When the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers take the field, they'll bring with them one of the most intriguing quarterback matchups in recent memory. Buccaneers signal-caller Tom Brady will be playing in his 10th Super Bowl and looking for his seventh Lombardi Trophy—at 43 years old. Kansas City's young gunslinger—the 25-year-old Patrick Mahomes—will be playing in his second-consecutive Super Bowl. In only three years as a full-time starter, Mahomes has already won one Lombardi, one Super Bowl MVP and one regular-season MVP. In many ways, this quarterback matchup is representative of the NFL's past and its future. There's a lot more history involved in this game than at the quarterback position, though. Kansas City, which has been in the AFC title game three straight years, may be in the beginning stages of the league's next great dynasty. The Buccaneers are back in the big game for the first time since the 2002 season. Tampa won Super Bowl XXXVII to claim the only Lombardi Trophy in franchise history. Three will be plenty of star power on the field, too—from defensive playmakers like Shaquil Barrett and Chris Jones to pass-catching phenoms like Chris Godwin and Tyreek Hill. Super Bowl LV could be a shootout, a defensive battle or anything in between—though it landing on one extreme end of the spectrum or the other feels unlikely. How do the oddsmakers in Las Vegas see it? We'll examine the latest lines and over/unders from DraftKings Sportsbook, along with a close look at the game itself. Super Bowl LV. Injuries can and often do impact how a game lines up with the lines and over/unders. Therefore, it's worth diving into the final injury report for Super Bowl LV. The good news is that not many players from the playoff roster have officially been ruled out. The only players officially out are Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay and left tackle Eric Fisher. Of course, the Fisher injury could be huge, as right tackle Mitchell Schwartz has been out since Week 6. This means that the Chiefs will be short-handed trying to slow the Buccaneers pass rush and to protect Mahomes. With players like Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul on Tampa's defensive front, Mahomes may be forced to buy a lot of time in the pocket himself. Kansas City wideout Sammy Watkins is listed as questionable, as are Buccaneers receiver Antonio Brown and tight end Cameron Brate. Breakdown. This game may be decided by Tampa's ability to pressure Mahomes. If the Buccaneers can get to Mahomes as they did Aaron Rodgers in the NFC title game—he was sacked five times—Tampa could quickly shift the momentum of this game. Of course, the pass rush is a two-way street, and Brady will have to deal with the likes of Chris Jones when he's on the field. When the Chiefs and Bucs faced off in the regular season, Brady was only sacked once, but he was also forced into two interceptions. Kansas City won that game 27-24. It's worth noting, though, that the Chiefs got off to a hot start in that game before surviving with a three-point win. The Buccaneers may get off to a slow start here, as is typical for Brady. In nine previous Super Bowl appearances, Brady's teams have scored a total of three points in the first quarter. "Hard to explain why or why not that hasn't happened," Brady said, per Michael David Smith of ProFootballTalk. "I'm sure they're all a lot of individual things, why that's happened or not." Expect Brady to put a few more points on the board in this one, though, and to help the score creep past the over. While this may not be a full-on shootout, it's probably not going to be a defensive struggle, either. There will be too much offensive talent on the field—Hill, Travis Kelce, Chris Godwin, Evans, Watkins and Brown are just a few of the notable names—for either of these defenses to completely shut down the opposition. However, a mistake on which a defense can capitalize could decide it. The mistake-battle seems to favor Mahomes there, as he's thrown just six picks all season, while Brady has thrown 15—postseason included. While the Green Bay Packers and Buffalo Bills will tell you that kicking field goals alone isn't enough to best either of these teams, a field goal could be the difference here. After a thrill ride of a 2020 NFL season and three wildly entertaining weeks of playoff action, only the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers remain in contention for Super Bowl LV. Consider it a gift from the football gods. On one side, you have the Chiefs, the defending champs quarterbacked by the electric Patrick Mahomes, 2018's MVP and the reigning Super Bowl MVP. On the other, you have the Buccaneers, a franchise reinvigorated by the offseason addition of the timeless Tom Brady, a six-time Super Bowl champ and three-time MVP. This could be a masterclass in quarterbacking, and the plot lines are almost equally enthralling beyond the marquee position. So what's our early read on the matchup? And what do oddsmakers expect to see? We'll answer all of those questions and more below. Super Bowl LV. Who: Kansas City Chiefs vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. When: Sunday, Feb. 7 at 6:30 p.m. ET. Where: Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida. TV: CBS. Latest Line: Chiefs -3 (O/U 56), via DraftKings Sportsbook. How They Got Here. It took Kansas City five weeks of the regular season to suffer its first loss and another 12 to withstand its second, a game in which the AFC's top seed sat its regulars to keep fresh for the postseason. This is an absurdly dominant team, in other words, as the Buffalo Bills can surely attest. They found themselves on the wrong side of Sunday's AFC Championship Game, in which the Chiefs took a 21-12 lead in to intermission and led by as many as 23 points before cruising to a 38-24 triumph. Mahomes was his usual, magical self, completing 29 of his 38 passes for 325 yards and three scores. Of those attempts, 26 were thrown in the direction of Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, who combined to record 22 receptions for 290 yards and two scores. As for Tampa Bay, which hadn't secured a playoff spot since the 2007 season, it followed Brady's lead to one of the most successful campaigns in franchise history. The Bucs' 11 regular-season wins tied for their second-most all time, and their plus-137 scoring differential (fourth-best in the NFL) also took the silver medal in the organization's annals. The Bucs' passing game grabbed the marquee, which is no surprise given Brady's pedigree and their wealth of pass-catching weaponry, including Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown and longtime Brady favorite Rob Gronkowski. But the rushing game also popped through both Ronald Jones II and Leonard Fournette, and the defense caused all kinds of havoc with 48 sacks (tied for fourth-most) and 15 interceptions (tied for seventh). All elements were on display during their 31-26 takedown of the Green Bay Packers in Sunday's NFC Championship Game. Brady passed for 280 yards and three scores, Godwin cleared 100 receiving yards, Evans snagged a touchdown catch, Fournette rushed for a touchdown and the defense sacked Aaron Rodgers five times and intercepted him once. "Tom is the GOAT," Bucs receiver Scotty Miller told reporters. "Last year, we ended 7-9. This year, we're going to the Super Bowl. He's the biggest reason." What to Expect. The Bucs and Chiefs locked horns once this season, and if that Week 12 contest were any indication, football fans are in for a treat Feb. 7. Kansas City left Raymond James Stadium with a 27-24 win, but not before Tampa Bay made it sweat with a furious second-half comeback. The Chiefs had a 17-0 lead after the first, took a 20-7 advantage into halftime and led 27-10 after three quarters. But a pair of touchdown strikes from Brady to Evans narrowed the gap to just three points with more than four minutes remaining before the Chiefs picked up three first downs to kill the clock. What does that contest mean for this matchup? Probably nothing—other than the fact that this has all-time classic potential. Too much time has passed for it to hold any relevance, and as the playoffs have shown, each team is riding a wave of positive momentum into this championship bout. What could decide this contest? Where do we begin? Can Tampa's pass-rushers get to Mahomes without needing extra help so that it can blanket the back end with downfield defenders? Can Kansas City's secondary limit the big plays that Tampa's vertical passing attack is built around? Will either ground game be much of a factor? Which quarterback will make a costly mistake, and how much can the other make him pay? So where should your wagering money go? Well, that's up to you. But if the experts have this pegged correctly, it's hard to go away from Mahomes—yes, even harder than it is to go against Brady on a stage he knows better than anyone. Thousands of football fans will be placing their first legal Super Bowl bets in Illinois this weekend, and for most, a little action will make the big game just a bit more entertaining. But, for some, it might open the door to regular betting, adding a quick dopamine hit to the regular season viewing experience. Maybe they’ll have to start budgeting for a new habit. Maybe they’ll have to start borrowing for it. And, for a select few, it will get worse. It’s already gotten worse for hundreds of people statewide since Illinois legislators approved a massive gaming expansion a year and a half ago, introducing legal sports wagering to a state that’s already packed with more places to gamble than Las Vegas. The COVID-19 pandemic has made matters even worse, according to Luke, a Chicago-area problem gambler who was able to get out of the game nine years ago. Economic uncertainty and the general malaise of the quarantine lifestyle make gambling all the more enticing. “It used to be that there was a stigma, and gambling was taboo. It was seedy,” said Luke, who asked that his full name not be used. “Now, you can do it on your phone. Calls to the state’s gambling disorder hotline more than doubled from 2019 to 2020, when 13,258 people reached out either there or online for information on a problem that experts say is out of sight but front of mind for a growing number of bettors and their families. The Illinois Department of Human Services, which aims to connect problem gamblers with counseling resources, calls that a “dramatic increase.” In 2019, about 580 people received treatment for gambling disorders through state-sponsored programs across Illinois. That figure jumped past 1,000 in 2020, and experts say it doesn’t even cut the deck as only an estimated 3% of problem gamblers acknowledge they have a problem, and even fewer seek treatment. Counseling gets boost with Illinois gambling expansion — but more addiction is sure to follow. State’s all-in gambling expansion offers new temptation for those struggling to stay out. Hundreds more took the more drastic step of banning themselves from casinos and the smartphone betting apps that have them hooked. About 13,500 people were enrolled in the self-exclusion program maintained by regulators at the Illinois Gaming Board in mid-2019, but that number has since shot past 14,000. Many of those gamblers cite their temptations as coming from the state’s 10 casinos, three horse racing tracks and 7,233 bars, restaurants, gas stations and VFW halls that also house slot machines. But since mobile sports betting launched last summer, Illinoisans can now gamble 24/7 from the comfort of home — and they’ve already lost more than $101 million doing so, according to Gaming Board revenue figures. But often there is no set of limits or recognition of the limits until we get our credit-card bill, or somebody points it out.” Illinois sports betting market could rival Nevada’s, analysts say. Here is a list of the teams that made the playoffs in 2019 along with their preseason odds to qualify: Based on preseason NFL playoffs odds, the Bills were the most surprising team to make the playoffs in 2019. The Titans also had long odds to make the playoffs and needed some help down the stretch to eventually earn the second Wild Card spot in the AFC. The 49ers did not have very high expectations during the preseason, but were a trendy pick to snap their five-year postseason drought and obviously came through by winning the NFC West. The field for the NFL playoffs is set. Indianapolis took care of business in Week 17 with a victory over the Jaguars, but the Titans' last-second win over the Texans knocked Indianapolis down to the No. 7 seed. Buffalo is red hot against the spread and both of these teams have routinely seen their games go over the total throughout the season. (6) Rams at (3) Seahawks. Sat., Jan. 9, 4:40 p.m. ET, FOX (stream on fuboTV, try for free) Spread: Total: The Seahawks pulled out a too-close-for-comfort victory over the 49ers in Week 17, while the Rams prevailed over the division rival Cardinals in a battle of the backup quarterbacks. Jared Goff is going to try to suit up for L.A. next weekend, and it remains to be seen whether Cooper Kupp and/or Michael Brockers, both of whom were placed on the COVID-19 list this week, can get back on the field. This will be the third time these two teams play this season. The Rams took the first matchup 23-16, while the Seahawks won the rematch 20-9. (5) Buccaneers at (4) Washington. Sat., Jan. 9, 8:15 p.m. ET, NBC (stream on fuboTV, try for free) Spread: Total: Washington won the decrepit NFC East thanks to a laughable victory over the Eagles, while the Bucs wrapped up the No. 5 seed with a victory against the Falcons. The Football Team one of two home teams that is not favored on Wild Card Weekend, and for good reason. The under had hit in four of Tampa's last five games before Week 17, and in five of Washington's last six. (5) Ravens at (4) Titans. Sun., Jan. 10, 1:05 p.m. ET, ABC/ESPN (stream on fuboTV, try for free) Spread: Total: Thanks to their rollicking victory over the Texans, the Titans came away with the AFC South crown and the right to host a playoff game, and it's a good one. They get a rematch with the team they knocked out of the playoffs last season in what should be one of the best games of the first round. Baltimore's offense has really come on of late and the Ravens were 5-0 ATS in their last five before they blew out the Bengals in Week 17, with the total going Over in four of their last six. The Titans were 4-2 ATS in their last six before Week 17, with the total going Over in six of the last seven. (7) Bears at (2) Saints. Sun., Jan. 10, 4:40 p.m. ET, CBS/Nickelodeon/Amazon Prime (stream on CBS All Access) Spread: Total: The Bears backed their way into the playoffs despite a Week 17 loss to the Packers, while the Saints wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the conference by blowing out the Panthers. Chicago's offense has been better down the stretch of the season, which helped the over hit fairly often during that span. Saints games tended to go Over throughout this year as well, while New Orleans went 7-1-1 ATS down the stretch of the season. (6) Browns at (3) Steelers. Sun., Jan. 10, 8:15 p.m. ET, NBC (stream on fuboTV, try for free) Spread: Total: The Steelers didn't even really try to compete with the Browns in Week 17, starting Mason Rudolph and working Josh Dobbs in throughout the game as well. It'll be Ben Roethlisberger back under center next week, when these teams meet for the third time this season. It's worth noting that Pittsburgh won the early-season game between these two teams 38-7, and the Browns struggled to get by a Steelers team without a lot of key contributors in Week 17. He lost 2.08 strokes per round from tee-to-green last week. Tied for 12th last year with 1.28 SG: Putting per round. He lost 0.67 strokes per round off-the-tee and the tighter fairways this year could penalize him more. Hasn’t played this event since missing the cut in 2018. Has had success on similar shorter courses favoring accuracy over distance off the tee. Putted his way to victory at The CJ Cup but missed the cut in two of his final three events of 2020 before a T-35 finish in the 42-man field at the ToC. Has played here just once since 2015. Made the cut here each of the last three years with a top finish of 21st last January. He averaged 1.11 SG: Tee-to-Green but lost 0.52 strokes per round around the greens. The 2013 Sony Open champ has finished inside the top 50 just twice with three missed cuts in seven appearances since. Finished 13th in his only career appearance here in 2017. He has fallen to 220th in the Golfweek rankings, but he ended his 2020 schedule with an impressive T-8 finish at the DP World Tour Championship, Dubai. Tied for 17th last week with 1.67 SG: Putting per round and will look to keep the hot putter going while staying on Bermudagrass greens. Has played here each of the last three years but with a top finish of 29th. Tied for 41st in the 42-man field last week, largely due to his 2.44 strokes lost per round with the flat stick. He’s still sixth by the betting odds this week and will lean on his strong play from tee-to-green while needing a more average performance on the greens. Finished alone in fourth last week and was top-five in the field in both SG: Approach and SG: Tee-to-Green. Has played 48 rounds at Waialae with an average of 0.41 strokes gained per round. Second in last week’s field in both SG: Approach and SG: Tee-to-Green and lost to English in a playoff. Playing in Honolulu for the second time after a T-57 finish last year. Sports betting is big business around the world, and it's been dominated for decades by traditional land-based casinos. That's changing as betting moves online, and the mobile gambling market took a major step forward in 2020 as more states legalized online gambling, and thousands of people began betting legally at home during the pandemic. A few companies hit public markets as well, bringing even more attention and funding to the industry. As we look back on the year and forward to 2021, the sports betting market has three clear winners in my eyes: DraftKings (NASDAQ:DKNG) , MGM Resorts International (NYSE:MGM) , and the little known GAN Limited (NASDAQ:GAN) . The company hit the market through a special purpose acquisition company and hasn't looked back. Shares shot higher as the pandemic wore on and sports came back, helped by investors hoping that online betting would begin to replace in-person betting. For the year, shares are up 406%. In some ways, the boom in online betting is happening faster than expected, and that's helped early movers like DraftKings. In New Jersey, which is the bellwether for online gambling because it was the biggest early state to allow betting, there were $91.8 million in bets in November 2020 alone, up 86.9% from a year ago. If that growth and level of revenue are any indication of the potential for the rest of the country, DraftKings has a long runway ahead. The third-quarter 2020 results were a small indication of how well things are going for DraftKings. Revenue was up 42% on a pro forma basis to $133 million, and monthly unique users grew 64% to 1 million. Revenue is also expected to be $750 million to $850 million in 2021, up 45% at its midpoint from 2020 guidance. This is a sports betting stock with a lot going for it and maybe just at the beginning of its growth story. MGM Resorts. As gambling moves online, companies with a physical presence can sometimes have an advantage over digital-only companies. They have known brands, regulators sometimes require a physical presence to operate in a state, and there can be synergies between real-world and online casinos. That's the space that MGM Resorts is trying to fill, and it's done so relatively well in 2020. Valiev has the kickboxing skill to keep up on the feet and is by far the better wrestler, making him a safe investment. Molly McCann’s defensive wrestling has failed her in both of her Octagon losses, and she’s largely had to rely on her offensive wrestling against low-level Flyweights in her wins. Not only is Procopio significantly superior on the mat, but she’s a skilled enough striker to hold her own a weight class up against Karol Rosa. She’s fefinitely a solid underdog investment. Seung Woo Choi has fought two quality UFC opponents (Movsar Evloev and Gavin Tucker) and one very, very bad one (Suman Mokhtarian), The quality duo combined to land 10 takedowns on him, and considering Zalal’s willingness and ability to drag opponents to the mat, that’s a death sentence. Choi doesn’t even figure to have much of an edge on the feet, as Zalal’s length, durability, and savvy make landing a knockout shot a borderline impossible task. “The Moroccan Devil” should be a much larger favorite, so make sure you’re in position to punish the bookies for their error. UFC Vegas 18 Odds For The Main Card: Edgar Believes Finish Over Sandhagen Earns Him UFC Title Shot. Reem Will ‘Retire Immediately’ After Winning Title. Thoughts: Alistair Overeem, Alexandre Pantoja and Cody Stamann are your investments of choice. I’m genuinely not clear on why Alexander Volkov is the favorite against Overeem. That’s because “Drago’s” best wins came over Fabricio Werdum and Walt Harris, both of whom Overeem also defeated, and looks to struggle against the Dutchman’s mobile striking offense. On top of that, Volkov has yet to fully address the grappling issues that have plagued him throughout his UFC career, presenting another tempting target for the well-rounded Overeem. In short, the veteran is a definitely worth your time. Manel Kape has looked like a monster in his last few Rizin bouts, but those came against opponents willing to oblige him in the stand up. The last time he faced a capable grappling specialist, “Ulka” Sasaki dominated him on the mat. Pantoja is tough as nails and a hugely dangerous submission artist, giving him the tools necessary to spoil Kape’s Octagon debut. Stamann, meanwhile, was -310 against Andre Ewell, which if anything undersold the stylistic nightmare he posed to “Mr. Highlight.” He’s still a bargain at -380 against Octagon newcomer Askar Askar, not to be confused with Flyweight contender Askar Askarov. Askar is an okay wrestler with painfully bad striking defense that Stamann should have little issue exploiting, making “The Spartan” a reliable anchor. Dawn of legal sports gambling in Virginia produces rush to gain new clients with promotions - just in time for Super Bowl. Johnny Avello couldn’t have imagined sports wagering grabbing hold across the country the way it has in recent years. With 35 years in the horse racing and wagering industry, he’s made a living in Las Vegas setting odds on sporting events. Only a handful of years ago, his odds on Virginia soon becoming a sports gambling playground wouldn’t have been great, and he would’ve been wrong. Just in time for the Super Bowl, Virginia went online Jan. 21 for legal sports gambling through mobile apps, becoming the 20th state to permit sports wagering since the Supreme Court started opening the business to states other than Nevada in May 2018. “I didn’t think it would ever happen going back five years ago, to be honest with you,” said Avello, the Director of the Race and Sportsbook for DraftKings, one of the first five mobile apps to gain a license in Virginia, along with FanDuel, BetMGM, BetRivers and William Hill. “Now that I see it evolving, it’s just like it’s full-steam ahead.” Competition to gain a foothold in a new marketplace like Virginia, which could generate nearly $90 million in annual revenues from sports gambling, has been fierce. With the advantageous timing of licenses being handed out and permissions being granted for sports wagering outfits to flip the power switch on for their mobile app operations in late January, promotions centered around the Super Bowl have been a go-to marketing piece. Naturally, some of the promotions are more attractive — and less inclined to “gotcha” trickery — than others. FanDuel, in addition to offering a one-time “risk-free” bet of up $1,000 misfire on your first bet and FanDuel will deposit up to $1,000 into your account within three days — is also giving 55-to-1 odds on a first-wager only up to $5 on the outright winner in the Super Bowl.
