п»їThese Were the 3 Best Sports Betting Stocks of 2020. Betting online may be the future of sports gambling. Sports betting is big business around the world, and it's been dominated for decades by traditional land-based casinos. That's changing as betting moves online, and the mobile gambling market took a major step forward in 2020 as more states legalized online gambling, and thousands of people began betting legally at home during the pandemic. A few companies hit public markets as well, bringing even more attention and funding to the industry. As we look back on the year and forward to 2021, the sports betting market has three clear winners in my eyes: DraftKings (NASDAQ:DKNG) , MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM) , and the little known GAN Limited (NASDAQ:GAN) . Image source: Getty Images. DraftKings. The hottest sports betting stock of 2020 was DraftKings, hands down. The company hit the market through a special purpose acquisition company and hasn't looked back. Shares shot higher as the pandemic wore on and sports came back, helped by investors hoping that online betting would begin to replace in-person betting. For the year, shares are up 406%. In some ways, the boom in online betting is happening faster than expected, and that's helped early movers like DraftKings. In New Jersey, which is the bellwether for online gambling because it was the biggest early state to allow betting, there were $91.8 million in bets in November 2020 alone, up 86.9% from a year ago. If that growth and level of revenue are any indication of the potential for the rest of the country, DraftKings has a long runway ahead. The third-quarter 2020 results were a small indication of how well things are going for DraftKings. Revenue was up 42% on a pro forma basis to $133 million, and monthly unique users grew 64% to 1 million. Revenue is also expected to be $750 million to $850 million in 2021, up 45% at its midpoint from 2020 guidance. This is a sports betting stock with a lot going for it and maybe just at the beginning of its growth story. MGM Resorts. As gambling moves online, companies with a physical presence can sometimes have an advantage over digital-only companies. They have known brands, regulators sometimes require a physical presence to operate in a state, and there can be synergies between real-world and online casinos. That's the space that MGM Resorts is trying to fill, and it's done so relatively well in 2020. The joint venture MGM Resorts built to enter the space is BetMGM, which is now offered in eight states and is growing as quickly as states will allow. Like DraftKings, the company is limited by what's legal in the U.S., but betting should be opening up in more states long term. What I like about MGM as a sports betting play is that it has a foundation as a physical casino company. MGM can use the cash flow from its casinos to fund online gambling development, and if it does that successfully it should add a lucrative business to the portfolio. GAN Limited. DraftKings and MGM are the companies that are taking bets and building the apps that consumers are using, but GAN is building the background infrastructure that online gambling is built on. Its software services include player identity validation, payment services, regulatory reporting, and even some game content. And with the recently announced acquisition of Coolbet, it'll enter the sports betting market worldwide. If sports betting continues to grow, GAN will be one of the beneficiaries because it's providing services to multiple players. And I would expect some casinos and game companies that don't have the capital to build their own infrastructure to lean on a company like GAN. What's exciting about GAN is that it has the opportunity to grow with the online gambling and sports betting industries as well as grow the services it offers to clients. It already has a turnkey solution for infrastructure, but don't be surprised to see more games added to the portfolio so GAN can white-label the entire casino experience. That's where the real money will be made for this gambling stock.
3 Stocks to Buy in Sports Betting. The business is growing nationwide, and these are the companies built to dominate the market. Since the Supreme Court opened the door for states to legalizing sports betting in mid-2018, the casino industry's biggest players have been elbowing for the best strategic positions. Some companies are acquiring others, some are building high-profile partnerships, and others are trying to go it almost alone. Here's a look at how the industry is shaping up and where investors should look for the best bets in sports-wagering stocks. Image source: Getty Images. How sports betting will work. The sports betting industry will work a lot like casinos today. There are the companies that take the bets (casinos) and are the front-facing view consumers get. And then there are the infrastructure companies behind the scenes, such as slot-machine and table-game makers. Both groups are regulated in each state, and they can leverage their position to serve as wide an audience as possible. While regulations vary by state, this is a good start for understanding the industry. As we look at partnerships in sport betting, this backdrop will be important. Infrastructure companies are trying to offer as many services as possible to those with sports betting licenses, which has led to a lot of consolidation, and the bet takers are trying to raise their profile with partnerships. The infrastructure layer. There are three major companies that provide the infrastructure for sports betting. International Game Technology (NYSE:IGT) , Scientific Games (NASDAQ:SGMS) , and The Stars Group (NASDAQ:TSG) -- which recently agreed to merge with Flutter Entertainment -- are the three to watch. They are extending into sports betting after dominating slot machines, table games, and online poker, respectively. I mentioned above that these companies are trying to spread their services to as many operators as possible, and they've all announced major partnerships in sports betting. Scientific Games has deals with Wynn Resorts (NASDAQ:WYNN) and Caesars Entertainment (NASDAQ:CZR) in the U.S. and recently won a joint-venture bid in Turkey. IGT has deals with FanDuel and DraftKings along with smaller agreements with Boyd Gaming (NYSE:BYD) and some tribal casinos across the country. But its biggest deal is an agreement to provide a sports betting platform for MGM Resorts in Las Vegas and New Jersey. The Stars Group has partnered with Penn National (NASDAQ:PENN) , tribal casinos, and even Fox Sports through both free and real-money wagering. These are the companies that make the betting happen. But for investors, they may not be where the most money is in sports gambling. Casinos' role in sports gambling. In many states, the casino itself needs to take wagers and will ultimately be the interface with customers. That means that a physical presence is required in many markets, which favors large, regional operators. Caesars Entertaintment and MGM Resorts (NYSE:MGM) are the two biggest based on revenue in the U.S. Caesars is already operating sportsbooks in seven states at 30 venues and has partnered with Disney 's ESPN and AT&T 's Turner Sports to provide TV programming for sports betting. Its proposed combination with Eldorado Resorts (NASDAQ:ERI) will increase that reach regionally, and that's what Caesars is hoping will be its differentiator. MGM Resorts is betting that being involved with sports leagues themselves will be the best way to market. It has deals with the major basketball, hockey, and baseball leagues to be their official partner and even get proprietary data from leagues to offer more betting options. The company also signed a deal to be the sports betting partner of Buffalo Wild Wings, which will expand its presence to markets where it doesn't have casinos. Smaller casino companies like Penn National and Boyd Gaming are building whatever partnerships they can, leveraging some of the suppliers I mentioned like The Stars Group and DraftKings, but they'll have a much smaller business in sports betting. They just don't have the scale or media reach of Caesars and MGM, which I think are the best bets on the casino side of the business. Where to wager on sports betting. I think the biggest winner in sports betting as it expands will be MGM Resorts. The company has the partnerships necessary to build a big audience; that will improve the betting data it gets, which could be a feedback loop for the gambling market. On the supplier side, Scientific Games has built partnerships that could leverage scale with betting outlets outside of MGM. The company is also going international, which could open up many new markets. If you're looking to wager on the sports betting business, MGM and Scientific Games have great odds, and that's why they're my top picks today.

3 Best Sports Gambling Stocks to Buy Now. By Garrett Baldwin , Behavioral Trading Specialist , Money Morning • November 9, 2020. Start the conversation. Or to contact Money Morning Customer Service, click here. There was one clear winner in Tuesday's election, and I'm not talking about the presidency. Legal sports gambling swept victories everywhere it was on the ballot. And with the market rallying again, the best sports gambling stocks are due to surge even higher. Voters approved sports gambling by a wide margin in Louisiana, Maryland, and South Dakota by comfortable margins. It seems people love to bet on sports, and states love the tax revenue sports betting can generate. Since the Supreme Court's 2018 decision allowing states to set their own rules on sports gaming, 25 states have legalized it in some form. Three more states have pending legislation that could open up gambling in those states too. For an industry that was all but outlawed just a few years ago, this is one of the most exciting growth sectors now as the people have spoken, and companies are racing to meet the demand. This is a fantastic development for casino stocks, but plenty of other companies are getting into the ring, including sports betting apps and e-sports companies. The future of sports gambling will mean incredible growth rates for sports betting companies and huge potential profits for investors in these companies. Here are my best three gambling stocks to ride this hot new trend… A High-Flying Sports Gambling Stock with a Fantastic Future. The obvious first stock is DraftKings Inc. (NASDAQ: DKNG). DraftKings is known for its daily fantasy sports games, where players compete against each other by choosing players they think will have the best performance each game. But DraftKings is expanding into betting too. It's currently offering sports betting services in seven states, including the massive New York and New Jersey markets. Its daily fantasy sports products are available in eight countries internationally with 15 sports categories. Daily fantasy sports games are available pretty much everywhere in the United States. This gives DraftKings something of a captive audience to market to when states begin to allow online betting within their borders. The fantasy sports game is risk-free for DraftKings as prize pools are a function of how much players have bet. Draft Kings is merely taking an administrative fee off the top. That's in contrast to traditional sports books, where a major upset could lead to major losses for the casino. In addition to sportsbooks and daily fantasy, DraftKings also has online casino games. As more states allow sports betting and other forms of gambling, DraftKings will be well-positioned to move fantasy players over to the platform's gambling apps. DraftKings stock has had a huge run since its SPAC took it public. The stock is up over 200% in the past year, but many observers think DraftKings is still a buy. The shares have pulled back about 30% in the past month as the NBA and MLB season have ended and fears rose that COVID-19 could end the college and professional football seasons. A follow-up share offering that received a tepid reception didn't help the stock much either. The long-term outlook is much brighter than the short-term sell-off is accounting for right now. Sports betting and online casinos will continue to spread across the United States. Earnings will grow at 40% or more a year, and the stock will continue to power the shares to much higher prices. One of the Best Casino Stocks to Own. Penn National Gaming Inc. (NASDAQ: PENN) is primarily known as the owner of casinos and racetracks around the United States. It is a big player in sports betting as it currently operates live sports betting at its properties in Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. That makes it one of the key players in the industry, but the reason this is one of the best stocks to own in this space is because of Barstool Sports. Barstool started as a sports gambling newsletter and has grown into a massive sports entertainment operation. Penn National bought 36% of the company last year for $163 million in cash and stock. In three years, it will increase its ownership to 50% for another $62 million. Barstool Sports caters to young sports fans and gamblers with a legion of podcasts, social media feeds, and even a radio show on SiriusXM. The upstart company's success has knocked industry stalwart ESPN off balance. Joining Barstool's image and audience with a sports gambling app could do wonders for Penn National. Penn National has a sports betting app that's approved in Pennsylvania and will spread across the country over the next few years. It may end up owning the 20-40 years old online sports betting market in the United States. Earnings for Penn National should also grow at better than 40% a year for the next five years, at least. That should continue to drive the stock price higher. But our best sportsbook stock to buy is one you might not think of right away. And that's why its growth potential is so huge…

If you are fascinated with the world of gambling and all it brings with it, here are a few movies you may want to watch as one of the pastimes during the coronavirus pandemic . The Color of Money. There are quite a few cautionary tales out there warning the viewers against gambling of any type but The Color of Money is not such a movie. Instead, this 1986 movie is a psychological drama that delves deep into the identity and emotions of professional gamblers of the 80s, who were quite unlike pros we see today who often only bet online as seen at BettingBilly . Starring Tom Cruise and Paul Newman, The Color of Money is absolutely star studded and a masterpiece in its own right. The movie follows the couple who play a master bettor and his apprentice as they journey through the gambling underworld of the time and face both gambling and life dramas along the way. Casino. The title of this 1995 Martin Scorsese masterpiece may make you think that the movie is not about sports betting at all, but this is quite the opposite of the truth. The film looks at young Frank “Ace” Rothstein, one of the best odds makers who ever lived. This real world figure was recognized for his skill and allowed to basically run Las Vegas during the 1970s, when gangsters owned this gambling paradise from the ground up. Casino portrays a realistic and dark image of the early Las Vegas that was organized and run by some of the most dangerous people in USA at the time. Like most Scorsese’s films, Casino looks deep into the characters involved and portrays each of them as a real human being with passions, fears and desires. If you want to see a true masterpiece and love sports betting, casino and gangster related movies, Casino is one you don’t want to miss out on. Two for the Money. The story is based loosely on the character of Brandon Lang, a college athlete who turns into a sports handicapper. Lang starts off doing a boring telemarketing job that seems to be getting him nowhere, but his talents at picking winners in football matches get the attention of Walter Abrams, who helps him make it big as a handicapper. The movie starts two of the all-time greats, Al Pacino and Matthew McConaughey, making it one destined for greatness. Two for the Money looks into the emotions and the ups and downs of sports bettors and does not deal with the mechanics of betting as some of the other movies that touch on the subject do. Two for the Money may just be one of the most insightful films looking into the highs and the lows of the professional sports betting lifestyle. If you are thinking of trying to bet on sports more seriously, this film may just be the motivation one way or the other. Eight Men Out. Sports betting is often associated with game fixing and throwing and Eight Men Out is a film about one of the greatest such scandals in history, the 1919 World Series. This real world MLB scandal saw eight members of the Chicago White Sox banned from MLB for life due to throwing the Series Finals. The movie’s association with sports betting is the fact the Series was thrown for sports betting interests. The White Sox were greatly favored by the bookies and their elimination over the eight game series made the group that paid them off a substantial profit. Charlie Sheen and John Cusack star in the movie as two of the young players who decided it was worth throwing the Series due to disputes with the club owner. The movie looks at both sides of the medal without any assumptions and portrays a realistic image of the event as well as an unbiased look at all the involved parties. Smart Money. The worlds of sports betting and stock market are often paralleled by many and the main protagonist of Smart Money, Jimmy wants to become a stock broker himself. In order to do so, he decides he will acquire the starting capital and money he needs to get his license by joining an illegal sports betting syndicate. While this sounds like a good idea to Jimmy early on, things start to take a turn for the worst really fast and he is faced with make it or break it decisions he wasn’t hoping for. The thrilling drama takes the viewers to the edge and is certainly worth a watch. The Gambler. Loosely based on the 1867 novel by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, The Gambler is a tale of Alex Freed, an English professor who enjoys basketball and gambling just a little bit too much. Despite having a great life and family, Alex ends up in massive gambling debts over betting on basketball games and extends the problems by borrowing money from his own mother. The drama only gets more complex when the main protagonist talks a young basketball player to cheat for him, which instead of resolving his problems only makes matters worse. Can Alex turn his life around or does it all end badly, you can find out by having a look at the actual picture. Let It Ride. Anyone familiar with sports betting and gambling also knows about hot and cold streaks and how people may believe in them just a bit too much. Let it Ride is an amazing movie about a cab driver who accidentally gets his hands on a great horse racing tip which he uses and makes a fortune at the track. However, the drama does not end here, as the cabby played by Richard Dreyfuss keeps on gambling and starts to win even more. Will he end up broke and without any of his winnings or is he going to break the bank? Watch Let it Ride to find out!

Entertainment Betting. Online entertainment betting is wagering on anything you can find in the entertainment industry, from award shows like the Grammys and Oscars to television shows like Game of Thrones. Similar to sports betting, odds show which event is likely to happen, or who is favored to win the bet. HOW TO BET ON ENTERTAINMENT. Betting on entertainment events, like the next winner of a reality show, is similar to wagering on sporting events like the Superbowl. First off, there are no gambling sites that are solely entertainment betting sites. Sportsbooks usually offer the best entertainment odds for bettors in the same fashion as sports betting. Bookmakers in the United States always present entertainment odds in the American odds format. American Odds. Sports betting sites calculate a bet’s odds based on factors that can affect its likelihood of happening. For example, for the Oscars, you bet that the movie that wins Best Picture will also win Best Cinematography. The probability of that happening will be calculated by oddsmakers, and presented in the American odds format: Same Film to Win Both Best Picture and Best Cinematography. A negative figure shows how much you have to bet to win $100 . It also shows you the favored outcome. The positive figure , on the other hand, shows how much you can win if you bet $100. Conversely, it shows the underdog or the outcome that’s least likely to happen. In the example above, if you wagered “yes” and that bet wins, you can get a total payout of $240 ($100 bet plus $140 profit). Meanwhile, betting on “no” gets you a total payout of $280 ($180 bet plus $100 profit). Note that it’s safer to bet on “yes” rather than “no” because it involves you wagering a lower amount ($100 vs. $180). Remember that American odds use a standard base of $100 to make gambling a lot easier. However, bettors can still wager any amount of money they want! As for banking options, the most common payment methods are e-wallets and credit cards, and, more recently, cryptocurrency like Bitcoin. TYPES OF ENTERTAINMENT BETS. Television Shows. There are many entertainment betting options available on online sportsbooks. One of the most common is betting on television shows, which there are several ways to do. For example, the hit HBO series Game of Thrones was popular among bettors before it concluded its run. Many gamblers speculated on who would end up sitting on the Iron Throne: Who will win the Game of Thrones? This is an example of a futures bet, which is also a type of wager done in sports betting. Basically, a futures bet involves gambling on events that are yet to happen. In the example above, it’s clear that Jon Snow has the highest chance of winning the bet because he has the shortest odds. In futures betting, the higher the odds, the lower the chances of winning are. If you were to bet on Jon Snow and he ended up sitting on the Iron Throne, you would get a total payout of $400 ($100 bet plus $300 profit). However, if you were to bet on Sansa, you would end up with a total payout of $700 ($700 bet plus $100 profit). If you bet on Dany and lost the bet, you’d get $0, losing your $100 wager. However, if the Mother of Dragons wins the Iron Throne, you’d get a whopping $1000 payout ($100 bet plus $900 in profit). You could also make prop bets or propositional bets, not just for TV Shows but for all types of entertainment bets. Prop bets, like Futures bets, are also offered in sports betting. These bets are more unconventional than the usual wagers and involve betting on specific individuals or events. For example, in the professional wrestling show WWE Raw, you can bet on whether a match between John Cena vs. Randy Orton will have the longest ring time or not. This is likely to happen since both are veteran wrestlers who can hold their own in a fight. Reality Shows. Wagering on reality shows is also extremely popular in the world of entertainment betting. Reality TV, which includes competition shows, talent shows, and other contest shows, is a major source of entertainment for many Americans. Thanks to its nature of weekly and even daily airing, as well as it being (supposedly) unscripted, bettors can make all kinds of wagers. Who gets eliminated, at what round will the contestant be eliminated, and who wins the season are some of the examples of entertainment betting on reality TV. Like betting on TV series, you can also make futures and prop bets on reality shows. Futures betting lines, like show winners, are placed early during the show’s start and are adjusted weekly for accuracy. Who is the Next American Idol? Some eccentric prop bets can also be placed during the start of the show, for example: Which Judge will Leave first? There are even prop bets on what the gender of the next winner will be, or what song will be performed for the season finale. Reality Shows Popular in Entertainment Betting: America’s Got Talent The Voice American Idol The Bachelor Big Brother Dancing with the Stars Survivor X-Factor Masterchef Let’s Dance. Movies. Usually, entertainment betting on movies gets mixed up with Awards betting (Academy Awards, Golden Globes, and more). However, there are other ways of betting on movies that don’t include wagering on whether they win an award or not. Some examples of entertainment bets on movies: Which actor will next take up the mantle of 007 and become the next James Bond? Betting over/under on the movie’s box office (whether it will go over or under a certain amount as set by the bookmakers) Betting over/under on a movie’s ratings on Rotten Tomatoes (ex: over 90% or under 90% in the Tomatometer) The first is an example of a fun prop bet, while the rest are Over/Under or Totals bets, which are also offered in sports betting. Awards. Betting on Award shows is probably the most popular type of entertainment betting. An example of this is betting on who wins Best Actor or Best Director, or which movie wins the Best Picture. Still, awards betting isn’t limited to just motion pictures, television, or even music awards. There’s also betting on sports awards and even humanity awards. Listed below are the most common awards shows that sports betting sites offer entertainment betting odds for: Awards Shows for Movies and Television. The Academy Awards or Oscars Primetime Emmy Awards Golden Globes MTV Movie Awards BAFTAs Razzies. Music Awards. MTV VMAs Grammy Awards Brit Awards Tony Awards Mercury Prize. Other Awards. Time’s Person of the Year Nobel Prize. Betting on the Oscars is the most popular form of entertainment betting. It involves wagering on the possible nominations, winners, and even who the host will be. Whether a specific movie will be nominated for best picture Whether a foreign director will be nominated for best director Whether a foreign film will win the best picture. Betting odds for the winners of an award will have futures odds. There are also quirky prop bets. You can wager that a certain actress will wear a black dress, or whether the winner for Best Supporting Actor will give a lengthy acceptance speech. Contest. Contests are also popular among entertainment bettors, especially for annual competitions such as: Miss Universe Miss America Eurovision. People even bet on Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, as well as the National Spelling Bee. For contest betting, you can make futures bets and wager on who you think will be the contest’s winner. However, you can also make prop bets on whether a specific contestant will be wearing braces or glasses. For Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest, there are even Over/Under or Totals bets on the number of total hot dogs consumed by contestants! Bookmakers get creative when it comes to entertainment betting, which shows why many bettors are trying their luck on these types of wagers.
23 Are Charged With Illegal Sports Betting at Borgata Casino in Atlantic City. ATLANTIC CITY, Nov. 14 — It was just another Wednesday at the cavernous Poker Room in Atlantic City’s poshest casino, the Borgata. The cocktail waitresses were gliding around in economical black dresses and the dealers were holding court at packed tables. No one was paying any attention to the television monitors tuned to CNN. Had they sneaked a peek, they would have seen a familiar image: the Poker Room. For the better part of the last two years, law-enforcement officials say, the Poker Room has been home to an illegal betting ring on college and professional football and basketball that raked in $22 million, right under the noses of myriad cameras and agents from the Casino Control Commission and the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement. And on Wednesday, State Attorney General Anne Milgram announced that 23 people — including 4 men with alleged ties to organized crime in Philadelphia and 2 floor supervisors at the Borgata — had been charged with a variety of offenses. In an indication of how complex the operation was, law enforcement officials said that the ring relied on two wire rooms in Philadelphia and involved perhaps hundreds of bettors. They said the ringleader, Andrew Micali, an unemployed 32-year-old from Ventnor with ties to the Merlino crime family, was a regular at the Poker Room. The investigation marks the third time in the last year that state or federal authorities in New Jersey have cracked an illegal sports betting ring. One involved a former National Hockey League coach and player, Rick Tocchet, who later pleaded guilty. Another centered on an Internet gambling ring and ensnared Rudy Garcia, a former assemblyman from Hudson County, who has pleaded not guilty. But law enforcement officials said the announcement was noteworthy because it was the first time they could recall anyone with alleged organized crime ties being charged with illegal gambling in Atlantic City. “They greatly underestimated our vigilance and determination to keep organized crime out of Atlantic City’s casinos,” Ms. Milgram said. Ms. Milgram emphasized that the Borgata’s management had cooperated in the investigation from the outset, and that the betting ring had not compromised any of the legal poker games. “The responsibility lies with those folks who allowed themselves to be corrupted,” said Capt. Al Della Fave, a spokesman for the State Police. “It all comes down to greed.” Law enforcement officials said they began their investigation, called “Operation High Roller,” based on a tip received in March 2006. Relying on video surveillance and other techniques, they determined that illegal gamblers were told whom to place bets with in the Poker Room. The two wire rooms in Philadelphia then handled the bets. The casino employees who participated in the ring ignored exchanges of cash and casino chips to skirt financial reporting requirements, they said. “There were transactions by the defendants using casino chips, in a way that would allow them to hide the proceeds of their criminal activity,” Ms. Milgram said. “Or, to say it more bluntly, taking cash, turning it into chips, washing the chips through some of the process by either betting or being involved with other bettors, and then taking the money, getting it out.” Those who lost, she added, were forced to take out loans at interest rates exceeding 50 percent, violating state law. In all, 5 people were arrested on Wednesday and 18 were issued summonses, on charges of promoting gambling, money laundering and criminal usury. Investigators said they found more than $40,000 in Borgata chips and cash in Mr. Micali’s safe deposit box at the casino, and that they seized gambling records, a laptop computer and a loaded .357-caliber semiautomatic handgun at his home. The state Casino Control Commission is expected to discipline the six casino employees who were charged, and it is likely that their licenses will be revoked, said Daniel Heneghan, a spokesman for the commission. Rob Stillwell, a spokesman for the Borgata, said that the casino had done everything it could to ensure that its gambling operations were not tainted. But Wednesday’s announcement was likely to be a reminder of just how skittish New Jersey has always been about the specter of organized crime in the casinos. When the state authorized legalized casino gambling in Atlantic City in 1977, Gov. Brendan T. Byrne said: “I’ve said it before and I will repeat it again to organized crime: Keep your filthy hands off Atlantic City. Keep the hell out of our state!”
Two men get prison in A.C. gambling ring. MAYS LANDING, N.J. - It was one of the longest winning streaks in Atlantic City casino history. For nearly 20 months, investigators say, Jack Buscemi Jr., 51, and Andrew Micali, 33, turned the high-stakes poker lounge of the Borgata Casino Hotel & Spa into their cash cow, walking away with an estimated $2 million in winnings. Problem was, their game wasn't poker. It was bookmaking. Illegal sports betting. Yesterday, the two cashed out. Buscemi and Micali each were sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison by Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Michael Donio, who called their operation "highly organized" and extremely profitable. Authorities say the bookmaking ring, which included wire rooms in Philadelphia and ties to computerized offshore betting establishments, generated about $60 million in wagers during a 20-month period that began in 2006. Get the news you need to start your day. Investigators with the New Jersey State Police also allege that Buscemi, Micali, and several of their associates engaged in loan-sharking and money-laundering. The operation produced about $2 million in profits for the two lead defendants, officials said. Buscemi, Micali, and about 20 others were arrested in November 2007 after a two-year investigation by the state police, dubbed Operation High Roller. Authorities say the ring had ties to organized crime, but Donio said yesterday that he did not find that in the evidence provided by the Attorney General's Office. "This type of gambling activity is, in my view, simply a crime of greed," Donio said. The judge said that leadership roles played by Buscemi and Micali warranted the maximum prison sentences he imposed. One reputed mob figure, suspected hitman Anthony Nicodemo, 37, of South Philadelphia, was charged in the investigation. He is awaiting sentencing after pleading guilty to conspiracy. While the judge may not have adopted the view of state investigators who said the operation was mob-linked, he did endorse their description of the gambling ring as highly organized, extremely lucrative, and audacious. The case was built around wiretaps, video surveillance, and informant testimony. Much of it focused on Micali, who allegedly ran the day-to-day operations in the poker lounge. A former South Philadelphia resident who now lives in Ventnor, Micali literally set up shop there, authorities said. He would sit at a poker table with stacks of money - chips and cash - in front of him and use a laptop to track games and betting lines. Video-surveillance cameras, they said, followed him as he settled up with gamblers who had won or lost. Micali also maintained a safety deposit box in the casino where he kept cash, they said. Neither Buscemi, of Mullica Hill, nor Micali was questioned about the operation yesterday. Both entered guilty pleas several months ago. Buscemi, described by authorities as one of the biggest bookmakers in the Philadelphia area, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money-laundering. He was charged with being the leader of the gambling operation. Micali, who pleaded guilty to loan-sharking, was accused of managing the enterprise. Buscemi also was ordered to pay slightly more than $50,000 in fines and forfeitures. The forfeitures included a 2002 Chrysler automobile seized during the investigation. Micali was assessed $125,000 in fines and forfeitures. Each was led away in handcuffs to begin serving his sentence in state prison. Officials with the Borgata cooperated in the investigation, in which two former casino workers were also charged. In comments before he was sentenced, Micali asked the judge for leniency for his codefendants, who he said were friends and, in some cases, like family to him. He did not plead for leniency in his own case. "My mom always said that if you do something wrong, you have to deal with the consequences," he said, his voice cracking. "Today I'm here to deal with the consequences." Micali's mother and girlfriend were among those arrested when the case broke. Charges against them have been substantially downgraded. Six minor defendants were sentenced to probation by Donio during a series of related hearings in his third-floor courtroom. All pleaded guilty to promoting gambling and were placed on three years' probation. Those sentenced were Matthew Zambanini, 29, of Hockessin, Del., and William DePena, 40, John Findlay, 32, Dominic Grande, 29, and brothers Joseph Baldino Jr., 25, and Frank Baldino, 22, all of Philadelphia. Frank Baldino was also sentenced to 150 hours of community service. The others were sentenced to from 90 to 270 days in the Atlantic County Jail, but can work off the time by periodically reporting for a jail-run community work program as long as they maintain permanent employment. The judge also imposed fines ranging from $3,000 to $6,000 on those defendants. To date, 13 defendants in the case have been sentenced. Five others are awaiting sentencing.
Mob tape may play role at sentencing. It was a wiseguy lesson in street-corner economics, a how-to-succeed-in-business speech that you won't hear at the Wharton School. Reputed mob soldier Anthony Nicodemo was explaining about the "sharks" and the "lions" and the "lambs" to bookmaker Andrew Micali, who was running an illegal multimillion-dollar sports-betting operation out of the poker room of the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa in Atlantic City. Nicodemo, 36, "exercised leadership authority" over the $60 million betting enterprise, according to New Jersey authorities who used the secretly recorded 13-minute conversation to support that allegation in a gambling indictment. He faces sentencing this week for his role in the operation. "I'm always in your corner, so you don't have to worry about no sharks at all," said Nicodemo, apparently referring to unnamed individuals who were trying to get a piece of Micali's action. "You don't have to worry about no one. Anyone comes up, it could be . . . John Gotti's son could come up to ya, anybody. I don't give a -." His voice rising, Nicodemo then told Micali to contact him at his real estate office on Federal Street in South Philadelphia if anyone caused a problem. Get the news you need to start your day. "Anyone in . . . the world's atmosphere comes up to you, come to 1246 Federal St." The conversation was recorded March 5, 2007, as part of a New Jersey State Police investigation dubbed Operation High Roller. Investigators used court-authorized wiretaps to record hundreds of conversations during the 20-month probe. Last April, 24 defendants, including Nicodemo and Micali, were indicted on gambling, money-laundering, and loan-sharking charges. Most have pleaded guilty. In February, Micali, 33, and Jack Buscemi Jr., 51, the leaders of the operation, were sentenced to five years in prison. Nicodemo, who has pleaded guilty to a gambling conspiracy charge, is to appear Thursday before Atlantic County Superior Court Judge Michael Donio. He could get up to three years in prison. Authorities are expected to point to the conversation with Micali to argue that the bookmaking ring was tied to the mob and that Nicodemo was the organization's point man. The investigation also has shed light on an ongoing FBI investigation that is believed to target Nicodemo and reputed South Philadelphia mob boss Joseph "Uncle Joe" Ligambi. A State Police affidavit in the Borgata case states that the FBI considers Nicodemo a "prime suspect" in the gangland murder of John "Johnny Gongs" Casasanto in 2003. It is one of three unsolved mob hits included in an ongoing FBI racketeering probe. The phone call also provided an underworld perspective on the never-ending game of cat-and-mouse that pits law enforcement against wiseguys and their associates. At one point, Nicodemo referred to an investigation in Delaware County that had targeted bookmaker Nicholas "Nicky the Hat" Cimino. Law enforcement, Nicodemo told Micali, was building cases around the fringes of the organization because it was unable to get at "the whales," an apparent reference to Ligambi and the other reputed leaders of the crime family. "Everything's been so quiet, that . . . the real whales that they want, they can't get," he said. "If you notice, they're bothering a lot of fringe people. Nicky from Delaware County's in trouble." Last summer, Cimino and a dozen others were arrested in Operation Delco Nostra, a Pennsylvania State Police investigation into a mob-linked gambling ring in Delaware County. Another prime target of that probe was Louis "Bent Finger Lou" Monacello. Monacello is a close associate of jailed mobster George Borgesi, Ligambi's nephew. "They're bothering the fringe people," Nicodemo said in the conversation that took place more than a year before those arrests. "That's who they're starting to torture." Because of technical problems, the taped phone call only captured Nicodemo. Micali's voice was not picked up. Investigators, however, had little trouble reading between the lines as Nicodemo counseled Micali to "tone down" his flashy appearance and free-wheeling style because it might attract law enforcement's attention and it sparked jealousy among other mobsters who wanted to get their hooks into his business. "Tone it down a little bit," Nicodemo told Micali. "The people that we always talk about, they're going back and they're throwing bait into the ocean and telling the sharks things like, 'Ooooh, this guy did this.' . . . They're throwing jealousy and innuendo. . . . 'Oooh, you should see the piles of money they got in front of them when they play cards.' . . . So, you go play with lesser chips." Then Nicodemo offered a lesson about the underworld's haves and have-nots. "Like I always say, the lions are on top of the hill and the lambs are down in the valley," he said. "When the lions got meat and the lambs got meat, everything's fine and dandy. When the lambs got meat and the lion's up there on the hill and he don't have nothin', what's gonna happen?" Things had changed in the underworld, Nicodemo told Micali. "Back 30 years ago, all the lions were fully fed," he said. "They didn't care about the lambs, you know what I mean? Today, the lions are starving." Micali should stop wearing "diamonds on your neck" in the poker room, Nicodemo counseled. And it would be smarter if he drove his Honda to the casino, he said. Authorities said Micali spent several hours each day in the poker lounge taking bets and collecting from or paying off customers. He usually drove from his condo in Ventnor to the Borgata in his $130,000 Mercedes. Nicodemo again emphasized that he would back up Micali in any dispute. "Ya ever have a problem . . . come and see me. . . . I don't care if it's . . . Carlo Gambino's son. . . . Don't worry about none of that stuff." He told Micali that everyone knew he was "doing the right thing." That was a reference, law enforcement believed, to the fact that Micali was working with organized-crime figures in his business. Then, in what investigators interpreted as an offer to expand that relationship, Nicodemo told Micali that if he would "tone it down . . . they're going to want you to do more of the right thing. You understand what I mean?"

Super Bowl 2021 betting preview: Best bets and odds on points spread, props and more. The Super Bowl will attract billions of dollars of bets as the Buccaneers battle the Chiefs for the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Article bookmarked. Find your bookmarks in your Independent Premium section, under my profile. The Super Bowl is here and Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers welcome Patrick Mahomes and defending champions Kansas City Chiefs to their own home to decide who lifts the Vince Lombardi Trophy. While the action on the field is of interest from a sporting sense, the big game draws an enormous amount of interest from the gambling industry, pulling in many casual fans, with data showing approximately 26 million Americans will wager on the game in some capacity for a total of around $7 billion (£5.1 billion). Betfair spokesman Sam Rosbottom confirmed that 90 per cent of bets last year, when the Chiefs upset the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LIV, came on the Sunday itself, while he also confirmed from the bookies’ perspective, Brady and the Bucs causing the upset would be the worst-case scenario given their popularity with punters - with some of them able to match the Bucs before the season started at 74/1 for a mega payout. There is not just the action on the field to consider when making a bet, you can find a wager on pretty much anything surrounding the event as a whole: including the national anthem, sung by Eric Church and Jazmine Sullivan, the half-time concert by The Weeknd and even what colour the Gatorade bath will be for the winning coach.
п»їGreyhound Racing Betting Odds. Greyhound racing is still legal and happens in some US states and in other countries, like South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, and the UK. Going online and using bookmakers or greyhound betting sites are the best ways to bet on greyhound races these days. Similar to horse racing, you bet on an animal to win the race it’s running in. The types of odds you’ll encounter in racebooks depend on where the competition is taking place. Prices are expressed as fractions in the UK and Ireland races. In the United States and elsewhere, the odds are in decimal or moneyline form. If you’re looking for an online betting site to kick off your passion for betting with real money, then you’ve come to the right place. What’s more, we give you flexibility with your bets. We offer different bet types to provide choices to the punters placing their wagers on greyhound racing sites online. Ready to place wagers on the next race but haven’t registered with us yet? Just follow these simple steps to start betting right away and avail of bonuses and promos. Register with us and create your account. Log in to your new account and make a deposit to fund it. Now, you have money to bet. Use the menu to find your chosen greyhound racing event. Choose the type of bet and place your bets following the simple steps outlined by our user-friendly interface. On the bet slip, enter your stake amount, and click “submit.” You have just made your bet. How Odds Work. Each greyhound racer is listed by number on the odds board (or tote board). Odds are posted next to this number. These odds are only for the win pool and have no relation to the place, show, quinella, or any other pool. The odds often change before the race, based on the amount of money being bet on each dog. The change in odds also varies depending on the number of wagers placed on a particular dog. As more bets are made, the pool becomes bigger. Note that all bettors who win their bets will share in the overall prize pool. So, as more wagers are placed on a dog for a win or quiniela combination, the odds go down. If fewer bets are placed on a runner, the odds go up. There’s no limit on how much can be won on any single bet. Only the odds determine the amounts. After each race, the odds board will show which dog came in first, second, third, and fourth. Placing Bets Online Using the Different Wager Types. Although greyhound racing is similar to horse racing, you don’t need to be familiar with online horse betting to understand the different bet types on offer at the racetrack. In greyhound racing online, besides wagering on the best greyhound to win, you can bet for it to finish in your predicted position. The different ways for you to bet on greyhound races are listed below. Win Bet (also called Straight Bet): You win if the dog you bet on crosses the finish line first. The standard minimum bet is $2. Exacta Bet or Perfecta Bet (also called Straight Forecast): You select two dogs to finish first and second in the correct order. For example, if you choose # 8 and #4 dogs, #8 must finish first, and # 4 must finish second. Each-Way Bet : This is a combination of two bets, the вЂwin’ and the вЂplace,’ on a single dog. Half of the stake is bet on the dog to win. The other half is for it to place in any position offered in that race. The place requirement depends on the number of runners. For example, a $5 each-way bet will have $5 on the вЂwin’ and $5 on the вЂplace,” for a total of $10. You win on both parts of the bet if the dog you picked wins. The place part of the bet is then paid out at a fraction of the win odds, and this amount will be shown in the betting slip. Place Bet : You collect your payout if your dog finishes first place or second place. Show Bet : You collect if your dog finishes either first, second, or third place. The minimum bet is $2. Daily Double : Predict which dogs will win race one and race two. You must buy your daily double tickets before the running of the first race. The minimum bet is $2. Quinella or Quiniela Bet (also called Reverse Forecast): You select two dogs to finish together, placing first and second, regardless of the order. One popular quinella bet is the box, in which you select three or more dogs. When two of them finish first and second, regardless of order, you win. If you go with the #1, #2, and #3 dogs, for example, you will win as long as two of the three finish first and second. Trifecta Bet (also called Straight Trifecta): This bet involves picking three dogs in their exact order to finish first, second, and third. If you bet a trifecta 1-4-7, for example, #1 must finish first, # 4 second, and # 7 third for you to collect on this ticket. Trifecta Key : A key bet can be applied if you have a strong preference for one dog. In a trifecta key, you play 3 dogs. You key a dog to finish first, followed by two dogs to place in any order. For example, you bet $1 trifecta key on 1 with 2 and 3. You are essentially making two $1 bets, so your bet total is $2. Your key greyhound #1 must win, and the other two must finish either 1-2-3 or 1-3-2 for you to get a payout. Trifecta Wheel : Pick one dog to finish first and wheel all other greyhounds in the race to finish in second and third. You can also pick the second place dog or third place dog, wheeling all others to finish in the remaining positions. Payout varies by the number of dogs in the race. Superfecta : You select four dogs to finish in exact order. This straight bet may also be a $1 box or $1 wheel, just as the trifecta bet is. For example, a superfecta 1-3-4-7 must finish in exact order to collect your payout. Often, the races end in an “all” situation. This happens, for example, when no one picked the 4th place dog. In this case, anyone who bet the 1-2-4 and any number for the fourth position shares the pot. Boxing a Wager : You can box a quinella, exacta, trifecta, or superfecta bet. Boxing a bet means the order by which the dogs finish does not matter. For example, a quinella box 2-4-6 means that two of the three numbers must finish first and second in any order. If you box a trifecta 2-4-6, all three greyhounds must finish first, second, and third in any order. States Where Greyhound Racing Is Legal. Greyhound racing in the USA predominantly takes place in Florida. However, the states of Texas, Alabama, Iowa, Arkansas, and West Virginia also have active racetracks. The laws governing whether dog racing is even legal varies from state to state across the United States.

When looking for the best sports betting sites, therefore, the most important issues to consider are the perks that come with the websites. This will ensure you enjoy the greatest sports betting online experience. These perks include signing bonuses and easy usability among others. In this article, we are going to review three of the best online betting sites, which are Bovada, BetOnline, and MyBookie. #1 Bovada. Bovada has continually offered promotions and offers to its customers. For instance, first-time deposits for sports get bonuses of 50 percent for deposits up to $250, 100 percent for deposits up to $1000 for casino bets, and 100 percent for deposits up to $1000 as poker bonus. Making a deposit or a withdrawal is easy and only attracts a small fee. For first-time deposits, the processing fee of 4.9 percent is waivered. Payouts are done using rapid transfer, otherwise known as money gram. Bovada allows sports betting online on their user-friendly mobile interface or in their state of the art poker and casino gaming rooms. The minimum wager online is $1 and $50 for mobile bets. The only limitation to using Bovada is that the odds are posted late and that they have very low wager limits. #2 BetOnline. Licensed and regulated in Panama, BetOnline offers sports, live, poker, casino, and live dealer types of betting. It offers a wide range of payment options and several accepted currencies, thus making it one of the most convenient sites for customers across the world. You get a welcome bonus of 50 percent on deposits up to $2500. However, bonus levels are tiered for different types of wagering. The online game library is categorized into 3D slots, table games, slots, and video poker. Most of the bets are placed online since their mobile platform only allows sports betting. Maximum and minimum deposits and withdrawals are different for different payment options that are offered on BetOnline. Its major shortcoming is that it has high rollover requirements that customers might find difficult to understand. #3 MyBookie. MyBookie is one of the newest top online sports betting sites in the market. It was established in 2014 in Costa Rica and is fast growing to compete with other older bet staking sites. The minimum online wager on MyBookie is $10 and the maximum is $1000. For mobile wagers, however, there are no limits. Their customer service is also highly efficient and offers top-notch customer service. This puts them among the best online betting sites today. MyBookie, however, only caters to recreational gamblers as opposed to other top sites that allow professional gambling. Apparently, Lindgren asked Full Tilt owner Chris Ferguson for a $2 million loan, and the money was accidentally transferred twice to his bank account back in April 2011. Like much of the money that Lindgren has received from backers and poker players over the last few years, this was not returned. Gambling Debts Made Public. Others chimed in and it quickly became clear that Lindgren had a real problem—he was a compulsive gambler who used his poker income to make enormous bets which turned him from millionaire into pauper. “I think that a lot of people don’t realize that since 2004, I’ve paid back, before I ever got a Full Tilt payment, I had paid back over $3 million in debt, I was probably $6 million in debt in ’04 and I paid about $3 million and then at various times I lost a lot of money in golf or sports,” Lindgren told Bluff Magazine. “I took some hits and I was probably at my worst about $10 million in debt. Going in to Black Friday I think I had it down under $2 million.” The Road to Recovery. Lindgren entered rehab Morningside Recovery at Newport Beach, California, with his priority being to get himself into a position where he could return to being able to support his wife and family. He filed bankruptcy proceedings but the court did not discharge the debt to Full Tilt. The filing for recovery by the Rational Group may be just the first salvo in a corporate strategy to recover as much as possible from Full Tilt’s former debtors. It is believed that a number of other former Full Tilt Pros also have outstanding debts to the company. Recovering anything from Lindgren may not be easy—his income collapsed in 2011, and although he can still be seen playing in events like the WSOP , where he managed a fifth place finish for $129,192 in last year’s $10k NLHE Six Handed, most of his winnings go to the people who are still prepared to back him to play poker.

The Chiefs are the public's favorite for Super Bowl 55 with 60% of against the spread bets placed on Kansas City. The Chiefs opened as 3.5-point favorites but some big bets placed on the Buccaneers have dropped the line to a flat 3 points with 52% of the 2021 Super Bowl betting handle placed on Tampa Bay. The Chiefs still need to win by at least 4 points in order to cover the spread. A win by exactly 3 points now results in a push and all ATS bets being refunded instead of a 3-point loss counting as an ATS win for the Buccaneers. Super Bowl Over/Under. Unlike the spread, sharps and the public are aligned with the total. BetMGM reports 66% of O/U tickets and 62% of the handle are both on the Over; however, the line has dropped from an opener of 57.5 to 56.5. The Chiefs and Buccaneers combining to score 57 or more points is a win for those holding Over tickets on the current total and a final score adding up to 56 or fewer points is a win for the Under. Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe 2020 latest news and analysis. Love’s withdrawal from the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe has sent ructions through the betting market after Aidan O’Brien elected to remove his 1,000 Guineas and Oaks-winning filly from the reckoning at the final declaration stage . The prospect of very soft ground at Longchamp ultimately put O’Brien off running the long-time ante-post favourite, who is now likely to be aimed at the Breeders Cup Turf in November. Enable, who had usurped Love at the head of the Arc odds when the effect of a wet weekend in Paris on the likely going was revealed on Monday, has now hardened as favourite. The six-year-old star has also been the beneficiary of what is traditionally regarded as a plum draw in stall five. Fourteen of the last 18 Arc winners have landed the odds from stall eight or lower, and 13 of those champions were drawn in stall six or lower. O’Brien still has three runners in the race and Ryan Moore, who it’s generally accepted has first pick of the trainer’s runners, has opted to ride the Grand Prix de Paris winner Mogul over Epsom Derby winner Serpentine and Sovereign. How Do Odds Work in Betting? If you are planning to start betting, be it casino gambling, sports betting, or any other type, it's important to understand the odds. It would be preposterous and absurd to think about placing bets without having a good grip on the main types of betting odds and the ability to read and interpret the various associated formats. The three main types of betting odds are fractional (British) odds, decimal (European) odds, and American (moneyline) odds. These are simply different ways of presenting the same thing and hold no difference in terms of payouts. This means that a chance (percentage probability) of an event occurring can be converted and presented in any of the aforementioned types of odds. How Fractional Odds Work. Fractional odds (aka British odds, UK odds, or traditional odds) are popular among British and Irish bookies. These are typically written with a “slash (/)” or a “hyphen (-),” e.g. 6/1 or 6-1 and announced as “six-to-one.” Fractional odds are used by some of the world’s largest bookmakers, making them the most preferred odds across the globe. Therefore, the total (potential) return on a stake can be stated as: For instance, one of the major sports betting websites listed the following fractional odds for futures betting on the team to win the 2017-18 NBA Championship. Below is a selection of the three teams that had the lowest odds of winning. Golden State Warriors: 10/11 Houston Rockets: 9/4 Cleveland Cavaliers: 7/1. It can quickly be determined that the Golden State Warriors are the favorites while the odds on Houston and Cleveland winning are longer. That is, one wins only $10 against every $11 wagered on Golden State to be the champions. Meanwhile, one wins $9 against each $4 (i.e. 3.25 times) put at stake for Houston to win, which is a bit less probable. For Cleveland, one wins $7 against each $1 bet. In the above example, if you bet $100 on Golden State to win, you could make a $90.91 profit [$100 x (10/11)], and could get back your initial stake of $100, resulting in a total payout of $190.91. However, if you wager $100 on Houston to win, you could receive a profit of $225 [$100 x (9/4)], in addition to the $100 initial stake leading to a total payout of $325. The potential profit for a Cleveland win would be even higher, as you could make a profit of $700 [$100 x (7/1)]. With the initial stake of $100 being returned, it would make for a total payout of $800. How Decimal Odds Work. Decimal odds (aka European odds, digital odds, or continental odds) are popular in continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. These are a bit easier to understand and work with. The favorites and underdogs can be spotted instantaneously by looking at the numbers. The decimal odds number represents the amount one wins for every $1 wagered. For decimal odds, the number represents the total payout, rather than the profit. In other words, your stake is already included in the decimal number (no need to add back your stake), which makes its total payout calculation easier. The total (potential) return on a stake can be calculated as: For instance, one of the renowned betting websites priced the candidates to win the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election. Here, we list the decimal odds for the candidates and the biggest long shot among the candidates listed by the bookmaker. Donald Trump: 4.00 Joe Biden: 1.3. These numbers merely represent the amount one could win against each $1 put at stake. Therefore, if one bets $100 on Donald Trump to be re-elected as president, this person could make a total payout of $400 ($100 x 4.00). This amount includes the initial stake of $100, giving a net profit of $300. Similarly, a bettor could make a total payout of $130 ($100 x 1.3) if they successfully bet $100 on Joe Biden. Deducting $100 from this return gives the bettor the net profit earned. Reviewing the prices that the bookmaker has set for each candidate, it can be determined that according to the bookmaker, the probability of Biden (favorite) winning the election is higher than that for Trump. The higher the total payout (i.e. the higher the decimal odd), the less probable (and riskier) it is for the listed candidate to win. How American (Moneyline) Odds Work. Let’s understand this with the help of an example: One of the popular betting websites priced the NCAA "Sweet 16" men's basketball game between Duke and Syracuse on March 23, 2018, with the following moneyline odds. In this matchup, there is a big difference between the two odds, indicating a much higher probability of Duke winning the game and advancing to the next round of the NCAA Tournament. Key Takeaways. The three main types of betting odds are fractional (British) odds, decimal (European) odds, and American (moneyline) odds. These are simply different ways of presenting the same thing, and hold no difference in terms of payouts. Fractional odds are the ratio of the amount (profit) won to the stake; Decimal odds represent the amount one wins for every $1 wagered; and American odds, depending on the negative or positive sign, either indicate the amount one needs to wager to win $100 or the amount one would win for every $100 staked. The Bottom Line. If you are planning to enter the betting or the gambling world, it is important to be able to understand and interpret all types of odds well. Once you have mastered the three popular types of odds (fractional, decimal, and American), you can move towards a more detailed read on this topic and find out how the house always wins. Please refer to Understanding the Math Behind Betting Odds & Gambling for the conversion between the different formats of odds, the conversion of odds into implied probabilities, and the differences between the true chances of an outcome as well as the odds on display.
How To Compile Your Own Odds. January 12, 2016 By Bradley Gibbs. Looking for GOOD Football Trading Strategies? Would you like to cut to the chase and learn the BEST football trading strategies that will allow you to make a second or even primary income? Interested in becoming a member? And getting a FULL portfolio of 8 strategies? This is a guest post from sports betting expert and successful punter Bradley Gibbs. This is definitely a very important read for anyone who wants to punt profitably and you should bookmark this page and refer back to it very, very often! Being able to compile your own odds is one of the key steps to being a successful punter. All of the profiting gamblers I’ve ever met or have indeed read about price up events for themselves and stress the importance of doing so. This article takes a look at why it is very useful to compile odds, and how it can be achieved. Who compiles odds? Many people associate odds compiling and the pricing up of events as practices carried out solely by bookmakers or the people bookmakers employ to do so – often known as вЂodds compilers’. The bookmaker forms a market by compiling a set of odds and the punter comes along and places their bet. The majority of punters are happy to accept whatever odds are offered on a particular market and place their bets without thinking too much of it, and for much of the betting world this is how it goes. But of course, as with many things, there are a few diamonds in the rough, a small percentage of punters out there who aren’t willing to conform to this normality. These are the shrewd punters who make that extra effort to tilt the scales in their favour by compiling their own odds. In doing so this type of punter uses their own odds in comparison with the odds set by the bookmaker in order to find and exploit good value. Why compile our own odds? If you’re serious about making a success of your punting efforts then compiling your own odds is something you really ought to be doing. For you can be sure, at least to some degree, that the successful minority are indeed compiling their own sets of odds. To some it might seem a bit long winded and perhaps even unnecessary to compile your own set of odds for each market you want to bet on, but the reality is – as with almost everything in life – to get results you have to put the work in. Pricing up events is an essential part of the work carried out by the serious punter. The main advantage of pricing up events is that it allows the punter to compare their own prices with those available with the bookmakers or on the exchange. What do you need to price up? It seems to be a fairly common misconception that compiling your own odds is a highly advanced process and can only be done by those who are blessed with a superior mathematical brain. This is simply not true. You don’t need to be a numbers genius to price up events for yourself, all you really need to do is be able to carry out some simple arithmetic. It is important to note that although you don’t need to be a particularly gifted mathematician to compile your own odds, you will need a strong knowledge of the event you’re planning to price up. For example if you’ve only got a beginners knowledge of racing then compiling your own odds will be pretty pointless as you will likely be hugely inaccurate. So first off make sure you are thoroughly educated in the sport you’re going to bet on. How do you compile your own odds? Pricing up a simple football market: Let’s use a simple win/draw/win football market example to put this into practice. We’ll imagine that top four chasing, Tottenham are travelling to face struggling, Newcastle. We’ll start by looking at the relative home and away form of each side. To keep the example simple let’s look at Newcastle’s last 10 home games and Tottenham’s last 10 away games. Newcastle last 10 home games = Won 3, lost 4 and drawn 3 Tottenham last 10 away games = Won 3, lost 3 and drawn 4. What we now need to do is use these figures to determine the odds on a home win, away win and the draw. To get a Newcastle win we add their 3 home wins to Tottenham’s 3 way losses = 6 To get a price for the draw we add 3 Newcastle draws to the 4 Tottenham draws = 7 To get Tottenham’s price we add their 3 away wins to Newcastle’s 4 losses = 7. This leaves us with the following: Newcastle 6, Draw 7 and Tottenham 7. In order to get the percentage chances from this all we do is divide each number by the total number of matches sampled. So in this case 20. Newcastle percentage = 6/20 = 30% Tottenham percentage = 7/20 = 35% Draw = 7/20 = 35% As discussed above all we do now is simply divide 100 by the percentage figure in order to express the chances of each team as odds. Newcastle – 100/30 = 3.33 Tottenham – 100/35 = 2.85 Draw – 100/35 = 2.85. We have now priced the win/draw/win market up as; 3.33 for a home win and 2.85 for both a draw and an away victory. Let’s assume that you feel Tottenham are much the stronger team and you expect them to win the game; however, the price available is only 2.65. You wouldn’t bet an away win at these odds simply because they are lower than the odds you have calculated yourself (your own odds being the ones you believe to be the true representation). Betting on a price below this would represent a bad value bet. On the other hand let’s imagine that you could back Tottenham to win at 3.00. At these odds Tottenham would be a better bet and would indeed represent good value. Of course using just a sample of each teams’ relevant home/away form is quite a simple example and there are of course plenty of other factors you can consider when pricing up a game such as this. For example you may wish to consider a longer streak of games, perhaps 20. You can also consider both the home and away form of each side rather than just one or the other. Considering how the teams fared against similar opposition is also something that is recommended. Pricing up a horse race – Pricing up a horse race can be a bit trickier than a simple win/draw/win football market. The main reason for this is that there are less tangible statistics in a horse race. You will need to have an expert knowledge of form and be able to consider all the different factors involved in analysing both races and a particular horses’ chance. As for the actual pricing up of the event itself, then this is pretty much the same as that which is discussed above. It is important to price the race to 100% and assign a percentage figure to each horse in the race. Keeping things simple, let’s say that having analysed a three runner race you have compiled odds on the three runners to 100% and your prices show: 2.00 (50%), 4.00 (25%) and 4.00 (25%). By these calculations you believe that the favourite should be an even money shot and therefore has a 50% chance of winning. However, the actual prices available are: 2.50 (40%), 3.00 (33.3%) and 3.50 (28.6%). If this were to be the case – assuming you were right in your analysis – the value would lie in betting the favourite at a price of 2.00. This is simply because judging by your own prices the horse has a 10% greater chance of winning the race than the odds available suggest. There are a lot of factors to consider when pricing up a race, so as a basic starting point it is advised that when beginning to do so you focus on smaller field events – probably 8 runners or less. Any more can become quite a headache, even for the more experienced odds compiler! The best thing to do before attempting to price up a horse race is to simply know your stuff! Learn about the different aspects of analysing racing and race form, there is tons of information out there, most of which is readily available at the click of a button. Read up on everything you can regarding the best ways to look at races and just generally learn as much as possible! The benefits of compiling your own odds. As we can see from both the racing and football examples above, the reason punters would choose to price up events for themselves is that it helps to both identify and exploit value. Of course “value” or “true odds” can be pretty vague terms, after all despite what some people may say, whether or not a selection represents good or bad value is never really more than matter of opinion, an opinion that is only proved right or wrong after the event has finished. There is no doubt that being able to compile your own odds – using them as a comparison with those that are available on betting exchanges or with bookmakers – is an invaluable skill when aiming to be successful as a punter. Being able to do this though is nowhere near as useful as being able to do it correctly! This comes from hard work and knowing your stuff. The bottom line is this; work hard, learn all there is to learn, practice compiling your own odds and through a combination of having an expert understanding of betting on your sport and the ability to compile your own odds you will give yourself an edge over the majority of the betting world.

In simplest terms, odds are a way of expressing the relationship between the number of favorable outcomes in a given situation versus the number of unfavorable outcomes. Usually, this is expressed as a ratio (like 1 : 3 or 1/3 ). Calculating odds is central to the strategy of many games of chance, like roulette, horse racing and poker. Whether you're a high-roller or simply a curious newcomer, learning how to calculate odds can make games of chance a more enjoyable (and profitable!) activity. David Jia Academic Tutor Expert Interview. 14 January 2021. Let's say we bet that we'll roll either a one or a two. In this case, there's two possibilities where we win - if the dice shows a two, we win, and if the dice shows a one, we also win. Thus, there are two favorable outcomes. David Jia Academic Tutor Expert Interview. 14 January 2021. In the example with the die, if we bet that we'll roll either a one or a two, that means we'll lose if we roll a three, four, five, or six. Since there are four ways that we can lose, that means that there are four unfavorable outcomes. Another way to think of this is as the Number of total outcomes minus the number of favorable outcomes. When rolling a die, there are a total of six possible outcomes - one for each number on the die. In our example, then, we would subtract two (the number of desired outcomes) from six. 6 - 2 = 4 unfavorable outcomes. Similarly, you may subtract the number of unfavorable outcomes from the total number of outcomes to find the number of favorable outcomes. David Jia Academic Tutor Expert Interview. 14 January 2021. You may choose to represent this ratio as a fraction. In this case, our odds are 2/4 , simplified as 1/2. Note - 1/2 odds don't mean we have a one-half (50%) chance of winning. In fact, we have a one-third chance of winning. Remember when expressing odds that odds are a ratio of favorable outcomes to unfavorable outcomes - not a numerical measurement of how likely we are to win.
Michigan launches online sports betting, casino games Friday. LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Online sports betting and casino games will start in Michigan at noon Friday, an expansion of options for gamblers who now wager through offshore sites. State regulators have authorized licenses for all three Detroit casinos and seven of the dozen tribes with “Class III” casinos. Additional operator and platform provider licenses are expected to be approved in coming weeks. Michigan Gaming Control Board Executive Director Richard Kalm this week called the launch a “new era,” saying it will give casinos an additional way to engage with customers and provide state and local governments with extra tax revenue. Large players in the U.S. mobile gambling market such as DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM are launching apps and enticing people age 21 and older with deals to sign up. Big sporting events this weekend including the AFC and NFC championship games and a UFC bout featuring start Conor McGregor. Sports and internet gambling were legalized under a law enacted more than a year ago, before the coronavirus pandemic struck. Casinos began accepting in-person sports wagers in March but had to wait for the creation of a licensing system for online operations, which have taken on increased significance amid state-ordered shutdowns or capacity restrictions at casinos to curb COVID-19. “It’s clear to us that there’s incredible demand among Michiganders for at least sports betting. But my expectation is that online casino and in due course poker will be equally popular,” said BetMGM CEO Adam Greenblatt. His company’s app — previously launched in 10 states — is connected to MGM Resorts, including the Detroit casino and hotel. Greenblatt said the state’s 8.4% online sports betting tax is “very sensible,” allowing licensed operators to compete with offshore sites. “You’ve got a group of players who have long been betting offshore. We would like to see them bring their play back on shore,” he said. He said there will be minimal if any “cannibalization” of business from players who typically visit casinos but instead will play on the internet. “We see an expansion of the market — so new players coming in to enjoy our product,” Greenblatt said, adding that MGM, like other casinos, will incentivize online gamblers to redeem rewards points by visiting onsite. Casinos offering online games like blackjack will pay a tax of between 20% and 28%, depending on their amount of adjusted gross receipts. Net new annual revenues to the state and Detroit, which has commercial casinos, are projected to total $18.6 million and $13.7 million respectively, according to the Michigan Department of Treasury. The money will go to the state’s school aid fund, which covers public schools. It also will be earmarked to a state fund that compensates first responders for lost wages and medical benefits if they get cancer from fighting fires. Municipalities with tribal casinos will receive a portion of tax revenues, too. Noting of flurry of internet gambling and sports betting ads in recent weeks, state Attorney General Dana Nessel urged potential online gamblers to read the fine print before signing up. “In some instances, site users may be required to spend or deposit a certain amount of money into an account before receiving their free play credits, and users should make themselves aware of such conditions so they are not taken off guard,” she said.
Casinos, Online Sports Betting Gaining Traction In Virginia. Along with drafting regulations for proposed casinos, the Virginia Lottery has approved five permits for live sports wagering in Virginia. Mark Hand , Patch Staff. VIRGINIA — The Virginia Lottery Board on Wednesday approved initial regulations for proposed casinos in Bristol, Danville, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Richmond. In 2020, the General Assembly designated the Virginia Lottery as the regulator of casinos in the state, along with mobile sports wagering. For casinos, the Virginia Lottery will require that each game that operates electronically be connected to a central monitor and control system. Casino wagers must be conducted only with tokens, chips, or electronic cards purchased from the facility operator. Casinos will not be allowed to extend credit to players. The Virginia Lottery said it will refine the initial regulations through a rulemaking process that will include an opportunity for public participation. The 2020 casino legislation passed by the General Assembly required adoption of an initial regulatory framework by April 2021. At its Wednesday meeting, the Virginia Lottery Board also received an update on the recent launch of mobile sports betting in Virginia. Live sports wagering launched in Virginia on Jan. 21 and now includes five approved permit holders: FanDuel in conjunction with the Washington Football Team; Draft Kings; BetMGM LLC; Rivers Casino Portsmouth; and Caesars Virginia LLC. "The Lottery's role as regulator is based on its three-decade track record as a respected and trusted gaming authority in the Commonwealth," Kevin Hall, executive director of the Virginia Lottery, said in a statement. "The Lottery's professional staff and our Board will work to protect the public interest by ensuring the integrity of casino gaming through the strict enforcement of the law and our regulations." For casino operators, the Virginia Lottery said it will conduct a review of casino operators when applications are submitted, including criminal history and financial reviews of designated gaming operators. Regulatory requirements also will specify internal controls and on-site security and surveillance requirements.
E-Sports, Sports Betting and Online Casino Trends to Look Forward to in 2021. Gambling. By Joe Newberry February 2, 2021 6:04 pm. By Joe Newberry | February 2, 2021 6:04 pm. 2021 is before us, and several persons don’t know what to anticipate after 2020. Whether in sports, politics, or society, we cannot help but wonder what will change and stay the same. One of the substitutes that sports fans turned to during lockdown was gaming. For those who enjoy a wager, the world of casino games was a particular draw, offering both a distraction and that excitement of placing a bet of different type . For online casinos, we have insight into how 2021 will pan out and what events will take the forefront in the industry. From gambling habits to payment for games, several trends are set to take the stage. Let us consider five of such trends. Trend 1: Mobile Gambling. Mobile gambling is not new to an online casino, especially as smartphones continued to gain popularity. Although many people already use mobile phones to carry out their gambling activities, we expect more widespread use. As of 2019, about 50% of people used their phones for gambling. This figure is bound to increase in 2021 after the coronavirus lockdown led people to depend on their mobile phones to play casino and other games online. Suffice to say that many people must have discovered how secure and easy it is to gamble on their mobile phones. We expect that even if restrictions ease and physical casinos open up, many persons will ditch physical casinos for their online counterparts. Trend 2: Using Cryptocurrency as a payment method. Jan 26, 2020; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Chris Simp Lehr of the Atlanta FaZe competes against the New York Subliners during the Call of Duty League Launch Weekend at The Armory. Mandatory Credit: Bruce Kluckhohn-USA TODAY Sports. We know that crypto is fast becoming a method of payment in many industries at the moment. The casino industry is not doing anything outside the norm by joining the growing list of people embracing cryptocurrency as a payment form. A few years ago, many gamblers couldn’t wrap their heads around how it worked; so many online casinos were hesitant to try crypto. With a lot of exposure to this currency, we expect that in 2021, many online casinos will accept cryptocurrency as payment for gambling. Several casinos already offer bonuses to gamblers who use crypto. Trend 3: Stiffer Competition. Online casinos should prepare for serious competition in 2021, as many new online casinos will flood the market. The ease of setting up new casinos using white labels and the profitability of the industry will make people set up casinos. With hopes that the COVID-19 pandemic will wear off in 2021 , many people will be excited to jump into gambling after a long break. Many people will celebrate the increasing numbers of new online casinos, especially because of the variety they offer. However, finding an online gambling site is a careful process. Find out what casinos are registered, approved, and legitimate before putting in your money. Trend 4: Electronic Sports Betting. The e-sport betting industry is growing fast, even as general sports betting has been famous for a long time. Many online casinos are making e-sports begging a part of their website, and this will continue throughout the year. With the new trend, you won’t only bet on traditional sports, but new sports and events will join the list soon. We expect football, horse racing, and other sports to continue as the most popular sports for gamblers. However, we will also see other professional games and tournaments taking the forefront in online casinos. Gambling licenses are a must-have for legit and approved online casinos , and careful gamblers should always check a casino’s gambling license before putting in their money. The gambling license is a guarantee for gamblers that their deposits and withdrawal options are safe and free of errors. The license also assures you that the game will be fair. If you have not been paying attention to gambling licenses, read through the rest of this post and discover more about gambling licenses, their functions, and what laws back them. First of all, gaming licenses are compulsory for every legitimate casino. They get these licenses from their regulatory bodies or gaming commissions. The requirements for getting licenses to change from one jurisdiction to the next. The rules are made by the gaming commissions that decide what requirements are necessary for an online casino to gain legitimacy. The rules and regulations from these gaming commissions guide the actions of everyone connected to a gambling company. These rules tie the partners, staff, employees, and everyone connected to the company. Such rules span through activities like auditing, accounting, and other activities carried out in the firm. What are the Jurisdictions concerned with gaming licenses? Most of the gambling commissions in the world engage in multiple jurisdictions approaches for their registration. Look out for several jurisdictions that online casinos follow when applying for their licenses. Antigua and Barbuda’s Gaming Jurisdiction. When acquiring a license on both the Caribbean islands of Antigua and Barbuda , online casinos need to get approval from the Financial Services Commission as well as its branch, which is the gambling department. This country offered offshore licenses to online gambling companies, and they have been doing this since 1994. Owners of primary servers in this country pay $75,000 every year and pay 3% taxes from their net winnings. Interactive gaming and online gambling companies pay $75,000 and $100,000 respectively every year. Curacao’s Gaming Commission. Curacao began giving out gaming licenses in 1996. So far, they are one of the most reliable license providers. This famous regulatory body has the same license for sports betting, luck games, and skill games. The Gaming Commission in Malta. In 2000, the republic of Malta got its laws for a state lottery and began handing out licenses to online gambling companies. The lottery and gambling department must set all the rules and regulations for all remote gambling companies. Conclusion. Online casinos and casino gamblers have several positive things to look forward to in 2021. There are hopes that the coronavirus pandemic will ease off and give way to a more active casino season. But whether or not this happens, you can expect these trends to take place. Preparation is important so that you can make the best of these trends for the year and enjoy online casinos all the more!

Texas Holdem. Texas Holdem, sometimes referred to simply as Holdem, is a community card poker betting game with multiple betting rounds leading up to a showdown, in which the player with the best 5-card poker hand is awarded the pot. Websites with Texas Holdem poker games usually offer different tables for different betting structures, such as Pot Limit, Fixed Limit and No Limit. Betting on Texas Holdem games at online poker sites involves several different stake levels to accommodate different playing styles and bankrolls, with micro-stakes as low as $0.05 / $0.10 up to high stakes exceeding $500 / $1,000. Texas Holdem is largely a game of skill, with significant elements of luck mixed in. Players can demonstrate their Texas Holdem skill at poker betting sites by strategically betting, reading opponent tells, bluffing and quickly calculating odds and probabilities. In order to get started with Texas Holdem betting, it’s important to understand the basic rules and strategies involved. Best Poker Sites For Texas Holdem Betting. 18+, T&Cs apply, and Gamble Responsibly (BeGambleAware). How To Bet On Texas Holdem Poker Games. In order to bet on Texas Holdem games, you’ll need to follow some simple poker betting rules designed to maximize fairness and competition among players. The following is a list of steps used to play Texas Holdem at an online Texas Holdem betting site. The rules will be nearly identical for Texas Holdem games hosted at live casinos or home games. The two players to the left of the dealer begin the hand by paying the blinds. The dealer immediately to the left of the dealer pays the small blind, while the next adjacent player posts the big blind. In a $2 / $4 game, for example, the small blind is $2 while the big blind is $4. Players will take turns acting from the dealer’s position, as a dealer button will travel around the table in a clockwise fashion with each hand. Each player receives two cards facedown, starting with the player who posted the small blind. These cards are known as hole cards. Players look at their own hole cards, and the first round of betting begins with the player to left of the big blind. Players can fold, call or raise, and each player gets a chance to make a betting decision in clockwise order. After the first betting round, the dealer places a burn card facedown on the table. This card is effectively discarded. Next, the dealer delivers the flop face-up on the table. The flop contains 3 community cards which are visible to all players. Another betting round occurs, followed by another burn card and the turn. The turn consists of 1 community card placed face-up. A third betting round occurs, followed by a burn card and the river. The river is the final community card. A final round of betting occurs. All remaining players take part in the showdown, in which the pot is awarded to the player with the best hand. Texas Holdem Rules. Players can make a few different betting decisions in a game of Texas Holdem, including check, call, raise and fold. When you fold, you discard your hole cards and eliminate yourself from the hand. At this point, you’ll lose all of the money that you’ve contributed to the pot so far, including the blinds (if you posted them). However, you won’t be required to pay any additional money into the pot. Folding is essentially cutting your losses, preserving your bankroll and waiting for the next hand. When you raise, you’re matching the previous player’s wager and adding a wager of your own. For example, if the previous player wagered $5 and you raise by $10, you’ll place $15 in the pot and the next player will be required to do the same to stay in the hand. When you call, you match the previous player’s wager, but you don’t raise. For example, the previous player might put $7 into the pot. You could call by also placing $7 in the pot. A check is similar to a call, except that it doesn’t require you to bet any money at all. You can only check when there hasn’t already been a raise or a bet. A “bet” is simply the first raise of the hand. Hand Rankings. In Texas Holdem, the goal is to create the best possible five card poker hand using some combination of your two hole cards and the five available community cards. Since this adds up to a total of seven cards, two of the cards will not be used. Texas Holdem hands are ranked as follows, from best to worst: Royal Flush (Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10 suited) Straight Flush (five sequential suited cards) Four of a Kind (such as four Aces or four 5s) Full House (Three of a Kind plus a pair, such as three Kings and two 10s) Flush (five suited cards of any value, such as all Spades) Straight (five sequential cards of any suit) Three of a Kind (such as three Queens) Two Pair (such as two 6s and two 9s) One Pair (such as two Aces) High Card (such as an Ace or King) Game Variations. Within the game of Texas Holdem, there are three different betting structures, including No Limit, Pot Limit and Fixed Limit. In a No Limit Texas Holdem game, there are few restrictions on how much you can bet when it’s your turn to make a betting decision. The smallest bet you can make is the value of the big blind. For example, in a $3 / $6 No Limit Holdem game, the lowest possible bet would be $6. The maximum bet is simply the number of chips you possess. When a player declares he’s going “all-in,” it means he’s wagering the maximum value – his whole stack of chips. After the initial bet, the lowest possible raise is the value of the bet. Although No Limit Texas Holdem is the most popular betting structure used for this game type, Fixed Limit Texas Holdem is quite popular as well. With this Texas Holdem variation, players are not allowed to bet whatever value they wish. Instead, they must wager in increments according to predetermined rules. For example, in a $6 / $12 game, the blind would be $3 and $6. The large bet would be $12, while the small bet is $6. Fixed Limit Holdem games usually have a betting cap, meaning that only a certain number of raises will be allowed per betting round. Pot Limit Texas Holdem is actually quite similar to No Limit. The minimum bet is equal to the value of the big blind. The maximum bet is the amount currently in the pot. In this way, the pot can’t grow by more than 100% of its current size from one bet to the next. Texas Holdem games are also divided into two main categories: cash games and tournaments. A cash game, also known as a ring game, consists of a table with 2 to 10 seats. Players can enter and leave the table at will, buying into the game for a predetermined fee which equals the chips they’ll start with. The game progresses indefinitely, and players who lose their chips can buy more chips to re-enter the game. Texas Holdem tournaments can involve several tables playing simultaneously. In a tournament, the winner of each table (the person who wins all of the chips) moves on to a new table to compete against the winners of other Round 1 tables. In most tournaments, a player who loses all of his chips is eliminated permanently from the tournament. Play continues until only one player remains. The top players are usually paid according to a predetermined prize schedule. Basic Strategy. Texas Holdem betting strategy can become very complicated very quickly, with several influential factors such as odds, tells, player emotions, bluffing, bankroll management and more. However, successful, long-term Texas Holdem play largely comes down to one key concept: tight-aggressive play. In essence, tight-aggressive play means folding your weak hands and waiting for premium hands. When a premium set of hole cards does come your way, you must pursue it aggressively and raise heavily. This will allow you to maximize your profits by seizing a rare opportunity, while minimizing your losses from unlucky hole cards. Tight aggressive play allows for quick poker decisions and minimal emotional effect, also known as tilt.
Texas Hold’em 101. An introduction to Texas Hold’em. There are multiple card games available to play, but by far the most popular one is Texas Hold’em. Whether you have played it or not, chances are you have probably heard of it. It can be seen on TV, online, in poker rooms, and in pretty much every casino. It is a fun and challenging game, one that does not take much time to learn, but can never be perfected. Even the best players in the world make mistakes from time to time. If you have never played the game of hold’em before, this article should be very helpful to you, as it will cover all of the basics. Let’s start off with the simplest of things, the deck. Every card deck has 52 cards, with four suits of 13 cards each. In Texas Hold’em, only one deck is used during play. The decks are changed periodically throughout the game, but only one deck is used at a time. Starting Hands. The chart below illustrates the percentage chance of winning a hand based on starting cards. As you can see AA is the strongest starting hand in poker, followed by KK, QQ, JJ, 10 10, etc. Hand Rankings. Royal flush – A, K, Q, J, 10 , all the same suit. Straight flush – Five cards in a sequence, all in the same suit. 5d 6d 7d 8d 9d Four of a kind – All four cards of the same rank. 4 4 4 4 9 Full house – Three of a kind with a pair. 7 7 7 2 2 Flush – Any five cards of the same suit but are not in a sequence. 3h 8h Jh 4h Qh Straight – Five cards in a sequence but are not of the same suit. 2 3 4 5 6 Three of a kind – Three cards of the same rank. 9 9 9 5 2 Two pair – Two different pairs. J J 6 6 4 Pair – Two cards of the same rank. A A 5 6 K High Card – When you haven’t made any of the hands above, the highest card plays. K 2 4 9 8. Positions. Position in poker refers to where a player is sitting in reference to other players. The dealer is where the button is placed, this is the best position at the table since you will be last to act after the flop comes out. This allows you to see what everyone does before making a decision. When you are on the button, assuming the action is light, you are able to open up your opening range of hands. Position is very important in poker, as it plays a part in your decision making, Next to the dealer (left of the dealer) is small blind. This is the player who will post the first ante which is half of the big blind. Let’s say you are playing on a $1/$2 no limit hold’em table, the small blind is $1. You have to pay that dollar whether you like your hand or not. If you choose to fold without seeing a flop (we will get there soon), you lose your dollar. Small blind is the second to last person to make a decision pre-flop, but the first to make the decision after a flop (this is assuming there are no raises). Left of the of small blind is the big blind who is automatically forced to post the big blind even before seeing his hand. In $1/$2 stakes, he is automatically in for the $2 and will have the option to check (assuming nobody raises), raise, or fold (if someone raises and the big blind does not like his hand). Regardless of the decision, the player must invest the big blind in that hand. Big blind is the last person to make a decision pre-flop, but the second to make the decision after a flop (this is assuming there are no raises and small blind is still in the hand). Left of the big blind is under the gun. This will be the first player to act pre-flop and will not be invested in this pot before the hand is dealt. He or she will have the option to call, fold, or raise. Normally you want to play strong hands from an early position like this one because all other players on the table are still left to act. The closer you are to the blinds is considered early position and the closer you are to the button is consider late position. A player in the best position will always be the player last to act in a hand. Pre-Flop. Every player gets dealt two cards face down, called the hole cards. Under the gun will be the first to act as explained above, he/she will have the option to call the big blind, raise, or fold at no cost. This action will continue across the table until betting has stopped and then we get a flop. The Flop. Once all the pre-flop betting has stopped, the dealer will take the top card on the deck and will place it in the un-dealt cards pile called the burn. He then will flop three cards face up in the center of the table. This will be the first of five community cards to come out. After the flop, the play begins from the left and continues until each player has checked, folded, or bet, and the latest bet is called. The Turn. The turn of fourth street as some refer to it is the fourth community card that is dealt face up. The dealer burns the top card on the deck, then deals the following card face up. Once again, the play begins from the left and continues until each player has checked, folded, or bet, and the latest bet is called. The River. The last community card dealt is the river, also known as fifth street. Once again, the dealer burns one card and deals one face up in the center of the table. Now there are five community cards and the remaining players have their two hole card in hand. The action will once again begin from the left and continues until each player has checked, folded, or bet, and the latest bet is called. Showdown. A showdown occurs when more than one player remains after the last betting round, remaining players expose and compare their hands to determine the winner. This can also occur in any street before the river if a player has bet all of his chips and gets called. Parting Thoughts. You should now have a basic understanding on the game of poker.
