spread, moneyline to line and over/under simply called the total. These are all lumped together under the term odds. Odds are basically a way of leveling the playing field and in college football due to the fact that there are hundreds of mismatches per year the field really does need to be leveled. By utilizing odds in various ways bookmakers are attempting to get an equal number of wagers on each team. In doing so, they are able to ensure that they make cash no matter who wins. When reading college football odds, the first thing you will see on the left is the time and date of the game. Next, you’ll see two numbers and the team names. Each team is assigned a rotation number. These numbers are standard on all sportsbooks and do a few things. First, it creates a certain order for the games as each matchup is listed in numerical order. The other thing the number does is it allows bettors to refer to the game and team without having to mention the team name or anything else. Let’s say on a matchup between Ohio State and Wisconsin. If Wisconsin is the home team, the Buckeyes are listed first and given the number 109, then the Badgers would be listed second and would be 110. When placing a bet over the phone or at a land-based sportsbook you simply need to mention the team’s number. After the teams, the various odds are listed. First will be the point spread. There may or may not be a moneyline, as sometimes a book will list these separately and finally the over/under is given. The point spread will list one team in the negative and the other in the positive. (Unless neither team is favored, then they will be listed as EVEN or PICK). The club posted in the negative with a minus sign is favored and so the bookies take points away from them, which means that team must win by at least a certain number of points to cover the spread. The underdog will have a plus sign and will cover if they win outright or lose by less than the posted number. Sometimes you’ll find a spread listed as a whole number. Decimals or fractions are often used and do prevent ties but if in our example the spread was set at 7 with the Buckeyes being the favorite and they win by 7, then the game is a tie. That’s called a push. The result of a push is all bets are off and all money wagered is returned. Although the odds on a spread bet are often listed as being even at 1:1, the fact is they are 0.90:1, which is a bit less than even. How does this work? Often in the point spread you’ll see next to each spread number -110. This tells you how much you have to wager to make $100. Thus, with the point spread -100 will always be listed, which means if someone wagers $110, they will make a $100 profit if they win. (If betting $11.00, the payout would be $10.00) The moneyline works differently. With this type of wager whichever team wins outright pays off. There is no spread. How does the line work? The favorite is listed with a minus sign and a number. That number is the amount of cash that must be bet in order to win $100. The underdog is posted with a plus sign in front of a number. The number is how much a sports bettor wins on a $100 wager. If Ohio State won and you bet to win $100 on the Buckeyes you would receive $100 plus your original stake of $360 returned back to you. Conversely if you laid $100 on Wisconsin and the Badgers pulled the upset you would receive $280 plus the $100 back that you used to place the bet. There is a correlation between the point spread and the moneyline. You’ll find that these vary a bit from book to book and will move depending on the amount of action a book receives on the spread or moneyline, but they basically work like this: The final type of bet you’ll find listed when looking at standard college football odds is the over/under. This is a projection of the total number of points that may be scored. It is usually listed as a fraction with the stake listed as it is in the spread (-110). With the over/under or total, bets are being made on what the total score may be. In our example which features two solid defenses and good offenses, the total might be around 41. If OSU scores 24 and Wisconsin 20, the total would be 44 or over the 41. If the Buckeyes scored 21 and the Badgers 14, then the total would be 35 so the under would win. Once again sometimes, if the total is a whole number, the result may be a push. That results in all bets simply being returned. If your sports betting experience consists mostly of office pools during March Madness or a casual wager between you and a friend while you watch the Super Bowl, the transition to serious sports betting means learning how to read betting lines. The biggest difference between making the kind of casual bets mentioned above and placing wagers with online sportsbooks or at brick-and-mortar bookshops is the use of sports betting lines. Casual wagers usually involve each person in the bet picking one team to win, then wagering an equal amount, say $20 or $30. Professional bookmakers, online sports betting exchanges, and sports betting facilities in casinos have a more complex system for offering wagers on sporting events, in part to ensure profit on the part of the book, and in part to present a standardized representation of odds. Let’s start with the basics: what do sports bettors mean when they talk about a ‘line?’ The word line, in the language of a sportsbook, can refer to either the odds and/or a point spread in any sports contest. Let’s take a look at an imaginary line the way you’d read it off the board sitting in a Vegas sports betting lounge or on the screen at your online book. Let’s imagine a game between the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys. The Point Spread. Obviously, the first three letters on the top two lines of the three-line package of symbols represents a team in the game you’re wagering on; NYG stands for the New York Giants, while DAL stands for the Dallas Cowboys. The number next to each team’s name is known as the spread or the point spread. Wagers on the point spread are among the most popular sports wagers in the world. The reason this wager is popular is that it doesn’t matter which team wins or loses; what matters is the amount of points the teams score, and whether or not the team you place your money on beats the difference in points (the ‘spread’) or not. Placing a point spread bet means gambling on how much a team will win or lose by. In our above example, the Cowboys are the favorite. How do we know that? The minus symbol in front of the point spread indicates that the bookmaker thinks the final score will have Dallas winning by 7.5 points or more. The underdog, in our example that’s the New York Giants, will always be indicated with a plus sign. If you wager on the Cowboys on the point spread, America’s Team will have to win by at least 8 points for your wager to pay off. Should the Cowboys win by less than 8 points, your bet is lost. A wager on the Giants on the spread does not mean that New York has to win the game in order for you to win cash. All the G-Men have to do is come within 8 points of the ‘boys, and you’re a winner. You determine a winning or losing point spread by adding or subtracting 7.5 from the final score, depending on which side you laid your bet. If you’re confident that New York will at least come within a touchdown of beating the Cowboys, or beating them outright, then you’d wager on the spread in favor of New York. A quick word on that annoying half point in the point spread – most lines you’ll come across will use half points, but it’s not standard practice across the board. When you see a line with a full number instead of a number with a half point, your wager could end up as a push. In our example, if the line were 7 instead of 7.5 and the final difference in points was exactly 7, your wager is returned to you, and neither you nor the book makes money. What’s the function of the second number in the line? The second number in our example (-110 for both teams) tells you how much you have to wager in order to win $100. It’s an easy way to calculate how much you’ll win if your bet pays off, presented in units of $100 at a time for simplicity’s sake. Most of the time, these two numbers will be the same, because oddsmakers want to set lines so that they get as much action on the underdog as on the favorite, guaranteeing them a profit. If a book gets a single bet of $110 (by a customer hoping to win $100) on the Cowboys and a single bet of $110 on the Giants, it will have taken in $220, but will only have to pay back $210 to whichever customer wins the bet. That’s a guaranteed profit of $10, and since sportsbooks take far more than a single bet in either direction, they stand to earn that seemingly small amount of profit many times over. The $10 difference between what you wager and what you win is known as juice or vig in the sports betting industry, and it’s the way books earn their bread and butter. What does the last number in the line mean? The last number in the top two rows of our sports line example is known as the money line. If you’re not interested in betting on the point spread, you can wager on a team to win outright. The plus sign next to the underdog (in our case, the Giants) indicates how much money you’ll earn for every $100 you bet on the money line. Conversely, the minus sign next to the favorite’s line tells you how much you have to wager in order to win $100. In our example, a $100 wager on the Giants earns you $300 should they pull off the upset, while a bet of $405 on the Cowboys will net you an extra $100. Representing odds in units of $100 makes placing different size bets easy; if you want to bet $10 on the Giants, you stand to earn $30 if they win, while a $40.50 bet on the Cowboys will net you an additional $10. What does the bottom row of numbers and letters mean? The final line of information in our example line is the over-under. Wagers placed on the over-under have nothing to do with which team wins or the difference between the points they score, but rather the combined number of points both teams will score in the game. The first number (56.5 in our sample line) is the book’s predicted total score, while the second number (110 in our Giants/Cowboys rivalry game) is how much a punter has to bet in order to win $100. If you were to bet the over-under on this game, you’ll have to decide whether you think the combined score of both teams will be higher or lower than the number put up by the book. Let’s say you bet the over, assuming the game will be a shootout between two talented offenses, you’re hoping that the final score will be anything that totals 57 or more. It could be Dallas 54, New York 3, or any other point combination that adds up to 57 or more and your bet will win. Betting the under means that the two teams cannot score more than 56 points combined, or else you lose your bet. Reading sports betting lines becomes easier with practice and experience with different sporting events. What looks like a jumble of letters and numbers actually gives a lot of information in a tiny amount of space. Different sports have different types of wagers available, such as the run line in baseball or the puck line in hockey, both of which replace the money line found in our football example. If he or she bet $100, he or she would, of course, get the original $100 stake back, plus another $100 ($100 x 2.00 = $200 total return, original stake included). Decimal odds must be larger than 1.00, which would imply no winnings. The occasional confusion with decimal format is that it calculates the total ticket, including the original stake, while the other two formats are based on winnings. To some, this is more intuitive. A winning stake priced at 3.00 means tripling one’s money. Of course, decimals aren’t often whole numbers. A winning stake priced at 1.65 means the bettor gets his or her money back and wins another 65 percent of that original stake ($100×1.65=$165 ticket — $65 in winnings, plus the original stake). How to Read Gambling Odds: American. American format is based on $100. The odds will either begin with a plus or a minus. A plus represents an underdog, or “plus money” return, while a minus represents a favorite that offers a potential profit smaller than the stake itself. The number after a minus represents how much much be staked in order to win $100. The larger the number, the heavier the favorite. A -600 favorite requires the bettor to risk $600 to win $100 for a ticket worth $700. If it’s a minus payout, divide 100 by the number. So that -600 payout would be 1.167 in decimal form (100/600=1.67) How to Read Gambling Odds: Fractions. Fractional odds are more traditional but gradually disappearing in favor of decimal format. Perhaps the math is just too tough for the everyday bettor to figure nowadays. The denominator (that’s the one on bottom) in the fraction represents the stake; the numerator (on top) represents the winnings , not the total ticket amount. Example: 3/1 odds (perhaps shown as 3:1) means a bettor wins three times as much as he or she stakes. A $50 bet would win $150 for a total ticket worth $200. The denominator can be another number, though. A 5/2 payout means for every $2 wagered, a bettor would win $5, on top of the $2 return for the original stake. Our findings were derived from analysis of the 2015 Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey. 1 The HILDA Survey is designed so that findings can be generalised to the Australian adult population. Survey-based estimates show that in 2015, well over half a million Australian adults regularly placed bets on sports. Most sports bettors were men, and aged between 18 and 49. Their typical monthly expenditure on sports betting amounted to around $1,000 each over the year. Forty-one per cent of regular sports bettors experienced one or more gambling-related problems. Key messages. In 2015, well over half a million Australian adults (574,000) were estimated to have regularly wagered on sports. Sports bettors were overwhelmingly male (88%), aged between 18 and 49 (75%), and working full-time (70%). On average, sports bettors spent close to half their typical gambling outlay on sports betting (45%), and just over half on other activities. Forty-one per cent of all regular sports bettors—234,000 adults—experienced one or more gambling problems in 2015. In a typical month, 46 cents in every dollar spent on sports betting by regular sports bettors came from a person with moderate to severe gambling problems. Sports betting participation. Sports bettors also spent money on other gambling activities, with sports betting making up 45% of their total gambling spending. Their remaining gambling outlay was mostly spent on race betting and lotteries (Figure 1). In total, the average sports bettor spent $192 across all gambling activities in a typical month of 2015, amounting to $2,305 over the year. 5. Regular sports bettors were overwhelmingly male (88%), aged between 18 and 49 (75%), and worked full-time (70%). They were much more likely to have a higher-than-average income (55%) than lower-than-average income (28%). Furthermore, compared to the Australian adult population, a substantially higher proportion of regular sports bettors were single (56% of sports bettors vs 45% of Australian adults), born in Australia (82% vs 70%) and identified as Indigenous (4.6% vs 2.3%). Gambling problems. In 2015, 41% of all regular sports bettors - 234,000 adults - experienced one or more gambling-related problems (Table 1). That is, their gambling behaviour caused or put them at risk of harm. 6 This was more than double the rate among regular gamblers nationally. This further means that one fifth of all regular gamblers who experienced problems in Australia regularly participated in sports betting. Around 23% of regular sports bettors - 134,000 adults - had moderate to severe gambling problems. In a typical month, well over half of all sports betting expenditure by regular gamblers - 61 cents in every dollar - was accounted for by those who experienced any sort of gambling problem (Figure 3). Close to half - 46 cents in every dollar - was accounted for by those who experienced moderate to severe problems. Regular sports bettors who reported problems had four characteristics that distinguished them from those who did not experience problems. They were more likely to be: 7. Types of problems. The types of gambling-related problems experienced by regular sports bettors were also explored. In 2015, almost one in five sports bettors (18%; 103,000) felt they might have a gambling problem. Close to a quarter bet more than they could afford to lose (22%; 126,000); 27% (16,000) tried to win back money they lost on another day. For 12% (70,000), gambling had caused them physical or mental health problems. These problems stemmed from bettors' overall gambling activity, which included sports betting. Sports bettors who experienced gambling-related problems were also much more likely than those who did not, to live in households that experienced financial problems. The likelihood of financial problems escalated with the severity of sports bettors' gambling problems. Half of all households containing a sports bettor with severe gambling problems had members who reported asking family or friends for financial help during the year. A third (34%) had household members who reported they could not pay bills on time due to a shortage of money, and a quarter (28%) could not pay the rent or mortgage on time. You’ll learn the nuances of the game as you gain more experience. For intermediate or advanced players, this is all common knowledge, but for beginners just learning the game, patience is a virtue. While various tables can have players of very different skill levels, and you do not want to play ‘tight’, or too close to the vest, using less risky play initially will mitigate big losses early on and keep your interest as you continue to learn. Eventually, you’ll also learn how to bluff, which by a series of strong wagers, can trick other players into believing your hand is stronger than it might really be. On Tuesday, the Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) authorized nine operators to go live on Jan. 22 at noon. “The Michigan Gaming Control Board and the state’s commercial and tribal casinos will begin a new era Jan. 22 with the launch of regulated online gaming and sports betting,” MGCB executive director Richard S. Kalm said in a news release. “Michigan residents love sports and, judging by inquiries we’ve received, eagerly anticipate using mobile devices to place bets through the commercial and tribal casinos. Online gaming and sports betting will provide the casinos with new ways to engage with customers while the state and local communities will benefit from taxes and payments on wagering revenue.” No poker yet, but online gaming may pave the way. Michigan officially legalized online poker, online casinos and sports betting in 2019. So far, PokerStars and Roar Digital/MGM (which runs partypoker US Network ) have been approved in the state. Kelly Pavlik, the former WBC and WBO middleweight champion, will be stepping into the ring again for the second time in just over a month when he takes on Will Rosinsky in a 10-round super middleweight tilt at Carson, California’s Home Depot Center. This will be Pavlik’s fourth bout in the super middleweight division. Pavlik upped his record to 39-2, with 34 KOs on June 8 when he beat Scott Sigmon by a seventh-round TKO and the 30-year old is hoping to earn a title shot or big-money fight before the year’s out. The 27-year-old Rosinsky of New York, who has a 16-1, record with 9 KOs, pounded out an eight-round unanimous decision over Aaron Pryor on June 14, meaning he’s actually had less time than Pavlik to prepare for this bout. Rosinsky’s a good boxer and in his prime, and shouldn’t be a pushover for Pavlik. His lone loss came to Edwin Rodriguez by a 10-round unanimous decision last October. He’s 5-foot-10 with a 70-inch reach while Pavlik of Youngstown, Ohio stands. Just over 6-foot-2 and has a 75 inch wingspan. Pavlik has had trouble with alcohol addiction over the past couple of years and moved to California to get away from his bad hometown influences. He’s been working with new trainer Robert Garcia for the past couple of fights and is determined to put his name back on the top of the boxing map. Rosinsky said it’s going to be the toughest fight of his career, but he’s definitely ready for it. He said he wasn’t really impressed with Pavlik’s performance last month in the win over Sigmon and thought Pavlik looked slower at the heavier weight and had lost some of his power. He added that he’s got nothing to lose since he’s the underdog and believes Pavlik can be beaten. He also feels Pavlik is a little burnt out since he’s been a pro for a dozen years now, but still regards him as a great fighter. Pavlik will be motivated for this bout and he knows he needs to win it in impressive styles if he’s going to get a big fight in the near future. He won’t take it easy on Rosinsky, but he won’t find it easy either. Pavlik’s used to the big name bouts and needs to realize this is a 10 rounder, not 12. Buccaneers signal-caller Tom Brady will be playing in his 10th Super Bowl and looking for his seventh Lombardi Trophy—at 43 years old. Kansas City's young gunslinger—the 25-year-old Patrick Mahomes—will be playing in his second-consecutive Super Bowl. In only three years as a full-time starter, Mahomes has already won one Lombardi, one Super Bowl MVP and one regular-season MVP. In many ways, this quarterback matchup is representative of the NFL's past and its future. There's a lot more history involved in this game than at the quarterback position, though. Kansas City, which has been in the AFC title game three straight years, may be in the beginning stages of the league's next great dynasty. The Buccaneers are back in the big game for the first time since the 2002 season. Tampa won Super Bowl XXXVII to claim the only Lombardi Trophy in franchise history. Of course, the pass rush is a two-way street, and Brady will have to deal with the likes of Chris Jones when he's on the field. When the Chiefs and Bucs faced off in the regular season, Brady was only sacked once, but he was also forced into two interceptions. Kansas City won that game 27-24. It's worth noting, though, that the Chiefs got off to a hot start in that game before surviving with a three-point win. The Buccaneers may get off to a slow start here, as is typical for Brady. In nine previous Super Bowl appearances, Brady's teams have scored a total of three points in the first quarter. "Hard to explain why or why not that hasn't happened," Brady said, per Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk. "I'm sure they're all a lot of individual things, why that's happened or not." Expect Brady to put a few more points on the board in this one, though, and to help the score creep past the over.
